From an early age just wouldn't take no for an answer and her infectious enthusiasm is inspiring.” Jim: “I was listening to the podcast the other day while hiking up a mountain. You were talking about where to get second-hand skis. At the beginning of the season, a lot of resorts organise Braderies where the local shops pool ex-hire or last season kit to sell in one convenient place. Another great option is shops like Trocsport which sell secondhand skis on behalf of individuals. There are loads of small shops like this.” There are now 226 episodes of The Ski Podcast to catch up with and 121 of those were listened to in the last week. In this captivating episode of the Beehive Podcast, Nataliya engages in great conversation with the most successful female alpine skier in British history - Chemmy Alcott. Together, they delve into Chemmy's extraordinary journey and uncover the key elements of her triumphs. Chemmy passionately emphasises the significance of unwavering dedication and the importance of giving 100% effort, even when confronted with setbacks and facing failures. Despite enduring life-altering accidents resulting in over 40 broken bones, Chemmy's commitment to her sport remained unwavering and she shares how after having to retire, she achieved her dream of presenting Ski Sunday on BBC Sport. Nataliya and Chemmy also talk about society's tendency to celebrate winners, shedding light on the often-overlooked value of relentless effort and unwavering determination. This episode promises insights that resonate far beyond the world of sports. KEY TAKEAWAYS Chasing excellence, not perfection, is the key to personal growth and success. Overcoming setbacks and failures is essential for discovering one's true potential. Effort and resilience should be celebrated over winning, especially in the context of young girls in sport. Positive self-talk and a growth mindset are crucial for overcoming challenges and achieving goals. The bond between athletes and nature is strong, but it is important to protect and preserve the environment for future generations. BEST MOMENTS "I'm proud of every single one of [my injuries] because they only came because I was pushing my limit." "Chasing excellence is a really good way to live because it's just continuous. Whatever happens, you want to be more excellent the next day." "I think positivity is when you say 'yes' to whatever challenge you are facing. If you look at it positively, your brain actually performs 30% more productively." "I define myself by being a ski racer because I've got this kind of crazy name, Chemmy. That was who I was for 20 years of my life." "I'm worried about the legacy of the sport if we don't protect our mountains. Our glaciers are melting, our mountains are dying, and we need to try and make a change." Today Ben is joined by skier, four-time Winter Olympian for Great Britain, presenter of Ski Sunday and much more besides: Chemmy Alcott. With a career high ranking of 8th in the World, 7 times as British National Overall Champion and the only British female skier to ever win a run in a World Cup, Chemmy is widely regarded as one of Britain's greatest ever skiers.East Sussex, where she was born, isn't perhaps your typical start for a pro skiier but Chemmy began the sport from an early age and her talent was clear as a junior. At the age of 12 she became a member of the British Junior Alpine team and she spent every British summer between the ages of 11 and 19 out in New Zealand to train during their winter. As well as skiing Chemmy was a talented tennis player, but it was the winter sport that she chose to specialise in. She went on in her senior career to win numerous titles. Threaded throughout this journey of sporting prowess however has been a tale of injury and overcoming this adversity. She has broken 49 different bones, including her neck at the age of just 11 and her leg following a severe crash whilst training in Canada in 2010. That accident required over 1000 minutes of surgery. Again and again Chemmy picked herself up and battled through the adversity to reach success once again. Since retiring from competing on the world stage after The Sochi Olympics in 2014, she has immersed herself in the world of broadcasting and the media. Among other things she now presents for the BBC on Ski Sunday and commentates on the World Cup Ski Series for Eurosport. Furthermore, she competed in ITV's Dancing on Ice in 2012, finishing 5th. She continues to push herself to tackle and achieve many new physical challenges and has completed the 100 mile road race in London for example and has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. Her passion for encouraging girls confidence is immense and her ‘X-elle' scheme aims to develop girls confidence through sport. You can follow Rural Business Focus and contact Ben on Twitter @ruralbf_pod or on Instagram @ruralbusinessfocusHave you thought about the benefits of podcasting for your business? An inspirational mum of two, wife and BBC Ski Sunday Presenter…and, wait for it, 4x Olympian skier used to hurtling herself down mountains at 92mph. Regarded as Britain's greatest ever female skier, Chemmy Alcott put her stake in the ground by becoming the first British Alpine Ski racer to win a world cup run.   I wouldn't know where to begin with her accomplishments…her incredible skiing achievements are just the tip of the iceberg! Raising well over £800,000 for charity, she's done the World's Toughest Ski Race in Greenland, the 100-mile road race in London and climbed Mt Kilimanjaro.   24 hours of paddling down the Amazon River, anyone? My guest today certainly knows how to push beyond her limits. After being offered her dream job as she was ready to birth her first child, she had what to most would be an IMPOSSIBLE decision to make.   Having broken 49 bones in her life, she meets adversity head on and rises to the challenge, no matter what life throws her way. Aside from her BBC presenting, Chemmy is an inspirational speaker, runs her own business with her husband, 25-time British Champion Dougie Crawford, also a ski coach.   Her two boys, Locki 5 and Cooper 3, are central to her life, but we'll explore why maintaining identity is so incredibly important to her.    I'm really excited and honoured to talk with her today…

Chemmy Alcott is Britain's most successful female skier, having competed at 4 winter Olympics and won a World Cup event. She also presents the BBC's Ski Sunday programme and is part of the team for the BBC's winter Olympics coverage. As a skier, Chemmy might seem a strange guest for a triathlon-based podcast. However Chemmy oozes passion and energy and has so many lessons to share from sport. So if you need a confidence boost for a race coming up, or if you're feeling a bit 'meh' because you're injured, or if you're just finding the news too depressing, then listen to this, you won't regret it. You'll hear: 08:00 Chemmy's work with BBC Sport during the Olympics 'it's such an honour and it's like working on ski sunday on steroids.' What it's like working with BBC Sport presenter Clare Balding. 'She really is an empowering mentor to have and she has an incredible knowledge and she never steps on the toes of others, she makes everyone else be at their best.' 13:00 We talk about why it was okay talking about failing and losing. When you fail you have a massive opportunity to learn from that. I'm mentally stronger because I am honest about why I failed. 15:30 Pressure, expectation, underperforming and the danger of holding back. Can you be confident enough to risk it all? 18:00 Confidence on and off the skis. I used to struggle a lot and when I was coming back from injury, I pretended I was Lindsey Vonn. Pretending to be someone else is a really easy technique to get you out of that fear bubble and then you can be yourself. 27:40 Chemmy talks about how she manages to mix work and family. 'I need to work but when I come back to them, I'm able to be very present. But it is a revolution.' 29:00 Some of the messages Chemmy tries to get across to the athletes she coaches. It's confidence! And we do a simple activity every night to help with that. I want to use sport for lifeskill gains. 31:00 Chemmy's thoughts for those who have a lack of confidence, whether ahead of a race or because of fear. "You have to be honest and then you have to take those negative feelings, use those feelings and turn them into a strong power." You have a choice, it's within you. Do you let it stop you or do you use it to inspire you to be better' 37:00 Is Chemmy always 'on it?' I think it must annoying for those around me. 'The vivaciousness and gung-ho I have goes back to when my mum died and it was a complete shock and now I think you don't know when it's all over' 43:00 We talk about life without ski and climate change. 46:00 Some brilliant advice when it comes to injuries. "It is challenging and people react in different ways. You have to realistic and present every day. You can't let that bitterness not drive you. You can use it in a positive way. 49:00 Channelling nerves and fears when you're about to start a race. "This changed throughout my career a the beginning I always used to try too hard but that was a massive block because I would over-try. Then I tried to be loose and I would say to myself 'loose as a goose and I used to try and take my brain out and put it into my feet so it could feel the run.' 'I looked quite unprofessional in the start gates because I used to be juggling, to switch my brain off. But I needed to not care and trust myself. 52:00 We talk about why Chemmy is so passionate about championing other females. "My mum always used to tell me to go into a room and fine a woman who inspires you and go and talk to them. Have the confidence to go and talk to them, have a bit of them and make yourself better." Ski holidays weren't on the cards for Brits last winter, with travel restrictions in force due to the pandemic – as well as the UK's own lockdown rules, which at the time included a ban on international travel. However, with ongoing vaccine rollouts and easing restrictions, snow-starved skiers will be hitting the slopes this season as ski resorts across Europe are once again opening to holidaymakers - meaning 2021/22 should be a ski season to remember. The 6.3 million Brits who regularly hit the slopes are now free to do so, with Austria confirming it be open to overseas visitors, as well as Germany, France, and Switzerland. But with two thirds of UK skiers aged 45-65, resorts have brought in new measures to ensure guests remain safe while enjoying their winter breaks. Resorts are set to introduce precautionary measures seen elsewhere this year, including mandatory MNP (Mouth Nose Protection), regular sanitisation of cable cars and ski lifts, and daily testing of employees for Covid-19. This week on Monday Mile, I  head to West London, Hampton Court to meet Chemmy Alcott who is a 4x Winter Olympian downhill skier, and the first ever British woman to win a World Cup run. Chemmy's been to 8 World Champs, she's a business owner,  wife and Mum of two young boys, and your current BBC Ski Sunday host.  She's also a really good friend of mine! What I loved about this Monday Mile stroll, is Chemmy's all or nothing approach to life, whether it be the dance floor, looking after her boys or charging the mountain. Her honesty and vulnerability in being open about struggling to balance both her family and working life, is inspiring "I am a swan, and I have my head above water ..... just, but legs are frantic!" This really does make the superwoman that Chemmy is, somewhat relatable. She's got endless energy, and well and truly is the definition of a kind-hearted, supportive soul. Former Team GB double winter Olympian Aimee Fuller is on a mission to find the secrets for Monday motivation from some of the most successful sports men and women of our time and other well-known celebrities which will drop every week.  Aimee will be probing for answers from the full spectrum of routines; the early birds who have finely tuned Monday mornings, to the late risers who struggle to get up before 11am. How do elite athletes find the motivation to kick start their week come rain or shine? How do celebrities deliver no matter what the time of day? What knowledge can they pass on?'  Each episode will drop on a Monday morning and plays out in real time. Aimee will meet each of her guests for a walk and a chat and over the course of the mile she will find out how they cope on a Monday morning - their idiosyncrasies, breakfast routines, alarm noises - and how, when they need to, find the motivation to kick-on through the week.  Dropping every Monday as a bitesize 20/25 minute piece of content and weekly dose of motivation - right when you need it - sharing some of Britain's greatest athletes' secrets on self-motivation, candid thoughts on what they struggle with and a sideways look at some of their more unusual morning habits. 'Today you have the choice. You can choose to be scared, or you can choose to ski fast'. Wise words spoken by Chemmy Alcott's coach just minutes before she skied the most profound race of her life. The moment she decided to let go of her fear of failure. This weeks guest is the infamous Chemmy Alcott - multi-alpine ski champion, mum of 2, successful broadcaster and presenter, a coach and an inspirational speaker... (a formidable list!) Chemmy began her twenties decade faced with a lot of physical and mental adversity. Training hard for multiple events she competed rigorously; however soon after the 2006 Olympics, Chemmy's Mum sadly passed away, leaving her to navigate the rest of her twenties without her primary source of guidance and support. The following years were tough, but gave Chemmy a new outlook on life which not only prepared her for the intense career she was about to embark on, but also how to make the most out of every single day.We discuss Chemmy's journey through grief, her travelling adventures, the highs and lows of competitive sport, falling in and out of love and how overcoming her fear of failure and finally embracing imperfection lead her to discover just how much control she had over her success. I’ve talked about a slow down coming for the last few weeks, and we saw the numbers trend in that direction a couple of weeks ago, with numbers reversing in my last weekly update. This week we saw sales slow back down, although the conditional deals, as well as multiple offers, were still quite high. And the number of new listings were lower but strong considering families are putting their focus back to school as it's only a few days away. Sales are back down again this week; even lower (by one sale) than when the numbers fell off the cliff a few weeks ago. The sales that are still happening are happening in a competitive environment, with lots of multiple offers. Looking thru the sales, there are a lot of them happening at the entry-level market price points, and the ones that are happening in the 600’s + (there were a decent number of them); are homes that are truly impressive. Conditional sales were high again this week, surprisingly high to what I was expecting. These are typically a snapshot to show how active the market is at a given time; and with 27 active deals in the last week, it is more active than I thought it would be. Looking at the listings that have offers on them; only 2 were homes that were listed in the last 7 days, with the majority being a few weeks old. New listings hit a low we haven’t seen in a few months; although still larger than the # of firm sales. There is a noticeable slow down in showings and activity in general on a few of the listings that came out last week. There are a few explanations we may point to for the lower listings; families enjoying the last few weeks before school or a lot of people who were interested in selling may have got their house on the market earlier in the summer. Ultimately, for the market to continue to balance, we will need more listings to come out. My guess is the next pop in listings we will see will be after kids are back to school in September. I was surprised to see how many ‘luxury’ homes (premium-priced) sold this week. This can be different prices in different areas. Luxury in Chemmy may be at 600k, while luxury in Southend may be 800K. There were a number of bigger sales this week, and I was close with some of my buyers to getting involved with multiple offers on some of them. In the case of the ones that we came across, they offered something very unique that the market hadn’t seen in a long time; a really nice in-law suite for putting the parents downstairs and having built-in babysitters, or a beautiful pool backyard (the place on Jeanine I heard had 150k+ put into the landscaping). In all these cases, buyers were more than willing to pay for the WOW factor. Almost 80% of sales this week that happened were under 400k. Now that is still a lot of money for Sudbury homes, so its understandable that more than the average is happening at that price point. With interest rates in the gutter (and the way the Canadian economy is looking, it's not going to get better any time soon. My guess is 2 years out before we see interest rates creep up); 350k is a price range that a lot of first-time buyers are looking in. First-time buyers are a huge positive indication of a healthy real estate marketplace, so maybe we can take this as an overall positive, but it is interesting to note. With the nights cooling off and August running out of days, it truly does feel like the Summer of 2020 is coming to an end. However you have been enjoying your summer, I hope you continue to squeeze the last few ounces of joy out of it! Until next week!

Corine Remande is now blind in her right eye after being hit by a wayward golf ball struck by America’s Brooks Koepka during last weekend’s Ryder Cup. Remande says she could have died on the golf course and says she is taking legal action to improve safety for spectators. But how does Brooks Koepka feel? One golfer who knows is James Gordon – a Scotsman who, over 10 years ago, hit a wayward ball that caused another man to lose his eye. James tells Sportshour how the accident stopped him from playing golf for over half a year and how he couldn’t bring himself to speak to the man he had injured because he didn’t know what to say. James also believes golfers should take out insurance to protect them on the golf course. Nearly 10 years ago, American runner Denise Sauriol was hit by a car on her way to start a half marathon. Her body smashed into the windscreen, causing her to break five vertebrae in her back. Denise says the accident changed her life, leading to the birth of ‘Denise 2.0, and she’s set to run her 100th 26.2 mile race as she competes in the Chicago Marathon. Arsene Wenger is one of the most respected football managers in the world, having led Arsenal football club for a staggering 22 years. He’s famous for winning three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups, his ridiculously long coats and his frustratingly long struggles with zips. But what was perhaps most iconic about the Frenchman was his extraordinary quotes that left journalists with more questions than answers. And now the legacy of those words lives on in the form of Japanese Haiku poems, as written by author Gunnar Sorrars – who tells us some of his most bizarre Wenger Haikus. Rugby league side Toronto Wolfpack play London Broncos with promotion up for grabs for the winner on Sunday. We hear from Toronto super fan Steve Marsden, who makes 500-mile round trips to watch his beloved team every week – and even flew to the United Kingdom to see Toronto play Salford Devils in Manchester. Britain’s greatest ever female skier Chemmy Alcott reveals why she is going to store her baby’s stem cells after she has given birth to her second child. Chemmy discusses the benefits of storing stem cells in case of future injuries or illnesses and offers advice on how to athletes can stay fit and healthy during pregnancy. US Paralympic alpine skier Danelle Umstead ‘lived her impossible’ this year by becoming the first blind contestant on America’s Dancing with the Stars show. Danelle tells Sportshour how she once told the TV she would make history by appearing on the series and reveals why dancing was a lot harder and more nerve-wracking than competing in the Winter Paralympics. Former Australia rugby international Rob Horne was paralysed in his right arm following a heavy tackle whilst playing for Northampton Saints in April this year. Ahead of a special tribute match between Northampton and Leicester Tigers at Twickenham, from which the proceeds will go to Rob and his family, he describes the moment he realised the extent of his injury, what it was like to be forced into retirement so early and how he’s determined to move on with his life. And in this week’s Sporting Witness, we're taking you back to 1978 and a new type of athletics event which would go on to become internationally successful.
