Among the challenges of the past year, relationship building might be one of the toughest. Adrienne Craighead, the Director of Financial Development for Apparo, talked with Straight Outta Crumpton Host Greg Crumpton and Tyler Kern to talk about keeping people at the heart of business and life.Apparo helps "... local nonprofits leverage technology and improve business processes to expand their ability to create positive social change in our community."Craighead talked about building relationships through a screen during COVID. She started the job at Apparo when COVID hit. She still hasn't set foot in the office. This meant she had to be strategic on how to build relationships with the staff. She knew she had to put in quality time to make these relationships."I think that relationships should be at the heart of everybody's personal and professional relationships," Craighead said. "That's especially true in nonprofits. Everybody we encounter has a way to impact our world."One of the ways that can help people connect is through humor. Whitehead and Crumpton agreed that just having a small laugh can help connect and break up a work day's monotony. Whitehead described the levels of humor she uses when meeting people at networking events. She really enjoys when people get the spirit and roll with it and take it to the next level. What are some of the strategies Whitehead uses to build relationships? To her, there are motivations people to build relationships, and those include: personal, altruistic, or business. Meeting Crumpton, who supports Apparo, was humorous. Though when she went to learn more about him, she found his serious side on his LinkedIn page: "My personal and professional goals are to serve the people I'm working with and working for, and I carry this mantra in my professional life and my home life.""I always try to look at how I can help people," Crumpton said.

This was a really great conversation. Much of my conversation with Mario Hicks focused on the question of how expectations of fundraising professionals are evolving in the current climate. Mario is the VP of Financial Development for YMCA Buffalo-Niagara, the second oldest YMCA in the country. Buffalo-Niagara hosts one of the oldest Turkey Trots in the country which will celebrate it's 125th year in November. In addition to his leadership at the Y, Mario is a board member for AFP-WNY and is pursuing his doctorate in business administration.  Mario shared with me that during these challenging times, the YMCA has shifted its efforts to meet some of the most critical needs in their community. The pandemic has Mario contemplating some hard questions that he hopes will make for a better sector in the future. He anticipates the road ahead will include donors expecting more collaboration and more meaningful engagement which means fundraisers will have to be confident in and clear about their roles. Responsive's recovery plan is now available for free download (https://lnkd.in/dyhvmPv). We are grateful to all those who contributed to this summer resource. In the absence of financial frictions, the purpose of thin capitalization rules is to limit multinational firms’ possibilities of engaging in tax planning via debt shifting. This paper analyzes the effects of thin capitalization rules in the case where firms have limited access to external funding. First, we show that a host country allows positive internal interest deductions if its financial development is sufficiently low. This amount increases when the financial development of the host country worsens. Then we ask which of the two most common thin capitalization rules used in practice is better suited to maximizing welfare of the host country. We show that welfare under a safe haven rule is higher than under an earnings stripping rule if firms are not able to manipulate transfer prices. Welfare, however, can be higher under an earnings stripping rule if firms are able to manipulate transfer prices. The analysis provides an explanation for why countries differ in the strictness and in the type of thin capitalization rule.
