Interview with Nesrin Ismail:Makeup Department Head Nesrin Ismail has spent the last 20 years honing her craft and demonstrating the versatility of her makeup expertise, from full beauty glam to action-driven special effects makeup, across a range of high-profile television shows and films. Nesrin most recently served as the Makeup Department Head of the hit Hulu comedy series "Deli Boys" where the range of her makeup expertise was on full display - from creating vibrant, full glam makeup looks, inspired by '80s Bollywood and Pakistani, Middle East and South Asian cultures, to overseeing extensive sfx blood and prosthetics makeup. Her other recent credits include department heading the Peacock Original series "Mr. Throwback" starring Steph Curry and created by Emmy-nominated Robot Chicken Creators Matthew and Daniel Libman; as well as the drama feature "Love Is_" from NAACP Image Award winner and Emmy-nominated Writer/Director Mara Brock Akil. Originally from Egypt, Nesrin moved to the US to attend makeup and fx school, determined to build a career in film and TV. Early on, she had the opportunity to assist several celebrity makeup artists before she transitioned into the indie film world, where she quickly learned how to handle everything from beauty and full glam makeup, to special effects. Working on independent films required a versatile approach and indie films is where Nesrin sharpened and honed her expertise. Seeking larger-scale opportunities, Nesrin made the leap and moved to Atlanta, where she landed her career-defining break on Season 5 of The Walking Dead. She quickly advanced and was offered the position of Key Makeup Artist for Season 6, then continued her career working on incredible projects such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. She then worked as a special effects makeup artist on Chicago P.D. where she spent four seasons mastering high- intensity, action-driven makeup effects, before becoming a department head in her own right. Ep. 173: Teen Beauty & Bloody Bruises: A Chat With The Makeup Department Head Of ‘Bottoms' - Natalie Johnson

Friends in Beauty Podcast

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Film Makeup Artist, Natalie Johnson, to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Natalie is the makeup department head behind the hit SXSW Selected film Bottoms, which premiered on March 11 at the festival and will have its wide release this summer.   Bottoms follows two queer high school students who start a fight club to convince two popular cheerleaders to hook up with them.   In Bottoms, Natalie had the unique opportunity to combine the makeup skills she's demonstrated in her many years of working on horror films with a more lighthearted, teen dramedy. While drawing inspiration from classic 90s teen movies, such as Never Been Kissed or She's All That, for the teenage beauty looks, Natalie also referenced Fight Club for the film's more gory scenes. The range seen in the film from the bare, beautiful makeup the teenage girls wear to the moments where the characters are covered in blood and bruises is a true testament to the quality of Natalie's work.   One of the key goals Natalie had for this project was to keep the makeup looking as realistic as possible despite the unrealistic nature of the story's world. This meant using bare, natural-looking makeup on the adult actors and adding skin imperfections similar to what teenagers experience. Natalie was also mindful of the realism of injuries, ensuring, for example, that the color of a bruise progressed naturally as time passed in the story.   In this interview Natalie shares: -A snapshot of her career as a MUA and how it lead her to film -Her favorite types of film projects to work on -All about the upcoming movie Bottoms and her process for creating the makeup looks -Her role as a makeup department head -The process for becoming a part of the Local 798 makeup and hair union -How to develop your skills to work in film -And so much more Enjoy this episode! Prior to that, she had only filled in her brows with eyebrow pencil, put on eyeliner, and applied lip balm. While exploring and researching various makeup product lines, and experimenting daily, she discovered a talent for makeup application, despite the fact that she had no formal training at the time. After training at the prestigious Christine Valmy International School of Esthetics and Makeup Artistry in New York City, Marsha began her love affair with make-up artistry working for industry leader, M.A.C. In a very special show this week, we not only bring you all the latest tv news and UK air date information, but we also have a brand new co-host, and an interview with Sarit Klein, the brilliant makeup designer behind the Marvel/Netflix superhero shows! Sarit is a New York based makeup artist who has worked in tv & films such as 'Nurse Jackie', 'Necessary Roughness', 'The Smurfs' and 'Unforgettable'. However, over the last few years, her work has mainly consisted of making the stars of the Marvel/Netflix shows look fabulous (or more likely covered in bruises.) She’s been Makeup Department Head for 'Daredevil', 'Jessica Jones', 'Luke Cage', 'Iron Fist', 'The Defenders', and is currently working on 'Jessica Jones' Season 2. So we talk to her about what it’s like working in the MCU, working with the legendary Sigourney Weaver, and how on earth they manage to keep makeup continuity on a show where most of the characters routinely have the crap kicked out of them!
