We had the pleasure of interviewing Brad Barr over Zoom video! Brad Barr - the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter of The Barr Brothers and The Slip - recetly released The Winter Mission, Barr's brand new instrumental solo guitar album through Secret City Records. For more than 20 years, Brad Barr has been counting the number 216. It's a mysterious number that seems to show up everywhere—from clocks and license plates to Ouija boards and receipts—and now it's also sewn the fabric of his new album, like the 216 stitches on a baseball. Inspired by artists like Caetano Veloso, Mississippi Fred McDowell, D'Gary, and John Frusciante, Barr set out to make music that was naked and unprocessed, but also occasionally loud—alive with a sense of wakeful intimacy. The number 216 was a constant theme. The guitarist first encountered the so-called "magic square" during a teenage acid trip; in the years since then it's become a talisman—one of the few areas where Barr feels mystical, sensing a genuine order in the universe. These songs pay tribute to that order—from 216's lofty mathematical and astrological properties to its function as an area-code (for Cleveland). Barr spent decades developing his visceral approach to the guitar, first with The Slip and then across three records with The Barr Brothers. The Winter Mission—the follow-up to The Fall Apartment, Barr's 2008 solo debut—had its origins in a commission from Michael Wolk, Artistic Director at New York City's All For One Theater. It "felt like a gift," Barr recalls—to have a sound he could explore all by himself, away from the road, during COVID's strange intermission. Brad Barr is the lead singer and songwriter of The Barr Brothers, a folk-Americana band that's been around for over a decade. They have toured with The War on Drugs, Calexico, Shakey Graves, and Patrick Watson. Their TV performances include The Late Show with David Letterman and CBS This Morning Saturday. Errol Barnett is CBS News' transportation correspondent based in New York and Washington, D.C., reporting for all CBS News broadcasts and platforms including "CBS Mornings," the "CBS Evening News with Norah O'Donnell," and CBSN, CBS News' 24/7 digital streaming news service. Barnett has also served as a fill-in anchor on the "CBS Weekend News," "CBS This Morning: Saturday" and on CBSN. At CBS News, Barnett's intrepid reporting has covered a wide variety of national and international events. In the thick of the 2020 presidential campaign, his interview with then-candidate Joe Biden was widely cited for the news it uncovered and at the end of 2020 he was the first to report extra doses of the Pfizer COVID vaccine were being discovered in vials by hospital staff across the country. Barnett was the only network journalist to fly through Hurricane Dorian when it stalled over the Bahamas as the most powerful storm to ever hit the country and reported extensively from Grand Bahama island documenting its aftermath. He has secured several exclusive interviews, including with the creator of the controversial facial recognition app Clearview AI, with the mother of a 9-year-old Illinois boy charged with murdering five relatives and with an Arizona woman attacked by a jaguar at a Phoenix Zoo. Barnett joined CBS News in 2016 as a Washington-based correspondent, covering the White House beat on weekends. He was with President Barack Obama during his final overseas trip in office and questioned President Donald Trump several times at the White House and aboard Air Force One about threats against journalists and other major issues. Before joining CBS News, Barnett spent almost a decade at CNN with his most recent role as anchor of weekday editions of "CNN Newsroom" airing on CNN and CNN International. Prior to anchoring from CNN's Atlanta headquarters, the network deployed Barnett as a general assignment correspondent to Johannesburg, South Africa and to Abu Dhabi, U.A.E as a midday anchor. While anchoring from the Middle East, Barnett was part of CNN's 2011 Peabody Award winning coverage of the "Arab Spring." He also hosted CNNI's weekly series "Inside Africa" for which he reported from 22 countries on the continent in 24 months including Madagascar, Senegal and Tunisia. His work earned the program a Salute to Excellence award from the National Association of Black Journalists. His journalism career began in 2001 at Channel One News, where, at age 18, he was the Los Angeles-based network's youngest anchor and reporter. Barnett covered the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, then-Senator Barack Obama's first national speech, and the New England heroin epidemic. Barnett earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with a focus on international relations from the University of California, Los Angeles. A native of England, Barnett is a member of the Investigative Reporters and Editors, SAG/AFTRA, the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Association of Black Journalists. In this episode, CBS This Morning Saturday host Dana Jacobson joins Lisa for a candid conversation about challenging world of being a female anchor in the sports and entertainment world, and how the loss of her father drove her passions into high gear towards achieving her true happiness.
In a completely (not) shocking development, CBS This Morning Saturday runs a scathing hit piece package on Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) criticizing his decision to allegedly provide COVID-19 vaccines for big campaign donors and supporters in two Florida zip codes. Also, Dr. Anthony Fauci gives vague, wandering answers to CNN's Dana Bash about when and if Americans should return to 'normal' as we knew it before the Coronavirus pandemic.

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Kat Edmonson over Zoom video! Edmonson’s new album Dreamers Do is out now via Spinnerette Records.Dreamers Do reached the #1 spot on Billboard’s Traditional Jazz chart, and the album debuted #1 at iTunes Jazz, #2 Most Added at Jazzweek and was named Deezer’s Album of the Week upon release. The album combines mid-20th century Disney songs (from Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Pinocchio, Bedknobs on Broomsticks, Mary Poppins, Babes in Toyland), with familiar classics (“What A Wonderful World” as well as “All I Do is Dream of You” from Singin in the Rain), and features two new original songs from Edmonson (“Too Late to Dream” and “Someone’s In The House.”)“Dreamers Do takes place in a single night, from bedtime till morning. It's about our concepts around dreaming- all of the wonderful things and the fearful things, the things that keep us awake in the middle of the night,” Edmonson explains of the new album, “It's also about the quiet power of merely having a dream. There are interludes between the songs indicating different points in this nocturnal journey and if someone wants to listen to the entire record as an experience, it's available to them.”The LP follows the release of 2018’s Old Fashioned Gal, which Billboard calls “an intimate journey from doubt to resolve and implied triumph.” NPR Music raves the album is “a handsome showcase for her songwriting, which has grown ever more confident over the last decade,” while the Associated Press says the record “sounds like an alternate soundtrack to an Audrey Hepburn film.”In 2014 Edmonson released The Big Picture, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers, #1 on Contemporary Jazz Chart, and #2 on Total Jazz Chart. Her 2015 performance on “CBS This Morning: Saturday” garnered the program’s highest rated viewership since 2006. Her 2012 LP Way Down Low was described by The New York Times as “fresh as a spring bouquet,” and her performances at WNYC’s Soundcheck and Daytrotter were included in “Best Live Performances” and “Best Sessions of 2012,” respectively. The Texas native began crafting her signature sound while performing in Austin’s local club circuit for years before releasing her debut LP Take To The Sky in 2009. Focused around the alchemic collaboration and camaraderie between members Jeff Gorman (lead vocals, guitar, synth pedals he plays with his feet) and Jake Cochran (vocal harmonies, stand-up drum kit) and recorded with producers Vance Powell (Jack White, Kings Of Leon, Chris Stapleton) and Adrian Olsen (Foxygen, Natalie Prass), the album is part soaring indie rock, part swirling psychedelia, part atmospheric folk and — alongside critically acclaimed performances their summer at Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, and Lollapalooza — signaled their triumphant arrival as an emergent musical force. At the top of 2020, the duo was named to NPR’s “Slingshot Artists to Watch,” with the outlet highlighting the duo’s “energetic live shows,” during which the two play “a full band’s worth of instruments.” NPR also highlighted the group in their “Best Songs of 2019 (So Far),” declaring their single “Carolina Lorelai” to be “an explosive mission statement from a band that’s here to stay.”Alongside critical acclaim from Billboard (“a reverent and downright hypnotic experience”), Uproxx (“a refined vein of My Morning Jacket / Band of Horses-style Americana”), and Relix (5 Artists You Should Know), the album was also met with success at radio – with multiple tracks off Illiterate Light cracking the Top 10 of the Adult Alternative (AAA) charts. The duo kicked off a North American headline tour at the end of January – playing to sold out rooms in Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston, and an enraptured crowd at Brooklyn’s Rough Trade. This followed heavy touring in 2019 with Rainbow Kitten Surprise and The Head And The Heart. High-energy audio and video from these headline shows were released throughout 2020 as part of the duo’s “In The Moment” live series. While the series began pre-lockdown, it took on significant meaning in recent months, becoming a tribute to the power of the live performances and the community formed during the duo’s shows, leading SPIN to declare: “The promising Virginia-based duo has an ambition that is promising at a time when rock needs it.”ABOUT DEVON GILFILLIAN:Devon Gilfillian’s debut album, Black Hole Rainbow, was released by Capitol Records earlier this year. It includes his top 5 AAA radio hit, “The Good Life,” a rallying cry for inclusion. Streams of “The Good Life” skyrocketed after Gilfillian performed the song on “CBS This Morning Saturday.” The collage-style lyric video for the song incorporates images that Gilfillian captured in Nashville over the summer, during the BLM protests.American Songwriter hailed “The Good Life” as “[a] soul-soothing ode to finding peace and beauty in life.” The Tennessean hailed Black Hole Rainbow as “one of the best albums released this year, period.” The album also won a spot on Iowa Public Radio’s list of “The Best New Albums (So Far) Of 2020.” The New York Times said, “Devon Gilfillian, a soul songwriter based in Nashville, made his formidable debut album, ‘Black Hole Rainbow,’ with Shawn Everett…warping vintage sounds toward something deep and strange.”Gilfillian performed the national anthem at NASCAR 2020 on the day they banned the Confederate flag. He also recently launched The Good Life Fund, which supports organizations that are doing good in the world, including Give A Note Foundation and Rebuilding Together Nashville. Gilfillian has played numerous festivals, including Newport Folk and Montreal Jazz. Today is the first episode of a new mini series I will be doing where we will be featuring some of our artists during this time of quarantine. My first guest is Kat Edmonson and we actually had Kat on the show almost exactly 2 years ago so if you like what you hear today then please check out that interview which is episode 34 (http://www.speakingofthearts.com/episode34/). Today, I speak with Kat to learn about some of the unique things she is doing from home to stay creative and active as an artist. For example, Kat has created a new live show that she streams from her apartment in NYC every Sunday night at 7PM Eastern. You can tune into Facebook to catch that and you can also check out her new website http://www.kat.live where she is archiving each episode as well as other new content. Our conversation is wide ranging and covers a lot of topics and emotions that I would imagine many artists are going through right now so I hope everyone finds this helpful. On a side note, I wanted to update everyone who listened to our last episode with Brice Rosenbloom where we highlighted the Jazz Coalition Commission Fund (https://www.jazzcoalition.org/). As I record this, the fund has raised over $25,000 so thank you to everyone who is supporting it. More on Kat: Dreamers Do, Kat Edmonson’s 2020 record, explores the common human struggles around daring to dream, including a range of emotional and psychological consequences. The album begins with a promising invitation to settle in for the night and dream. Joy and magic are revealed before an eventual left turn is taken, and a wild night ensues. A question gets raised in Kat’s vulnerable original, “Too Late to Dream”: “Are the messages we receive as children about following our dreams relevant through adult life?” Self-despair is explored, however all doubts are ultimately laid to rest in a stunning duet with guitarist Bill Frisell on the song “Age Of Not Believing.” Dreamers Do follows the release of 2018’s Old Fashioned Gal, which Billboard calls “an intimate journey from doubt to resolve and implied triumph.” In 2014 Edmonson released The Big Picture, which debuted at 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers, 1 on Contemporary Jazz Chart, and 2 on Total Jazz Chart. She went on to tour worldwide with high profile acts including Lyle Lovett, Chris Isaak, Gary Clark Jr., Shawn Colvin, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson, Nick Lowe and more.

If you’ve ever tuned into CBS This Morning: Saturday and seen a chef or cookbook author get to talk with the anchors about their career and their food on the segment known as "The Dish," producer Marci Waldman was behind what you saw on your television screen. Born and raised in New York City, Marci started working at CBS News when she was 13 years old. Her father, who very sadly passed away after this interview was recorded, worked at CBS News for almost 50 years. Marci pretty much grew up in the building. It’s the only place she’s ever worked. Hello everyone and welcome to Speaking of the Arts. We’ve taken some time off but we are eager to start rolling out new episodes for you. As such, I couldn’t be happier to have the opportunity to speak with today’s guest. Full disclosure…today’s guest happens to also be one of our esteemed artists with whom we have the privilege of booking: the one and only Kat Edmonson! Here’s why you need to know about Kat. In a relatively short amount of time, Kat’s career has seen her recording and/or performing and sharing the stage with the likes of Lyle Lovett, Chris Isaak, Smokey Robinson, George Benson, and Willie Nelson just to name a few. Kat’s 2015 performance on “CBS This Morning: Saturday” garnered the program’s highest rated viewership since 2006. As a leader, Kat has released three critically acclaimed recordings including Way Down Low and The Big Picture. The Boston Globe described Way Down Low as “one of the greatest vocal albums I’ve ever heard.” The Big Picture debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. On April 27 of this year (2018), Kat will release her 4th album as a leader titled Old Fashioned Gal. Links: Kat Edmonson website and tour dates Kat on Facebook Kat on Instagram
