Join us in this thought-provoking exploration of life's purpose as we draw inspiration from Parshas Mikeitz and the significance of the word "Vayehi" in the Torah. Listen as we discuss Pharaoh's dreams and their role as a wake-up call, prompting us to consider the inevitable end of life and the ultimate judgment before the heavenly tribunal. We emphasize the importance of self-reflection on our life's accomplishments and how we might respond to the Almighty about our deeds. Through a touching personal story of a friend's conversion process and a compelling parable on measuring one's life by Torah study and selfless dedication, we encourage listeners to ponder the meaningfulness of their existence and the actions they take in fulfilling their life's purpose. We also explore the concept of living by the word of Hashem, recognizing Him as the ultimate provider of sustenance. Acknowledging that our skills and labor are not the true sources of our support, we reflect on the divine hand guiding every aspect of our lives. As we navigate the journey of our temporary existence, the discussion highlights the importance of embracing our mission to accomplish, act, and strive for a closer relationship with God. This episode invites you to embrace the understanding that our success and livelihood are decreed by God, urging us to focus on nurturing a deep connection with the divine throughout our lifetime._____________This episode (Ep 7.10) of the Parsha Review Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe on Parshas Mikeitz is dedicated in Honor of Yossi & Ashlene Azoulay & in honor of our Holy Soldiers in the Battlefield and our Torah Scholars in the Study Halls who are fighting for the safety of our nation!Download & Print the Parsha Review Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ncaRyoH5iJmGGoMZs9y82Hz2ofViVouv?usp=sharingRecorded at TORCH Meyerland in the Levin Family Studios to a live audience on December 29, 2024, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on December 30, 2024_____________DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Characterized by a broad range of neurologic and psychological symptoms, including cognitive impairment, disorientation, sleep disturbances, and mood or personality changes, as liver disease progresses, the symptoms of HE tend to worsen and can lead to coma and death if left untreated. This curriculum aims to improve the referral process from the initial onset of HE to consultation with a hepatologist by increasing knowledge of available tools for the identification, diagnosis, and treatment of HE. Ultimately, this educational program is intended to help narrow the gap in care for the underserved HE population. Video education created for patients is available for this topic. Joined by our new associate Darren Hilton, and together with Ben, in this episode we'll be exploring the 4 universal promises of leadership set out by Bob Anderson and Bill Adams. You'll hear us discuss how leaders – and organisations – succeed or fail depending on whether or not leaders clarify their roles and goals, understand the impact implicit expectations have on their perceived effectiveness, and keep their promises.
How did a husband-and-wife vacation end up saving a city from the atomic bomb while destroying another? And how did a century-old murder of one family bring another into existence? Easily, explains political scientist Brian Klaas of University College London, who points out that history is replete with chance events that profoundly shaped both society and individual lives. Listen as Klaas discusses his book Fluke with EconTalk's Russ Roberts. Klaas argues that recognizing the randomness of everyday life and history can lead to a newfound appreciation for the meaning of every decision, and to a focus on joyful experimentation instead of relentless optimization.

How to Save the World | A Podcast About the Psychology of Environmental Action
In today's episode, we chat with behavioral and environmental psychologist, Dr Reuven Sussman, head of the Behavior and Health Program at The American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE). He conducts research about, and advocates for, energy efficiency in buildings and transportation - a sector that makes up the lion's share of carbon emissions. Dr Sussman is an adjunct professor at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, and currently sits on the editorial board of The Journal of Environmental Psychology and The Journal of Social Psychology. We dive into his recent paper he authored titled “Context and Meaningfulness in Energy Efficiency Labeling for Real Estate Listings” which explores the real nitty gritty of how to get home energy labels to work and exactly how to design them. We discuss the psychological foundations of how people respond to these labels, the kind of policy that is required to get them going, and how they can best be used to influence the real estate market to decarbonize buildings and drive greener choices. We also talk about another important concept called “framing” which is a technique that can be used to help sell the often tricker and more demanding energy efficiency upgrades to homeowners. * * * How to Save the World is a podcast about the psychology of what gets people to do eco-behaviors and take climate action: Environmental engineer, designer, and author, Katie Patrick, hunts down the latest behavioral science literature from top universities such as Harvard, MIT, and Stanford to unearth the evidence-based teachings you can use to rapidly get more people to adopt your environmental campaign, program, or product. Too often we go about our days by rote, never really looking at the why, as in “what's it all about and why am I doing this anyway?” which too often lead to a profound sense of uselessness, of meaninglessness. In this podcast you'll explore in specifics how you might be able to find the value and meaning in your everyday activities, which in turn can lead to much more personal life-satisfaction. https://www.youtube.com/@Dr.NoelleNelsonUp
For researcher, professor and author Zach Mercurio, “mattering” is not a new buzz word: it's a primal human survival instinct embedded in our brains from 6 million years of programming, and something businesses need to take very seriously. Zach is an expert in what makes work meaningful, and to him, the facts are clear: Meaningfulness is not developed through a program or initiative — it's developed and maintained through human interactions. He and Maril discuss why it's so important for people to know that they're significant to others; why often, we blame humans for problems that are actually the fault of bad processes and systems; why your organizational purpose needs to be rooted in truth; why so much of Zach's work involves taking the intuitive, common-sense ideas of natural leaders and trying to make them common practice. Learn about: 6:39 Why people problems are often system problems 9:26 Creating environments where people matter 15:16 The difference between having purpose and being purposeful 25:07 How to create a meaningful purpose 28:06 Why mattering is as important as belonging 35:40 How leaders impact employee mattering 41:10 How invisible leaders transform organizations 45:20 Becoming a better leader by changing how you see people — Zach Mercurio, Ph.D. works with individuals and organizations around the world to forge purposeful leaders who cultivate more meaning, motivation, well-being, and performance. He is a positive leadership and organizations researcher and Honorary Fellow of Psychology in the Center for Meaning and Purpose at Colorado State University. He is also the author of “The Invisible Leader: Transform Your Life, Work, and Organization with the Power of Authentic Purpose.” His research has been awarded by the Association for Talent Development and The Academy of Management and he contributes regularly to international media outlets. A "calling" is defined as something that gives you personal, social, or moral significance. For me, and for many physicians, the practice of medicine is a calling. Those in pursuit of a calling generally are on one of three different paths: the identity path, the contribution path, and the practice path. Dr. Kira Schabram goes over her research in this area and talks about why the practice path is the one to be on. Dr. Kira Schabram, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Management at the University of Washington Foster School of Business. 50 years of research has shown an individual's sense of purpose and understanding of how they matter to an organization predicts motivation, productivity and the performance of an individual and the overall business. A lack of feeling relevant and connected to the purpose within a job or organization is one of the drivers of the Great Resignation, Quit Quitting or whatever term is being used to refer to good old fashioned disengagement. This suggests that one of the most important steps an organization can take to engage and attract great talent is to help them understand how they matter to the organization, the people they work with and the work that is done. Zach Mercurio is back on the Growth Collective podcast for a third time to talk about lessons he's learned through his own research and the work he has done with hundreds of companies to help them cultivate positive cultures that enable more meaning, mattering, motivation, wellbeing and performance. Listen in as we talk about how mattering sounds touchy feely but it's not, the power of making sure employees feel seen, the incredible impact of creating a culture that humanizes, dignifies and grows people and considerations for organizations navigating the hybrid/return to office world. Suppose all of humanity was infected by a virus that left us all infertile--no one will come along after us. How would you react to such a world? Agnes Callard of the University of Chicago says she would be filled with despair. But why does this seem worse than our own inevitable deaths? Callard speaks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about the meaning of life, and what exactly about the end of humanity is so demoralizing. The conversation concludes with a discussion of whether humanity is making progress.
The Meaningfulness of Relevant Stories In this episode Sarah Elkins and her guest, Greg McDonough, an accomplished entrepeneur and finance consultant, discuss the importance of telling one's story in a meaningful and relevant way so that it resonates with the audience in a way that can be both compelling and inspiring. Highlights from the episode: Your strengths are your stories. Sharing somthing meaningful so that it is relevant. People want to see that these stories are possible and achievable. It's not about your story, it's about how your audience receives it. Be conscious of where you are in the moment and how the moment is going to reflect in your stories going forward. We manage their risk-taking so they can sleep better at night while also managing their business to produce the after-tax cash flow they need. It is a tricky combination but through a team approach, we are able to achieve these goals together. In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana.

The quitting trend that started during the pandemic is still here, and it's not going away anytime soon. Job market trends are important to real estate investors because housing markets rely heavily where people are working. In this episode, you'll hear about how the job market has changed, why more workers are quitting or changing the way they work, and the kinds of jobs they are seeking. (1)Hi, I'm Kathy Fettke and this is Real Estate News for Investors. If you like our podcast, please subscribe and leave us a review. This quitting trend has been called The Great Resignation, but a new study by McKinsey and Co. describes it as The Great Attrition which is now turning into The Great Renegotiation. This is happening because more and more people are rethinking their work-life balance and renegotiating the terms of their employment with a greater emphasis on their personal lives. The Great RenegotiationTo get an idea of the magnitude of the change we're seeing, data from the US Department of Labor shows the voluntary quit rate is 24% higher now than it was before the pandemic. Companies are scrambling to fill positions and keep them filled. In April of last year, there were 9.3 million job openings. Fast forward to May of this year, and there were 11.3 million job openings. That's an increase of two million unfilled positions. As the McKinsey study points out, there's a huge mismatch between the number of available jobs and the number of workers eager to fill those positions. What the study reveals about the current situation is that many companies are trying to fill an abundance of traditional positions with traditional workers, and that's where things have changed. Although some 60% of workers are still traditionalists, according to this analysis, there's a growing number of workers who won't accept the old way of doing things. The McKinsey analysis includes survey responses from 13,000 people in six countries who answered questions between February and April of this year. 6,294 were Americans. One of the authors of the report, Bonnie Dowling, says of the work world: “This isn't just a passing trend, or a pandemic-related change to the labor market. There's a fundamental shift in workers' mentality, and their willingness to prioritize other things in their life beyond whatever job they hold.” She says: “We're never going back to how things were in 2019.” (2)Why Are the Quitters Quitting? The results show three patterns among the quitters.1 - The first is a desire to “reshuffle” their careers. That's driving the reshufflers from one industry to another. In fact, 48% of the non-traditionalists are reshufflers. But the exchange of employees is not balanced so that some industries are losing more workers than they are getting in return.2 - The second pattern shows a desire to “reinvent” their careers. That might take the form of an employee transitioning from a traditional full-time job to one that's not traditional. That could include work that's part-time, temporary, remote or non-traditional in some other way. 47% of the survey participants fall into this category.3 - The third pattern is one the study calls “reassessing.” That's when people quit their jobs altogether to take care of personal needs and reassess their priorities. They might quit to take care of children, older relatives, or even themselves. Discontent Varies from Country to CountryThe desire to quit varies from country to country with India at the top of the list for discontent. The study shows that more than 60% of the workers in India want to leave their jobs. The second highest level of discontent was in Singapore, at 49%. The other four countries in this study include Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Taken together, 40% of the participants expressed a desire to quit within the next three to six months. So what is it that makes a job that motivates workers to quit or to stay? The survey says that workplace flexibility is the most important factor in preventing employees from quitting. Meaningfulness of work is also right up there. Other factors include support for an employee's health and well-being, a safe workplace, and inclusivity. Geographic ties also play into this equation, although it could be a moot point with remote workers. The things that drive employees away include a lack of adequate compensation. No surprise there. Following that, employees quit when the job doesn't live up to their expectations. It could be a lack of career development or advancement opportunities. They also want reliability and support from colleagues, and bosses that are caring and inspiring.Five Worker PersonasBut that's only part of the picture. The analysis shows a total of five worker personas with the traditionalists accounting for the largest share. They are the first type of persona and make up 60% of the workforce. The four other personas account for the remaining 40% and they are the ones who are most likely to quit in the next several months. The second type of persona is the do-it-yourselfer. This type of employee places a high value on workplace flexibility, although a high wage offer could draw them back to the traditional workforce. The analysis says they are typically between 25 and 45 years old, and want more autonomy in their jobs. That could drive them to self-employment or non-traditional full- or part-time jobs, or gig work.Third is the caregiver. These are the people who quit their jobs to care for others, and wind up passively looking for a new job. For them to return to the workplace, they need a flexible schedule and a lot of support.Fourth are the idealists. This category includes students and younger part-timers, typically between the ages of 18 and 24. They don't have a lot of financial obligations yet, and are looking for work that is more meaningful. They want flexibility, career opportunities, meaningful work, and people in their work world that are reliable and supportive. Compensation is not as important.Last but not least are the relaxers. These people don't really care if they have a job or not. They may be retired, or job optional, and might return to the workforce if the job is sufficiently important or meaningful.Employees Have Raised the Bar on their JobsDowling says of this work trend that: “People aren't tolerating toxic bosses and toxic cultures anymore, because they can leave and find other ways to make money without being in a negative situation.” She says: “There are more opportunities for work now than ever before with our increased connectivity.” What this shift in worker mentality says to me is that a large number of people are reevaluating their work-life balance, and getting their lives into focus. That's not always easy to do because we are confronted with so many distractions. My husband Rich is a professional coach and conducts a “Focused Investor” presentation at the end of each year. It helps people focus on where they are now, and where they'd like to be a few years down the road. You can do this at any time of the year by watching a replay of his latest presentation on YouTube. How do we experience hope in this moment? Today's guest, Pastor Mike Ashcraft, shares how to shift our view of hope to focus on the present instead of the future. Ashcraft is the senior pastor of Port City Community Church and author of To Be Concluded: How to Prevent Your Past from Piling Up and Find Hope for Your Future. We explore the common tendencies of focusing on the past with "rose-colored glasses" or shame or on the future with striving or anxiety. Centering our attention on the present feels counter-intuitive. Pastor Ashcraft emphasizes the purpose of redemption to address our current needs, not just the past or future. He notes how we can benefit from living with awareness of hope in each moment. Mike illuminates the opportunity for living exists only in the present moment. He shares his journey of discovering the need to shift our attention to today. Ashcraft also shares the current reorientation occurring among believers. We discuss the kingdom of God as a "now" concept instead of a "someday" idea. Mike and I talk about the way scripture defines faith journeys and the purposefulness of the space between a promise and its fulfillment. He describes Exodus as a story of God's people learning to steward freedom. Pastor Ashcraft notes that most people like the idea of growth, but only to a certain point. We don't often embrace the extent of stretching required for profound faith. We discuss the pitfalls of Western culture in which we struggle with trusting in God instead of our own understanding and effort. Mike shares the importance of taking time to experience God in the moment. He defines grace as the force by which we remain faithful, sufficient for the moment in the moment, like the air we breathe. Grace in the moment gives us hope for the future, because it is available in each future moment. Ashcraft debunks the myth of things getting easier once we get more skilled or experienced in our calling. We discuss the danger of hoping in the fulfillment of a request and missing the blessing God offers with his presence. Pastor Ashcraft shares how we often struggle with destination thinking. He describes the issues with plotting out "if this, then that" in our faith walk instead of trusting God step by step. Mike explains that we don't need to diminish or minimize our pain. We can bring the full weight of our pain to the Lord and experience the fullness of his grace. He also shares the increased joy available when we experience God in each moment. He states the nature of this shift as being about rhythm, not pace. Mike encourages listeners to take time to pause and reflect on the conclusion of seasons as well as believing in God for now and the future. Professor Debbie Haski-Leventhal understands resilience. Her personal story of growing up in an ultra-orthodox Jewish family but became secular at the age of 19. Her family were some of the first families into the Kabbalah centre, decades before Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow made it famous. She watched first hand, how power and money change people from their original intentions of doing good. Her story talks about child abuse, emotional abuse. This is not just a story about religious cults. This is about all cults, gurus that abound themselves on people's suffering. We talk about how to know if you are in a cult, whether it is a workplace, political party, self help gurus and anyone that denies you access to "special knowledge" that makes you feel less. We discuss how she overcame 18 years of brain washing to restart her life. Her latest book is called "Meaningfulness" and gives the tools to work your way back to find purpose in life beyond cults and anything that reduces your ability to question or flourish. After leaving the Kabbalah Center she moved to Jerusalem to study philosophy at the Hebrew University where she also studied a Master's in Management of not-for-profits and a PhD. Are you living your moments? How do we live in order to finish our days with a "good death?" Dr. Pamela Pyle shares profound insights from her experience as a physician in Rwanda and the United States when working with terminal patients. Dr. Pamela Pyle is a Board-Certified Internal Physician, chairman of Africa New Life Ministries, national/international speaker, and host of the Hope for Every Season podcast. She is also a regular contributor for outlets such as The Epoch Times and Christian Post, As a doctor to terminally ill patients for 30+ years, Dr. Pyle has had countless end-of-life conversations both in state-of-the-art hospitals in the US and in more nascent clinics in Rwanda. In 2018 a dying patient comforted her with the words, “It's okay, I am going to have a good death.” Her peace through her suffering inspired Dr. Pyle's quest for the answers to the question, “What are the ingredients of a good death?” A Good Death is Not an Event, it's a Lifestyle is the message of the ingredients and her tool for evangelism through sharing her best death found in Jesus Christ. Dr. Pyle's hope is that the ingredients for a good death make one's suffering a little less and their joy a little more. We discuss the ways we get distracted by urgency and miss the most important moments and features in our lives. Dr. Pyle asks herself three questions to keep herself aligned with living a meaningful life: Am I truly living my moments? Am I fully breathing my purpose? Am I confident of my destination? Pamela illustrates these principles of living with true meaning through sharing insights learned from patients as well as her own experiences. She emphasizes the power of focusing our full attention on those with whom we have opportunities to spend our time. Noticing and edifying others with genuineness is encouraged. Dr. Pyle notes how living our moments today prepares us for a good death in the future. Pamela states that living intentionally hinges upon relational mindfulness. She recommends random kindness as a daily goal. Dr. Pyle also emphasizes the need to watch others' expressions to fully understand how we impact their hearts. Pamela encourages listeners to understand discovering purpose as a process that requires listening to the Holy Spirit while remaining trustworthy in each small step. The way we live determines how others experience Jesus through us. Pamela recommends following through on our purpose. She defines a "good death" as the exclamation point on a life well lived. Dr. Pyle describes a good death as a lifestyle, not an event. Pamela shares the vital element of meaningfulness found only in Christ, who ensures us of our eternal destination. Dr. Pyle promises to make a personal visit (during her 2022 visit to Rwanda in July and August) to any child sponsored by listeners who mention her name in an email to africanewlife at www.africanewlife.org .
