We can sit here and explain the episode title, but the episode itself will do that. Dylan has a nice death. Justin geeks out to a natural phenomenon. Marcus has no friends. Tyler takes matters into his own hand with some difficult pitches to judge over. Part 1: The Budget Bois rate and review Tyler's revised game-winning submission, "Dungeon Defenders 2". Part 2: Dylan, Justin, and Marcus pitch games to Tyler for judging. We think you're awesome. You'd be even more awesome if you visited our website: www.budgetbitspodcast.com. And we love you. MWAH.
Today it's Mike, Kelly and Paul talking about the most disrespected genre in video games, Tower Defense! The crew starts out talking about recent video game and anime purchases because we're a bunch of nerds and we can't help ourselves (3:30) before moving on to how Tower Defense games even got started and evolved to the well oiled machine we see today (18:20). Next let's talk about straight Tower Defense games with no frills like Bloons, Kingdom Rush, and more (38:30). Following that we've got the hybrids where TD is combined with other genres like Castlestorm and Mindustry and more (1:11:30). And we wrap things up with what is probably the most popular TD subgenre, the TD/3rd person hybrid, featuring games like Orcs Must Die! and Dungeon Defenders (1:46:30). Today we look at the RPG Tower Defense game Dungeon Defenders! We may had held in some emotion and lashed out a bit on this episode but what can I say that just our opinions as fans.

Dungeon Defenders is a tower defense RPG that has been for nearly eight years. Now, from Kickstarter to PAX South 2020, it's time for Dungeon Defenders: Awaked. Developed by Chromatic Games, Dungeon Defenders: Awakened marks the epic return of the multimillion-selling co-op tower defense RPG series. We got the chance to speak with one of the game's producers Alec Saáre, while at PAX South 2020 about the title, the journey to the showroom floor, and just how the studio was able to complete the game in only 11 months. In the interview included in its entirety above, Saáre explained how Dungeon Defenders: Awakened aimed to take everything that existing fans loved about the first two games while also improving on it for a new audience.

It's been a week of ups and downs for Team OLL this week. Non-Intern Simon did his back in, but did meet his best mate Terry Alderton. Ann burst her eardrum, but she did find the smoke machine at our last Marioke session. Ste got caught googling Evangeline Lilly, but he did get to google Evangeline Lilly. This week's Super-Special Guest was Phillip Asha from Trendy Entertainment. He had flown in from Florida to come on the show and boy were his arms tired! As well as giving us a chance to use that extremely poor joke Phillip was here to tell us all about Dungeon Defenders 2, how it is hard to make a sequel to a well-loved game and to not give us an exclusive. We also used Ann to calculate how much Trendy Entertainment had grown by and we think the answer she gave was correct. Not only that but Doctor Avatar and Sega Badawi gave their usual excellent contributions, but it is the final appearance of Derek Williams for a while. Hopefully he'll return again soon. Perhaps he'll even be at our Christmas Party, which we subtly mention during the show. At the time of writing over half the tickets have gone so we advise buying your ticket now (unless you weren't coming anyway (which is a impossible situation)). Oh and it was Non-Intern Simon's birthday! Happy birthday Non-Intern Simon! Cheerio! The Number 9 Portal has been opened. Forty five minutes until the Wii closes. Wait, wait, don't tell me - Stephen, Donald and Austen have returned with another round of gaming misadventure. Donald leads off New Business with an appropriately quick round of the PSP Warioware-style RPG Half-Minute Hero, in which the Time Goddess is a firm believer in the power of capitalism. His main event, however, is his 2012 Most Anticipated Game - Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward. Donald and Austen tag-team the two platforms of this visual novel/adventure game while trying to avoid kicking dogs and harebrained puns. Austen follows up with a Vita triple play: the indie puzzle platformer with unique artstyle (tm Player One Podcast) Dokuro and the Assassin's Creed game you're not hearing about, Assassin's Creed Liberation. He completes the set with the rhythm game/RPG hybrid Orgarhythm, where you fight gods with the power... of DANCE! Stephen rounds out the games with the PC/PS3 tower defense game Dungeon Defenders, which has some trouble with teaching you how to build towers, and a comparison of the console and handheld versions of Skylanders: Giants. Is the Activison money-printing machine as strong as ever? (If you're confused about the gameplay in Orgarhythm and Dokuro, we recommend these gameplay videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPtiUbpQr00 for Orgarhythm, and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLiGj6TS84A for Dokuro) After a peek into the psyche of the NWR forums with Now Posted, Whatcha Been Watching covers Stephen's continuing Deep Space Nine exploits and the Alvin and the Chipmunks Halloween special, Donald goes for the crab juice in The City of New York v. Homer Simpson (instantly putting him over certain GameTrailers hosts), and Austen picks and rolls through TMNT 2012, various Nickelodeon game shows and the start of the NBA season. With only a few days left before November 18, the panel decides to look back at the Wii era (error?) in the feature discussion. Wanting to avoid a five-hour podcast, the focus is on the games - including more Sonic and the Secret Rings discussion than any podcast ever - and what the legacy of the Wii could mean for the WiiU. As usual, the show ends with some healthy Mushrooms, including another call for decorum in online gaming, a much-needed retirement, and the ruining of a host's New Year's Day plans. By the time you hear this, the NWR Live Telethon For Child's Play will have come and gone - and you witnessed the Super Smash Brothers of podcasting. Lee! Shoemaker! 8-4! Player One! Red Velvet! And Taking it OVER $6000! (For the kids.) But we couldn't have done it without your help, Thank You! If you haven't donated or missed the telethon you can still donate and listen to segments of the show as they become available. Recorded on October 11, 2012 with Brian Fife, James Fingal and Thomas Westberg. Many games treat loot as another facet of levelling with different mechanics. Jim, Brian and Tom all have issues with the way that loot mechanics appear to be evolving in current games. Jim also has a principled objection to the way that loot reinforces materialism/consumerism. Many themes from Episode 5 - Grind are invoked. Loot can be a great cause of stress. First, rapidly-levelling players often “grow out” of their loot and gear needs to be constantly refreshed for a player to remain competitive. Games like Torchlight or Borderlands also throw a great volume of loot drops at players, which requires effort to sort and sell. Still, loot - particularly interesting and creative loot, has the ability to tug at our heartstrings. Brian, Jim and Tom discuss the Gameological Society’s ‘best treasure ever’ bracket and their own favorite in-game items. Links to referenced items: Starcraft, Limbo, Passage, Domesticated Foxes, Material World, Dead Space, God of War, Legend of Zelda, Dungeons and Dragons, Elder Scrolls, Borderlands, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Torchlight Two, Diablo, Bastion, Boxinalia, Inner Wealth, Dungeon Defenders, World of Warcraft, Wowhead, Dragon Kill Points, Best Treasure Ever, Wabbajack, Fallout 2, Alien Blaster, Steam Tonk, Nethack, Mjollnir.

Recorded on August 28, 2012 with Brian Fife, James Fingal and Thomas Westberg. The group tries to avoid talking about Farmville-type games unsuccessfully, and eventually pulls the focus around to the new wave of F2P games, converted MMOs like DDO, free to play monetization models, the “whales” that support them, and the impact these models have on gameplay and experience. Tom argues that future MMOs must be free to play, and unless Blizzard has another rabbit in their hat WoW is likely to be the last smash-hit subscription-supported MMO. Brian sings the praises of World of Tanks as an ‘almost perfect’ free to play design. The group wraps up with some discussion on the major technology platforms, PC, iOS, Android, Xbox, PS3 and how they support F2P. Send your emails to noexcusesvtw@gmail.com. Question of the week: What are your thoughts on The Elder Scrolls online. Does it interest you, or what would you like to see in it?

Oh, and there's also some Dungeon Defenders talk inside as well. The issue starts out with a dissection of Kotaku's gut. Should you buy Kirby's Return to Dream Land? For everyone that doesn't hate fun, the answer is a resounding "YES!" Afterwards, I get into the issues with Dungeon Defenders and its menus. And boy, are there issues. The podcast closes with a quick round up of some news I find interesting. Please note that due to yesterday's Return to Dream Land PlayBit, this week's PB & Jason arrived a day late. Expect next week's PB & Jason to hit the site Wednesday night, like normal. Enjoy the show!
