Today's episode is all about one of Eric Clapton's proudest moments. It all happened when he was asked to play on an album with one of the greatest musicians of all time. The thing that makes the story stand out is that it shows even the greats of guitar get nervous. In the episode, I share Clapton's story and what he had to say about his incredible and unique experience. But all of us have been there on a smaller scale – feeling nervous about playing in front of others. Everybody gets nervous, and everybody thinks there's someone better out there, even the greats. The key is just to stay relaxed. If you enjoyed this podcast, you can get my free “guitar secrets” video course which will help all beginners or those who are “stuck”. En 2016 publicó el álbum World on Fire. Happy Presidents day everyone! In this week's episode, as it's president's day, I thought it would be a good chance to take a dive into the life and times of George Washington, and I have to say I learned a lot in researching this segment. I love when folks use their gifts to do good in the world, and that's what today's good news story is all about, a project that Mark Knopfler and others put together. We take a another trip back to the 1970s, and with our special days of the week, it's a fun episode. I mention in a segment the song that is raising funds for teen's cancers. Here's a link. I mentioned my new single, Mist on the Mountain. You can find it a few places, here is a sampling. The early 1970s were full of triumph and tragedy for Eric Clapton. The Guitar God who had bounced from band to band - The Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith - finally went solo with mixed results. However, in 1971 Clapton struck gold on both sides of the Atlantic with Layla and his buddies in Derek & the Dominos. However, friend and guitarist Duane Allman died tragically in a car accident in late 1971 and while Clapton mourned his friend and longed for the love of his good buddy George Harrison's wife Patti, Clapton slipped deep into a heroin addiction. Once Eric came out of his fog, he knew he needed to get back to making music and needed a hit or else he might be written off as an over the hill (at 29) junkie. So he gathered some of his buddies from the Layla sessions, took up residence at a certain address in Miami and put together a million selling record with a #1 US hit with I Shot The Sheriff. You see the many faces of Clapton on here from the blues (I Can't Hold Out), to reggae (I Shot The Sheriff), to gospel (Give Me Strength). Opener Motherless Children is a tour de force with the slide guitar and the closer, Mainline Florida, features Clapton showing off his skills with the talk box. If this album hadn't sold so well, who knows what may have become of Eric and if we'd have been treated to all the amazing music he's given us over the last 50 years. Rik Emmett is a vocalist, guitarist and former member of the rock band Triumph, which earned 18 gold and nine platinum records in Canada and the United States in the late 1970s and early'80s. Triumph was known for its BIG live shows featuring lights, pyrotechnics, and lots of spandex (as was appropriate for the era!). Along with Rik's bandmates Gil Moore and Mike Levine, the power trio played loud, guitar-forward tunes with uplifting lyrics. 1981's Allied Forces sold over a million copies in the US and included the songs “Fight the Good Fight” and “Magic Power,” which—if you haven't heard it recently—merits a listen on your favorite music app. Eventually, disputes with the record label, the financial stress of touring / recouping advances, and intra-band competition lead to Triumph's break-up. In his new memoir, Lay It on the Line: A Backstage Pass to Rock Star Adventure, Conflict and Triumph, Rik shares insights into the trials and tribulations of the rock n roll life and how he has found peace as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. The band and has been inducted into both the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. In this episode, 'Rik and I discuss: How the pressure to churn out hits affects the songwriting process Why he started sharing his songwriting royalties with his bandmates Triumph's performance at the 1983 US Festival, which was founded by Steve Wozniak How a start-up network called MTV used a Triumph promo video to help fill its schedule The cruel arc of celebrity and how an artist deals with "the whimpering disappointment of general disinterest." ⭐ Rate and Review Crazy Money here. Rodney O'Quinn, Foghat's bassist since 2015 sits down to discuss their newest album SONIC MOJO, as well as reminiscing about tour life, the time he stepped away from music, and more.Biography (from Foghat website)At 5 years old, grabbing mom's vacuum cleaner like a mic stand singing “Hound Dog” by Elvis, Rodney O'Quinn was smitten and bitten by the music bug at an early age. By the time he was 11, a request from a friend simply saying “We need a Bass Player. You should get one!” would lead him to the first of many stages he would perform on.Straight out of High School, Rodney attained his higher education in Rock & Roll playing full time from 1984-1996 with various notable Bands out of the South East U.S. This included a 5-year stint with one of the South East's top touring/grossing bands, ELI which generated 2 well received albums. Averaging 240 shows a year left Rodney feeling burned out and ready for a change. He was leaving life on the road behind (or so he thought). In 2007 (Rodney describes it as an “itch that needed to be scratched”) music beckoned once again and he was compelled to answer. Rodney joined Pat Travers Band for what he thought would be a year or two on the road. Over the next eight and half years with the Pat Travers Band, Rodney played over 500 shows across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, U.K., Europe and Sweden and recorded 2 studio CD's and 2 Live CD/DVD's with the band. They also performed Live on the syndicated show RockLine Radio 3 times as well as a concert, “Live from Moondance Jam” which aired over 100 times on Direct TV.More than just a beast on the bass and a pretty face, Rodney used his business savvy background to handle many facets of the PTB organization. In 2010, he co-produced a run of shows that featured Pat Travers, Derek St Holmes, Mark Farner and Ronnie Montrose called Guitar Gods of the 70's. Along with other members of Pat's band, Rodney would play bass behind all of these Artists.During these extensive tours, as fate would have it, Rodney crossed paths many times with his friend and fellow bass player, Craig MacGregor of Foghat. After watching Rodney play, Craig Macgregor admired Rodney's talent and when the time was right, was called upon in 2015 to fill in for “Mac” and has since become a permanent part of the Foghat Family. Two years, 2 Foghat CD releases and 140+ shows (and counting) Rodney is honored to be able to add his touch to this piece of Foghat history. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast
Today is Sunday, April 16th, 2023 and I'm probably more excited about releasing this episode than almost any other I've ever been able to record up to this point in my journey as a podcaster. This episode marks a full-circle moment in my life of music so indulge me for just a second while I take you down memory lane a bit. On July 4th, 1999 I was a twenty year-old wannabe musician. Several college friends and I had made the trek from North Central Kansas all the way to Luckenbach, TX for Willie Nelson's 4th of July picnic. That day I got to see many well-known and legendary musicians, and most of them for the first time in my life. But about 4pm on that hot hill-country Texas day, an absolute freak of a guitar player took the stage. What I witnessed over the next 20 minutes or so left me with my mouth gaping wide open. That was the first time I'd even heard the name Monte Montgomery, but I knew what I was witnessing was other-worldly; it was almost like seeing something from a different dimension. What Monte could do on an acoustic guitar seemed unhuman. His ability was incredible but the sounds he could get out of that guitar we're unlike any I've ever heard. I've been a big fan of Monte's ever since then and today, nearly 25 years after seeing him play that first time, Monte Montgomery is our guest today on The Troubadour. As you'll hear in the interview, Monte has an interesting backstory from picking up a guitar for the first time when he was about 13 years old, to now, being known throughout the world as one of the best acoustic guitar players alive today. Guitar Player Magazine named him as one their “Top 50 All-Time Greatest Guitar Players” and he can often be seen sharing a stage with the likes of Tommy Emmanuel or playing All-Star Guitar Player showcases at NAMM. Fact is, he'll be playing on May 5th at the Dallas International Guitar Festival. He can often be seen at the legendary Saxon Pub in Austin and for our Oklahoma listeners, Monte will be doing a two night stand at The Blue Door in Oklahoma City on May 12th and 13th. Links for everything and some embedded YouTube videos of Monte shredding his Alvarez can be found in the show notes for this episode at thetroubadourpodcast.com And also, if you can find it in your heart to throw Carly and I a bone, we would love to have you sign up as a supporter on our Patreon page so we can continue to bring you interviews with these great artists like Monte. You can sign up for as little as $3.00 per month and we'll even send you some podcast swag for doing so So take action now and go check the “Support The Podcast” tab at thetroubadourpodcast.com. So let's get into it! Here comes Episode #172 of The Troubadour and our visit with one of the greatest guitar players to ever live, Monte Montgomery.
When we think of 80's glam metal, the first things we all think of are poofy hairstyles and slinky spandex pants, but the third thing we think of is amazing guitarists, the likes of which haven't really been seen either before or since. We go on a very deep dive into some of our (really Todd's, because this stuff wasn't really Blaine's cup of tea) favorites of the time. We also discuss some modern guitarists, and we even wax a bit philosophical about what this somewhat beleaguered and often maligned musical genre means to those of us who still find ourselves enjoying it today. Did we overlook your favorite guitar god or goddess from back then? Let us know by e-mailing us at tapeheads80@gmail.com, and they can also be added to our Spotify playlist or maybe even our Instagram profile. The world has just lost one of the great guitarists of a generation, the maestro himself Jeff Beck! Jeff represented so much for musicians because of his never ending strive for tone and proficiency as a guitar gunslinger. He reached millions through his decades of stellar recordings and performances that permeated our souls. He is the father of modern guitar instrumental music and pioneered the path for such guitarists as Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Al Di Meola and countless others. He was truly a risk taker and forged ahead in new styles of music that very few would ever dare to tread.“Jeff was a hero of mine on many levels. He gave us so much wonderful electric guitar music to enjoy. R.I.P. Jeff Beck.”Joe Satriani“There are few musicians in history who transcend their instrument of choice and reach a level of pure, beautiful expression. We are all so fortunate to have lived in a time when one of those rare gods walked the earth and shared his gift with all of us. Safe travels, Maestro.”Dean Brown (David Sanborn) “I had the honor of being featured together with Jeff on Tina Turner's recording of Private Dancer. Watching him in action Jeff had the innate ability to make one feel like both giving up on the guitar and trying harder at the same time. The God of Guitar Gods, there will never be another like Jeff Beck.”Hal Lindes (Hal Lindes)"In 1966, when I first heard the Yardbirds “Shapes of Things” … double lead guitar solo was so exciting it defined psychedelic rock and undoubtedly influenced Jimi Hendrix. There will never be another Jeff Beck, a once in a generation talent."Carl Verheyen (Supertramp) GUITAR TRAX is hosted by mulit-Emmy award winning guitarist Brian Tarquin featuring in- depth interviews with today's hottest guitar legends and airs every Monday night from 10pm-12pm on WFIT 89.5FM on the Florida space coast and can be streamed on WFIT.org. On the 3rd Episode of Shout It Out Loudcast's sidecast, The Zeppelin Chronicles, our hosts, Tom & Zeus, along with SIOL sidekick Murph and Jay Scott from The Hook Rocks podcast, review the 1970 album, "Led Zeppelin III." Led Zeppelin III often referrred to as the "acoustic album," has been often misunderstood. Filled with many acoustic offerings, the album still boasts several hard hitting classic Led Zeppelin songs, like Immigrant Song, Celebration Day and Out On The Tiles. After a grueling tour schedule Robert Plant and Jimmy Page decided to go to a cottage without running water or electicity in Bron-Yr-Aur, Wales. The two work on their songwriting with only acoustic guitars and a tape recorded. The results are the classic acoustic numbers on Led Zeppelin and other songs that would filter onto future Led Zeppelin releases. The band felt free to do whatever music they so desired. Led Zeppelin III was not only filled with rockers, but folk songs, ballads and perhaps their signature blues song, the classic, "Since I've Been Loving You." Although Led Zeppelin III went to Number 1 in the USA and the UK and went 6 times platinum in the United States, the album is still overlooked and definitely underratted, Led Zeppelin III is an album from a band with no limits to their musicianship or their lyrics and still on the ascension! The Zeppelin Chronicles breaks down Led Zeppelin III SIOL style. The guys discuss their connection with the album, the background of the album, the album cover and finally the songs. They rank the songs, then rank the album and album cover against the two previous Led Zeppelin albums reviewed. So tune in, follow, download and subscribe or face the "Hammer Of The Gods!" In Episode 19, we left off in August of 1996. We talk about a great Zoo Amp Season with Ted Nugent, REO Speedwagon, Styx, Def Leppard & several others. Max also takes another attempt at pronouncing "Longevity". Another legendary Metal show happened at the Diamond Ballroom with Sepultura & Biohazard. Max talks about seeing AC/DC with Bon Scott as well as Brian Johnson & recalls seeing Johnny Winter while on Qualudes. What could go wrong in that scenario? Stick around to the very end as we close with the legendary story of Max rescuing Steve Vai & his band from Sayre, Oklahoma after their tour bus burned down. Having a bad day? Lose everything to a fire? Have No Fear, Max is HERE!!!!!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Jeff Beck is a true legend and genius of rock guitar. From his early days in The Yardbirds, through his hard rocking 70s incarnations to today, he's an innovator & someone who likes to collaborate with others. I bought tickets to see him pre-COVID and had to wait 2.5 years to see him. It turned out that during that time he had been collaborating with raconteur/actor Johnny Depp to work on some covers and original material.Johnny's appearance midway through Jeff's performance at Royal Albert Hall on May 30, 2022 was exciting for everyone in the crowd. But did he really have the chops to perform with Jeff Beck and his band? Or was he a privileged Hollywood star who gets to work with Hall of Fame legends on a lark?We talk about Johnny's impact on the performance from May and we review their new album, 18, which came out later in the summer. Did Johnny up his game and give himself a new career option? Did Jeff Beck lower his standards for a chance at a one off char topper? Hear what Action Jackson & The Wolf have to say about that. On the 25th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1979 album by Rainbow, "Down To Earth." With Ronnie James Dio out of Rainbow, Guitar God, Ritchie Blackmore brings in Graham Bonnet to handle the vocals on this, his one and only album with Rainbow. The band also brought in old friend, Roger Glover from Deep Purple to produce the album, however Roger ends up writing the lyrics and joining the band as its new bassist. ARC favorite, Don Airey joins as well as the keyboard player. The sole remaining Rainbow member on the album was legendary drummer, Cozy Powell. This forgotten Rainbow album was sandwiched between three Dio led Rainbow albums and three Joe Lynn Turner led Rainbow albums. The album seemed to stray away from the familiar Rainbow sound and lyrics into a more commercial sound, especially with its two singles, All Night Long and their biggest hit, Since You Been Gone. This was Zeus' pick and as usual the guys breakdown the tracks and rank the songs. The boys then rank the album and album cover against the previous 23 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew Episodes. So don't cut your hair, lose the sunglasses and grab your favorite tube top and let's start Makin' Love .....
