Our guest is the Commandant of Midshipman, Col James Mcdonough, USMC. We discuss how the principles of character and resilience influenced the evolution of his leadership style, from Midshipman to Marine Colonel. We go on to talk about the changing landscape of technology in modern warfare, the evolving role of women in leadership positions, and the increasing emphasis on mental health at the Academy and in the military. We conclude with some final words from Col Mcdonough, looking towards the future, and how he envisions what his legacy will be at the Naval Academy.Colonel “J.P.” McDonough is the 89th Commandant of Midshipmen at the US Naval Academy. He is a career artillery officer and has held operational assignments in every level of command including Commander, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. He has numerous deployments under his belt in the War on Terror as commanding officer of artillery units, and embedded training with the Afghan National Army. Besides Staff and Joint tours, he served as a modeling and simulation analyst for multiple simulation programs at the USMC Training and Education Command.Colonel McDonough graduated from the Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering in 1994. Merry Christmas! This episode comes with a festive content warning for fatphobia and suicide, for some reason. It's the 2007 Christmas special, "Voyage of the Damned"! Sorry to spoil our opinions before you've even listened, but this is another bad episode for the bad episode books. The Doctor is on the Space Titanic, and... look, it's bad enough that I had to watch it, and talk about it, and listen to it again while I edited this. Now you want me to describe it again here? I'm fed up!! Here's the episode! Sam | Jordan Cohost | Tumblr | Twitter | Patreon | Discord | YouTube

In this episode, LUF Founder Jason Brezler is joined by LtCol Pete “Salvo” Benning, USMC. Benning was born and raised in New Guinea where his parents were missionaries. After graduating from high school, he moved back to the US where he spent a couple of years as a ski instructor and doing odd jobs. He applied to the US Naval Academy and was initially rejected but was afforded the opportunity to attend the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, RI. Benning would eventually make his way to Annapolis as a Midshipman and was commissioned as a Marine officer upon his Naval Academy graduation in 2004. In the two decades since, Benning has actively led and served in an array of capacities as a combat aviator, an instructor at the Naval Academy, in business development in the private sector, at home as a husband and active father, and in his church and community.
Tonight, we'll read the opening to “Mr. Midshipman Easy,” an 1836 novel by Frederick Marryat, a retired captain in the Royal Navy. The novel is set during the Napoleonic Wars, in which Marryat himself served with distinction. This episode first aired in February of 2021. At fourteen, the naive Jack Easy leaves the luxury of his family estate in England and sails into a world of adventure aboard the sloop of war HMS Harpy. At first, Jack finds it hard to bear the discipline of naval life and is always getting himself into trouble. But soon he is bravely taming a band of mutinous seamen as the Harpy chases Spanish ships on the Mediterranean. This episode is dedicated to our many listeners who have requested Roald Dahl stories. Alas, he is not in the public domain yet for us to read. However, this particular author was listed as a literary influence on Dahl. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Is there a danger of AI taking over podcasting? If it did, would most people even notice? What if AI started interfering in politics? If the dueling “Words of the Year” have anything to say about it, there is an authentic possibility that our rizz may go totally unnoticed. We start with the video making the rounds on the social media webs, where it appears that the Cadets and Midshipman were chanting “F Joe Biden!” at the game. Listen… it should already be obvious, its fake video. But for some reason, there are people who want it to be true and are spreading it as if it were real. Now… what if AI had been used instead of video software? What if it wasn't so easy to determine it is a fake video? What if AI was getting involved in our politics? Would we be able to tell the difference? All of that and more, this week on What The Frock?!
Peter Scott joined the Royal Australian Navy as a seventeen-year-old Midshipman, hopeful but uncertain, and over three decades rose to be the professional head of the Navy's elite: the Submarine Arm. During that journey, he served among the dedicated crews of the most highly specialised capability in any Navy in the most complex and demanding environment on earth: the undersea battlespace. He survived and led others through at-sea fires, floods and explosions, and passed the most demanding military command course in the world, Perisher. Peter commanded the longest deployment ever conducted by an Australian submarine and led the Arm through an unprecedented period of expansion. In all, he served in ten submarines and twenty different command and leadership appointments over thirty-four years. A veteran of multiple Special Operations with the Submarine Arm, he also saw war service in Iraq, the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan during 2006 and 2007.He was awarded a Commendation for Distinguished Service in the Australia Day Honours List 2008, having previously been decorated with the Conspicuous Service Cross for achievements in command of HMAS Collins. Peter holds a Master's degree in Coaching Psychology from the University of Sydney and now works as an executive coach to help leaders develop, perform and succeed. He has recently authored a memoir, published by Fremantle Press, on his naval and submarine service - ‘Running Deep. An Australian Submarine Life.'When not writing or coaching, Peter can be found on the trails running ultra-marathons or relaxing at home with his family.Peter's Top Leadership Tip: is to never add to the fears of your people. Rather, give them the courage to face what threatens them. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Here we are, already discussing the fourth Honorverse anthology entitled The Service of the Sword. This collection of six short stories written by six authors was originally published in April 2003 by Baen. While we'll call them “short” stories, two of them are novella-length (or arguably longer), so if you haven't read this collection yet, be aware that a couple of these stories are lengthy. The book is long, and since we're talking about six stories, this summary is longer than usual too.The first story in this anthology is Promised Land by Jane Lindskold, an author we're already familiar with. This key story within the Honorverse introduces us to the Grayson character trapped on Masada named Judith. Along with several other ladies, she's a part of a separatist group seeking to escape their oppressive culture. As they execute their plan they come into contact with Michael Winton, Crown Prince and Midshipman, on his “Snotty” cruise onboard the HMS Intransigent. The ship is on an official visit to Masada and takes place back when Manticore was weighing the pros and cons to an alliance with either Grayson or Masada. The events in this story helped inform Manticore's decision, especially as Michael, and the crew he's a member of, ultimately come to the aid of Judith and her friends. The story's important because we'll see more of Judith in the future.Your hosts all gave this one a “thumbs-up”.Next came the story With One Stone by Timothy Zahn. We join our favorite heroine Honor Harrington, now a captain in the RMN, and the captain of the Heavy Cruiser HMS Fearless very shortly after the events in On Basilisk Station. The story returns us to her work to address the problem of apparent piracy as ships are being attached in Silesian space. Another old “friend,” Sonja Hemphill is also involved in the effort since it seems some sort of advanced weapon is being used in these attacks. Due to apparent similarities to Hemphill's past project called a “grav lance,” she and the Office of Naval Intelligence are also involved. We watch events unfold that ultimately expose the real power behind the attacks with this new weapon: the People's Republic of Haven. We also get to see a young Rafe Cardones continue his early growth as a Naval officer as he's detailed away from Honor's crew and onto another vessel conducting intelligence operations related to the same problem. This one received three more “thumbs-up” from your hosts! The third story is A Ship Named Francis, written by John Ringo and Victor Mitchell. Our authors took a very different approach to the Honorverse in that it was essentially an outlandish story that brought a bit of comic relief to what has really been what we'll call serious story telling so far. In this short story, we follow the adventures of a medic (Sick Bay Attendant) Sean Tyler and see the adventures onboard the Grayson Space Navy's Heavy Cruiser, Francis Mueller. Nothing is quite right about this crew. Antics and follies occur as we're introduced to a whole host of unbelievable and larger than life characters who do their best to do everything badly. You may or may not be amused, but regardless you'll go on an adventure with this story!Your hosts represented all the possible votes on this one, with a thumbs up, a neutral vote and a thumbs down. (Be sure to let us know what you think after you read it.)The next story was Let's Go to Prague, by John Ringo. This one is a solo effort by Mr. Ringo, who co-authored the previous story. While this one has comedic moments and whit, with some similarities in the writing style and “feel”, this is truly its own story and not just more zany adventures in the spirit of the last one. Here we join two Manticoran...

10-December-1941. While serving as a midshipman aboard the Royal Navy Battlecruiser HMS Repulse, Midshipman Robert Ian Davies MID participated in the first major naval engagement of the Pacific Campaign. We delve into the remarkable story of Midshipman Robert Ian Davies and his role in the sinking of the British battleships HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse during the Second World War. Despite limited firsthand accounts of Davies' actions, his bravery and leadership caught the attention of his superiors, leading to his nomination for higher recognition. We explore the Valour Inquiry and the challenges faced in honouring Davies' gallantry. While the Tribunal ruled against awarding him the Victoria Cross, the testimonies of respected naval officers shed light on his courageous actions. We also reflect on the fate of the sunken ships and the unfortunate illegal salvage activities that have disturbed their resting places. Join us as we uncover the life, service, and legacy of Midshipman Robert Ian Davies, a symbol of sacrifice and resilience during a tumultuous time in history. When was the last time the US Navy made the case for a significantly larger navy to defend its interests on the high seas?Yep, back when Ole Sal was a Midshipman and EagleOne was as close to his service in Vietnam than Sal was to his service in Afghanistan - the 1980s.What lessons can we take from that relatively successful intellectual, political, and personal struggle to grow our Navy?Using his recent article in Naval History Magazine, Lessons from the 600-Ship Navy, as a starting point for our conversation, our guest for the full hour will be Lieutenant Joseph Sims, USN.Lieutenant Sims is a Surface Warfare Officer and 2018 graduate of the US Naval Academy where he majored in history and competed four years on the varsity tennis team. He completed his first division officer tour on USS LASSEN (DDG-82), where he served as the gunnery officer and electronic warfare officer and completed deployment to 5th Fleet with the Truman Strike Group in 2019-2020 as well as deployment to 4th Fleet in 2020. Following completion of the Advanced Division Officer Course and Prospective Engineering Officer Course in Newport, RI, he reported to USS ANTIETAM (CG-54) in August of 2021 as the Main Propulsion Assistant. Yet again Evan is put in a position where he has one thing to do over the summer (in this case learn how to swim for the Navy) and he has refused to do it. Surely this will go well. Also an issue - the Navy is a place of strict hierarchy and rigid conformity to arbitrary rules, which seems like a bad fit for our poet laureate. We he make the cut, or will he wash out like so many forgotten seamen? And of course we have Becky Congo, the Naval napper, the charming Chalmatian. Will she fall for Evan's old tricks or will he have to find some new ones. Like a bad comedy, these storylines all converge at the 1997 (1998?) Tulane Navy Ball, where as usual, chenanigans ensue. Dave is the Republican Candidate for US Congress in PA-05. Dave grew up in Hamburg, NY. He was raised by his mother after his father was killed by a drunk driver before he was born. His mom is the driving force behind his desire to serve and fight for others, as she had fought for him. Coming from a family with a history of service dating to before the American Revolution, Dave wanted to pursue a military career from a young age. He obtained an appointment to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD and began service as a Midshipman in July 2008. Dave graduated four years later ranked 6th in his class of nearly 1,200. He went on to obtain a graduate degree from the University of Cambridge shortly thereafter. At the time he was in college, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were at their fiercest. Dave wanted to put himself at the center of the fight by combating the enemy's weapon of choice - the Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Dave volunteered for one of the toughest Special Operations communities - Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD). After finishing his training, Dave deployed twice, once to the Middle East with EOD Mobile Unit TWO, and once to Somalia with SEAL Team FOUR. He and his Sailors were tasked with reducing explosive threats and other weapons on the battlefield. He remains honored to have led some of the most elite operators in harm's way. Dave met his wife Caroline in Washington, DC in 2015. They fell quickly in love and endured six months of separation while Dave was on his first deployment only two months after meeting. Shortly after coming home they were engaged. They were married in July 2018 and endured a second six month separation just three months later. They both credit Dave's deployments with strengthening their bond, relationship, and appreciation for family. In 2019, Dave left the Navy and began working for the Comcast Corporation in Strategic Development. He and Caroline live in Newtown Square, PA, near Caroline's family and new job at the Episcopal Academy. He remains active in causes throughout Delaware County, particularly those associated with veterans, the military, local businesses, and historic preservation. Dave and Caroline have two dogs, Kevin and Petunia, and plan to raise a family soon. In this episode, we read Chapters 22 to 25 of Mansfield Park. We talk about the friendship between Fanny and Mary, the tension between Mary and Edmund, Henry's plan to make Fanny fall in love with him (and Mary's reaction), William's view of Fanny, the tour de force of Chapter 25 (the Speculation chapter), and Ellen's articulation of why she cares about what happens to Fanny. We discuss Dr and Mrs Grant, then Harriet's partner Michael talks about the navy, with a focus on the process of passing from midshipman to lieutenant. Harriet talks about how adaptations and modernisations treat these chapters.Things we mention: General and character discussion:John Wiltshire [Editor], The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Jane Austen: Mansfield Park (2005)Pam Perkins, “A Subdued Gaiety: The Comedy of Mansfield Park“, Nineteenth-Century Literature, Vol. 48, No. 1 (Jun., 1993).Sheila Kaye-Smith and G.B. The Honor Series - Part 5 - The Fleet Connection - CDR Ledford is the Chair of Leadership, Ethics, and Law. In this episode, he discusses the status of Midshipmen in the naval tradition. There's the importance of the concept of "profession", and a Midshipman's place within that profession. What's the significance of the "Khaki" uniform, and its link to the Brigade Honor Concept and the Professional Naval Officer? Finally, we emphasize that committing to the Honor Concept starts on I-Day.
Shake Down the Numbers: Notre Dame Football Stats and Analytics
In episode 23 of Shake Down the Numbers, hosts Cooper and Eric review the 44-34 win over the Tarheels. The offense looked like it was rounding a corner, while the defense looked like it had no idea Sam Howell could run. (1:40) The Notre Dame offense was efficient rushing and passing, putting together maybe their most complete performance this season. Coan was rushing for touchdowns, Tyler Buchner was throwing touchdowns, and Kyren Williams made the UNC defense look soft. The WR elevated the offense, with Avery Davis and Lorenzo Styles showing their dynamism making big plays on screens. (11:45) The Irish defense clearly missed All-American Kyle Hamilton, lacking the physicality at the second level to challenge UNC in the run game. Sam Howell was particularly efficient, gauging the Irish defense on designed runs and scrambles alike. The DB's struggled to contain Josh Downs, but did contain the other UNC receivers effectively overall. (24:15) Navy preview. The triple option is not fun to watch, and Navy is not very good this year. ND's linebackers are playing hurt amidst significant preseason injuries at the position, and the Midshipman offense will wage war on their knees Saturday. The Irish offense needs to set the tone early and be met with discipline and forced punts or 4th down stops from the Irish defense.

Becoming the Men's Hockey team captain and the leadership lessons it taught him. What it was like to receive the puck from the US Curling team at the NHL Winter Classic held at the Naval Academy in 2018 and why it was such a special event. His experience from serving 5 years as the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy and why it is such an exhausting and rewarding position. He discusses a fundamental change that he made to the Honor Concept. He discusses his new role as the President of the University of Nebraska and how much the school means to the people of Nebraska and the state's economy. One of his scariest moments in a fighter aircraft and the importance of relationships. And so much more!!! What You Will Learn on the Show From Walter "Ted" Carter What Was the Reason He Attended the Naval Academy How He Learned Leadership From Varsity Sports Dropping the Puck at the 2018 NHL Winter Classic The NHL's Reaction to Game and Academy His Long Tenure as the Superintendent Why He Changed the Naval Academy Honor Concept How the Honor Code is Implemented at the University of Nebraska The Selection Process For Him Becoming Nebraska President The Importance of the University of Nebraska on Serving its People The Future of Husker Football Program His Experience at Top Gun and His Decision to Make the Navy his Career The Future of Flight and the Human in the Loop His Craziest Experience in a Fighter Biggest Lesson for Future Leaders Why Relationships Matter His Forrestal Lecture and "Price is Right" experience - Quotes From VADM William "Ted" Carter, President of the University of Nebraska System "Plebe summer was transformative for me, mainly because it was that time when you realize you can't really do anything on your own. It's all being part of a team. But also, you had to deliver yourself." "It (Winter Classic) was a spectacle. It was no kidding a Super Bowl-level event. The capitals ended up winning the game. The gold medal curlers pushed the puck out to center ice on a stone; it landed right in the middle of center ice, and then I got to take the puck off the stone and drop the puck." "I looked at the honor concept as it was written when I took over as superintendent, and I realized that it was a need of something, maybe to be more modernized so it would resonate with the Midshipman of today." "We are such a centerpiece of the entire state of Nebraska. I mean, I talked about, you know, being in the public eye when I was a superintendent, the Naval Academy, this is to that level, and maybe even a little bit more. I mean, Nebraska is an agricultural state. 90% of the entire landmass is farmland or ranches. So that is the number one economic driver of the entire state, but a close second is the University." "We very well could get to a point where we're launching airplanes off of an aircraft carrier, somewhere in the Indian Ocean, or the South Pacific and tankers, and many of the missions that had historically had pilots and naval flight officers in it may not be there." "You got to be ready for your moment. And don't shy from it; take it." "One of the things I've learned is that no matter who you come in contact with, you got to treat everybody fairly with dignity and respect and never underestimate anybody." --Follow Walter "Ted" Carter here: Twitter: https://twitter.com/UofNE_President LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/waltertedcarter/ University of Nebraska: https://nebraska.edu/president NHL Winter Classic: https://www.nhl.com/news/stadium-series-at-navy-marine-corps-memorial-stadium-will-bring-pageantry/c-296376666 --Follow Passion Struck on Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/passion_struck_podcast/ -- Navy veteran, multi-industry CEO, and Author John R.
