Writer and longtime TLS editor Thea Lenarduzzi joins Kate Wolf and Medaya Ocher to speak about her debut book Dandelions, a winner of the Fitzcarraldo Editions Essay Prize. Weaving together memoir, history, and criticism, Dandelions explores the life of Lenarduzzi's grandmother, Dirce, a totemic figure in her family who was born almost a century ago into Mussolini's Italy. Political and economic circumstances, as well as personal tragedy, force Dirce to leave Italy for England, first as a child and later as an adult. Migration becomes one of the central realities of her life, and subsequently the life of her son and then Lenarduzzi herself. But even as the conditions of these moves between countries grow less critical, the difficulties of immigrating remain, complicating and splintering a sense of identity and home, foregrounding difference, and calling belonging into question. Lenarduzzi portrays the gravity of what for so many across the world is still the most dire of decisions, tracing the effect emigrating can have over multiple generations, while also finding inspiration in her family's resiliency and the stories they leave behind. Also, Colin Dickey, author of Under the Eye of Power, returns to recommend Bunk: The Rise of Hoaxes, Humbug, Plagiarists, Phonies, Post-Facts, and Fake News by Kevin Young.

The writer and editor Thea Lenarduzzi talks about her book Dandelions; a family history of migration, cooking, living. So much of personal writing in food focuses on heritage and family - and rightly so! But - down, no doubt to the very white, middle class status quo - there can be a tendency towards simplification - of dishes, or even a narrative, a family's history. What Dandelions does so well is capture how much of people's lives rests in the spaces between, resisting categorisation and definition, and even slipping between fact and fiction, but in a way that remains always true and always significant, even in the so-called mundanity of everyday life. Dandelions is out now, published by Fitzcarraldo Editions. This is the second of three episodes this month about contemporary personal food writing and memoir. The first can be found here. In this episode I have packed up my microphone, left Auckland, New Zealand and headed across to Queensland in Australia to chat with Janice Lenarduzzi, Deputy Principal at MacGregor State School. Janice shares with us the successes and challenges of introducing a coaching culture in a large state school of over 50 staff and 1300 pupils. Starting out with only two coaches Janice invests time and energy in unpacking what coaching is, succeeds in convincing 50% of the staff to take a risk and sign up and then shares with us the impact coaching has on both teaching practice and pupil outcomes. This story is well worth a listen.

Chelsea jumps on the podcast today to talk me through her career in the NRLW. Chelsea has been lucky enough to be part of the Brisbane Broncos NRLW dominance over the last two seasons, back to back premierships. Chelsea gives me an insight into the NRLW and provides a different perspective that you often don't hear when it comes to the Women's game. Chelsea gives a reality check that I personally loved to all the couch coaches who say "Why are they celebrating? They only played 4 games!" Chelsea is a fantastic role model for all young female athletes finding their way. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
