Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.  Today we talk about someone who is one of the most well-liked celebrities alive: Queen Latifah! Our guest today is KT from the great podcast "For Your Reference." Our B-Sides today are: Living Out Loud, Last Holiday, Just Wright, and Joyful Noise. We also discuss Queen's book, her iconic BET Lifetime Achievement Award Speech, her music career, and her chances of making it to E.G.O.T. status. There's lively discussion about her undeniable, universal likeability, her impeccable taste in leading men, a deep appreciation for Michael Ealy, and complements to Queen's performance in Bessie.  There's respect paid to the full life she's lived, there's criticism levelled at the basketball Common plays in Just Wright, as well as a thorough discussion of Paula Patton's contributions to the film. We marvel at the ‘90s sheen of Living Out Loud and the timelessness of Last Holiday's message and positive energy. And, finally, there's that scene between Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton in Joyful Noise. Be sure to give us a follow on social at @TFSBSide. Justin is also one of those guys, that if you're lucky, you have the good fortune in life to meet. He's as sharp of a woodsman as you'll find and an absolute killer in the whitetail woods. It's the first episode of #FanBoySummer, featuring one of the show listeners not only joining the show, but picking the topic! Today, Mikey, d$ (returning from his death bed), and #TwitterlessDrEarl welcome back Friend of the Show and Mr Independent himself, Jeremy Burgess.  First up, a gangsta' game of Rotten Tomatoes, honoring one we lost too soon -- Ray Liotta, and his best (and not so best) films. Then, Burgess' topic pick, figuring how we've done football and baseball centric themes, and so this time, it's all round ball.... Top Five Best Basketball movies. And it makes for an even better time when two of the four have only seen a marginal amount of hoops films, one has seen mostly documentaries, and the fourth being the only true basketball cinematic expert.  The movies discussed, and where they are streaming at time of recording:    The Air Up There (Hulu) Blue Chips (Prime, Paramount Plus, EPIX) Celtic Pride (for rental) Crimes of the Future (rental) Disappearance at Clifton Hills (Netflix) Duel (AMC+) The Fish that Pittsburgh (for rental) Glory Road (Disney+) He Got Game (TubiTV) High Flying Bird (Netflix) Hoosiers (for rental) Just Wright (for rental)     Last Days of Knight (Disney+) Lenny Cooke (for rental) One on One (for rental) Phi Slama Jama (Disney+) Scooby Doo Meets the Harlem Globetrotters (for rental) Semi-Pro (HBO Max) Slam Dunk Ernest (TubiTV; Crackle) Survive and Advance (Disney+) Tower (PLEX; AMC+) Uncut Gems (for rental) The Way Back (for rental) White Men Cant Jump (Amazon Prime; Paramount+; EPIX) Without Bias (Disney+)

Common is a man who is anything but, and he’s been evolving as an artist since the start of his three-decade-and-counting career when he was a young musician rapping about his love for hip-hop. These days, in addition to being a Grammy-winning artist, Common is an established actor, known for his work on AMC’s Hell on Wheels and films like American Gangster, Selma, and Just Wright. Common is what you’d call a conscious artist—someone who uses his platform to encourage social and political change. He believes it’s the responsibility of an artist to say, “I see what you’re going through, and I’m going to stand up and use my voice, my talents, and my energy towards making your world better.” In his song “Black America Again,” he uses the power of music to show us the problems that arise from systemic racism and what we can do to resolve them. Despite his success, he’s not living a life disassociated from the, er, common people. You might even catch him writing a new song in his car if you find yourself in traffic on the 405. Ultimately, Common is an artist who cherishes the opportunity to grow and evolve, so if he has it his way, he’ll be freestyling into his seventies. Common joins Off Camera to discuss the responsibility of an artist, the socio-economic underpinnings of hip-hop braggadocio, and why he loves to feel nervous when he’s starting a new project.

Knuckleheads with Quentin Richardson & Darius Miles

The legendary Chicago rapper-actor-writer-activist Common joins the guys on the latest Knuckleheads with Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles! The Chicago-born Grammy and Academy Award winner kicks off the episode by revealing that Canibus was the first person to bust his ass in the studio — but says that on the basketball court his first spanking was delivered by a neighborhood kid known as Speedy. From there, Common goes on to discuss two things that had a huge impact on his early career: Nas’s album Illmatic and the experience of working with Kanye for the first time. The guys then get him talking about what it was like to take his talents beyond rapping and how he landed his first movie role. That leads the three into a discussion of their all-time favorite movies, as well as the actors who made them. Common gets curious and asks the guys a few questions of his own, like what truly made them want to be ballers and when exactly they knew they were going to make it to the league. They each name their favorite young guy in the league and get hyped about the future of the NBA altogether. Darius gives love to Common for that time he dropped D’s name in a song ... “to have you tapping your head like Darius Miles” … remember? And finally, the guys have to ask what it was like to perform at the White House and just how dope it is to be a friend of the Obamas. Listen in to hear more from the guy who flat out does it all.

Mehcad Brooks is an actor, musician, and producer raised in Austin, Texas. From bringing characters to life on screen, to writing and producing films, and recording soulful music under an alias, award-winning actor and musician, Mehcad Brooks, has become known in the entertainment industry for his raw and refined talent, charisma, and moving presence. Throughout his successful and celebrated career Brooks is best known for his work in USA’s “Necessary Roughness,” for his portrayal of Terrence King, starring alongside Scott Cohen and Callie Thorne. He is also known for his characterisation of Eggs in Alan Ball’s HBO series “True Blood,” and for his work in ABC’s hit show “Desperate Housewives,” portraying Matthew Applewhite. Additionally Brooks starred in Noah Hawley’s docu-drama “My Generation,” and “The Deep End.” His film credits include his breakout role is Jerry Bruckheimer’s “Glory Road” as Harry Flournoy, which followed the 1966 first all-black college basketball teams starting line-up and their eventual NCAA national championship win. Brooks was also featured in “In the Valley of Elah,” “Adulterers,” “Wildlife,” “Just Wright,” and “About Last Night.” Brooks is currently starring in Greg Berlanti’s “Supergirl” as James Olsen in the shows fourth season, along with Melissa Benoist and David Harewood. You can catch his most recent film, Tyler Perry’s “Nobody’s Fool,” starring Brooks, Tiffany Haddish and Whoopi Goldberg in theatres now. While bringing characters to life remains one of Mehcad’s biggest passions, his love for telling stories through music is equally important.  Writing and recording under the moniker KING GVPSV, Mehcad recently released his debut, full length album “May 20th” on July 13, 2018.  The album features 16 soulful brand-new tracks, including the single “Tears Away” which has been featured in an episode of his series “Supergirl.”  The album was inspired by multiple near-death experiences that Mehcad has endured, all taking place on May 20th and forever changing his life. It’s a sad day for Movie B.S. with Bayer and Snider, on account of all the movies this week are lousy. “Robin Hood”: long and slow. “Letters to Juliet”: pretty generic rom-com. “Just Wright”: just wrong. Still, Jeff Bayer and Eric D. Snider managed to disagree on the extent to which each of the movies is bad. Then they talked about “The Apple,” a futuristic musical from 1980; played a depressing round of Pitch Me involving Carrot Top and Ben Affleck; and read some viewer mail. Speaking of which, send them some e-mails at moviebspdx@gmail.com!
