Once upon a time, in ye olden days of strange names and before google maps, seven friends needed to figure out a driving route from their parking lot in San Francisco (SF) down south to their hotel in Los Angeles (LA). The first friend, Alice, tackled the “central bottleneck” of the problem: she figured out that they probably wanted to take the I-5 highway most of the way (the blue 5's in the map above). But it took Alice a little while to figure that out, so in the meantime, the rest of the friends each tried to make some small marginal progress on the route planning. The second friend, The Subproblem Solver, decided to find a route from Monterey to San Louis Obispo (SLO), figuring that SLO is much closer to LA than Monterey is, so a route from Monterey to SLO would be helpful. Alas, once Alice [...] ---Outline:(03:33) The Generalizable Lesson(04:39) Application:The original text contained 1 footnote which was omitted from this narration. Welcome to this special guided meditation where we practice compassion for the people suffering in the LA area due to the LA fires. It's very sad to see what's going on over there, but instead of sitting in sadness, this practice invites us to practice compassion. Compassion is the recognition of suffering and the desire to see that suffering alleviated. With this practice, we practice cultivating compassion and sending it to those affected by the LA firesThis practice is also called the loving kindness practice. PS: Introducing the…

Imagine restoring a 51-mile-long concrete river—running through the heart of the Los Angeles Basin in California—into a vibrant corridor reconnecting fractured communities and ecosystems. In Season 7, Episode 7, host Sarah Thorne and cohost Amanda Tritinger from the US Army Corps of Engineers talk with landscape architects Alex Robinson from University of Southern California (USC) and Leslie Dinkin from the Kounkuey Design Initiative in Los Angeles. They discuss the use of storytelling, augmented reality, and physical modeling tools to engage people along the river in cocreating a new future for themselves and for the river.Leslie recently graduated with dual master's degrees in landscape architecture and heritage conservation from USC, studying under Alex and working with him at the Los Angeles River Integrated Design Lab (LA-RIDL).Alex's work is rooted in his personal experiences with the City of Los Angeles (LA) and its infrastructure, including the LA River, and finding out how people spend their days interacting with these interesting landscapes. Fresh out of graduate school in 2005, Alex worked on the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan, one of the first of many plans for the river that tried to bring different values into the thinking about how to transform the river into something more than just an instrument of flood control. He has continued this focus with the realization that, “We were constrained by so many voices and different constituents, all speaking different languages. I thought, what if we could create a platform where we had a more collective understanding, where people could begin to speak the same language and were able to cocreate something.”This led Alex to reach out to the USACE Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), which has hydrology modeling in its toolset. As Amanda notes, “You can see how this just clearly aligns with Engineering with Nature. At ERDC, we have numerical and physical models, but how do we get our models to talk to people? I think Leslie and Alex have done a really great job in not only creating that connection but making it meaningful.”The product of this collaboration with Duncan Bryant, Research Hydraulic Engineer, and his colleagues at ERDC's Coastal Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL), was the development of a physical model of a section of the LA River with adjacent land owned by the city where there is an opportunity for big changes. As Alex explains, “This is the crown-jewel opportunity for changing the LA River.” To take the engagement with the model to the next level and produce something that invites people to participate in the process, Alex and his colleagues developed an augmented reality component to visually overlay information on top of the physical model. “It lets people interact—a community member can come in and make a comment, draw something, and that becomes input an engineer and a landscape architect can consider in their design process.”Thinking about how advanced visualization tools support community engagement, Alex says, “I think the model and all the different tools we've developed have created this incredible common ground for people to have a conversation and have their ideas and values represented in the system.”Amanda truly appreciates the work that Alex and Leslie are doing: “If I could just represent all of engineers for a minute, I'd like to say, thank you. Thank you for helping us communicate.”For more information and resource links, please visit the EWN Podcast page on the EWN website at https://www.engineeringwithnature.org/ • Amanda Tritinger at LinkedIn• Alexander Robinson at LinkedIn• Leslie Dinkin at LinkedIn

Asshur talks with his group of friend who traveled to Los Angeles (LA), California together. This trip was an epic experience. It was literally a reality TV show. So the guys could not wait to gather again to recap their experiences, just like the wrap up of a good season of a TV show. This episode is filled with lots of humor, and SHADE lol! It also has lots of great tips and ticks. It is a long one but a good one. Hopefully soon we will have the Nico Response, since much of this episode was spent focuses on Nico, who surprisingly became a dissenting character of this trip, lol. Here are some of the restaurant tips offered in this episode: Fixins, Saddle Ranch, Mama Por Dios (Beverly Hills) and The Breakfast Club. Literally all great spots. Also, as mentioned, ensure that you take a trip to the Griffith Observatory. The views here wont disappoint you. But the science is is also mind blowing. If you want to see Asshur's vlogs and get a bit more from this trip head over to AsshurK on Youtube to see more. A booming industry around the United States, the Cannabis industry's worth in this country could be greater than the GDP of 9 US States. In Southern California, Cannabis is even more important and commonly used than the rest of the country with the percent increase of usage in Los Angeles (LA) skyrocketing to 62% from March 2018 to March 2019. From edibles to lotions, Cannabis can be found in many forms making the industry even more interdisciplinary and varied than ever before. With the great usage of this drug and substance that was once considered dangerous, however, comes the need for government regulations, stringent product testing, and other mechanisms to keep consumers safe. The need to make sure products meet a certain standard brings us to Cannalysis, a company based in Los Angeles that focuses on efficiently testing new cannabis products so that they meet state guidelines. As quoted from their website, Cannalysis is “... inventing the best way to test them [Cannabis Products]” by employing robotics for “less error with groundbreaking express sample prep automation” throughout the testing process. Creating a streamlined testing process is key, and Cannalysis is at the forefront. Are you interested in learning more about how this Los Angeles staple goes from the plant to your pocket safely? Join Dr. Yewande Pearse PhD, Social Media Associate at Biotech Connection Los Angeles, as she speaks with Kayleen (Leong) Sabino, Vice President of Operations at Cannalysis. Sabino virtually sat down to discuss the science being Cannalysis' amazing work and what the future of the cannabis industry in LA might look like moving forward. Miracle in the DesertGuest: Greg Bassenian, director of "Miracle in the Desert: The Ride and Fall of the Salton Sea" The Salton Sea is the result of a failed irrigation project in California's Imperial Valley. After a long history of boasting resorts, boating, fishing, and farming, the sea is finally starting to shrink. The future environmental consequences could be deadly. The Invention of Los AngelesGuest: Gary Krist, author of "The Mirage Factory: Illusion, Imagination, and the Invention of Los Angeles"LA was built against all odds—no water and no people in desiccated country. It took innovation, creativity, and a little deception to persuade people to come and make it thrive.

If you love coffee, this is the festival you have to attend! It's the inaugural Los Angeles Coffee Festival, which is organized by the same people that are responsible for the extremely popular Coffee Festivals in London, Milan, Amsterdam and New York. It's everything that you love about coffee in one place, and we tell you if it's worth the price of admission. They also have created the LA Coffee Guide, which lists the top 40 coffee shops in LA (along with info on just about everything related to coffee in town). We chat with Jeffrey Young, the coffee aficionado, founder of the festival and the person who spearheaded the Guide. He tells us how they were able to select the top coffee shops in Los Angeles from so many amazing places. Plus, Myles and Jason talk about how they each had quintessential father/son moments in the same week, all over several cups of coffee! We're over-caffeinated and enjoying several delicious coffee cocktails at the Festival. Join us!

Download MP3 (14:13 8.3MB 初級~中級)*** Script *** W: Hey George, I hear you went to Los Angeles. Weren't you scared? M: Scared? What do you mean? W: You know. Everyone there has a gun! M: Oh, I don't think so. Actually, L.A. was great, Tomoko. I really liked going to the different ethnic areas. For example, the Chinatown, the Vietnamese neighborhoods, and the Mexican and the Brazilian areas. The restaurants and the people were really nice. W: But I heard there are really poor areas. And, have you ever seen the movie Speed -- where the bus is shooting down the streets with a bomb in it, and if they go under 50 miles an hour the bus will blow up?! M: Tomoko, that's only in the movies! I don't think you could ever see a bus shooting down the street with a bomb in it even if you looked and looked to see such a thing! W: So, what was so good about Los Angeles? M: Besides the nice people, one day I went on a tour of Hollywood studios. And we also drove around Beverly Hills -- those houses are incredible. W: Hmm. M: And then there are art museums, such as the J. Paul Getty Art Museum. And sports teams like the LA Dodgers, and the LA Lakers. And last but not least, there's Disneyland! W: Hmm, some of those places sound really good, but I still say you're risking your life to go to such a dangerous place. M: Tomoko, you must watch too much news on TV. It's not as bad as the headlines make it out to be. I think you must have some prejudice toward foreign places. W: Prejudice? Not me! I'm telling the truth! M: Hmm, whatever you say!
