Keira Knightly and Joe Barton join Edith to discuss Joe's thrilling take on the espionage genre for Netflix, Black Doves. Keira stars (alongside Ben Wishaw's assassin, Sam) as Helen, the wife of a senior politician, who exploits her relationship with her husband to leak state secrets to a mysterious organisation call the Black Doves. As well as some great needle-drops, Black Doves is scored by friend of the show, Martin Phipps
Our latest guest on Soundtracking is composer Martin Phipps. Among Martin's credits are Ridley Scott's Napoleon and four seasons of The Crown. Martin joined The Crown in season three, which follows the life and early reign of Queen Elizabeth, and his music played a hugely important part in the subsequent development of the show.
On this episode, I spoke to composer Martin Phipps about his work on The Crown. Phipps is a 7x Emmy nominee, a 2x Royal Television Society Craft & Design Award winner, a 3x BAFTA Television Craft Award nominee and a 2x Society of Composers and Lyricists Award nominee and an Ivor Novello Award winner for his work on The Honorable Woman.

Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. MARTIN PHIPPS Coming from a musical background (he is Benjamin Britten's godson), Martin read drama at Manchester University and fortunately for the acting profession, he decided to concentrate his energies on writing music. Since scoring his first TV drama, Eureka Street in 2002, he has won 2 BAFTAs, 5 Ivor Novello Awards and received multiple Emmy nominations for writing music to many of the most interesting series of recent years. These include the BBC's War and Peace, Hugo Blick's The Honourable Woman, Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror and season 3 through 6 of the acclaimed Netflix series The Crown. ANTHONY WILLIS Anthony Willis is a BAFTA-nominated composer, known for his evocative scores for Emerald Fennel's Oscar's Winning Promising Young Woman Blumhouse's Ai hit M3gan, and Fennell's latest psychological thriller Saltburn from MGM/Amazon starring Barry Keoghan & Jacob Elordi. He was named one of Variety's Top 10 Artisans to Watch in 2023 at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival. His recent projects also include Dreamworks' Animation's Annie award-winning How To Train Your Dragon: Homecoming, Seasons 6-8 of Epic's video game sensation Fortnite, and Michelle Morgan's comedy It Happened in L.A. As a protege of Oscar-nominated composer John Powell and Henry Jackman, Anthony has also contributed additional music to many of Hollywood's most beloved franchises including: How to Train your Dragon, Jumanji, Wreck it Ralph, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Pirates of the Caribbean and Rio. Originally from London England, Anthony trained as a chorister of St. George's chapel, Windsor Castle, UK before earning a First class honors degree in Music from the University of Bristol and a later graduate degree in Film Scoring from University of Southern California. Recently Martin has scored Sir Ridley Scott's Napoleon, Ed Perkins' The Princess, and Amazon Studios' series Solos starring Morgan Freeman. Other film credits include Woman In Gold (scored with Hans Zimmer), starring Ryan Reynolds and Helen Mirren, Fox Searchlight's The Aftermath, starring Keira Knightley, Alexander Skarsgård, Harry Brown and Brighton Rock.

Plus, his path to film and television music, his work on Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror and The Crown, and establishing trust with the great Ridley Scott. How Martin overcame his early doubts about musical approach for NAPOLEON to meet its spectacular giant sets, and musically signaling Napoleon as an ambitious outsider rising to power.

James Cameron-Wilson assesses Ridley Scott's Napoleon, #1 with a take of £5.2m. Despite being 158m, he felt it cantered too rapidly through 32 years of Napoleon's life, as played by Joaquin Phoenix. However, the battle scenes are amazing, if gory, and he loved Martin Phipps's score. Shame about the longueurs. Disney's new U-certificate animation, Wish, is #3 with only £2.4m but such things are often slow starts and around for a long time. James also discussed true story Nyad, on Netflix, about a retired 60-year-old marathon swimmer who undertakes a crazy challenge. Sadly, despite Annette Bening, he found it uninspiring and unbelievable while the script was more DIRE-log than dialogue. Learn more about your ad choices.

Composer Natalie Holt is one of the busiest composers working today, and she joins us for this fantastic All Access to take us behind her career and projects. Natalie discusses her early career working for composers like Ilan Eshkeri and Martin Phipps, and what she learned from that time being part of a composer's music team. We dive into her process and how she finds the starting point for a project. We also discuss how she approaches television arcs, thematic structure, the importance of music editors, working with directors, and much more! Natalie takes us behind her score to Loki, and what it was like to craft a score for one on Marvel's most iconic characters. She explores how she found the tone and atmosphere of the series, what Loki needed as a character, and what she found both rewarding and challenging. We also touch briefly on her score for Obi-Wan Kenobi, Natalie shares what a dream it was to work with John Williams and have him be part of the limited series. Natalie is an extremely passionate and talented storyteller and it was such a joy to have her take time to explore her career and process. A Film.Music.Media Interview | Produced & Presented by Kaya Savas

Bienvenue sur le podcast Esprit Sérendipité !
Martin Phipps is the featured guest on this Score to Screen podcast. The Crown: Season Three composer reveals how he captured the emotions of each character to allow the audience to lean more into the drama. Listen to Phipps discuss his experience working alongside show creator Peter Morgan and his team of directors. The third season of The Crown sees a new guard sweep into Downing Street, as Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) and her family struggle to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing Britain. From cold-war paranoia, through to the jet-set and the space age – the exuberance of the 1960s and the long hangover of the 1970s – Elizabeth and the Royals must adapt to a new, more liberated, but also more turbulent world. Written by Peter Morgan, The Crown also stars Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Tobias Menzies as The Duke of Edinburgh, Josh O'Connor as Prince Charles, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, Ben Daniels as Lord Snowdon, Jason Watkins as Prime Minister Harold Wilson and Charles Dance as Lord Mountbatten. Coming from a musical background, Martin studied drama at Manchester University. Fortunately for the acting profession, he decided to concentrate his energies on writing music. Since scoring his first TV drama, Eureka Street (2002), he has won 2 BAFTAs and 5 Ivor Novello Awards, and gone on to write music for many of the most interesting series of recent years, including the BBC's War and Peace, Hugo Blick's Black Earth Rising, Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror. Martin's credits include the Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds movie Woman In Gold (scored with Hans Zimmer), Fox Searchlight's The Aftermath, starring Keira Knightley and Alexander Skarsgård, Harry Brown and Brighton Rock. The Score to Screen podcast series is produced and hosted by Crossover Media's Max Horowitz. Listen to The Crown: Season Three Soundtrack here and get the vinyl here. Forresten... Check IT/Round Table: Reviews of Books, Movies, Music, and Other Stuff by the Geek Grls
In this episode of Check It/Round Table Onna discusses the Emma BBC miniseries by Andrew Davies and why the height of Mr. Knightly verses Emma made her upset and led to a Shrek cake. Onna observes how this version of Emma, Emma is shown in her raw naivety but the walking style was not a fit for her status but still seems overall a better fit for Emma as Romola Gerai gives a more honest version of Emma than Gwyneth Paltrow's version of Emma with a veneer of perfection that just doesn't seem as real. Onna considers how Jonny Lee Miller and Romola Gerai get into a bickering fit and how Jonny Lee Miller's character ends up speechless because there really are no words for Emma's behavior and how when Mr. Knightly swings over his grounds and realizes he is there and present in that moment. Onna segues into how this series considers how kids really do add to life in ways that are seriously so stupendous and amazing in how they think and see the world as they are younger and are "a weird adult" as the J Drama, A Story to Read When You First Fall in Love, shows because often when people pass their 20's, they quit being curious, but some of us keep being curious, and that is what makes them awesome Weird Adults. Onna continues on with how there are so many people in this world need a home and it is so often to provide that for some people if you have that opportunity to impact people for the better and to grow yourself in the process and the process of finding balance. Onna considers how having your own kids is not a checklist of duty, but a really cool thing in your life, and a really cool thing in other peoples' lives as you bring the care and love together between you and the family you have. Onna brings these thoughts back to this version of Emma as Emma and Mr. Knightley consider their entire family as they enhance their family as a cohesive whole and avoid chicken thieves in the process. Onna concludes with a shout out to Martin Phipps, the godson of Benjamin Britten, and his amazing talent and his awesome score for this series as well several other Austen works done for the screen by Andrew Davies and what makes Emma irredeemable and why this is why Emma is Onna's least favorite heroine of Jane Austen's novels because instead of legitimizing Miss Bates, she humiliates her. It's all here. It's all real. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/onnabob/support
--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
