Bunny is talking to Emma Bridgewater in her seaside garden.  Emma tells Bunny about starting up her business at the tender age of 23  - it now has a turnover of £30,000,000 - and how her stepfather's accountant ‘begged her to desist', not realising her determination, and how she wanted to help revive and preserve the pottery tradition at the potteries at Stoke-on-Trent. The days the factory not only produces thousands of pieces of pottery each week, but also has a factory garden, where she holds a literary festival most years. Emma was president of the CPRE (Council for Protection for Rural England), which highlights her passion for all things rural. Emma talks about how she developed rheumatoid arthritis due to her frenetic lifestyle, and how she has managed to overcome it with help from outdoor spaces, her garden and learning how ‘to walk back to herself'. Emma's appreciation of gardens comes originally from her two grannies who were both keen but very different gardeners. Emma's garden contains two verandas, important covered spaces for enjoying the fresh air in all weathers.  She talks about how she designed the verandas, her treatment of her pelargoniums, her love of herbs and her meadow. Plus how she added her amazing look out point with sea views created from a reclaimed metal staircase. Emma chats about her proposal to make a greenhouse from reclaimed windows that she is just about to embark on.  To see Emma's garden and kitchen see Bunny's YouTube video ‘Emma Bridgewater's kitchen, garden, veranda and lookouts'. #emmabridgewater #autoimmune

Sometimes life can lead us down paths that are exactly where we're supposed to be, but sometimes it can lead us directly to a crossroads. This is exactly what happened to Lisa and Jill (aka @thebirdsofbedfordshire) a now married lesbian couple who showcase their impressive collection of Emma Bridgewater mugs, bargain hunting at the discount aisle of M&S and their career as happy go lucky nurses on TikTok. But life wasn't always like this. Both Lisa and Jill were married to men, had seemingly 'perfect' lives, children of their own and a network of friends and family around them but deep down something very big was missing. That something led them directly to each other. ❤️

And so, in this episode Holly shares her secret to overcoming the business barriers you feel most insecure about and explains why women don't need to be experts when it comes to business – they just need to have one key ingredient to really make it.  Sharing her own story, which started around the kitchen table, Emma explains why being able to imagine your dream is almost like a ‘magic carpet' – once you're able to do it, you will fly. So is there something that really holds you back? Something that limits your confidence? The Beeswax Wrap Co. make an innovative yet tried-and-true product-that eliminates the need for cling film and unnecessary plastics in the kitchen, and the firm's founder and CEO, Fran Beer, is on the show this week chatting with Kelly. Fran founded the company after she fell out of love with the advertising world; after training to become an acupuncturist and studying the harm that plastics do to our bodies, Fran went looking for an alternative to cling film. Starting off by making the wraps in her kitchen as a hobby, family and friends subsequently took interest in them, so Fran set up a stall at a local market in 2017 and completely sold out, highlighting the huge gap in the market she'd identified. Five years on, the company's home is now in a 1,200 square foot workshop employing 10 staff, and the brand has partnerships with Cath Kidston, Prue Leith, The National Trust, Emma Bridgewater, and Liberty London. Fran speaking on beeswax wraps, “They can be used for up to 6 years, they're a really nice sustainable alternative to a single use plastic that many of us rely on every day of our lives.”02:07 - Beeswax wraps can make your food last longer “Cling film seals everything in, the mould and the bacteria builds quite quickly because the food sweats.” - Fran 02:54 - Why should you switch to a beeswax wrap? 04:10 - Fran tells Kelly how partnerships have boosted her business. 07:57 - How did Fran go about setting up The Beeswax Wrap Co. and make it what it is today?18:55 - Fran and Kelly discuss the pride and benefit of being a B-corp. 23:37 - “What's the next shift we need to see on plastic?” - Kelly 38:42 - Fran gives us permission to “be a bit of pain the bum” and ask questions about the source and sustainability of products. 39:47 - Find out how Fran takes her tea. Emma Bridgewater talks to Ivan Wise Emma Bridgewater discusses with Ivan six things which she thinks should be better known. Emma Bridgewater grew up in Oxford, the eldest of a large family. After studying English at London University, she joined a small knitwear firm, but soon realised that what she really wanted to do was start her own company. Her ‘eureka moment’ came in 1985, when she was searching for a pretty cup and saucer for her mother’s birthday. Discovering that everything in the shops was either delicate and formal, or heavy and clunky, she realised there was a gap in the market for pottery that was both beautiful and practical, and that reflected the relaxed, colourful, mismatched home she’d grown up in. Emma sketched out a mug, bowl and jug, and found a pottery in Stoke-on-Trent, the home of British ceramics to make them up. She then set about decorating them using cut-out sponges – a traditional technique that was to become her signature style. The designs were snapped up by Liberty, Harrods, and The General Trading Co, and Emma Bridgewater Ltd was born. The company now has a turnover of over £20m a year, and Emma Bridgewater products are sold worldwide. As the company grew, Emma was determined to keep production of the pottery in Stoke-on-Trent, and in 1996, bought a Victorian factory there. Emma Bridgewater Ltd is now one of the largest employers of potters in the area. In recognition of her work championing manufacturing in Stoke-on-Trent, Emma has honorary degrees from the University of Staffordshire and Keele University, and in 2013, she was awarded a CBE for Services to Industry. 'The Negro Speaks of Rivers' is read by Fiona Bennett. ***** The Negro Speaks of Rivers By Langston Hughes I've known rivers: I've known rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow of human blood in human veins. My soul has grown deep like the rivers. I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young. I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep. I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it. I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleans, and I've seen its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset. I've known rivers: Ancient, dusky rivers. My soul has grown deep like the rivers. From The Collected Poems of Langston Hughes, published by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Nearly 30 years ago Emma Bridgewater, a young English graduate, went shopping for a cup and saucer for her mother's birthday present. She couldn't find anything she liked - so she designed one herself, and enjoyed the process so much that she installed a kiln in her London flat. That small kiln has grown into a company with an annual turnover of 11 million pounds - and has revitalised the old potteries industry of Stoke-on-Trent. Her teapots and mugs covered in polka dots, hens, dogs and birds have become a staple of the middle class kitchen, symbols of cosiness and comfort. In Private Passions, Emma Bridgewater talks to Michael Berkeley about our yearning for home - all the more intense as working lives become overwhelmingly demanding. She reveals the tragedy at the heart of her life - her mother's riding accident, which left her gravely brain-damaged but still alive, for 22 years. Under the pressure of that sorrow, Emma Bridgewater describes how work became a marvellous escape. She chooses music to remind her of her mother, and which consoled her after her mother's death last Christmas. She talks too about the adventure of setting up her business in Stoke-on-Trent, bringing derelict factories back to life - but missing her four children as she spent hour upon hour on the road. Her music choices include Pergolesi, Purcell, Kurt Weill, Boccherini, a carol by Benjamin Britten - and the UK Theme Tune, which used to start the day on Radio 4 as she was getting up early to begin work. Produced by Elizabeth Burke. A Loftus production, for BBC Radio 3.

Libby Purves is joined by engineer Sam Etherington; Royal Marine turned actor Cassidy Little; ceramicist Emma Bridgewater and anthropologist and writer Professor Merry 'Corky' White. Sam Etherington recently joined Britain's engineering Hall of Fame for his pioneering work on wave energy. The 24-year-old engineer follows in the footsteps of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, George Stephenson, Barnes Wallace and other great British engineers. Sam came up with his design for a multi-axis wave converter after being buffeted by waves while out kitesurfing. Cassidy Little is a former Royal Marine turned actor. He plays the title role in Owen Sheers's play, The Two Worlds of Charlie F, which tells the story of modern warfare from a soldier's perspective. Cassidy studied performance and dance in the US before joining 42 Commando Royal Marines. It was while serving on his second tour in Afghanistan in 2011 that he lost a leg in an IED blast. The Two Worlds of Charlie F is touring the UK. Emma Bridgewater is a pottery designer who founded her ceramics company in Stoke-on-Trent in 1985. Her book, Toast and Marmalade and Other Stories, tells the personal stories behind her pieces - she is known for her quintessentially British designs such as trailing sweet peas, blue hens, tumbling roses, plump figs and black toast. Today the business remains committed to the manufacture of British pottery. Toast and Marmalade and Other Stories is published by Saltyard Books. Merry 'Corky' White is professor of anthropology at Boston University. Her book, Cooking for Crowds, celebrates its 40th anniversary with a new edition. Corky was a student and single parent when she started catering for Harvard academics to earn money in 1970. Every week she catered one or two dinners for 25 and one lunch for 50. She credits Julia Child with saving her from her early kitchen nightmares. Cooking for Crowds is published by Princeton University Press. Producer: Paula McGinley.
