Cait interviews cast members for the new production of the Tom Stoppard move blockbuster, Shakespeare in Love, adapted for the stage.Young Will Shakespeare has writer's block... the deadline for his new play is fast approaching but he's in desperate need of inspiration. That is, until he finds his muse – the courtly Viola de Lesseps. This beautiful young woman is Will's greatest admirer and will stop at nothing (including breaking the law) to appear in his next play, disguising herself as boy-player Thomas Kemp. Against a bustling background of mistaken identity, ruthless scheming and backstage theatrics, Will's love for Viola quickly blossoms and inspires him to write his greatest masterpiece. The story is, at heart, a romantic comedy but it is also about the glorious world of show-business - nothing much changes in theatre and that London's Bankside in 1593 was much like commercial theatre today. Money men assert their power, scripts get rewritten, egos have to be massaged, rivalries develop and last-minute crises intervene. Yet, by the magic that is theatre - somehow Shakespeare manages to turn the distinctly unpromising Romeo and Ethel the Pirate's Daughter into the masterpiece that is Romeo and Juliet. We now join RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey on another visit to Tate Modern on London's Bankside to explore the work of Polish Artist Magdalena Abakanowicz who radically transformed textile work by taking her woven work off the gallery walls and turning the thread and rope into three-dimensional sculptures which were coined Abakans with Ann Coxon the Curator of the exhibition Magdalena Abakanowicz:  Every Tangle of Thread and Rope. Ann began by giving Toby a bit of background to Magdalena Abakanowicz life and work leading up to the time of the production of her Abakans and the reactions from critics, the general public and other artist to this radical way of using thread and rope. Toby and Ann then focused on the forest of Abakans which fill one of the large gallery spaces at Tate Modern talking about in some cases their almost human form, the natural almost muted colours of the thread and rope and how they fill the space with an almost earthy smell which underlines the feeling of being amongst a forest of the Abakans. Ann also talked about how influential Magdalena has been on other artists during her life and on young artists today with her installations and Abakans.  Magdalena Abakanowiczz: Every Tangle of Thread and Rope continues at Tate Modern until 21 May 2023 and audio described guided tours by members of Tate staff can be booked by either emailing hello@Tate.org.uk or calling 020 7887 8888  More details about the Magdalena Abakanowiczz:  Every Tangle of Thread and Rope at Tate Modern  can be found by visiting the following pages of the Tate website- https://www.tate.org.uk/press/press-releases/magdalena-abakanowicz-every-tangle-of-thread-and-rope Image shows: (Magdalena Abakanowicz Abakan Red 1969 © Fundacja Marty Magdaleny Abakanowicz Kosmowskiej i Jana Kosmowskiego) a large bright red, abstract sculpture, supspended in the air and made of sisal fabric measuring around 4m x 4m x 4m. We now join RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey on a visit to Tate Modern on London's Bankside to explore a new major exhibition of the work of Prague-born Slovak artist and Sculptor Mária Bartuszová with Juliet Bingham the Curator of this new major exhibition of Mária's work.   This new exhibition brings many of Mária Bartuszová's work together for the first time in one place and some that have not been on display in the UK before as well as  some of Mária's work which she used in workshops with visually impaired children in the 1970s and 1980s. Juliet began by telling Toby about Mária's life and work, before explaining about the inspiration for her work which includes the use of natural forms found in nature and the human form, how Mária used plaster in her work in a very tactile way too.   Then Juliet talked about the workshops that Mária ran with visually impaired children, using her sculptures to allow the children to explore their forms and structure through touch and exploration.   Juliet ended by sharing with Toby three examples of Mária's work that are on display in the exhibition that are both her favourites and ones that Juliet would recommend visitors to see that showcases the breadth of Mária's work and how her work is inspiring artist and sculptors today. The Mária Bartuszová exhibition runs at Tate Modern until 16 April 2023 and audio described guided tours by members of Tate staff can be booked by either emailing hello@Tate.org.uk or calling 020 7887 8888 and there is also a guide for visually impaired visitors that can be downloaded from the Tate website too.  More details about the Mária Bártuszova exhibition at Tate modern can be found by visiting the following pages of the Tate website- https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/maria-bartuszova (Image shows: 'Untitled' (1985) © Tate (Joe Humphrys) one of Bartuszová's works resembling different sized broken egg shells stuck together. According to The Oxford Companion to Shakespeare, edited by Stanley Wells and Michael Dobson, the phrase “the Clink” described a specific prison in an area of London called Bankside, where Shakespeare is known to have lived at least from 1597-1596. The prison itself was housed inside what used to be a manor house owned by the Bishop of Winchester. It was the closest prison to the theaters of Bankside, which included The Globe and the Rose theater, among others. This prison was best known for being a prison for debtors. While Shakespeare's works do reference the word “clink” to describe the sound of metal clanging against other metal, there is no direct reference to the prison by name. However, in Cymbeline Act III Scene 3, Guidierius says “A prison for a debtor, that not dares To stride a limit.” While Shakespeare may or may not have been referring to the debtor's prison located right down the road from his theater with this remark in the play, nonetheless, The Clink itself was a notorious house of incarceration during Shakespeare's lifetime. Legendary as an entirely horrible place, the prison gained a reputation for being where prisoners were sent to die. Stories are told of the prisoners being left in their cells to starve to death, or even drown in the rising tide of the Thames that was nearby. This prison's notoriety is the reason why we use the phrase “thrown into the Clink” today to mean that someone has gone to prison. No one knows the full history of The Clink prison and what it was like for Shakespeare better than the curator at The Clink Prison Museum in London, and our guest this week, Alex Lyon.

In this podcast Neil takes us to a place where all our modern senses and sterile sensibilities are thrown into shock. London at the turn of the C17th was a major metropolis, a city teeming with life, where pestilence and poverty sat cheek by jowl with great wealth and riches. A major industrial centre it was ripe with every stink of animal and human imaginable, streets crowded and claustrophobic, some lined with the rotting body parts of dismembered criminals.Striding into this world came William Shakespeare, a man who had the power to entertain the thongs. Conjuring and conceiving magical words and language he became one of the pillars of the English language. His plays and poetry, that have moved and shaped the whole world, were written, read and performed on Bankside at the Globe theatre. To help support this podcast and get exclusive access to New Videos Every Week sign up to Neil Oliver on Patreon.https://www.patreon.com/neiloliverThe series Instagram account is – Neil Oliver Love Letter See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Travel Gluten Free Podcast Episode 78  Fun things to do in London   Fun and Fabulous Things to Do in London   London is such a fabulous place! You’ll find a myriad of extraordinary events, museums, historical places to visit and fun activities to do. Whether you enjoy walks along the river or experiencing the world’s largest Ferris wheel, London will give you the travel adventure of your lifetime. Besides the numerous travel adventures you explore, you’ll find an almost seemingly endless array of gluten-free friendly and dedicated gluten-free restaurants. Check out Episode 77 to find out more about London’s delicious gluten-free fare!   Stonehenge  Built over 1000 years ago, archaeologists and anthropologists are finding out more about Stonehenge through scientific studies. A must-see if you visit London, Stonehenge is a short walk from the interactive museum, where you can purchase a fair-trade sheep hat for 25 pounds!   Salisbury Cathedral Right outside of London, you can visit the home of the Magna Carta from 1216. Salisbury Cathedral, with its flying buttress medieval style architecture, will astound and amaze cathedral goers. Check out the Salisbury Cathedral by visiting Salisbury SP1 2EJ, United Kingdom.   The Shard Modern buildings are usually tall, rectangular edifices towering high into the sky. While The Shard is the latter, the design of this building will blow your mind! Towering up hundreds of feet into the air, The Shard looks like a giant dropped large shards of glass into the ground, to where they stuck, leaving their pointy edges skyward. View The Shard from any location in downtown London or visit at 32 London Bridge St, London SE1 9SG, United Kingdom.   Tate Modern Museum of Art Tate Museum of Modern Art has no admission fee! Visit floors of modern art, sculptures, and multi-media. Wonderful exhibits, along with a beautiful skyline view of London when you travel to the 10th floor of the building. Visit the Tate at Bankside, London SE1 9TG.   Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre See wonderful plays at the Shakespeare Theatre along the waterfront. View Shakespeare Theatre’s show schedule here and find out more about this fascinating theatre by visiting 21 New Globe Walk, London SE1 9DT, United Kingdom.   Borough Market Food, fun, and friends are to be had at the Borough Market, where you can purchase locally sourced produce and other market items. Make sure to check times of the Borough Market and get there early for the best selection. The market is located at 8 Southwark St, London SE1 1TL.   Winchester Palace Walking along an unassuming London side street, you’ll come across the ancient ruins of Winchester Palace nestled in between modern apartments and the street. Visit Winchester Palace at Winchester Palace, Pickfords Wharf, London SE1 9DN, United Kingdom.   Shakespeare Mural at Southwark A brilliant and colorful work of art painted mural on the brick architecture of a historic building in London, this piece is really beautiful. Visit the mural on South Bank in downtown London.   London Bridge Built-in the late 1200s for the locals to move across the river, London Bridge has been burned down to the ground and rebuilt more than once. Walk across the bridge and take the tour inside this architectural accomplishment and monumental symbol of London London SE1 9RA, United Kingdom.   Millennium Bridge A foot traffic bridge for pedestrians only, take a walk across the bridge for spectacular views of London.   Bermondsey District Bermondsey has a fun and funky vibe, with amazing restaurants and wonderful small shops. I found a variety of gluten-free foods in the local shops in Bermondsey. My husband and I stayed in Bermondsey District. For reasonable rates at a great location in downtown London, I would suggest staying in this district.   Hay’s Galleria For a great latte and local shopping, Hay’s Galleria is a teeming outdoor mall with elaborate iron bridging connecting the two sides. Check out this local mall at 1 Battle Bridge Ln, London SE1 2HD.   Tower of London If ever there were one location which represents London, England, and the Queen, the Tower of London would be that place! Purchase a pass and spend time perusing the courtyard where you’ll meet period characters going about their daily life, the Crown Jewels, history of the British coin and history of the tower itself. You’ll even see the modern guards walking across the courtyard. St Katharine's & Wapping, London EC3N 4AB, United Kingdom   All Hallows Church Baptismal place of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, was baptized at this church on October 23rd, 1644.   The British Museum Rooms and rooms of historic artifacts from Egyptian artifacts to historic artifacts of London, there is so much to see! Easily spend half a day perusing the exhibits at this place of history and knowledge. Find current exhibits, traveling exhibits, and location on their website here.   Egyptian Hieroglyphic Tower and Pharaoh Cat Statue This tower is an original piece from Egypt, brought over to London in the 1800s. You can view this stone monolith in Westminster on the embankment next to the walking trail.   Buckingham Palace See the changing of the guard, but get there early if you want an up-close and personal view. If you stand behind the circular driveway, you can see the guard at the street level and still get a great feel for this monumental event, which happens twice daily. Learn more about Buckingham Palace by visiting their website.   St. James Park Next to Buckingham Palace in St. James Park where you can sit, relax and enjoy the small creek and family of ducks. Also a great area for picnic lunches.   Westminster Abbey Home of famous dead people, you’ll have to be invited to be buried in this abbey. A most recent addition to the abbey is Stephen Hawkins, who was buried in the Abbey in May of 2019. Grab an audio and video guide, included in the cost of admission and roam several hundred years of history.    The Albert Memorial Located in Kensington Garden, the Albert Memorial is a beautiful monument. A great place to sit on the steps, admire the beauty of this monument and take a break from a long day of walking!   Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park A beautiful trail runs through the gardens and park where you can visit the monument to the late Princess Diana. Diana Princess of Whales Fountain is a gorgeous stone structure similar to a modern stone river, where children play in the inches deep water flowing through the man-made stream. Diana loved children and I believe she would have loved a monument in which so many children play.   World’s Highest Ferris Wheel Stop by Lambeth in Waterloo along the waterfront walk in London for a ride on the world’s largest Ferris wheel. Creating a product with surplus bread, tackling food waste through positive action and putting the mission for change before profits with David, Head Breadwinner at Toast Ale. We spoke to David from Toast Ale about all things food waste and how to tackle it. We heard how Toast are making their ale using surplus bread – leading the way in a new side of the food industry and demonstrating how a change of view about what we consider unusable food can make a big difference. In focusing on their mission over profits, they hope to spread the word about the food waste issue. Toast give all of their profits to Feedback, the charity started by Toast founder Tristram Stuart, and in doing so are making real steps towards creating systemic change. We also talked about the Toast team and heard how they are creating an ethos that sidesteps traditional hierarchy to give every member an equal voice. Whether they physically helped me build the installation, provided me with a space to express myself, or inspired me, there was a core community based in the Bankside that were instrumental to the success and spirit of the project. In 2011 I spent a month in England to participate in the Merge Festival, an annual festival that encourages and promotes a set of performances, events and happenings which draw on the rich heritage and contemporary culture of Bankside. Today's episode is all about the humor. From satirical to sardonic, silly to sentimental, the Brits kept me on my toes with their mercurial wit and whimsy. The batch of songs that I’m going to play for you today use humor as a storytelling tool. Tracks in this episode: Art terry - Black Bohemian Erin K and Tash - The Horsehead Song Johnny O - Invasion of the Killer Lobsters

How can an 18th Century cartoonist be the inspiration for modern day mixology? Sam Mitchell has found a way and lucky for us we get to sample his artistic creations? James Gillray might not be as well known as his fellow 18thC cartoonist Hogarth, but does William have one of the great Gin Bars in London bearing his name? I think not. Gillray was known as "the father of the political cartoon" for poking fun at the mad King George III and others in his wake. Hogarth and he reigned supreme with their humorous, witty and biting caricatures. Now, as in the 17th C, the spirit known as Mother's Ruin is also reigning supreme in the city of its birth. Sam Mitchell who helms Gillray’s Bar at the London Marriott Hotel County Hall joins us today on the show to explain his take on this craze. He talks, among other things, about how he draws inspiration from the artist's work in creating the exciting menu. It adds to the enjoyment, but is not essential, to come along already versed in Gillray's work. Download the audio Watch Sam rustle up a Regardez-Moi on Mixology in a Minute Here are four of the cartoons which have leant their names to a few of the cocktails on the menu. From top to bottom, left to right the images are: 'Drawing out a new batching of kings’ by James Gillray 'Regardez moi’ by James Gillray, hand-coloured etching and aquatint, 1781 ‘The Jubilee’ by James Gillray, published by  Elizabeth d’Acheryby James Gillray, published by  Elizabeth d’Achery, hand-coloured etching, published 2 August 1782 ‘Uncorking Old Sherry’ by James Gillray WHERE YOU CAN HEAR ME DRINKING NEXT: Next week, and the last before Best Sips takes a summer holiday, are the tag team of bar manager Daniel Thompson & bartender Carlo Lorenzon over at TwoRuba at Hilton London Tower Bridge. Historian Matt Green returns to 5x15 to talk about his time travelling guide to London. Let time traveller Dr Matthew Green be your guide to six extraordinary periods in London's history - the ages of Shakespeare, medieval city life, plague, coffee houses, the reign of Victoria and the Blitz. We'll turn back the clock to the time of Shakespeare and visit a savage bull and bear baiting arena on the Bankside. In medieval London, we'll circle the walls as the city lies barricaded under curfew, while spinning further forward in time we'll inhale the 'holy herb' in an early tobacco house, before peering into an open plague pit. In the 18th century, we'll navigate the streets in style with a ride on a sedan chair, and when we land in Victorian London, we'll take a tour of freak-show booths and meet the Elephant Man. You'll meet pornographers and traitors, actors and apothecaries, the mad, bad and dangerous to know, all desperate to show you the thrilling and vibrant history of the world's liveliest city. 5x15 brings together five outstanding individuals to tell of their lives, passions and inspirations. There are only two rules - no scripts and only 15 minutes each. Argent agreed to provide only 40% of its housing as social housing when it signed the planning agreement in 2006, rather than the London target of 50%. That came to 750 of 2,000. With properties selling for an average of upwards of £1 million each, Argent now wants to back out after it has delivered only 650 of the agreed homes. People have taken to leaving messages on Argent’s Facebook in protest and over 11 thousand have signed on online petition. Here some of the things that protesters are saying.
