"It just felt like the right time. My body hasn't held up to the training necessary to compete. There's nothing I can really do about it. I'm so thankful for the career that I had. It's led me to some of the best connections and relationships in my life. I couldn't imagine I would've got this far when I started. The competitor in me believes there are things I could've done that I didn't but that's how it goes in this sport. You're never going to be truly satisfied." After eight years of running professionally, Eric Jenkins has retired. The announcement was made on the latest episode of The CITIUS MAG Podcast. The Portsmouth, New Hampshire native finished his career with personal bests of 3:35.94 for 1500m; 3:53.23 for the mile, 13:05.85 for 5000m and 27:22.06 for 10,000m.  He broke out as a junior at Northeastern when he ran 7:46.21 to finish second in the 3,000m at the NCAA Indoor Championships (the ninth-fastest performance in NCAA history at the time) only to be DQ'ed controversially. He went on to transfer to Oregon and finished second at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championships before winning two individual indoor titles at 3000m and 5000m. Jenkins graduated and signed with Nike and spent time working under Alberto Salazar and the Nike Oregon Project, Pete Julian and the Union Athletics Club and Andy Powell. While many people within the track and field community may think of him for his reputation as a fun off-season guy or his hilarious Instagram videos, many don't realize just how intense he was as an athlete. It showed when he finished fourth at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, qualified for the 2017 World Championships and managed to win the Millrose Games' Wanamaker Mile and 5th Avenue Mile. Listen to the full conversation on The CITIUS MAG Podcast for more stories by Jenkins including being a punk in high school, deciding to take the sport seriously/breaking out at Northeastern, #FreeJenkins, landing at Oregon and winning two titles, his time at the Nike Oregon Project and what he considers his best race ever. On this Andy Powell interview: Tracing a lifetime of musical success to ONE bold move he made, early on in his career (with Richie Blackmore)… Tons of stories: opening up for The Who for his first gig (age 14), Deep Purple… working with Tom Dowd, Miles Copeland, Martin Birch & Bill Szymczyk… smoking hash in Marrakesh… Seeing Clapton, Hendrix, Cream, Fairport Convention, Peter Green, John Mayall (w/ Mick Taylor) in concert… the deliberate decision to come up with the twin lead guitar sound. His work ethic and how it informed his attitude and success in music… Being so broke, the band was literally starving… What business old record companies were REALLY in, and why “It's not about Andy, it's about the Band.” AWESOME convo with a lovely guy Cool Guitar, Music & ELG T-Shirts!: http://www.GuitarMerch.com   Andy Powell is a founding member and guitarist of the British rock band Wishbone Ash. 50 ans et pas une ride !

Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes.  My name is Jon Birdsong and I'm with Atlanta Ventures. Product of the Week: Last week we covered an innovative hardware product to deter car break-ins, this week we're back at it with another hardware company led by Akshita Iyer. This company is called Ome. Ome upgrades your kitchen starting with the most vulnerable and dangerous areas - the stove. More specifically the stove knob. Ome Kitchens smart knobs connect to your mobile app so you have full control of the stove, even when you're not in the kitchen. Akshita turned down $800k from the Shark Tank judges,  a product and name iteration before their current offering today. From the sounds of it, product is being developed and stoves are getting smarter and safer. Give Ome Kitchen a look.   Another product of the week is called BackSpace run by serial entrepreneur, Faiz Imran. After successfully building a marketing agency and working with dozens of influencers and builders of online communities, he saw and felt the acute pain that brand builders and community galvanizers face which is monetizing their community. For example, let's say you're a fitness influencer through Instagram and Tik Tok and want to engage deeper and deliver differentiated product offerings throughout the community experience. Enter BackSpace where communities around people and products can engage through live chat, premium community levels, and simple mechanisms to up sell and cross sell passionate consumers. If you or any of your friends have built substantial communities online, check out BackSpace.  Companies Worth Applying To:  This week the company worth applying to is called Itential as they are looking for a Senior Accountant. This would be a great opportunity to work with a software company from a finance perspective and get great experience a level or two under C-level leadership. Ian Bresenhan, is the CEO of Itential and they make it simple for businesses to navigate a dual network ecosystem into one. What does that mean? Over the past few decades companies have built their businesses on physical or on-premise networks. Then the cloud came along. Now, how does a business who has some networks on prem and some networks in the cloud co-exist, coordinate data, and seamlessly operate. Welcome to Itential. They are hiring for several roles.  Events to Put on the Calendar:  Atlanta Healthcare Entrepreneurs Meetup is on Wednesday, October 5th with Atlanta Ventures Partner A.T. Gimbel who will be interviewing Ascend Medical CEO, Jason Madsen. The topic of conversations will be around the lessons and learnings Jason experienced co-founding WellStreet Medical and now running Ascend Medical which brings the doctor's office to you. Ranging from telemedicine to home visits to mobile testing, Ascend is reimagining the healthcare experience starting with location.  Beta Product of the Week:  This company is truly laying brick by brick and producing a strong foundation and that company is called ToolPath. Andy Powell, co-Founder of Atlanta success story CallRail, is on to his next company which is focused on manufacturing technology. ToolPath is making it easier to create CNC machined parts — from prototyping to mass production, and they are doing this by building cloud-based CAM software to automatically create g-code programs for CNC machines. Let's elaborate on those hieroglyphics.   CNC machining is a procedure used in most manufacturing operations. CNC stands for Computer Numeric Control and deals with the use of a single-setup or more computer to administer actions of different machine tools and in ToolPath's case, specifically mills for now. And CAM stands for computer aided software. So now with ToolPath, the opportunity for CNC just moved from the horse and buggy to a car because the software brings accessibility and convenience to the CNC market. Keep tabs on ToolPath and go to their website for an early look.    Annnnd, that's 5 minutes. Thank you for listening to Five and Thrive. We provide 5 minutes of quality information, so you can thrive in the upcoming week. Please subscribe to the show and spread the good word!  Resources discussed in this episode:   Product of the Week:  Ome Kitchen BackSpace Companies Worth Applying To: Itential Rolls Open Events to Put on your Calendar:  Atlanta Healthcare Entrepreneurship Meetup  Beta Product of the Week: ToolPath

This week's guest is Johnny Gregorek, a 1500-meter runner for ASICS who will be representing Team USA this weekend at the World Championships in Eugene Oregon. Johnny is a 3:49 miler and 3:34 1500m runner who made the final in this event back in 2017 and is back with even bigger goals this time around. He's been splitting his time training between Boston, where he just finished his first year of law school, and Seattle, where he's coached by UW distance coach and middle-distance guru Andy Powell. Johnny and I had a fantastic conversation about his perspective as one of the veterans of the 1500m on the U.S. scene, giving us an insight into his wisdom as well as his humor and his super positive attitude. We also talked about his background as a steeplechaser, his Massachusetts and Rhode Island roots, and how he's managed to balance being a law student and a professional runner. You can root for Johnny and the rest of Team USA at the World Championships in Eugene Oregon starting this Friday, July 15th. We have a ton of programming coming your way from the CITIUS family, including group runs, live shows, daily podcasts and newsletters, and much more so you'll be able to follow along with every minute of the action and get exclusive behind-the-scenes tidbits. I'm personally looking forward to finally joining the crew in Oregon after covering USAs remotely and can't wait to share plenty more takes, writing, and talking with you as we all watch Worlds together. Learn more at citiusmag.com/summerofhayward and follow CITIUS on all your social media to stay in the loop on the latest. Don't forget to follow us on Instagram at @runyourmouthpod as well and subscribe to show us your love. Enjoy the show! On reacting to making the team with a 6th-place finish at USAs: “No matter if you have the standard or not, everyone's just trying to win the race you're in. Initially when I crossed the line, my initial emotion was disappointment that I hadn't gotten in the top 3 or won the race.” On 1500m tactics: “As I've gotten older as an athlete, I've realized that part of why I always had a big kick at the end of races was actually a lack of trust in myself and my fitness. I'm actually more proud of the races where I've put myself in the mix and executed a plan with authority.” On being a veteran on the U.S. middle-distance scene. “I've gone through failures and setbacks that a lot of the younger guys haven't experienced yet. It's great to see these super talented guys crushing it, but personally I know that I've had to overcome a lot. That's its own advantage that I draw confidence from.”

In a nation of rugby heroes, Jamie Roberts has become a legend. Jamie Roberts is your quintessential hard man: a six-foot-four, 17-stone slab of rippling muscle, conditioned to run hard into other huge men in an arena where physical dominance is the prime currency. Yet away from rugby, he's a mild-mannered and thoughtful man - a qualified doctor with a thirst for knowledge and a curiosity about the world around him. It's an intriguing contradiction. In his first full season with the Cardiff Blues he was picked by new Wales coach Warren Gatland in the Grand Slam-winning side of 2008. He was still establishing his position in the national team when he toured with the 2009 Lions, emerging as Player of the Series. He went on to win 97 Test caps and play for clubs in Paris, London and Cape Town, yet his career has seldom been straightforward. A fractured skull was one of many injuries he had to overcome, and from the start he had to juggle the competing demands of university life and professional rugby. The joy of Six Nations success with Wales was balanced by heartbreak in the World Cup and disappointment against southern-hemisphere teams, while major trophies at club level proved frustratingly elusive. In this colourful and frank account of a sterling career, Jamie Roberts reveals all about life on tour, in boot camps and in dressing rooms filled with once-in-a-generation characters such as Mike Phillips, Andy Powell, Shaun Edwards, Martyn Williams, Brian O'Driscoll and Johnny Sexton. He also shares his views on concussion in rugby, the failings of the professional structure in Wales and the vital role of old-school team-bonding.

Post By: Adam Turteltaub Andy Powell is Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer, Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Flex, a global technology manufacturing company with approximately 160,000 employees in over 100 manufacturing and services sites spread out over 30 countries. When he entered the compliance role there he realized that, realistically, the compliance team couldn't be everywhere all the time. He also sought to enhance the compliance and ethics culture.  To do so, he embarked on a strategy of normalizing compliance, making it a part of every manager's job.  That, he knew, would require making managers both responsible and accountable. His solution: create an integrated scorecard that leaders could manage against and would provide valuable insights to the compliance team.  As he explains in this podcast, you can't expect managers to be accountable unless you can show them how they are doing. The scorecard provides the hard numbers managers need.  To create it, he worked cross-functionally to gather data points from across the organization, including employee engagement surveys, helpline data, and even external benchmarking data.  The information is represented graphically along with insights from the compliance team.  Some of the data is macro.  Some give insights as finite as production lines. How powerful is this tool?  Day to day it helps identify hot spots and generate improvements.  As importantly, the CEO typically asks each manager to show it to her whenever she travels around the company. Listen is to learn more about the benefits from creating an integrated scorecard.

This week’s guest is Amos Bartelsmeyer of Nike and Bowerman Track Club, a 3:53 miler who represented Germany at the 2019 World Championships. We talked about his path from Saint Louis to Georgetown to Seattle and finally into the professional running world and how he got there. We also talked favorite race memories, go-to cocktails, short-shorts versus half-tights, and more. After graduating Georgetown University in 2018, Amos Bartelsmeyer moved to Seattle in hopes of being coached by incoming University of Washington coach Andy Powell. Despite being unsponsored, he was able to find a training group and came into 2019 on fire, eventually earning a Nike sponsorship and a spot at the 2019 world championships representing Germany. Since September, he’s been a member of Bowerman Track Club and recently ran 1:49 in the 800 and 3:38 in the 1500 in his first races in over a year. Amos is racing at the Trials of Miles Texas Qualifier presented by Citius Mag this weekend. Sons blushed and became soft peaches in the hot backseats of cars, never even wanted the front seat. Or, I was the son, but it’s nice to be plural and grand and count the dandelions in right field as friends, which I picked in the ancient way of boys who’s fathers tried to metaphorically light fires under their asses, there I go again, I was the boy, who was mediocre at boy at best, first boy, if it makes a difference being a minute closer to your father’s father, and I don’t remember if I plucked maybe a little out of spite because my dad told me metaphorically to quit picking dandelions, or if when he mentioned them they sounded like pixy stix in the outfield during a tee ball game, which due to the smallness of five-year-olds mostly happens very close to home plate, and dandelions pluck so satisfyingly like plonking open a can of coke (let us use plonk’s secondary definition of playing on a musical instrument – the coke tab – laboriously or unskillfully) and their frilly heads spin when you shush them in your hands like you’re warming them. If you build it then some of the angels will come to plop down in the outfield, finger the dirt and rest their heads on tender blades while the pop flies pock the earth around them. ————————————– Andy Powell called us from New York, NY. Aired Thursday, 8 February 2018, 7:00 PM ETFrom Rock To New Age Soul - Creating A New Musical Genre with Former Wishbone Ash Guitarist Ted Turner and MajellaWhen English guitarist, songwriter and singer, Ted Turner, best known for his work with the 1970’s rock band Wishbone Ash first encountered English singer, songwriter and actor, Majella, in 2005, neither imagined their initial friendship, borne out of admiration for each other’s professional abilities and unique musical styles, would one day result in a union that would not only culminate in marriage, but also in the birth of a brand new musical genre that fans have quickly labeled “New Age Soul.”Although aware of each other’s drive for creating music, neither could have imagined the synergy to be found through collaboration. Their music, which comes from the heart and the depths of their souls, is, they say, not just a beautiful testament to their love, but a reminder that the heart connection is where we overcome our greatest obstacles and live the fullest expression of who we really are. Pivotal to the creation of their songs and music is their acute awareness that the planet is hurting. They are committed to using their musical platform to raise awareness of this crisis, and, as vegans, to support a world based on “compassion instead of cruelty.”In this week’s program, Ted Turner and Majella join Sandie to discuss their individual and collective stories, what Ted learned from Buckminster Fuller, and how their passion for the planet, for animals, for humanity, and for each other inspire them in their daily lives and in the creation of their music, which we will be able to sample.About the Guest: Ted Turner and MajellaBest known for his work with the 1970’s rock band Wishbone Ash, in which he was famed for his twin lead guitar instrumental arrangements alongside Andy Powell, English guitarist, singer and songwriter, Ted Turner’s distinctive style of lap steel guitar contributed to a variety of Wishbone Ash recordings. Acknowledged as one of Rolling Stone’s ‘Top Twenty Rock Guitarists of All Time,’ Ted was also invited to play on John Lennon’s iconic album, Imagine. After extensive touring with Wishbone Ash, Ted left the band in 1975 to pursue a personal pilgrimage. Whilst traveling, he was drawn to the comprehensive works of Buckminster Fuller, becoming involved in the ‘World Man Band’ (alongside Michael Mitchell) – an initiative designed to raise global consciousness through rock music.Ted reunited with the original members of the band in 1987 to record Nouveau Calls for Miles Copeland III’s No Speak label, and then rejoined them in 1989. Since leaving the band for the second time in 1992, Ted has continued to explore eclectic musical influences which have formed his latest album, Better Together, a collaboration with his wife Majella, whom he is excited to introduce to the world.English singer, songwriter, and actor, Majella, began creating as a young child, and by her early teens was showcasing her songwriting skills around the U.K. Her rich ancestral Celtic roots had always been a driving force in the composition of evocative songs that tell stories. She continued to develop this passion when training in Drama. As a young budding artist, she was focused on combining her love of music and theatre, and also as a playwright, directing and performing in a series of popular and original musical plays, which explored the gritty reality of the community in which she lived. With the aim of liberating younger audiences, her plays encouraged them to be bold in seeking their dreams. Educating children not only defined her as a person but also as an artist – a period of her life that she refers to as “paid therapy” in that, she found her students to be her greatest teachers.Visit: www.tedturnerandmajella.com
