Conversation with Illia Polosukhin (co-founder @nearprotocol) also known on the streets as The Black Dragon, recorded live during [Redacted] Bangkok 2024.Illia does A LOT of public appearances and interviews. On this interview we break norm and rather than focus of the tech (the WHAT) we focus instead on Illia's journey (Who and Why). Even though we only had 1 hour, the result has far exceeded our expectations. Some of the highlights:* Illia reads in Megabytes. How his life changed when someone gave him a CD ROM loaded with 700mb of .txt books fuelling his imagination.* Wild imagination and builder more from a young age. Not only did Illia start writing his own science fiction books when he was young, he also built a publishing platform to distribute them! Only catch - he never finished any of them as he got bored after he knew how things played out in his head.* Learning how to code at age 10; importance of family and supportive teachers in school. Building games and keeping cheat codes in summer camp and more!* Growing up poor, building character. How Ukraine has shaped VALUES.* Broken internet and role of MATHs, formal verification, and AI agents.* So much more!Enjoy

In this thought-provoking discussion with Can Gurel (Delphi), the NEAR co-founders share insights on Illia's work co-authoring the groundbreaking "Attention is All You Need" paper that introduced transformers, their vision for user-owned AI and democratizing access to AI capabilities and more. Key insights include: - How NEAR's original focus on AI developer tools led them to discover the need for better payment infrastructure for distributed workforces - Their framework for user-owned AI that optimizes for individual success rather than platform profits - Technical challenges and solutions for distributed AI training and inference - The importance of private computing for enabling user-controlled AI systems The conversation provides valuable perspective on the intersection of AI and crypto from pioneers who have worked at the cutting edge of both fields, offering insights into how decentralized technologies could enable more democratic and user-centric AI development. "The reality is we kind of have like a little bit of a model that some data we don't want to share... Your assistant will be able to help you with filing your taxes and finding ways to file receipts for expenses, and it will need to have access to all of this. One of our favorite pods as we were able to tackle two birds with one stone, the appchains vs. sharded L1s debate as well as key insights into the state of AI from Illia Polosukhin. The key questions we discussed is whether apps should continue to rely on shared, sharded chains, like NEAR, or if there's a stronger case for each app eventually becoming its own chain. This raises important considerations around sovereignty, composability, and scalability. At the core of this discussion is the idea that users want more control over their assets and a seamless, composable experience across different platforms. While singlechain solutions like OP Stack Chains or Cosmos SDK offer some flexibility, they often face significant scalability and interoperability challenges. This is where sharding, especially in protocols like Near, can provide a more scalable solution without sacrificing user experience. Their recent advancements, such as Chain Signatures and Nightshade V2, are paving the way for more efficient scaling. But, isn't this the same thing? Where do you draw the line between apps sharing global state vs. composability and sovereignty? What about customizability? For the first half of the pod, Andy and Illia went back and forth debating the tradeoffs of appchains vs. sharded L1s, and ended up on common ground. Then, for the second half Robbie, Andy, and Illia discussed the rise of user-owned AI. They discussed how the role of AI is becoming increasingly relevant in the blockchain space. The concept of "user-owned AI" is emerging, where AI tools could help reduce the complexity of building and maintaining infrastructure while giving users more control over their interactions. This shift towards AI could also play a significant role in improving security through formal verification, ensuring that smart contracts and protocols are more resilient against vulnerabilities. We had the chance to ask Illia a ton of questions about his vision for AI going forward and were pleasantly surprised. Very fun conversation starting off more technical and ending into more of the philosophical side with an focus on the evolution of AI. Enjoy! The initial scaling roadmap for Ethereum featured execution layer sharding. However, the rapid advancements of layer 2 scaling solutions in general, and zero knowledge proofs in particular, caused a restructuring of the original plan. The reason was that rollups would have required less changes made to Ethereum's base layer, hence lower risks. On the other hand, Near Protocol was designed from the ground up as a sharded system, capable of withstanding billions of transactions simultaneously, without sacrificing decentralisation or security.Topics covered in this episode:Illia's & Alex's backgroundsSharding and blockchain scalabilityChallenges of building a sharded blockchainNear namespaceShard security & validator samplingStateless validation and data availabilityState witnesses and chunk producersBlock productionShards vs. RollupsHow Near could further improveLeaderless chunk productionChain abstractionEpisode links:Illia Polosukhin on TwitterAlex Skidanov on TwitterNear Protocol on TwitterSponsors:Gnosis: Gnosis builds decentralized infrastructure for the Ethereum ecosystem, since 2015. What began as an AI company trying to seek solutions in order to pay remote (unbanked) workers, Near AI became, in 2018, Near Protocol. Its sharded design was inspired by modern database architecture and large language model (LLM) training. Near Protocol aimed to solve the scalability trilemma, through a modular approach, combining data availability sharding with stateless validation. By abstracting away archaic blockchain standards, Near basically enabled decentralised full stack development and, in terms of UX, a distributed custodial solution via chain abstraction and account aggregation. We were joined by Illia Poloshukhin, co-founder of Near Protocol, to discuss Near's journey, from AI company to high-throughput L1 blockchain, and how LLM training influenced the modular design choice.Topics covered in this episode:Illia's background in AI & MLScaling large language models (LLMs) and the role of attentionStochastic Parrot vs. Understanding spectrumFrom Near AI to Near Protocol and the role of LLMsHow Near abstracted the blockchain away and enabled decentralised full stack developmentDefining ecosystem standards to improve UXChain abstraction, account aggregation and interoperabilityChain threshold signatureNear's intent layerNear's modularity, Nightshade sharding & stateless validationEigenLayer integrationEpisode links:Illia Polosukhin on TwitterNear Protocol on TwitterSponsors:Gnosis: Gnosis builds decentralized infrastructure for the Ethereum ecosystem, since 2015. Illia is the co-founder of NEAR Protocol and Unchain Fund. We cover why context switching is a necessary skill for founders, Illia's recommended books, and the nuance of the Russian language in writing. “Find a mentor who's a few years ahead of you, like not too far, but like two, three years ahead of you, because those are people who still remember what they were doing in your position. And so they will be able to give you the most useful advice.” – Illia Polosukhin EPISODE GUIDE (LINKS, QUOTES, NOTES, AND BOOKS MENTIONED) https://www.danielscrivner.com/notes/illia-polosukhin-playbook FULL TEXT TRANSCRIPT https://www.danielscrivner.com/notes/illia-polosukhin-playbook-transcript CHAPTERS In this episode, we deconstruct Illia Polosukhin's peak performance playbook—from his favorite book to the tiny habit that's had the biggest impact on his life. In it we cover: (00:00:00) – Introduction (00:01:59) – Designing social graph in Web3 (00:04:01) – Why context switching is a necessary skill for founders (00:05:51) – Finding mentors who are just a few years ahead of you in business (00:10:56) – Building a great decentralized ecosystem requires high-level, small, agile teams (00:13:29) – Books Illia recommends (00:16:59) – The nuance of the Russian language in writing ABOUT ILLIA POLOSUKHIN Illia Polosukhin is co-founder of NEAR Protocol. NEAR is a layer one blockchain that's incredibly fast, has very low transaction fees and is climate neutral, in part because of its proof of stake model. It's traded on crypto exchanges under the ticker symbol NEAR, and has a market cap of just under $5 billion today. From 2020 through 2021, the developers working in NEARs ecosystem, that's everyone building applications on top of their blockchain quadrupled, making NEAR the second fastest growing chain behind only Solana. In this episode, Illia shares why he loves running daily and how it helps him remember to just put one foot in front of the other to accomplish anything; why he loves the book Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and how he applies that principle in his life and work; why he's fascinated with the concept of a social graph and how to build it into the NEAR protocol and why it's so important for building a better world in Web3; why he thinks everyone should find mentors that are two to three years ahead of them in terms of where they'd like to be and why he'd tell his younger self to focus on speed and velocity shipping quickly in everything that he does.

NEAR is a layer-one blockchain that's incredibly fast, has very low transaction fees, and is climate neutral—in part because of its Proof of Stake model. It's traded on crypto exchanges under the ticker symbol NEAR and has a market cap of just under $5B today. From 2020 through 2021, the developers working in NEAR's ecosystem—building applications on top of their blockchain—quadrupled, making NEAR the second-fastest growing chain behind Solana. Illia is an incredibly impressive founder, but more importantly, he's an incredibly thoughtful engineer, leader, and community builder who has built something incredible slowly and methodically, one step at a time.

Illia Polosukhin, Founder & CEO of NEAR Protocol, is this week's guest on Searching for Mana. Following on from the brilliant earlier episode with Marieke Flamant, Lloyd gets to the bottom of building a company sitting at the forefront of this potential paradigm shift to web3. Lloyd and Illia guide us through the technical intricacies of the platform, the wider NEAR ecosystem, building a leading developer community and bringing mass user adoption to blockchain, impacting the future of work, and Illia's own journey from Ukraine to Silicon Valley and now to Lisbon. Developing a fascination with programming from a young age and becoming one of the top coders in Ukraine, Illia represents one of the most informed individuals on AI, having worked closely on Tensorflow prior to pivoting from one of the Big 4, and into his own entrepreneurial journey with NEAR. In an enthralling conversation that spans the deeply technical discussion of DAOs, the NEAR platform and its similarities with Linux, with ideas around entrepreneurship, thought leadership and psychology, this episode is not to be missed. On top of all of this, Illia is also at the forefront of Unchain Fund - an initiative leveraging blockchain and crypto to get money into the hands of those who desperately need it in the ongoing Ukraine war, which raised over $1 million within 24 hours. Why he loves the book Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink, and how he applies the principles in it to his life and work. Why he's been fascinated with the concept of a Social Graph, how to build it into the NEAR protocol, and why it's so important for building a better world in web3. NEAR Protocol is a leading smart contract platform that aims for simplicity, security and scalability. NEAR was one of the first sharded blockchains and allows deploying smart contracts using Web Assembly on currently four different shards. NEAR's sharding design, Nightshade, splits the blocks into different segments, which allows for great scalability without negatively impacting user and developer experience. Since, its launch NEAR has evolved into one of the most active smart contract ecosystems.Illia and Alex, co-founders of NEAR, joined us to chat about the NEAR's protocol design and recent advances, such as the launch of Aurora, NEAR's EVM shard. Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) are entities that run on blockchains, make decisions collectively and probably never meet face to face. It's like corporations run over Discord, or as if Facebook Groups had money to spend. Priyanka Desai and Aaron Wright have started several for-profit DAOs that invest in companies and digital art via their startup OpenLaw and Illia Polosukhin, a co-founder of a blockchain called NEAR, is creating a sort of congress of DAOs in his ecosystem. This week's Unchained is my panel at Ready Layer One! We talk everything layer one with four key players and projects -- Illia Polosukhin of NEARprotocol, Zaki Manian of Cosmos, Rob Habermeier of Polkadot, and Arthur Breitman of Tezos — to find out how these projects plan to compete with Ethereum and attract developers and users. We discuss: What platforms they are building and at which stage in development they are How they differentiate themselves from Ethereum, and what problems they believe need to be solved How they plan to attract devs in an industry of network effects Whether or not Bitcoin and Ethereum are direct competitors Whether, in the long run, crypto will be more winner-take-all or there will be multiple, interoperable chains How they plan to bring new users into the space How they think the transition to ETH2.0 will shake up the existing blockchain space Take our survey! Guests:Illia Polosukhin (@ilblackdragon) - debating FOR the motionZaki Manian (@zmanian) - debating AGAINST the motionHost:Richard Yan (@gentso09)In a world where decentralized applications proliferate, will these applications be built on top of a few or many public blockchains? Exploration of this topic would help us understand the merits of the coexistence of many protocols. On the extreme, each dapp can have its own chain, so that the developers/community for each app can have maximal control over the full stack of their product. The guests we have for this episode have essentially voted on their position with their feet. The oligopoly advocate is cofounder of a layer-1 protocol, and the multiplicity supporter is a major contributor to one of the earliest, if not the earliest, blockchains designed with interoperability in mind.Be sure to also check out our previous episodes too, on Bitcoin's store of value status, tokenization and smart contracts, DeFi, bitcoin halvening, China's future in blockchain, and POW vs POS.If you would like to debate or want to nominate someone, please DM me at @blockdebate on Twitter. Please note that nothing in our podcast should be construed as financial advice.Source of select items discussed in the debate:Inter-Blockchain Communication: https://cosmos.network/ibc/Near protocol: https://nearprotocol.com/
