Endlich Urlaub!
//Annonse.

Dr. Tim Murray smashes imperial stereotypes of Asia through tastes and trades, in a 19th century Standard Willow Ceramic Plate from Josiah Spode's Staffordshire pottery. Adorning dinner tables across the world, Josiah Spode's Chinese-inspired ‘Standard Willow' rapidly became the world's most popular ceramic pattern. Produced in Staffordshire from 1790, its blue-and-white pines and pagodas speak to Asia's ascendant economic and cultural status - and imperial European efforts to imitate and overtake China in the 19th century. Excavated from former settler societies as far as Australia, such tea sets are testament to the mutual expansion of the British Empire and the global ceramics market, connecting colonial territories with cultural tastes through new trading tactics, and aggressively advertised chinoiserie. Digging into the rise of mass-produced pottery unearths how European potteries came to provide the global standard and entry-point for England's rapidly expanding consumer classes, subverting our contemporary stereotypes around low quality, mass-produced Chinese goods. But this particular porcelain also reveals the hairline cracks in imperial control in Asia, and Europe's fragile competitive edge in modern markets. PRESENTER: Dr. Tim Murray, Emeritus Professor in Archaeology at La Trobe University and Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. ART: Standard Willow Ceramic Plate, Josiah Spode (1800-1820). Breaking Bread with AMSE Welcome to the first-ever Thanksgiving episode! Moni and Flossie wanted this episode to feel like a gathering place for friends and like-minded people, so the AMSE team members joined in! But we wouldn’t be AMSE without you, so pull your chair up to the table and join in on the discussion. What are some of your favorite family traditions & recipes? Rachel Carpenter, Copy Editor, has a super-secret stuffing recipe that she won’t share with anyone, but she will make and share that with you! And when she’s near her mother and family, they get together the night before Thanksgiving and prepare the turkey together. Military life being what it is, she doesn’t always get to be with her family. But she is grateful for technology because it enables her to be a part of the tradition she loves. Selena Conmackie, Ft. Hood Chapter Leader, is from Hawaii, and for her, pumpkin crunch (also called pumpkin dump cake) is her must-have Thanksgiving tradition. But the funny part about this tradition is every year she asks her friend for the recipe. Just asking her friend for the recipe has become a part of the tradition around the yummy dessert! Here is the recipe if you would like to try it: Pumpkin Crunch Recipe. Kat Calvo, Partnerships Manager, is all about the pumpkin crunch, too! And traditionally, her family also makes it. Around noon, she usually starts drinking Coquito. Plus, she wraps and stuffs her turkey with bacon. That’s right, bacon. She said it’s her husband’s favorite way to eat it: Bacon-Wrapped Turkey. Adam Evans, Luke AFB Chapter Leader, always hosts a Friendsgiving at their house the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. They have a game they play called Play it Forward. The day of, they all arise very early to begin the game. The game requires a deck of cards, with each card having a specific task: take a selfie with a stranger, complete this riddle, overtip your server, and so on. The tasks are straightforward, and part of the idea is to go to every local business throughout the city. Once the task is completed, the player logs in their deck of cards with the number on the bottom of the deck into an app to keep track of the card. Next, the player leaves the card they have completed with that person they met, and that person can enter the card’s number into the game. They’ve been playing this game for the past six years. Some of the cards have traveled 1.2 million miles! Here is the game: Sneaky Cards Game. Christinna Kitchaiya, Social Media Strategist, says that she used to be traditional in her meal. But her husband is from Thailand, and now that they have traveled the world, their dinner consists of all sorts of flavors from around the globe! Plus, they like to invite people who don’t have a family to share the holiday with their home. Moni Jefferson, Co-founder, and CEO used to have a very traditional meal and still does, but now she likes to order out. However, she does make traditional Puerto Rican rice called Arroz con Gandules (rice with pigeon peas). Her family used to get dressed up for Thanksgiving, but now they wear Christmas PJs all day and watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Anna Larson, Ft. Hood Chapter Leader, has a huge extended family. We’re talking sixty 1st cousins, and they always got together for Thanksgiving. Her uncle was a gym teacher at a high school. When she was younger, the entire family would meet at the gym and use the commercial kitchen to prepare the meal. And for some reason, because she’s not sure how or why it started, there would be homemade pinatas for the children and the teens. The ones for the teens were always harder to get open. But by the end of the day, there would be piles of candy everywhere! The pinata tradition has stayed with her. Flossie Hall, Co-founder, and COO grew up in a very small town with very traditional foods. It wasn’t until she became a military spouse and was introduced to all the diversity within the Thanksgiving holiday that she realized all the good food she could add to her meal! She still serves traditional dishes but enjoys other dishes as well. As the neighborhood cook, she enjoys inviting others over, especially soldiers with no one to share the holiday with, to share with her family of 6 for the holiday. Caroline Schafer, the podcast editor, grew up with the regular traditional foods and loves to make and serve them. But having a son with Celiac’s disease means she has learned to tweak as many recipes as she can. Plus, even though it’s not Christmas, she likes to eat on her Spode Christmas china because it reminds her of her Mimi, who is no longer with her, and Spode was the china she used for the holidays. Each team member took some time to answer some This or That questions. We’d love to hear what you have to say! Sweet potatoes and yams - which is your favorite? Or are you like the AMSE team, and you aren’t sure of the difference? Canned cranberry or fresh cranberry sauce? Stuffing or dressing? Fun fact (because we found out some of the team didn’t know this): stuffing is what you stuff a turkey with, and dressing is served in a dish on the side. Cook or take-out? Everyone cooks. Mostly. Paper plates or China? Pecan or pumpkin pie? Of course, a Thanksgiving podcast wouldn’t be the same if each of us didn’t share what we’re grateful for this year. Even with all that 2020 has brought us, each of us shares our unique and heartfelt gratitude. Of course, one of those things we are all grateful for is you! If you’re new to Owning Up, make sure and subscribe, so you’ll know when a new episode drops. You can also join the Facebook group to see what other milspouse entrepreneurs are up to and receive the latest AMSE news. We’d love to have you join our fantastic community! I am joined by Andy Neilson to chat about the buyer’s journey - quite literally. Andy has been involved in procurement for much of his career - from the world of the potteries working with brands such as Royal Worcester, Denby and Spode to Halfords, Fitness First, and he held a global position at Clarks as Group Head/Vice President of Procurement Supply Chain & Logistics. There isn’t much Andy doesn’t know about procurement. So the sales woman meets the buyer! But this wasn’t a showdown and the normal battle we have been used to all of these years. This was a human conversation about how buyer’s can actually teach sales people a huge amount about building relationships. You can imagine that I loved it! Andy now runs his own business working as a consultant to show businesses not only all of the amazing knowledge he has in procurement, but working with sales people to create cost savings through collaboration whilst building long term relationships. We talk about… Aspiring to be a fighter pilot His journey in procurement from the potteries to Global VP Human relationships in business The devastating impact of his breakdown His ongoing journey with mental wellness How sales and procurement can be a match made in heaven… …who knew! You can connect with Andy here… www.twisted-orange.co.uk https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrewneilson1/ Grab a cuppa and enjoy this insightful human conversation. Jules x

Ten years ago when the first British Ceramics Biennial took place, things didn't look good for pots or Stoke-on-Trent, known as 'the potteries' of the UK. The 240-year-old Spode factory had shut, ceramics had a dusty image and the pot-making artist Grayson Perry said the art world had more of a problem with his being a potter than with him wearing a frock. In Front Row this evening Kirsty will hear how things have changed. Now the old Spode works hosts artists studios and a boutique hotel and this year is at the heart of multiple exhibitions featuring the work of 300 artists - both established and emerging, from home and abroad. US author Nell Zink's new novel Doxology features two generations of an American family coming of age, one before 9/11, one after. She tells Kirsty about her decision to broaden the scope of her writing to tell a story of modern America and the stark differences between Baby Boomers and 'Generation Z'. Tamsin Grey is one of the five authors shortlisted for the BBC National Short Story Award. The writer discusses her story My Beautiful Millennial, which is about a lone young woman living in London and her complicated relationship with an older man. And The Jumper Factory, a prison drama developed by the Young Vic Theatre with the help of eight serving prisoners. It's performed by actors with little or no stage experience, though all of them have been affected in some way by the criminal justice system. The play was intended for performance within prisons, but has been such a hit that it is now touring for the public. Presenter Kirsty Lang Producer Olive Clancy
Earlier this year Charlotte was asked by Stoke and North Staffs Women's Network to host an International Women's Day event discussing Women in Ceramics. It was held at the Potbank Hotel at the old Spode site in Stoke and featured a teaser for a film the network had commissioned and worked on called Bound By Clay. The project comes to an end this month so Charlotte caught up with Vicki McGarvey from Stoke and North Staffs Women's Network. I love a good nosey around so when I heard the ACAVA studios at Spode were holding an open day there was only one place I was going to be. There are 43 artists based at the old pottery and as much as I'd love to, there simply isn't time to speak to all of them in 15 minutes so this is just a quick snapshot. A wonderland of truly wondrous things That nowhere else upon this Earth are found; Of reptiles rare, and birds that have no wings, And animals that live deep in the ground; And those poor simple children of the Earth, (A disappearing race you here may meet), Whom whites have driven from their land of birth To regions still untrod by booted feet.1 Danie Mellor’s (re)creation of this gleefully contrived never-never land is realised in his phantasmagorical tableau The contrivance of a vintage Wonderland (A magnificent flight of curious fancy for science buffs…a china ark of seductive whimsy…a divinely ordered special attraction…upheld in multifariousness) 2007, which is the kind of diorama that should have been on display in the social history museums of the past. Mellor’s magical installation conjures up flights of fancy that might have been the imaginations of those terrified and ignorant initial ‘boat people’. Mellor’s creatures are manufactured from an amalgam of the man-made and the natural: real macropod paws and ears, and smaller marsupial possum paws and ears adorn life-size fibreglass models encrusted with a mosaic of shattered blue and white willow pattern Spode crockery – with one red and white willow pattern oddity.2 A motley flock of stuffed native birds – a giant emu, an owl, brilliantly coloured parrots, including hybrids – and a tree cloaked in mosaic rather than bark conjure metaphors of the hybridity that most of contemporary Indigenous Australians experience everyday. Notes 1. AG Bolam, The trans-Australian wonderland, Melbourne: The McCubbin-James Press, 1927. 2. Spode is an English manufacturer of pottery and porcelain, based in Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom, c. 1770.
