President Xi Jinping has stressed the importance of strengthening exchanges, promoting understanding and expanding cooperation between the Chinese and American peoples in order to continuously give new impetus to developing relations between the two countries.Xi made the remarks on Tuesday in reply to a letter from John Easterbrook, grandson of former United States General Joseph Stilwell.Stilwell was a four-star general in the US Army who had visited China five times between 1911 and 1944, and lived in China for 12 years. In his reply, which was published on Thursday, Xi thanked Easterbrook for his letter sharing stories about the friendly exchanges that Stilwell and several generations of his family have had with China.Xi said that from the Stilwell family, he could feel the goodwill of the American people toward the Chinese people.Stilwell was an old friend of the Chinese people, who gave active support to China's cause of liberation and progress and made positive contributions to friendship between the two peoples, which the Chinese people will never forget, Xi said. The general served as commander of US forces in the China-Burma-India Theater from 1942 to 1944 and is fondly remembered as a hero who fought side by side with the Chinese people during the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45).Last month, representatives of the fifth generation of Stilwell's family visited Chongqing in southwestern China, where his former residence is located, to attend events commemorating the 140th birth anniversary of Stilwell. Easterbrook delivered a video message, while his daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren attended the events in person.Xi said he was delighted to see that Stilwell's dedication to China-US friendship has been passed down to the fifth generation of his family.Noting that China and the US had jointly fought against Japanese fascists and for world peace in the past, Xi said that, looking to the future, the two countries have every reason to help each other achieve success and common prosperity. The foundation of China-US relations lies in the people and the source of strength comes from the friendship between their peoples, he said.Xi said it is his hope and belief that Easterbrook and other members of the Stilwell family would continue to contribute to promoting friendship between the two peoples. He also invited the Stilwell family to visit China more often. This was Xi's second reply to American friends in recent weeks in which he has stressed the significance of amity between people for bilateral relations.Last month, Xi said that "the hope and foundation of the China-US relationship lie in the people", in his reply to a letter from the US-China Youth and Student Exchange Association and friendly personages from all walks of life in the northwestern US state of Washington.Diao Daming, a professor at the School of International Studies at Renmin University of China, said that the short interval between the two reply letters reflected the Chinese president's high regard for China-US people-to-people interactions and also indicated the direction for consolidating China-US relations.Over the past years, Xi has replied to dozens of letters from Americans who are dedicated to promoting US-China friendship, including Sarah Lande, former president of the Iowa Sister State Friendship Committee, and a group of US high school students studying Chinese at Niles North High School in Illinois.Diao added: "In fact, people-to-people exchanges have always been integral to China-US relations in history. Such exchanges in different fields have played a crucial role in deepening and stabilizing bilateral ties at key junctures."He noted that although the smearing and demonization of China by some people in the US have had a negative impact on American public opinion with regard to China, it is still in the interests of the two peoples to promote stable China-US relations through dialogue and cooperation.Reporter: Mo Jingxi

Host Gregg N. Sofer is joined by Husch Blackwell senior associate Rebecca Furdek to discuss the recently concluded Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) enforcement action concerning McDonald's and its former CEO Stephen Easterbrook. In November 2019 McDonald's fired Easterbrook “without cause,” entitling Easterbrook to a large package of compensation. Later, after a second internal investigation uncovered additional indiscretions and falsehoods, McDonald's sued Easterbrook to claw back $100 million-plus in compensation.Enter the SEC: it commenced its own investigation, culminating in an order finding that Easterbrook violated the anti-fraud provisions of the Securities Act of 1933 and the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and that McDonald's violated Section 14(a) of the Exchange Act and Exchange Act Rule 14a-3 because it “failed to disclose that the company exercised discretion in treating Easterbrook's termination as without cause in conjunction with the execution of a separation agreement valued at more than $40 million.”The order breaks new ground for the SEC in its claims that McDonald's use of discretion regarding Easterbrook's termination was a “material element of CEO compensation,” as Mark Cave, Associate Director of the Division of Enforcement later termed it. Gregg and Rebecca discuss the implications of the SEC order, as well as the substance of the strident dissent entered by two of the Commission's commissioners.Gregg N. Sofer BiographyGregg counsels businesses and individuals in connection with a range of criminal, civil and regulatory matters, including government investigations, internal investigations, litigation, export control, sanctions, trade secrets and regulatory compliance. Prior to entering private practice, Gregg served as the United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas—one of the largest and busiest United States Attorney's Offices in the country—where he supervised more than 300 employees handling a diverse caseload, including matters involving complex white-collar crime, contract fraud, national security, cyber crimes, public corruption, money laundering, export violations, trade secrets, tax, large-scale drug and human trafficking, immigration, child exploitation and violent crime.Rebecca Furdek BiographyA senior associate in Husch Blackwell's Milwaukee office, Rebecca is a member of the firm's White Collar, Internal Investigations & Compliance team and regularly helps clients navigate today's regulatory and government enforcement landscape. Before joining Husch, Rebecca served as Counsel to the Solicitor at the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), where she gained firsthand insight into federal agency rulemaking and administrative enforcement. Prior to her government service, Rebecca worked as an associate in the Washington, D.C. office of a global law firm, focusing on litigation and government enforcement, and began her legal career as a judicial law clerk at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. During law school, she served as a law clerk with the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.

Transitions are tough, even if you are a war hero. In this episode of Management Muse, former U.S. Army Special Operations (Ranger) officer and founder of the management consulting firm Praevius Group, Nate Self, talks about the most challenging transitions in his life, and shares his advice for more smoothly navigating work and home transitions. Episode Highlights Transitions can be: Structured or unstructured, abrupt or deliberate, and voluntary or involuntary. When possible, try to consider the complexities of transitions before making them. Abrupt and involuntary transitions are often particularly jarring. Group membership and other external resources, such as family, communities, religion, hobbies, etc, can provide critical support and stability during transitions. Timestamps [1:43] Nate gives examples of different types of transitions, including structured vs. unstructured, abrupt vs. deliberate, and voluntary vs. involuntary. [6:25] Nate talks about the importance of considering the challenges and complexities of transitions before making them. [9:50] Nate describes the value of considering important relationships during transitions. [13:26] Nate shares recommendations for managers, leaders, and organizations to help individuals make good transitions. [20:03] Geoff describes multiple role theory, and how it relates to transitions. [30:29] Cindi shares an example of how one person's transition can spur transitions for people close to them. [36:44] Geoff notes that managers are often the instigators of abrupt change for other people, and Nate shares how managers can blunt some of the counterproductive impacts of fast change. [39:15] The group discusses final transition advice for managers. Episode Quotes “The number one thing that's at stake in your transitions is the relationships that you have. I think it's the most important part of our lives. Our jobs are typically the source of most of our transitions… But there are some transitions that are relationship-based, and those are the most painful ones. Sometimes, when we change roles or we change jobs, we unknowingly have collateral damage in our relationships. So, that's one of the things I would want to emphasize: You have to account for your relationships first.” -Nate Self “People have a tendency, when they feel uncertainty, to just make a decision, even if it's a bad decision, because they just want to get out of uncertainty. Discipline yourself not to do that. Live with uncertainty and get yourself in a better spot.” – Cindi Baldi About Nate Self Nate is a former U.S. Army officer and founder of the Praevius Group Nate graduated from West Point with honors and served on active duty in Germany, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Nate speaks extensively on the topics of transition and personal growth, and he lives in Central Texas with his wife and four children. Resources Ashforth, Blake. When was the last time you remember a significant battle on the high seas? If you're like me, such an event may well be hard to recall. I'm old enough to remember the Falklands war, but that's about it. Today's guest on Thinking Ahead, author Gregg Easterbrook, wants his readers to understand that that blank space in most of our memories is not an accident. It has come about courtesy of a very particular set of circumstances that have arisen over the last half century—many of which come down to the superiority and effectiveness of the US Navy. In his recent book, Easterbrook coined the term “The Blue Age” to describe this unique period of history in which there has been peace and prosperity on the world's seas. Not since the Phoenicians, he points out, has there been anything resembling what we've seen in the last decades. And one of the consequences of that relative peace has been an explosion in global trade, and a subsequent and massive reduction in global poverty. So, can this unique historical situation continue?  What forces, or countries, threaten the Blue Age? Is a potential new naval arms race on the horizon? Is the Blue Age actually sustainable—technologically, geopolitically, and also environmentally? In this episode of the podcast, I speak to Gregg Easterbrook about his new book; the challenges of maintaining US Naval supremacy and using it wisely in a multipolar world; and the various other promises and perils that present themselves, many decades into the Blue Age.

In Episode 222 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Gregg Easterbrook. Gregg was a staff writer, national correspondent, and contributing editor at The Atlantic and has authored thirteen books about a variety of subjects including climate change, globalization, philosophy, and American football. Demetri and Gregg explore the subject of Easterbrook's latest book, “The Blue Age.” They discuss the extraordinary transformation of the international trading order that we've been living through over the last seventy years and the unique role that the US Navy and advancements in naval architecture and marine engineering have played in making all of that possible. It's difficult to appreciate just how unprecedented this long period of peace on the oceans has been and how extraordinary the deflationary pressures are that this peace has unleashed. It has also had huge implications for the expansion of credit, the reduction of volatility, and the growth in asset values in Western markets—topics that we've explored from a variety of different angles on the Hidden Forces podcast. What it might mean for our economies and for our lives if the Blue Age comes to an end is a question that is addressed directly during the first hour of today's episode. In the second half of today's episode, which is available to premium subscribers only, Gregg and Demetri focus on the economic and geopolitical aspects of the Blue Age, the likelihood of conflict on the high seas, the incentives for and against it, and its consequences for the global economy. They also discuss some of the factors driving the current bottlenecks in global supply chains, the shipping industry's contribution to this, and why Gregg feels that those bottlenecks will be largely resolved before the end of next year. The news and social media are replete with bad news. As the old saying goes, “If it bleeds, it leads.” And people naturally gravitate to negative news and data than they accept positive outlooks. A catalyst of bad news is technology, as it both conveys information and is the source of disruption. Technology gets blamed for many of the world's ills, and the technology industry relies on fear, uncertainty and doubt to sell products. Author and journalist Gregg Easterbrook has a different perspective – a cynical optimism, as he describes it – and catalogs why we're better off today than ever before, thanks in large part to technology, in his new book, It's Better Than It Looks: Reasons for Optimism in an Age of Fear. Easterbrook joins Pod2112 to talk about the appeal of "declinism" and why the world is much better than we perceive.
