‘Twas the Night Before Christmas - The AMSE Version by Audra Edwards 'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Slack Not a message was stirring, not even a business fact; The stockings were hung on the website with care, In hopes that Moni Jefferson soon would be there; The entrepreneurs were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of scalability danced in their heads; And the hubby in his lounge pants, and I in my Mrs. Claus cap, Had just settled our working brains for a long winter's nap, When out on the Remo there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my rolly chair to see what was the matter. Away to the open window I flew like a flash, Tore open the chat function and hoped it wouldn't crash. The filter on the video of the pixelated snow, Gave the illusion of a Christmas party room to participants below, When what to my wondering eyes did appear, But a miniature keyboard and seven teammates, dear, With a beautiful leader so lively and quick, I knew in a moment she must be Monique. More rapid than eagles her team members came, And she whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: "Now, Michelle! now, Kathleen! now Amira and Audra! On, Caroline! on, Team! on, Anna and Selena! To the top of the website! to the top of the socials! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky; So up to the channel the AMSE team flew With the community full of networking opportunities, and Moni too— And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the thread The brainstorming and planning from each entrepreneur's head. As I minimized my window, and started to shut my system down, To the AMSE Bash Moni did come with a bound. She was dressed in festive fun, from her head to her feet, And her clothes were so jubilant, the Grinch's mood she would beat; A bundle of resources she had flung on her back, And she looked like a peddler just opening her pack. Her eyes—how they twinkled! Her messy bun, how merry! Her cheeks were like roses, her lipstick the color of a cherry! Her ears were festooned with the shiniest hoops, And her Air Force Spouse pride was evident to the troops; The end of a pen she held tight in her teeth, And the ideas, they encircled her head like a wreath; She had a thoughtful face and an attitude of Hustle! That drove her to help other milspouse business owners thrive with mind, willpower, and muscle. She was confident and positive, a right jolly founding elf, And I smiled back when I saw her, in spite of myself; A wink of her eye and a twist of her head Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; She spoke all the words, and went straight to her work, And filled all the virtual stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying her finger aside of her nose, And giving a nod, away from the website she rose; She sprang to her keyboard, to her team gave a whistle, And away their fingers flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard her exclaim, ere she moved out of the camera's sight— “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

Moni said this about her spark: “I started my entrepreneur journey as a blogger in 2014 while my husband was deployed, which led to the launch of a successful PR and social media agency called Dog Tags + Heels. I worked with national and celebrity clients to build brand evangelism and social impact. Most notably with Blue Star Families, Heroes at Home.” Latina In Tech: In 2017, I also launched MilCam + MilEmoji Apps, both a Military lifestyle app on IOS + Android. What to consider if you want to be an author Welcome to Episode 2 of Season 3! This week, AMSE founders Flossie Hall and Moni Jefferson talk to seasoned military spouse and author Megan B. Brown as she shares her knowledge and experience about the process of content creation, publishing, and concept development to becoming an author. Here are some other things you'll hear about on the podcast: The difference between a writer and someone who wants to be a writer is 6 hours and 6,000 words. Know what you're going to write about and why: The places that have caused you the most pain The areas that just peeve you off Remember, writing is a lifetime of cross-country running. It's a marathon. Anything you want to write about deserves the time, effort, and nurturing - a very straightforward concept. Anything you want to write about should be a lesson twice learned: it's a lesson you have sat with and learned from, and a lesson that you can teach it to others. Megan says if you don't have an AMSE membership, get one now! The things I'm telling you to do are in the Membership Toolkit. We don't write for ourselves; we write as a gift of love to the reader. The most important thing - understand what your reader needs, not what you want. Try to attend writer's conferences for your own education and exposure. Four things to have on hand at a conference: A well-produced one-sheet A developed concept A polished 30-second elevator pitch A flawless proposal Stay away from absolute truths and blanket statements. Don't write about what's popular; write about what you have authority in. Mentoring is one of the greatest gifts you can give in the military spouse community. Unfortunately, our stories are not in the books, and we need to change the narrative. Megan's new book/bible study is Summoned: Answering a Call to the Impossible. If you're new to Owning Up, make sure and subscribe, so you'll know when a new episode drops. You can also join the Facebook group to see what other milspouse entrepreneurs are up to and receive the latest AMSE news. If you're a milspouse who has a business or is thinking of starting one, make sure to join us here at AMSE Membership. As always, check out other episodes, and we will see you all next week! In November 2019, co-founders Flossie Hall and Moni Jefferson were determined to provide the blueprints that military spouses needed to build a solid business foundation. They relentlessly advocated (and still do) for a place at the table for all military spouses in the entrepreneur discussion. They brought their vision to life with a resilient spirit to support military spouses as they become successful entrepreneurs. Here’s what you’ll hear in this episode: First Impact Report members number versus the numbers now. Who collected, analyzed, and distributed the data for the Impact Report. What is the purpose of the Impact Report? The six-core principles that are important to AMSE. Why AMSE is a virtual organization that meets its members’ needs and the benefits of being a member. The rate of confidence and self-worth members gain while being a part of the AMSE community. All of the ways AMSE elevates and continues to advance the military spouse’s voice. The legislative action AMSE has made happen. The extensive reach of AMSE globally and the number of resources available - including downloads, worksheets, curriculum, masterclasses, and digital events. Why 82% of military spouses rate AMSE as the best source for military spouse entrepreneurs. AMSE maintains over 1 million social media impressions and continues to gain 75 - 150 new members a month without any paid advertisement. Moni and Flossie have been featured in various magazines such as INC, Forbes, and Entrepreneur. In November of 2020, they were featured on the Nasdaq Tower in Times Square twice - including for Global Entrepreneur Day with 3,000 virtual attendees. AMSE created community chapters at military installations because connection is so essential to the mission. They have seven already running, with twenty-five on target for 2021. They recently launched a non-profit called the AMSE Alliance. Partnering with dedicated organizations who share the same devotion to military spouse entrepreneurs, the AMSE Alliance’s mission is to unite individuals, organizations, and businesses. In August 2020, AMSE launched the first-ever Military Spouse Entrepreneur Guide with Stars and Stripes. They distributed 80K copies and currently have 1M+ digital impressions. Seeing the need and success of the MSEG Guide, they recently launched the MSEG 2. And the third season of the Owning Up Podcast is getting ready to launch! New episodes are set to release in May 2021. AMSE will continue to be steadfast in its advancement of military spouse entrepreneurs. We are grateful for those that continue to endorse, collaborate, and invest in our organization and military spouses. We continue to strengthen our organization, creating a framework to be the cornerstone for every military spouse entrepreneur. Breaking Bread with AMSE Welcome to the first-ever Thanksgiving episode! Moni and Flossie wanted this episode to feel like a gathering place for friends and like-minded people, so the AMSE team members joined in! But we wouldn’t be AMSE without you, so pull your chair up to the table and join in on the discussion. What are some of your favorite family traditions & recipes? Rachel Carpenter, Copy Editor, has a super-secret stuffing recipe that she won’t share with anyone, but she will make and share that with you! And when she’s near her mother and family, they get together the night before Thanksgiving and prepare the turkey together. Military life being what it is, she doesn’t always get to be with her family. But she is grateful for technology because it enables her to be a part of the tradition she loves. Selena Conmackie, Ft. Hood Chapter Leader, is from Hawaii, and for her, pumpkin crunch (also called pumpkin dump cake) is her must-have Thanksgiving tradition. But the funny part about this tradition is every year she asks her friend for the recipe. Just asking her friend for the recipe has become a part of the tradition around the yummy dessert! Here is the recipe if you would like to try it: Pumpkin Crunch Recipe. Kat Calvo, Partnerships Manager, is all about the pumpkin crunch, too! And traditionally, her family also makes it. Around noon, she usually starts drinking Coquito. Plus, she wraps and stuffs her turkey with bacon. That’s right, bacon. She said it’s her husband’s favorite way to eat it: Bacon-Wrapped Turkey. Adam Evans, Luke AFB Chapter Leader, always hosts a Friendsgiving at their house the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. They have a game they play called Play it Forward. The day of, they all arise very early to begin the game. The game requires a deck of cards, with each card having a specific task: take a selfie with a stranger, complete this riddle, overtip your server, and so on. The tasks are straightforward, and part of the idea is to go to every local business throughout the city. Once the task is completed, the player logs in their deck of cards with the number on the bottom of the deck into an app to keep track of the card. Next, the player leaves the card they have completed with that person they met, and that person can enter the card’s number into the game. They’ve been playing this game for the past six years. Some of the cards have traveled 1.2 million miles! Here is the game: Sneaky Cards Game. Christinna Kitchaiya, Social Media Strategist, says that she used to be traditional in her meal. But her husband is from Thailand, and now that they have traveled the world, their dinner consists of all sorts of flavors from around the globe! Plus, they like to invite people who don’t have a family to share the holiday with their home. Moni Jefferson, Co-founder, and CEO used to have a very traditional meal and still does, but now she likes to order out. However, she does make traditional Puerto Rican rice called Arroz con Gandules (rice with pigeon peas). Her family used to get dressed up for Thanksgiving, but now they wear Christmas PJs all day and watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Anna Larson, Ft. Hood Chapter Leader, has a huge extended family. We’re talking sixty 1st cousins, and they always got together for Thanksgiving. Her uncle was a gym teacher at a high school. When she was younger, the entire family would meet at the gym and use the commercial kitchen to prepare the meal. And for some reason, because she’s not sure how or why it started, there would be homemade pinatas for the children and the teens. The ones for the teens were always harder to get open. But by the end of the day, there would be piles of candy everywhere! The pinata tradition has stayed with her. Flossie Hall, Co-founder, and COO grew up in a very small town with very traditional foods. It wasn’t until she became a military spouse and was introduced to all the diversity within the Thanksgiving holiday that she realized all the good food she could add to her meal! She still serves traditional dishes but enjoys other dishes as well. As the neighborhood cook, she enjoys inviting others over, especially soldiers with no one to share the holiday with, to share with her family of 6 for the holiday. Caroline Schafer, the podcast editor, grew up with the regular traditional foods and loves to make and serve them. But having a son with Celiac’s disease means she has learned to tweak as many recipes as she can. Plus, even though it’s not Christmas, she likes to eat on her Spode Christmas china because it reminds her of her Mimi, who is no longer with her, and Spode was the china she used for the holidays. Each team member took some time to answer some This or That questions. We’d love to hear what you have to say! Sweet potatoes and yams - which is your favorite? Or are you like the AMSE team, and you aren’t sure of the difference? Canned cranberry or fresh cranberry sauce? Stuffing or dressing? Fun fact (because we found out some of the team didn’t know this): stuffing is what you stuff a turkey with, and dressing is served in a dish on the side. Cook or take-out? Everyone cooks. Mostly. Paper plates or China? Pecan or pumpkin pie? Of course, a Thanksgiving podcast wouldn’t be the same if each of us didn’t share what we’re grateful for this year. Even with all that 2020 has brought us, each of us shares our unique and heartfelt gratitude. Of course, one of those things we are all grateful for is you! Happy Birthday, AMSE! Welcome to this special episode where we celebrate the first anniversary of AMSE! Co-founders Flossie Hall and Moni Jefferson share what has happened in just one year, from ideation to the platform that AMSE is now. Plus, since it is a birthday celebration, they have some surprises to share that are gifts to all of you! AMSE was born because, as military spouse entrepreneurs, Moni and Flossie experienced a lack of support and guidance. They noticed that other military spouse entrepreneurs dealt with the same kind of frustration within the military community. Thus, they made the joint decision to create an organization where military spouse entrepreneurs could go for support, regardless of the stage of their business. They created a social impact agency of entrepreneurs leading entrepreneurs. Here are some other things you’ll hear on the podcast: There are now 1,400 members of AMSE and we are still growing! AMSE partners with other grassroots organizations built by and run by military spouses. Grassroots are so influential. You can’t be at the top and not know the needs of those at the bottom. We listen to the needs of the members through surveys and by talking to them. How to feel confident where you are so you can PCS your business. Transparency is essential, and coming soon will be the numbers from AMSE’s impact report. Because AMSE spends money on what’s necessary, such as lean technology, paying military spouses to build an educational curriculum, and paying military spouses to serve as team members creates an economic impact within the military spouse entrepreneur community. AMSE’s website has 28,000 curriculum downloads. Members have access to 65 worksheets, 38 LIVE Masterclasses, one-on-one mentors, and Slack channels with peer to peer connection. MSEG Guide with Stars and Stripes was a massive win for AMSE, and the next guide is already in development. The success isn’t just for AMSE, though. It’s also for the partners, the spouses that believe in AMSE and need AMSE. USAA and Amazon Military have been the most prominent supporters from the beginning of AMSE. Now time for the surprises! The first surprise is that AMSE, WiseAdvise, and InstantTeamz have created the AMSE Alliance, which will advocate for change, draw awareness to barriers, and create opportunities for military spouse business owners. The next surprise is the Remote Revolution coming January 27-28, 2021. This 100% virtual platform will include three pillars: freelancing and remote work opportunities, entrepreneurship, and living well. There will be breakout workshops, networking, one-on-one sessions, and more! Participants will walk away with confidence, knowledge, and connection. The third announcement is that the AMSE membership dashboard is getting a complete glow-up to include a Milspouse Market Place, a place for you to showcase your business, products, or service. Plus, it will consist of a Member Directory with a personal networking profile that allows you to find other military spouses to collaborate with, hire, look for a job, and more! If you’re new to Owning Up, make sure and subscribe, so you’ll know when a new episode drops. Don't Deny Your Natural Gifts Welcome to Episode 8 of Season 2 of Owning Up! This week, AMSE founders Moni Jefferson and Flossie Hall discuss why your gifts and talents are the keys to unlocking your business idea. Moni shares how her gift of gab and leadership as a child pointed her in the direction of what kind of business she should have as an adult. Even though those gifts were not necessarily popular for everyone else, she realized that she naturally connects with people, is relatable, and is an encourager. Flossie, called Bossy Flossie as a kid, was always the leader and had bossy traits. Plus, she could always see the angles in every situation, which was great for her because she could make any situation work to her advantage. She recognized that her analytical mind, work ethic, and natural leadership gifts would help her as an entrepreneur and give her freedom that she wouldn’t necessarily find if she worked for someone else. And being an entrepreneur allowed her to find and develop skills and traits she didn’t even know she had. You’ll also hear Moni and Flossie talk about AMSE member Brittany Rhodes. Listening to her mother, who pointed out Brittany’s natural ability in math, Brittany turned her natural gift into a business geared initially towards females and now also available for males. Her subscription box and services are open for those who need help understanding and sharpening their math skills. Brittany’s story can be found in the MSEG Guide. Here are some other things you’ll hear about on the podcast: You know yourself better than anyone; use those natural gifts to find something you’re good at, even if it’s not popular. Believe in yourself, and start taking steps to make your passion more than a hobby. What do people tell you you’re good at? Maybe set up a focus group and ask others what they see are natural traits for you. Make sure there’s a need for your business and that you can create revenue with it. Be prepared to pivot and open to adjusting what you need to create income. Know that success will not look the same for everyone. Take the time to figure out what success looks like to you? Don’t be afraid to try different things to find what works best for you. The MSEG Guide is available digitally, and you can request to have one mailed to you if you cannot locate one at a military base near you. If you’re new to Owning Up, make sure and subscribe, so you’ll know when a new episode drops. Pivot for Success Welcome to Episode 7 of Season 2 of Owning Up! This week, AMSE founders Flossie Hall and Moni Jefferson share how, when, and why to pivot as an entrepreneur. If 2020 has taught us anything, prepare for the unexpected. As entrepreneurs, Moni and Flossie are well aware of the multiple different ways to pivot. As AMSE gets ready to celebrate its first anniversary, the ladies talk about how they continually adjust to changes as the company grows. This aligns with their mission and vision: to support military spouse entrepreneurs need to launch and grow their business. While the entrepreneur’s journey is filled with excitement, there are also times of exhaustion. Founder’s fatigue is a real issue within the entrepreneurial community. But knowing how and when to pivot can provide the relief you need for yourself and your business. Pivoting often allows you to reassess your business areas that either need to be scaled back or expanded. Pivoting doesn’t mean failure and don’t be afraid to change something you didn’t plan on changing. It’s okay to admit something didn’t work out or to add something you didn’t realize you would need. Entrepreneurship looks different for everyone. You’ll also hear Moni and Flossie talk about AMSE member and Gold Star Spouse Allison Banholzer’s ability to persevere and pivot three times. She paid attention to the pulse of her business and listened to her customers. Allison’s story about her life and her company, Wear Your Spirit, can be found in the MSEG Guide. Here are some other things you’ll hear about on the podcast: Accept that your business plan is going to evolve and change as you continue to grow. Give yourself grace. If you need to scale back, that’s okay. Access your margins and see where you need to make changes. Find out if there’s a way for your business to create passive income. Be careful of getting caught up in too many ideas at once. Stay focused and then scale in phases. Don’t forget about your core values and why you do what you do. That will keep your foundation stable as you pivot. The MSEG Guide is available digitally, and you can request to have one mailed to you if you cannot locate one at a military base near you. If you’re new to Owning Up, make sure and subscribe so you’ll know when a new episode drops. Building Your Business From The Ground Up Welcome to Episode 6 of Season 2 of Owning Up! This week, AMSE founders Moni Jefferson and Flossie Hall discuss building your business from the ground up. Do you have what you need to stay on track, especially when you have multiple deadlines and schedules within your business and household? In these times of #covidchaos, Moni and Flossie have made resources accessible to build your business from the ground up. When you first launch your company or start your business, you may find things you thought you needed to do that you now realize you don’t and vice versa. There may have been things you didn't even know you needed. One of those essential items to consider is building a community to support you and your business. This is an often overlooked and undervalued aspect of being an entrepreneur. It is also vital to create a forecast with a business model that helps your business succeed and gives you a strategy to create a successful business. You’ll also hear Moni and Flossie talk about AMSE member Monica Fullerton as she shares why she started her business, Spouse-ly, less than a year ago, and what she’s done to pivot and grow her business. Here are some other things you’ll hear about on the podcast: Launching a business is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed at first. Start small as you first launch and improve as you go. Just because you are doing something when you launch doesn’t mean you have to keep doing it. If it’s an aspect of your business that you don’t enjoy and doesn’t fit, it’s okay to stop doing it. The business is yours. Be ready to pivot when you need to. Be mindful of how fast you’re growing. If you grow too quickly, you won’t be able to meet the demands of your customers. You don’t want to drown and possibly outgrow your business. The MSEG Guide provides tangible and actionable tools for military spouse entrepreneurs. You don’t have to do this alone! AMSE provides a Business Model Canvas to take you step-by-step through the process of becoming an entrepreneur, from ideation to the launch process. Stay open-minded and know your strengths and your weaknesses. Don’t be afraid to start. Get your core things in place, and then take the leap! The Power of Remote Work for Military Spouses Welcome to Episode 5 of Season 2 of Owning Up! This week, AMSE founders Moni Jefferson and Flossie Hall talk about why working remotely is efficient and effective for the military spouse's life. About five years ago, the thought of working remotely was incredibly unpopular. However, with the evolution of the military spouse entrepreneur, it is not only popular but necessary and powerful. For Flossie and Moni, working remotely provides the opportunity for them to work smarter, not harder. Even though, AMSE if for entrepreneurs, Moni and Flossie explain why there are benefits to working for another company. Often times, this allows you the opportunity to build the skills you need to start your own business. Plus, you will gain valuable experience in time organization, productivity, and teamwork. You may also have the chance to learn programs and gain proficiency in areas you didn’t even know were possible. This allows you to build a solid foundation and do the work from the ground up when you decide to finally step into the world of entrepreneurship. You’ll also hear Moni and Flossie talk about AMSE member Laura Early, Deputy Director of Wise Advise and Assist Team. Featured in the MSEG Guide, Laura talks about how and why she and her business partner, Diana Jaquith, started their business. In 2008 when Eloise set out to start a business, Wise Advise and Assist Team. Built it with her partner, Diana, created a company with a mission that supports all of what it means to be a military spouse. In Laura’s words, “Military spouses deserve to have the life, family, and career they’ve always dreamed of.” Here are some other things you’ll hear about on the podcast: The juggle of all things is real right now and definitely has extra challenges. Remember to do mental health checks with your friends during this time. AMSE is all virtual and understands that remote work is how some entrepreneurs can take their business from duty station to duty station without worrying about what will happen to their business. AMSE offers Building Your Business the AMSE Way, Masterclasses, and updated resources will help you regardless of what stage of your business you’re in. It’s important to never stop learning! Season 2 Episode 4: Doing Business the AMSE Way Welcome to Episode 4 of Season 2 of Owning Up! This week, AMSE founders Moni Jefferson and Flossie Hall share why starting AMSE was vital to them. They had a strong desire to create an organization where military spouses could find step-by-step resources and support their entrepreneurial lives. They understand the uniqueness of the military spouse lifestyle. And when they each started their entrepreneur journey, they found there was a tremendous lack of guidance. There was nothing to help an active-duty spouse start, sustain, and scale their business. There are plenty of resources for veterans, but not military spouses. And often, organizations didn’t know how even to help a military spouse. Plus, they realized how important it is to advocate for the military spouse entrepreneur in a world that doesn’t know or experience being a military spouse. You’ll also hear Moni and Flossie talk about AMSE member Eloise Drain, featured in the MSEG Guide. In 2008 when Eloise set out to start a business, Family Inceptions, to assist families having fertility issues, she also experienced a lack of guidance when starting her business. In the past year, Eloise found the resources and community of support she needs within AMSE. Here are some other things you’ll hear about on the podcast: AMSE members get access to digital downloads and replays of masterclasses, partners, and special discounts for military spouses to help navigate and grow your business. AMSE members receive access to high touch master classes and co-working spaces. Hyper focused information for military spouse entrepreneurs. Monthly Group coaching where Moni and Flossie answer questions, giving you a deeper dive into being a business owner. Access to a Slack community with different threads to support the group. All members are on the channel. This is the time to be a freelancer and a remote worker. AMSE resources and curriculum are customized specifically for the military spouse community. Season 2 Episode 3: Adam Evans Welcome to Episode 3 of Season 2 of Owning Up! This week, AMSE founders Moni Jefferson and Flossie Hall share how to keep the naysayers at bay and why it’s important who you talk to about your dream to be an entrepreneur. Whether you’re a new entrepreneur or someone who’s been rocking your best entrepreneur life, you may have had to deal with those who don’t support the direction you’re going. No worries, though, Moni and Flossie have been there, dealt with that. In this episode, they talk about where validation comes from, plus how to know who to trust with your dream, and what you need to consider when sharing your ideas with other people to protect yourself legally. Plus, you’ll hear their excitement about Adam Evans, this week’s entrepreneur trailblazer. Here are some other things you’ll hear on the podcast: Always read through contracts. You are your most prominent advocate. You won’t always have someone there to be your cheerleader. Find what affirmations you need for yourself when you’re stuck in a rut. As a military spouse entrepreneur, if you don’t have thick skin already, you’ll need to develop it. Find mentors and advisors you can trust. It’s okay to set boundaries with naysayers or those that don’t understand that you don’t have to have a 9 - 5. It’s your dream, your passion, not theirs. Check yourself - don’t be a naysayer or a discourager to others. Adam Evans is no stranger to being an entrepreneur, but his love for his current venture - Instant Hands, is full of all the things that are important to him. His “why” isn’t about money; it’s about community. Welcome to Episode 2 of Season 2 of Owning Up! This week, AMSE founders Moni Jefferson and Flossie Hall discuss the entrepreneur’s highs and lows. Plus, we’ll hear from entrepreneur Chavah Grant how she realized her gifts and turned them into her own successful business - Vida Chic Weddings. One of the struggles entrepreneurs face is not wanting to talk about the real-life struggles they have gone through. Moni and Flossie believe it’s essential to be transparent; just consider where and how you do this. It’s okay to admit you’re struggling or you’ve messed up. Don’t be afraid to talk about it. It’s okay to be transparent. You are 100% human. Entrepreneurship can be a lonely place, and when you keep it real, you know you’re not the only one going through something. Everyone screws up; it’s just how you choose to deal with it. Once you own up, you can move forward and not let it keep you down. For the past six years, Flossie and Moni have learned all the things they needed to know to run a business. They’ve asked for help, they’ve learned what is required to do, and they’ve failed from time to time. You can’t be afraid to fail if you want to be a successful entrepreneur. Here are some other things you’ll hear on the podcast: Don’t air your highs and lows on social media or your website. Social media is not real life. It doesn’t genuinely capture what’s going on, only snippets. People will have a preconceived perception of you. It’s okay, to be honest and be yourself. When Flossie is dealing with a difficult moment, she sleeps. Her brain makes her rest and recover. When Moni is having a low, she cries and prays. She’s an emotional processor. She reminds herself of her “why” she’s doing what she does in her business. You’re so many things to so many people. You’re building a business that’s going to mean so much to people. Chavah Grant’s story of how she went from being a custodian at a theme park to working in the corporate events department was just what she needed to find out she was born to be a wedding and event planner. Chavah shares a note of encouragement, “When running your own business, there are extreme highs and extreme lows. The harder the low, the more momentum you have to keep going next time. Just get through it. Once you get through it, you’ll be good.” Visit Chavah’s website here: https://www.vidachicweddingsandevents.com/. Season 2 Episode 1: MSEG Military Spouse Entrepreneur Guide with Stars and Stripes Welcome to a brand new season of Owning Up! This week, AMSE founders Moni Jefferson and Flossie Hall start this season with a story of monumental proportions. Thanks to the support of the well-known and trusted publication, Stars and Stripes, history is made with the production and distribution of the first-ever Military Spouse Entrepreneur Guide. In this episode, Moni and Flossie share how a vision, from years ago, has finally been brought to life! After months of labor and love, they share the lengths they went to and the support they had from the team of creative writers, photographers, and editors that helped to make this dream become a reality. Plus, they express their deepest gratitude for Corey Henderson, Multimedia Consultant with Stars and Stripes, for being such a supportive aspect of this endeavor. Moni and Flossie are no strangers to the struggle military spouse entrepreneurs have faced when it comes to locating information on military bases for those spouses interested in starting their businesses. Both ladies touch on their efforts to find support when they fell into their entrepreneurship; and how they leaned on their resilience and courage to push past the nay-sayers to live out their passion and dreams. This guide was created for other military spouses to know they have a community here to support them, encourage them, and give them the courage to become a military spouse entrepreneur. The guide not only provides a step-by-step resource about how to start your own business but a Milspouse Business Directory, which features over 500 spouses who share their talents and skills. Here are some other things you’ll hear them discuss: AMSE created this guide because we want to be where military spouses can go for resources about how to begin a business and layer it with our community. After all, you can’t do any of this alone. As of right now, there have been 100,000 printed copies distributed on bases globally, plus digitally. The guide from front to back is all military writers and photographers. Plus, it is broken down into multiple topics and references. The guide is currently on military bases around the globe, plus USO Pathfinder locations. We are celebrating AMSE for surpassing 1000 members! Make sure and pick up your copy of the Military Spouse Entrepreneur Guide at a military base near you or check it out online: https://www.stripes.com/special-publications/military-spouse-entrepreneur-guide?fbclid=IwAR3U9pZlmUL-CjU8tvWKiGlWtzfwRq6N-9XkKtas5XbzqOwtUmg9J6Lx9vA If you’re new to Owning Up, make sure and subscribe, so you’ll know when a new episode drops. In this M-Powered episode, I talk with Elizabeth Marion, a Marine Corps spouse and the Virtual Events Producer and LMS Manager at Bunker Labs. Before marrying her Marine, Elizabeth worked in the film industry, and after entering into military spouse life and becoming interested in entrepreneurship, her journey led her to Bunker Labs. Elizabeth was so impressed with Bunker Labs' commitment to helping the military connected community start and grow their own business, that she signed on to be a city leader and eventually became a part of the Bunker Labs team. Listen in to learn more about Elizabeth and Bunker Labs!
Any service member worth their salt will tell you that being in the military is hard, but being married to it is even harder. Between long deployments and frequent moves and the inability to plan out more than a few weeks with any reasonable assurance that you'll be able to achieve those plans without the military throwing you a curve ball, being a military spouse ain't easy! So what happens when a military spouse wants to be an entrepreneur? Who's got their back? Rest easy...the Association of Military Spouses, headed by military spouses Flossie Hall (https://www.instagram.com/flossie_hall/) and Moni Jefferson (https://www.instagram.com/monijefferson/), is there to do exactly that! Before the pandemic, this group struggled through unemployment rates in excess of 24%, and upwards of 50% experienced a period of unemployment in any given year. While 88% have post-secondary education, many are ‘under-employed' serving in positions not normally filled by similarly qualified individuals. Thus is the plight of our Military Spouses. Moves, deployments, a nation on a war footing - they also serve who stand and wait. We invited Flossie Hall, a military spouse, entrepreneur, and social media guru, to step into the VeteranCrowd Spotlight in this episode. In July 2019 Flossie and her Co-Founder, Moni Jefferson, founded AMSE (The Association of Military Spouse Entrepreneurs), a company that seeks to connect military spouses and elevate their entrepreneurship to new heights. AMSE is a global virtual military spouse entrepreneur membership organization with access to education, resource programs and high touch masterclasses to help them start, launch and grow their businesses. Flossie Hall sought to become a doctor while attending college at the University of Michigan, but her path changed after she met her Navy husband. She realized that her priorities were changing for her family, and instead of attending medical school, she started the Healthy Mama Facebook business page. Within the year the page was driving seven figures in revenue, and Flossie Hall discovered her new passion. Today, AMSE is a centralized database of thousands of military spouse creatives, photographers, freelancers, and advocates. AMSE also creates brand tailored campaigns, allows military spouses to attend exclusive events, and builds lasting relationships for brands. AMSE has already been featured at NY Fashion Week, in Yahoo Finance, Military Families Magazine and Military Spouse Magazine just to name a few. We placed Flossie in the Spotlight to discuss her adaptation to being a military spouse, her leadership role in the military spouse community, and her dedication to connecting military spouses in business. This week on Owning Up, our host Jamie Muskopf talks with AMSE co-founder and CEO of Dog Tags and Heels Moni Jefferson about her not-so-smooth transition from stay at home mom to business owner, how she handled communication challenges with her spouse, and how she found her flow in the military spouse community. Flossie Hall built a multi-million dollar company. Moni Jefferson built and runs her own massively successful company. Each of those achievements is noteworthy but what makes these even more so is that both women created their success while married to active duty members of the military.Having navigated the gauntlet of deployments, regular moves, and all the other uncertainty and challenges attached to life in the military, Flossie and Moni know firsthand how difficult it is to maintain a career in that life, let alone build massive success. So when the two of them connected, it became their combined mission to help other military spouses avail themselves of all the opportunities available in the country they and their families give so much to serve.Together, the two powerhouses created and launched The Association of Military Spouse Entrepreneurs (AMSE) and on this episode of American Snippets they share their insight on achieving the American Dream while helping others do the same.Read our featured article with Flossie Hall and Moni JeffersonWatch this Interview on YouTubeFollow us on Instagram:@americansnippets@barballenspeaks@davebrownliveiTunes Not Your Thing?
