Historian and journalist Molly Worthen explores the mysterious and potent force of charisma, and its power to shape American identity, culture, politics, and religion. She explains how storytelling, transcendence, and authority are used by America's most charismatic leaders. Drawing on her new book Spellbound: How Charisma Shaped American History from the Puritans to Donald Trump, Worthen shares how charismatic authority reveals deep human desires for meaning, agency, and transcendence. The conversation explores themes of vulnerability, spiritual hunger, religious disaffiliation, and the evolving nature of belief and belonging in modern society. Worthen unpacks the often-overlooked distinction between charisma and charm or celebrity, examining the role of storytelling in cultivating authority and devotion. She also shares how researching this subject intersected with her own spiritual journey, culminating in her recent conversion to Christianity. Key Moments Molly Worthen discusses her latest book, *Spellbound.* Charisma: a relational, story-driven phenomenon, not mere charm or celebrity Our religious impulse persists despite declining traditional affiliation Worthen's personal spiritual journey: from intellectual agnosticism to Christian faith while writing the book Donald Trump's narrative charisma and religious-political appeal examined in depth Human longing for transcendence and meaning as the root of charismatic power Episode Highlights “Evangelism is just telling people what happened to you.” “The heart of charisma is the leader's ability to tell a story… that does a better job at explaining the chaos and the suffering.” “We want the comfort of knowing that some force larger than us is ultimately in charge—and yet we also seek agency.” “I came to realize I was writing a book that was fundamentally about spiritual hunger—and that I myself had that hunger too.” “Authenticity as a personal style has no necessary relationship with honesty.” “We kid ourselves if we think more sources solve the mystery of charisma—reality is an asymptote we never perfectly reach.” About Molly Worthen Molly Worthen is Associate Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, specializing in North American religion, politics, global Christianity, and the history of ideas. She is a contributing writer for The New York Times and author of several books, including Apostles of Reason and The Man on Whom Nothing Was Lost. Her most recent book is Spellbound: How Charisma Shaped American History from the Puritans to Donald Trump. Show Notes Authority—who should we listen to? Internal battles within American evangelicalism The definition of charisma and its distinction from charm, celebrity, and power Charisma: “ the allure in a leader that gives him or her the power to move a crowd that is premised on a relationship. … you need two parties at least. It's not solely a quality of fluorescence that shines out from the individual without other people to interact with it.” The leader's ability to tell a story that explains the audience's experience of life Paradoxical quality: we want our decision to make a difference in our fate, but we also want some being or force larger than us to make it all okay. “ It's not just about looking at the one who is the special anointed one, but it's that somehow through that person, I too, or we too, see ourselves more clearly.” Special revelation and stories of experiencing God in particular ways “Capturing the ineffable” Role of charismatic leaders in American religious and political life Impact of Joseph Smith, Anne Hutchinson, JFK, and Adlai Stevenson Why institutional religion no longer captures spiritual impulse for many Americans Storytelling as the essence of charismatic authority Evolution of American individualism and the cult of authenticity How mass media, trauma, and cultural crises shape charismatic influence Coming to terms with the limits of your “source base”—”Reality is an asymptote.” “It's that sort of transcendent storytelling ability that is the heart of charisma.” Mormonism and the charisma of Joseph Smith Leaders like JFK and Adlai Stevenson offered different models of modern charisma “So much of my book is really about the fortunes of established institutions in American culture because charismatic figures always define themselves vis-a-vis institutions.” Routinizing charisma (cf. Max Weber) “The gap or the consistency between what our subjects are, are thinking and intending consciously and what they actually do.” Intuition vs analysis—steeping in cultural milieu and operating out of personal life experiences The Puritan heretic, Anne Hutchinson “Very few humans are out and out cynics.” Charismatic figures aren't always attractive or eloquent—they resonate through meaning-making “ The religious impulse is finding a place to land other than organized religion.” Protestant roots of American consciousness tied to authority and self-discovery Humanist psychology and positive thinking “The age of the gurus” Charisma and Contemporary Politics: Donald Trump Trump's story of victimhood, self-made success, and defiance of institutions as a charismatic myth Trump's stream-of-consciousness style perceived as authenticity by many followers. “For example, his rambling stream of consciousness, speaking style that actually is a core, is core to his appeal, I think for many Trump supporters because it comes across as a kind of authenticity—as a willingness to tell it how it is and speak off the top of his head. And authenticity as a personal style has no necessary relationship with honesty in terms of correspondence to, you know, empirically verifiable facts.” The alignment between his narrative and the prosperity gospel ”While Donald Trump is no one's idea of an Orthodox Christian, he grew up in Norman Vincent Peale's Church in New York City, Marble Collegiate Church, hearing the Prosperity Gospel, the gospel of positive thinking.” ”I think Trump has a, has a really acute spiritual instinct for. That picture of reality one in which we can really reshape reality with our minds.” Early support from independent charismatic church networks shaped his rise. Importance of positive thinking theology (e.g., Norman Vincent Peale) in his spiritual instincts. “I suppose I was about two thirds of the way through the rough draft of this book when I was rudely interrupted by the Holy Spirit. I have always studied Christianity as a very sympathetic and, frankly, envious outsider and never was entirely happy with my agnostic fence sitting, but also wasn't actively looking to resolve my metaphysical questions.” “ I've always had this conviction that humans are fundamentally religious creatures and they have this impulse to connect to a transcendent source of meaning to worship.” “I came to realize that I was writing a book that was fundamentally about spiritual hunger and how humans cope with it. But that I myself had had that hunger as well—that I'm not immune to that feature of the human dilemma.” “We want to be pulled into something transcendent, where we are more fully ourselves.” Praying for a mystical experience—at least being “strangely warmed” ”God had already done something to my desires—I was walking in the direction of Jesus already.” “ I always see every kind of historical problem as somehow having to do with contesting visions of human nature.” “There's this silly misconception that Christianity is intellectually stultifying—that to become a orthodox, traditional Christian is to shut off all kinds of questions and accept a black and white way of thinking. And that has not been my experience.” Research project on miracles “ Evangelism is just telling people what happened to you.” Conversion was driven by rigorous academic inquiry into the resurrection and New Testament Experience echoed themes in the book: story, vulnerability, and being seen Her analysis: “God had already done something to my desires before the arguments convinced me.” Post-conversion excitement about theological study, healing, and miracles Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment Magazine and Fuller Seminary.

John Follis is the director of the documentary film Leaving God, but he is probably not as well known as his most famous creation – the legendary Marble Collegiate Church ad campaign. If you were ever on a subway in New York City in the first decade of the 2000s, there is almost no chance you are not familiar with his work. But he created that campaign while in the midst of his own tumultuous spiritual journey, one that would ultimately lead him away from religion and God entirely and toward a new project – looking at the rise of the so-called Nones (those who identify as having no religious affiliation) and the hidden struggle of those, like him, who have awoken to atheism, including former pastors and ministers. Leaving God addresses all of the above, and here Follis speaks to John about his life in and out of religion, that legendary ad campaign, and what compelled him to make a documentary. You can watch John's film here: https://vimeo.com/208442766

Millennials are setting another trend. They've earned a reputation for reshaping industries and institutions — shaking up the workplace, transforming dating culture, and rethinking parenthood. They've also had a dramatic impact on American religious life. Four in ten millennials now say they are religiously unaffiliated, according to the Pew Research Center. In fact, millennials (those between the ages of 23 and 38) are now almost as likely to say they have no religion as they are to identify as Christian. John Follis created an award-winning documentary "Leaving God" (2017) which blends an engaging personal story with the major cultural shift currently happening in America -- the shift away from religion and God. Winner of a Hollywood International Documentary Film award, the film also documents how, before leaving God, John "sold God" via the highly successful and press-worthy ad campaign his New York ad agency created for New York's Marble Collegiate Church. He joined me this week to tell me more. Two years into Walloon Pierre Minuit's administration, the Directors of the Dutch West India Company take that major leap of finally deciding that "yes" this territory was now worthy of more than just a few krankenbezoekers...that in fact this colony of about 300 souls (and counting) was now worthy of its own ordained minister...but in spite of this major development, the challenges of maintaining a start-up colony, halfway across the globe, while simultaneously trying to pillage and rid the Earth of all Spanish and Portuguese, was becoming an increasingly costly endeavor for the Dutch. And by the time that chosen MINISTER finally sets foot on that rickety dock at Pearl Street -- all hell was just about ready to break loose on this wild and still very untamed ISLAND of Manhattan.Episode guests Dr. Wim Klooster of Clark University and Minister Elise Brown of the Marble Collegiate Church of New York.https://marblechurch.org/#ClarkUniversity #WimKlooster #RevEliseBrown#Manhattan #ISLAND #historyiscool #subscribe #sharethelove #geweldig #GrootDesseynhttps://www.audible.com/pd/The-Dutch-Moment-Audiobook/B07YZS621Mhttps://www.amazon.com/Revolutions-Atlantic-World-New-Comparative/dp/1479857173https://www2.clarku.edu/faculty/facultybio.cfm?id=457
Welcome Morons or rather followers of a moron. I do have a real guest for this episode but I want to get to a couple of things first. First of all… this is the first episode since the passing of supreme supreme court justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. Relative to what there is to know about her, I don’t know much, but I do want to share with you two things about her and her passing that I found to be extraordinary, the first being President Trump’s initial reaction and response to her passing. I’ve tried to share this with a couple of non Trump supporters and they immediately told me that not only did they not hear it, but that they had no desire to hear anything about Trump’s comments on someone with the integrity of Ruth Bader Ginsberg. And I’ll bet all of you Libby McLiberson’s out there are all up in arms over Trump’s replacement being confirmed before the election and blah, blah blah… by the way Fox News, Yes Fox News has a story as of this recording and I’ll read you the headline: “Majority of Americans think winner of presidential election should select Supreme Court nominee, poll finds” But now I’m already digressing… If you’re liberal or a democrat or any kind of a non-Trump supporter and have not heard his informal response, you should… and will because you’re about to hear it. It was as he was leaving a rally and it might be a little difficult to hear because in the background and in all of it’s irony, you can mainly hear Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” being played to the crowd that had assembled…. Did you hear that? He almost sounded human! There was a statement of reverence for the work of what has to be one of the greatest Americans and greatest supreme court justices in history. You don’t have to like Trump and you can go on hating him, but if you are not willing to acknowledge that moment of even slight humility, then you are part of the problem. I’ll say this many times from now on, but if you are not willing to sit and listen to someone who disagrees with you… and not tell them they’re wrong or convince them you’re right… if you can’t just sit, set your bullshit and your agenda down for a few minutes and listen… then how can you expect someone else to listen to you? In that regard, you are part of the problem. Which leads me to the second profound and extraordinary aspect of Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s life was that her best pal on the supreme court, was someone on the opposite end of the spectrum politically and opposed to views of the law. A person I found arrogant and pompous and that was Justice Antonin Scolea. But there they were good friends. Ginsberg spoke at his funeral… Why can’t we see some of that… any of that in the legislative branch of our government? And if it does exist, why don’t we see it? If it does exist, for the sake of argument, we don’t see or hear about it because negative news SELLS. It attracts eyeballs and ears and that means more advertising dollars for the bogus news sources from CNN to Fox and that takes us to our guest and more on the Netflix documentary “The Social Dilemma”... God DAMMIT what a brilliant segue! My guest is a professional computer geek and I would go so far as to say he is like a supreme court justice of computers. His name is Paul Congdon… actually Dr. Paul Congdon because he has his doctorate in some form of computerology from one of the esteemed Universities of California where he was also a professor. He worked for Hewlette Packard for many, many years both in the united states and abroad. How do I know someone so intelligent? I went to high school with him of course. I get his take on The Social Dilemma along with a few short clips from the documentary and some other stuff… it’s Commentary from computer nerds about other Computer Nerds on Netflix on… The Modern Moron... CLOSE - Dr. Congdon had a great point that I want to reiterate and that was “The tools Social Media and News Media companies are using to target you can also be used to vet out the story lines of the news you read.” Do you want that? You should. Do you want to know that CNN is tainting their headlines with inflammatory jargon? Do you want to know that Fox is doing the same thing. Or are you fine strapping on the news feedbag and living in the “Willful Ignorance” that we are stuck in? Also, from a regular segment we’re starting called “Trumperceptions”, which is a way to learn to accept this person by understanding a little about this Magnificent Moron and what makes him tick, or have ticks if you wish. This is from Gwenda Blair, Author of the book “The Trumps: Three Generations of Builders and a President”. She is also a lecturer at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. In her book she draws an extremely interesting connection between Donald Trump and author-slash-minister Norman Vincent Peale. Does that name sound familiar? If you’re over 55 it should as he wrote one of the most famous self-help books of all time, before there was even the term self-help books. Remember “The Power of Positive Thinking”? Yeah, he wrote that book in 1952 and he was also a minister for 52 years at The Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan, one of the oldest protestant churches in America dating back to 1628. Guess where the Trump family attended church? That’s right... at the home of the Power of Positive thinking. Trump was married there on his first wedding and both of his parent’s funerals were at that church. Here is Author Gwenda Blair on this subject courtesy of Business Insider magazine… (clip) Knowing this isn’t supposed to make you like Trump, but it should help you understand why he behaves the way he behaves and that should hopefully calm you down a bit over this whole nonsense. If it doesn’t, maybe YOU have some work to do as opposed to everyone else? Finally, the first presidential debate was this week and I had the incredible good fortune to NOT watch it. I will say this, the debate and every presidential debate for the last 20 years could have easily been reigned in by using the correct types of microphones and simply turning them off when either idiot reaches their time limit. There is a clock counting down the seconds they have left and if they go over American can watch them move their mouth and say nothing, which is probably what they were doing for the first two minutes they were trying to speak. So why don’t we do that? So simple, such common sense. So why don’t we do that? Because the news industry wants you to hear Trump tell Grandpa Joe he’s a senile old man. The News Corporations want you to hear Biden tell Trump to shut up. That makes for more eyes and ears for longer periods of time on their Network, their Newspaper, their website or their app… and that means you’re looking at their advertisements just like Dr. Congdon was saying as well as the other industry experts on The Social Dilemma Documentary. It is a dilemma and we really need to educate ourselves. Thank you again to my guest, watch that goddamn documentary, click subscribe, and like and all that b.s. so I can get an advertiser and sell out like everyone else. Geometry and the projection of light have always been key components of Debora Coombs’ artwork. In 2013 she began exploring mathematical projections as a way to understand shifts between dimensions of space. Working from Penrose tiling (a two-dimensional shadowof a five-dimensional lattice), 3D sculptures in glass and paper were built using her classic design skills to explore various aspects of mathematics. A number of high-profile residencies have allowed Coombs to explore these new concepts. In the spring of 2016, she did a month-long collaborative residency with computer scientist Duane Bailey, and in October, a 2-week residency at Assets for Artists: The Studiosat MASS MoCAat the Massachusetts Museum for Contemporary Art, North Adams, Massachusetts. In 2017, a 3-week residency at Carroll College, Helena, Montana, allowed the artist to focus on the theological symbolism of geometry, which resulted in a commission for 85 square feet of hand painted geometric stained glass windows for All Saints, the new chapel on campus. That same year, Coombs spent a month at Jentel Artist Residencyin Banner, Wyoming, making a series of math-based drawings that led to the discovery of a new geometric figure. In February 2018, Coombs was invited by artist Lauren Bon of the Metabolic Studiosin Los Angeles, California, to spend two weeks collaborating and contributing to a landscape project for redirecting LA’s river water for the irrigation of city parks. In April, she presented this and other recent work at the 13th Biennial Gathering for Gardnerin Atlanta, Georgia, an international conference for mathematicians and artists. Then in May 2018, longtime New Yorker staff-writer Lawrence Weschler invited Coombs to speak at the Tamarind Institutein Albuquerque, New Mexico, as part of his Wonder Cabinet, a gathering of artists who work in close association with scientists. Coombs’ award-winning stained glass has been exhibited, commissioned and collected internationally for over 30 years. A Fellow of the British Society of Master Glass Painters, the artist studied stained glass at Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland; University of Wales, Swansea; and received her Master’s degree from the Royal College of Art in London, England, 1985. An experienced educator, Coombs directed the glass department at Chelsea College of Art in London from 1994 to 1996. She has lectured and taught stained glass for professional associations and colleges including Pilchuck Glass School, Stained Glass Association of America, American Glass Guild, and the British Society of Master Glass Painters. Her religious commissions include two 25-foot-tall figurative windows for Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan, 20 stained glass windows for St. Mary’s Cathedral in Portland, Oregon, and 4 windows for St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Nashville, Tennessee. Rare in the stained glass world, Coombs has successfully extended her devotion to content and story-telling to her non-commissioned work. Her piece, “Ornithologist,” from her 2009 Menfolk series, was included in New Glass Review 31, The Corning Museum of Glass publication dedicated to presenting cutting edge works of glass art. Her solo exhibition titled Menfolk, opened at the Jeanetta Cochrane Theater Gallery in London, England, before traveling to the Stained Glass Museum at Ely Cathedral, Cambridgeshire, England, in the spring of 2010. That same year, Coombs completed a collaborative work with artist Michael Oatman as part of his mixed-media installation “All Utopias Fell,” which remains permanently on exhibit at MASS MoCA. In June 2018 Coombs ran a hands-on pilot project for children and community members at the J Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and contributed to a panel discussion chaired by Margaret Wertheim from the Institute For Figuring about the connections between art and mathematics. The focus of this one-day conference was STEM to STEAM; practical ways to bring the A for Art into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs in education. In November 2018, Coombs completed two stained glass windows with geometric themes for Carroll College, Helena, Montana. Work continues on three more windows, scheduled for completion in February 2021. The artist’s sculptures are currently on exhibition at the Schow Science Library in Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts.
Special guest co-host comedian Courtney Fearrington joins Shonali as they celebrate the taping of Ep. 69 with special guests comedian Rufat Agayev, musician Deah Harriott and atmospheric scientist Campbell Watson. Courtney and Shonali start it all out on a serious note discussing Nashville, the bachelor and bachelorette party capital of the country. We put our guest atmospheric scientist & surfer Campbell Watson on the spot and asked him to tell it to us straight. Are we going to die tomorrow? Campbell is from Australia and we can't figure out is he saying algae or alga blooms? We did learn about the good things that humans have done in fighting climate change. Make sure to find Cambpell's artistic and performative work either on stage or online and stop using plastic bags at the grocery. Our second guest is comedian Rufat Agayev, who moved to NYC 8 years ago by way of Florida where he went to college and "trickled down to sociology" as a major. There he started to perform as a rapper opening up for big names such as Wiz Khalifa and Dead Prez. Rufat is part Azerbaijani and part Armenian. Rufat talks about loving comedy as a craft, including his early years in comedy getting his "ass kicked" doing open mics. Go see Rufat's show Hell Fucking Yeah at Lucky 13 Saloon. Our Get It Off Your Chest audience performer is John Uhlenhake. He's a loyal supporter of WDEK. Shonali talks about germaphobes making it germier for the rest of us. John alarms us with what he sees people doing while riding their bikes. Courtney talks walking protocol in NYC. Get it together walkers! Our last guest is a singer, pianist and music teacher Deah Harriott . If that's not enough Deah is also the Minister of Music at Bethany Baptist Church, (Rev. Al Sharpton's church) and Music Director at Marble Collegiate Church. Deah can't get over Shonali's husband's name "Jasper Patch." Shonali goes on and on about Deah's impressive family BUT she's the one who was called a child prodigy at age 2. Deah is proud to come from Lincoln, Nebraska. Who knew? All of our guest members want to go to Deah's church with her. Deah blows us away with her renditions of Time After time by Cyndi Lauper and Still I Rise by Yalonda Adams. Thank you all! See you at our next live show May 28th at Red Room. Make sure you go to Courtney's live show Som Like It Hot Saturday afternoon June 1st at Caveat where he pairs up wines with his favorite comedians.

Yes there were Bible readings in some schools until the Supreme Court put a stop to that, but that is a far cry from Bible studies. Anyway, David Lewicki was Trump's pastor for 5 years at the Marble Collegiate Church, a church that Trump likes to talk about, but the pastor finds Trump's love of Bible study odd considering he never attended a Bible study at the church or even a church service. The House committee that proposed removing God from their oath have backtracked Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee proposed removing “so help you god” from the committee's oath. They have now backtracked because they're afraid that this would be “hurtful and harmful”. The proposal had Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming and daughter of Dick Cheney saying “They really have become the party of Karl Marx. It is incredible, but not surprising, that the Democrats would try to remove God from committee proceedings in one of their first acts in the majority.” Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, which has been identified as a hate group, said “Although the House committee has reversed course, I believe it's important that Speaker Pelosi be put on notice that as Americans, we want and need the presence of God in our government.” Indian nuns getting split up over support of victim who accused bishop of rape We have two separate cases of priestly sexual misconduct that does not involve either children or drug fueled gay orgies. First we have a group of Indian nuns who are getting split up and transferred to other parts of India in retaliation for supporting a fellow nun who accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal of raping her 13 times. The nuns have asked the government for help and the bishop is currently on bail awaiting trial. High ranking priest in charge of disciplining priests resigns over sex abuse Next we have Hermann Geissler the now former chief of staff for the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, the very body that is responsible for punishing priests. He's been accused by a former nun making her kneel in front of him for hours while we would try to get sex out of her, then he would hold her and kiss her until she ran away. When she reported this to a superior, the response was “You know, I knew Father has a certain weakness for women, so we kind of have to put up with this.” In response to the allegation gaining the credibility of his accuser ...
Rev. Hanlin currently serves as an associate minister at Marble Collegiate Church in New York. We dive into a lovely discussion about self-care for pastors and the importance of talking about mental health in the church.
I enjoyed this wonderful conversation as we explored the following profound and often perplexing questions: Why forgive? How does psychology define forgiveness and how do Judaism, Christianity and Islam see forgiveness? Does forgiving mean we are pardoning bad behavior? Do you need the offender to participate if you want to forgive? What steps can we take to forgive and how do we do it? Guests for this episode bring the perspectives of Judaism, Islam and Christianity to the topic. Rabbi Mendel Dubov serves as faculty at the Rabbinical College of America in Morristown, NJ, USA and as Director of Chabad in Sussex County, NJ. Saifulla Chaudahry serves as Propagation Secretary for Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of North Jersey. Pastor Michael Bos, Ph.D. serves as the Senior Minister of Marble Collegiate Church of New York City and is the President of the Collegiate Churches of New York. Dr. Bos established the first interfaith religious diplomacy center on the Arabian Peninsula, and received the U.S. Ambassador’s Award for Community Service. Psychology studies have found that when people forgive it decreases anxiety, depression and obsessive thinking about the offender. Multiple studies have also found that forgiveness improves mood, psychological health and the quality of one’s relationships overall. To read & explore further about forgiveness , may I suggest starting with a search of psychology studies by Robert Enright and Richard Fitzgibbons. How did Trump manage to become president of the United States? There's no simple answer. It involves fear, racism, nationalism, populism, hatred, dirty tricks, manipulation, and more. But the one thing I never suspected was that occult beliefs and practices played a part in Trump's surprising victory. In Gary Lachman's new book, Dark Star Rising: Magick and Power in the Age of Trump, I learned that occult and esoteric thinking permeates the alt-right, Putin's inner circle, and even Trump himself. Before I read Dark Star Rising, I had no idea that Trump was a devoted follower of the New Thought movement, which has it roots in 19th century mysticism. Trump's family attended Marble Collegiate Church in New York, which was ministered by a pro-Christian nationalist named Norman Vincent Peale, who promulgated a doctrine of "positive thinking" -- the idea that you can use your mind to cure yourself of disease, get rich, or even become president ("Change your thoughts and you can change the world"). I also didn't know that the alt-right bases much of its ideology on an Italian philosopher and mystic born in 1889 named Julius Evola, who thought the problem with Mussolini was that he wasn't a big enough fascist. And then there's Aleksandr Dugin, a very influential Russian fascist philosopher who is a kind of Rasputin figure for Putin and who pushes the idea that the only way to return Russia to greatness is by wiping liberal democracy off the face of the earth. Dugin is relatively unknown in the West, except among members of the alt-right and the dark enlightenment, who would love to install the kind of fascist regime Dugin is advocating in their own countries. Dark Star Rising introduced me to all of these phenomena, along with many other related concepts, such as using Pepe memes as a form of chaos magick - a postmodern magical practice that stresses achieving desired outcomes through applied experimentation as opposed to rituals and symbols of traditional mystic practices. Lachman is an erudite scholar of occult history, and he combines his encyclopedic knowledge of esotericism with his ability to clearly explain complex ideas to good use in Dark Star Rising. He wisely avoids ascribing any kind of paranormal efficacy to occult practices, and instead presents what can, and often does, happen when zealous people apply occult-influenced ideologies to the real world.

In this episode, Doug and Dr. Michael Brown discuss: God in 2018 Getting to the meat of the message The interpretation of it all Finding what's right Key Takeaways: If we just try to say "what are the facts", the point of the Bible is missed Too many people dismiss the Bible because "the story doesn't make sense" Can we learn how to treat one another in ways consistent with what we all claim to believe in? If we all were to practice the daily discipline of really loving, the world would be changed "God doesn't change. Our understanding of what that means changes, and our understanding of how we relate to one another as people of faith changes." - Dr. Michael Brown Bio: Ten years Senior Minister, Marble Collegiate Church, NYC - church previously served by Norman Vincent Peale. Guardian Angels are real and we each have one dedicated to us - ALWAYS with us. Lorna Byrne is an international number 1 bestselling author (her last two books have gone straight in at #1 on the UK Sunday Times Chart) with more than a million readers around the world. Her books, Angels in my Hair, Stairways to Heaven, A Message of Hope from the Angels and Love from Heaven have been translated into 30 languages. (Find her books on Amazon at: http://amzn.to/2iqrQ64 ) Lorna has been seeing angels since she was a baby. Very unusually, she sees angels physically with as much clarity as the rest of us see people and she sees them every day. This diminutive, soft-spoken, uneducated Irish woman who did not talk about what she was seeing until seven years ago, says she has no idea why she can see angels when others can't, adding that she is just an ordinary person. She has been featured extensively in worldwide television, radio and print media including CNN, NBC Today, BBC, and many others. Lorna's work has included many sold-out worldwide events. Some of messages Lorna shares with the world are that: Every person has a soul. Every person has a guardian angel. God is real. It doesn't matter what you believe or even if you believe in nothing. There is always hope. Prayer is powerful.
