Dr. Philip Räth, Managing Director at Palleos, discusses the advantages of a mid-size contract research organization compared to a large CRO. Customized solutions, strong cross-departmental cooperation, and fast decision-making are key to addressing the most significant unmet needs of clinical trial sponsors. This nimble clinical trial model, supported by machine learning, emphasizes collaboration and transparency. Philip explains, "In the end, we are a service industry, so it's always about time, costs, and quality. So, certain structures have been established in terms of project management and how you set up trials. We have regulations in place that are very clear on how things should get done. So, I think what collaboration enables is getting something done together. Collaboration between sponsors and CROs can transform the landscape and situation where collaboration enables trust and, therefore, change is possible." "I think that's always the biggest challenge for collaboration. You have change in the project, you have change in the clinical trial landscape in terms of maybe IT or information systems which become more prominent, or there are changes in regulation. So tackling these changes is mostly done through collaboration with a big foundation and trust so people can make bigger jumps and quicker decisions instead of just looking at what's on the contract regarding the deliverables." #Palleos #ClinicalTrials #CRO #ContractResearchOrganization palleos.com Download the transcript here

CX Leader Podcast with Steve Walker | A resource for customer experience leaders
There are many companies today that have embraced customer experience as a key strategic practice, working hard to put the customer first. But there's often a part of the customer's journey that is overlooked: when it's time to pay the bill. Even in a recent episode, our host Pat Gibbons gave an example of a company dismissing customer feedback that identified invoicing as a pain point. So why do companies often adopt this mentality? Host Pat Gibbons welcomes Philip Rürup, founder and CEO of troy, a customer experience focused collections company based in Germany, for a discussion on why CX professionals often overlook the payment process, and why it's worth their attention.
Vært: Kaare Svejstrup See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
As patients infected with the delta variant of the COVID-19 virus fill hospitals in parts of Missouri, and the virus spreads new infections around the country, Washington University data scientists and infectious diseases specialists are urging people to mask up again, regardless of vaccination status. The researchers say that although vaccination remains remarkably effective, masking and other public health practices that slowed the spread prior to the availability of vaccines are necessary again. Clay Dunagan, MD, a professor of medicine, senior vice president and chief clinical officer for BJC HealthCare and a member of the Metropolitan St. Louis Pandemic Task Force says that as case numbers rise, public health measures have become more important. Dunagan, and fellow infectious diseases specialist Hilary M. Babcock, MD, a professor of medicine and medical director of infection prevention and occupational infection prevention for BJC HealthCare, say even if more people get vaccinated, it will be weeks before they are protected, and during those weeks, people will need to turn back to the practices that protected them before vaccines became available. Meanwhile, Philip R.O. Payne, PhD, the Janet and Bernard Becker Professor and director of the Institute for Informatics, associate dean for health information and data science and the chief data scientist at the School of Medicine, says computer models his team has created continue to predict a rapid increase in infections in St. Louis and in the surrounding area. And he says those models don't show a peak yet, meaning we could be in the current wave of infections for quite some time. The podcast, “Show Me the Science,” is produced by the Office of Medical Public Affairs at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
There is inequality in the United States, a fact most people accept and which data certainly bears out. But how bad do you think that inequality is, say, based on comparing the wealth held by the average Black person in America and the average white person? This is one of the questions that Jennifer Richeson, a social psychologist at Yale University, studies. She has news -- bad news -- about both the actual gap and what people across the board think that gap is. First off, the facts. The Black-white wealth gap in the United States is, in Richeson's words, “staggeringly large.” Citing figures from 2016, she notes that “the average Black family had about 10 percent of the wealth of the average white family.” The actual percentage in wealth improved slightly in the five years since, “but the important thing is that it's a huge, staggering gap that has been persistent for 50 to 60 years.” With the gap so large and so persistent, you might expect estimates of its size to reflect reality. You would be mistaken, as Richeson tells interviewer David Edmonds in this Social Science Bites podcast. “If you ask the average American on any given day, they will probably say the wealth gap is around 65, 70 percent. … That's not only wrong, it's very wrong compared to the actual wealth gap. … Part of the reason we're so wrong is because we really believe that since the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, things have gotten dramatically better and are continuing to get better.” The perception is that roughly since the Civil Rights era the gap narrowed from about half to near parity. Respondents to these sorts of questions “feel compelled to conform to this narrative of racial progress” in their estimates, a narrative that Richeson has likened to a mythology. “No, things are not fine – they are similarly bad as they were in the 60s. That's true for the wealth gap, that's true for the wage gap. Income is slightly better, but not much. It's a persistent and pervasive staggering inequality that's stubborn, and our psychology refuses to believe that.” Visions of this delusional economic advancement are shared broadly across the nation's economic and ethnic strata; “Black Americans,” Richeson says, “are more accurate but still really wrong.” Her research has found that the more you believe in a just world, the more your estimate will underestimate the gap. This suggests in part why Black Americans – with daily experiences of structural inequality – give estimates that are at least a little closer to the mark. “One reason we believe there is this gap between Black Americans and white Americans is because of the differential tendency to believe that outcomes are fair and only determined by your individual effort, talent, hard work.” This massive misperception matters. While “being this wrong about anything is interesting” academically, Richeson says, the magnitude of this misperception affects individual and societal wellbeing; it also undermines the idea behind the so-called American dream, that American society is a meritocracy. American cannot, she says, “just know the truth and do nothing about it.” Richeson, the Philip R. Allen Professor of Psychology at Yale, received the SAGE-CASBS Award in 2020 for her work and will deliver a COVID-delayed lecture at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University later this year. That was one of a number of honors she has accumulated, including a 2007 John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (known as the “genius award”), a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (2015), the Mamie Phipps Clark and Kenneth B. Clark Distinguished Lecture Award from Columbia University (2019), the Career Trajectory Award from the Society of Experimental Social Psychology (2019), and a Carnegie Foundation Senior Fellowship (2020).

TW/CW This film either depicts or discusses child murder, infanticide, and suicide. This week we headed over to India to watch the horror movie “The House Next Door”, aka “Aval”. A nod to “The Exorcist” and some good ol’ fashioned ghost stories kept us guessing as to how this movie was going to end. The cinemotography was gorgeous and the fact that this was recorded in 3 languages simultaneously astounded us. For our history lesson, Dalia went back in time and scooped up some knowledge on trephination in South America and Mexico from over 1000 years ago. Jennifer Richeson is a social psychologist who studies racial identity and interracial interactions. She is currently the Philip R. Allen Professor of Psychology at Yale University where she heads the Social Perception and Communication Lab. Professor Richeson details the ways that racial inequality, psychology, and systems of privilege relate to one another. She also highlights how basic notions of what it means to be “American” are entangled with “whiteness” and other identities. That relationship helps to explain the appeal of Trumpism and other forms of white neofascism. Professor Richeson also cautions that “implicit bias” has gained a great deal of attention in terms of how Americans now understand racism and white supremacy – but the reality is that “old fashioned racism” remains the dominant threat to black and brown people's life chances and freedom. Chauncey DeVega reviews the good, the bad, and the ugly of these last few weeks which has seen Trump's regime continue its unending assault on American democracy and freedom, the murder of George Floyd by one of America's brutal police, protests and civil unrest in response to that crime, and a country which overall is in the midst of great social and political convulsions. And Chauncey DeVega shares his experience with the Chicago uprising and riots and offers both great praise and some concern for the young lions who are leading the struggle. There are so many great reasons to do resistance training - even for endurance athletes and self-described non-athletes who simply want to increase healthspan. We know that strength training improves quality of life, bone health, insulin sensitivity, body composition, and neurological health. However, in this uncertain era of COVID-19, commercial gyms are almost universally closed and many people are challenged to find new ways to maintain their training regimen. On this podcast, NBT Head of Strength and Conditioning, Zach Moore, CSCS is with me to discuss the best strategies for adapting your strength training routine - or starting one - when you don’t have a gym. He describes creative ways to use bodyweight and household items to challenge yourself and load muscles and shares his favourite online resources to refer to for proper form. If you're just considering adding strength training to your routine, Zach also offers a simple way to get started. Part of the issue undoubtedly has to do with the intractable mind-body problem, but part of it may also be due to the effort of standardization of diagnosis set in motion by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Is there a way to move forward? Our guest is optimistic. Paul McHugh, MD, is one of the most important figures in academic psychiatry of the last 30 years.
