Betwixt The Sheets: The History of Sex, Scandal & Society

Picture a serial killer in your mind's eye. What do you see? More often than not it will be a man.Statistically that's accurate, but it doesn't tell the whole story. Whilst it's perhaps not the most worthy feminist cause to jump behind, the issue of gendered narratives is a fascinating one - and what better way to look at it than through the lens of serial killers?Kate is joined by Tori Telfer, author of Lady Killers: Deadly Women Throughout History to explore the story of one of America's most notorious female serial killers: Nannie Doss, aka the Giggling Granny. William Thompson certainly was not the first person involved in the con game. We can assume people have been tricking and cheating each other likely since there were people to trick and cheat. We really don't know a whole lot about William's life. He just sort of pops up in the historical record when he starts getting noticed around the streets of New York City -- which, as you might imagine, is not good for the con business. All month long, we’ve been exploring how authors like you can leverage their writing skills to secure more readers for their books. Today’s we’re looking at a different aspect of writing for readers: freelancing and podcasting. Now, you may not think of podcasting as writing, but for many of us, our episodes are scripted and outlined, and we spend just as much time writing the content as we do reading it into a mic. You also heard in the first episode of the month how my freelance writing career better prepared me for a career as a publicist. Today, we’ll hear from full-time freelancer, podcaster, and book author Tori Telfer, who has created an ecosystem of content creation that all feeds on each other. When we’re talking about freelance writing, we’re talking about paid writing gigs. Not highly paid writing gigs, but actual compensation other than publicity. I think this is an important distinction because while it’s great to write an op-ed or guest blog to gain exposure for your book, you’ll want to be wary of outlets asking you to write longer journalism pieces without any compensation. Plus, wouldn’t it be nice to BE paid for exposure?About Tori TelferTori Telfer is the author of Lady Killers: Deadly Women Throughout History and Confident Women: Swindlers, Grifters, and Shapeshifters of the Feminine Persuasion. In this week's book “Confident Women: Swindlers, Grifters, and Shapeshifters of the Feminine Persuasion” the author wrote about many different types of scams, from false Russian royalty to shady spiritualists to straight up grifters. We don't like to admit it, but any one of us could fall for the lies of a good scammer, especially when they are telling us something we are desperate to hear. This book isn't the story of one scam, or even one scam artist. But we are going to focus on just one of these scammers and what she took (besides just money) from her very rich, very famous victim - New York Times bestselling author Jude Deveraux. I'm joined by certified fraud investigator Ed Stolle, whose real passion is to keep the youth in his church from falling for the biggest scam of all – that the object of their faith isn't real. “We judge women criminals more harshly. Women get judged twice: once for being a criminal and once for being a woman." When you hear the names Anna Sorokin or Elizabeth Holmes, what comes to mind? Does it ever strike you as interesting that society has such a fascination with women con artists? That their trials inspire countless magazine articles, TV series, and even podcasts? Enter Tori Telfer, author of the book ‘Confident Women' published by Harper Perennial, a collection of vignettes about some of the world's most infamous female con artists. Released earlier this year as a sequel to ‘Lady Killers', her first book which the New York Times described as a "thrilling character study of the most diabolically complex, fascinating female psychopaths in history”, which was also published in Brazil, Poland, the UK, Spain, and Korea. Tori graduated magna cum laude from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts in creative writing. After college, she worked in children's publishing and taught before going freelance. She is also the host of three podcasts about women who break the law: Criminal Broads on the Lit Hub Radio network, Red Flags on Investigation Discovery, and Why Women Kill, on CBS All Access. On this episode, host Eva Hartling catches up with Tori to discuss what makes women con artists unique, what draws other women to fantasize about emulating some of these criminals' confidence, how gender bias affects the way women who commit crimes are perceived, and the continued high rates of incarceration for women in America. This season of The Brand is Female is brought to you by TD Bank - Women Entrepreneurs. There’s a cultural misconception that women can’t be serial killers. Statistically, men commit far more murders than women, but the number of female serial killers and their disturbing methods might surprise you. Women tend to kill for gain, but men need less provocation to kill and there’s often a sexual component.Author Tori Telfer of Criminal Broads joins us to discuss the sinister ways in which women kill their victims, and tells us about a Hungarian village where a pack of women known as the "Angel Makers" poisoned 40 people. Once upon a time, a girl learned to sing before she could talk. Her name was Celia. She began singing to her siblings and cousins at bedtime, but a voice like that needed to be shared. Everywhere she went, she sang. She sang when she was in pain and she sang when she felt incredible joy—shouting an exuberant “¡Azúcar!” to her adoring fans. In glittering gowns and extravagant, ruffled ensembles, Celia filled the airwaves with her unique sound. Her talent earned her the name “The Queen of Salsa” as she spread Cuban music throughout the world.About the Narrator:A talented and versatile actress, Justina Machado continues to endear audiences and earn critical acclaim with each new role.Machado can currently be seen starring as the lead in Netflix’s highly-reviewed reimagining of Norman Lear’s ONE DAY AT A TIME opposite Rita Moreno. When you think of serial killers throughout history, the names that come to mind are ones like Jack the Ripper, John Wayne Gacy, and Ted Bundy. But what about Tillie Klimek, Moulay Hassan, Kate Bender? The narrative we’re comfortable with is the one where women are the victims of violent crime, not the perpetrators. In fact, serial killers are thought to be so universally, overwhelmingly male that in 1998, FBI profiler Roy Hazelwood infamously declared in a homicide conference, “There are no female serial killers.”Lady Killers, based on the popular online series that appeared on Jezebel and The Hairpin, disputes that claim and offers fourteen gruesome examples as evidence. Though largely forgotten by history, female serial killers such as Erzsébet Báthory, Nannie Doss, Mary Ann Cotton, and Darya Nikolayevna Saltykova rival their male counterparts in cunning, cruelty, and appetite for destruction. Each chapter explores the crimes and history of a different subject, and then proceeds to unpack her legacy and her portrayal in the media, as well as the stereotypes and sexist clichés that inevitably surround her. The first book to examine female serial killers through a feminist lens with a witty and dryly humorous tone, Lady Killers dismisses easy explanations (she was hormonal, she did it for love, a man made her do it) and tired tropes (she was a femme fatale, a black widow, a witch), delving into the complex reality of female aggression and predation. Featuring 14 illustrations from Dame Darcy, Lady Killers is a bloodcurdling, insightful, and irresistible journey into the heart of darkness.
