What a busy day! I woke up at 6am, which never happens, even though I go to bed at 10pm.  I figured I'd better get up though since the monthly AdvoCat had to be sent out today at 10am and I had not written a single word of it yet.   Got it done and launched, then Judy Mills and Debbie Banks of EIA, met w/ Howie and I over Skype for an hour and a half, to discuss doing a side event at the CITES CoP17 in Johannesburg, SA, to raise awareness about tigers.   Ran from that straight to a closing on the sale of 310 Thomasdale Av in Haines City.  Jamie called me from there, in a hurry for me to return to the sanctuary because Gale has already left for the Taking Action for Animals Conference in D.C. and Jamie wanted to take some of the interns bobcat tracking where Thor was released last month.  She will switch out the cards in the camera traps while there.   I have a week and a half of contacts left, so I had to call my eye doctor and order more.  I'd much rather do it myself at Contacts.com but he needs the money, so I order through him.  He can't take credit cards, so that means mailing a check.  All a huge hassle, but I figure he doesn't have that many more good years left to work.   Judy has been saying she can't go to CITES because she's a consultant who doesn't get paid when she doesn't work and she'd be gone 2 weeks.  No one could train Jamie better to take over all this tiger protection in the wild stuff, so I offered to do her job for her (reporting for MacArthur Foundation on Climate Change) and let her keep the money.   We were discussing what sort of giveaways or enticements to get people to come to the tiger event, which would include a 10 minute tiger movie and a 10 minute tiger talk.  I suggested we white label 100 bottles of wine with NOT Tiger Bone Wine and an educational piece about how farming tigers is driving the extinction of tigers.  We offer them to the first 100 people who come to and stay through the entire event.  Then contacted the hotel to see if they can provide wine.   Yesterday I wore myself out, dragging Nest cameras and an extension cord all over the place to see if I can pick up a good enough signal to broadcast for Nest.  It would be a great way to reach a new audience.  I have a lot more dragging around to do today, but it's 90 degrees and I'm not sure how much more I can stand.   Then I got this nice note:   Hi Carole and Jamie,  I hope all is well. Just wanted to let you know we have submitted everything to Animal Planet today and are just waiting for feedback from their internal development team. Once they have looked over it, it will be passed on to the commissioner.   This can take a few weeks (given the number of pitches they receive) but we have a good relationship with them so I am hopeful that we can chase this soon if we don't hear anything in the next few weeks. I will keep you posted, the team have done all we can here so we have everything crossed. Feel free to get in touch at any time but I will update you soon.   Have a great day!  Kind Regards,  Naomi Channell. Casting Producer 344 - 354 Grays Inn Road. London   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/   I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.     You can help feed the cats at no cost to you using Amazon Smile! It’s about that time … time to get serious about starting training for Ironman 70.3 Traverse City, a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run triathlon set for Aug. 25, 2019. Yes, this race is 8 months away. There is plenty of time ahead to get ready for this inaugural race. And yet, if you’re like Heather and this distance and event is going to be a first for you, you just might be thinking of getting things rolling in the coming weeks, as winter gets underway. For Heather, the swim portion is definitely a key component of earlier-than-later training. As she shares during this episode, getting into the pool this month, at least a couple of times, is part of the plan. Heather talks with guests Rebecca and Tony Venticinque, both of whom are accomplished triathletes and seasoned coaches. Heather will be working with Tony and Rebecca, who operate Tri Again Fitness in Traverse City, as she trains for Ironman 70.3 Traverse City. Rebecca also shares her most recent full Ironman experience, a Nov. 4 race that almost didn’t happen in Florida because of Hurricane Michael. It was moved from Panama City Beach to Haines City, Fla. “After the hurricane hit … it was all up in the air even three weeks before the race,” she said. Tony was there as well, this time a volunteer and not competing as he has in two other full Ironman events. Rebecca talks about what it was like to complete this race in pretty warm conditions and, later in the race, a downpour. Rebecca and Tony provide a preview of what’s to come in Heather’s training throughout winter and spring and during the summer (open water swimming!) as race day gets closer. Tony and Rebecca’s coaching business also includes a team of athletes, many of whom are signed on for Ironman 70.3 Traverse City. They’re also hosting a 70.3 triathlon training camp, May 10-12, 2019, that is open to anyone interested in preparing for the Traverse City event – or other triathlons. Lodging, meals, group training, and plenty of optional topics will be discussed throughout the weekend. Full course previews of the Traverse City event also will be part of the weekend. With over 45 years of combined coaching experience, Tri Again Fitness has helped coach individuals to national recognition, club national team wins, multiple World Team qualifications at all triathlon distances, all-American honors, Boston Marathon qualifiers and helped countless athletes achieve personal bests and lifelong milestones. Tony has been coaching in one respect or another since 1991, and professionally coaching triathlon since 2006. Professional accomplishments at the USAT Club Nationals include winning the Division V in 2009 and securing runner-up at the Division IV in 2010. He’s also coached 21 age group athletes to 33 world team qualifications at the sprint, olympic, 70.3 and 140.6 distances over the past five years. Tony is a USA Triathlon Certified Level 2 Coach and USA Cycling Certified Level 2 coach. Rebecca is an athlete turned coach. She has coached since 1993 in various sports. She has a Bachelors of Science in Management of Health Services, Group Exercise certification from ASFA Personal Training Certification from ISSA. USAT (Triathlon) certification and USATF (Track and Field) certification.

Failure is not the end. You have probably heard that before and on some level you believe it. On another, you are embarrassed, ashamed or maybe even feel a bit humiliated by a recent failure or a string of failures that played out on a public or semi-public stage. I know I have bounced back from some failures quickly and been paralyzed by some of them for a long time. What enables some people to bounce right back from a failure? Why does failure not seem to get them down at all? Or at least on the surface not get them down? Is it resiliency? Is it determination? Is it genetic? After my divorce a few years ago I lost my nerve to be in public and speak and write new books. I was ashamed. Rather than be spurred forward to seek others I went inward. And not in a good way. So how could I have realized what was happening sooner and broken free and out and up? My guest today has written and complied stories on failure and how it launched the writers to whole other levels of success. On this episode she shares what she has learned and how you can reinvent failure into a launching pad for your next success faster and with more grace. Just a few years ago…with only a computer and a plan, Bobbi Govanus launched her own small business and soon realized that she had discovered a true niche within the computer training industry. Bobbi quickly grew that business from the basement of her Minnesota home by listening closely to her customers and providing customized computer training and solutions.  The company eventually brokered over 1000 high-caliber computer trainers across the United States and Canada and even served clients as far away as England, Japan, Germany and India.  She grew the company to sales of over 20 million.  In celebration of these and other accomplishments, Entrepreneur Magazine recognized Bobbi Govanus as their "Home-based" Business Owner of the year and Minnesota honored her as their Women in Business Advocate.  Bobbi is the VP of Marketing for Retriever Payment Systems providing solutions for businesses to take credit cards safely and grow their client base using Reward and Gift Card Programs.   For 2015 Bobbi has created the Reinvention Retreat bringing 20 speakers together to coach and assist those who want to make the rest of their life, the best of their life.  Bobbi published her first book in 2014, How to Pilot When We Were Raised to BE Stewardesses, Reinventing your Life with Passion and Purpose.  She currently lives in Haines City, FL with her husband Gary.  She can be reached at Bobbi @ MrktgMaven.com   www.ReinventAtSea.com

Strange Fruit #173: What If You Use A Wheelchair & You Need An STD Test?

Strange Fruit

“I just tested positive for syphilis.” That's the text message Andrew Gurza received from a recent partner, and like any responsible queer man, he knew what to do — if not exactly how to do it. Andrew wasn't sure if the local clinic would be able to accommodate the wheelchair he uses. "STI and STD clinics are kind of crammed in these really small areas where somebody with a big power chair like mine can't go," he says. He would also need people or equipment to lift him out of his chair and help him disrobe (unlike some other STDs, like HIV, the test for syphilis involves more than just drawing blood). He thought the hospital might be his best bet. "I think they were just surprised that I had come into an ER and not to a clinic that was for STI testing," he says. A doctor initially tried to persuade Andrew that he didn't need the test, but he insisted and the test was eventually administered. The whole long process (including an hour-long bus ride each way) made him realize that something needs to change in order for people with disabilities to more easily access sexual health resources. Andrew Gurza joins us this week to talk about an article he wrote on the subject for Out.com. He's also the co-founder of Deliciously Disabled Consulting and the host of the Deliciously Disabled podcast. He says gay culture, with its focus on aesthetics, is not always kind to those with different bodies. Potential partners often seem to see his disability and assume he isn't sexual at all. "All guys can ask me in the club or online or on Grindr is, 'Uh, can you have an erection? Can you have sex?'" he says. "Why can't you ask me something more nuanced and sexier than that?" We spoke with Andrew about the intersection of disability, queerness, and sexuality, and why our thinking about these things should matter, even to folks without disabilities. "In ten, twenty, thirty years, you might need some help too, and you might need a cane or a walker, and you might need some sort of assistive device," he says. "And when you do, wouldn't you want somebody to still find you sexy?" In our Juicy Fruit segment this week, we talk about a Maryland theater's plan to stage a production based on the life of Paris Is Burning star Dorian Corey. And we pay our respects to Mercedes Successful, the 12th (known) transgender person to be killed in 2016. As our Auntie Monica Roberts at TransGriot reports, the 32-year-old drag and pageant performer was found murdered in Haines City, Florida, and local media misgendered her in their coverage of the crime.
