Seattle Mennonite Church Sermons

Sabbath was to be the fountain around which the garden of all public life and policy grew in ancient Israel. On six days the people were to work, tending that garden, ensuring its health and growth and accessibility to all people, and on the seventh day they were to participate in the proper end and fulfillment of all work: reception of the fruits of perfect sanctuary. In rabbinic tradition, it is taught that if the people observe Sabbath completely and perfectly even once, the Messiah will come. The world where the sanctuary of Sabbath is truly established is the Promised Land.Sermon begins at minute marker 5:07 Luke 6:1–16ResourcesHeschel, Abraham Joshua. “The Sabbath”.Martin Luther King, Jr., "Beyond Vietnam": Speech at Riverside Church Meeting, New York, N.Y., April 4, 1967. Hello Listeners! In this episode, we had the opportunity to have a conversation with J. Bernardt J. Bernardt, also known as Jinte Deprez (from Balthazar), will release his second studio album, ‘Contigo' via Play It Again Sam. For information to listeners, Deprez is best known as one of the singer-songwriter duo of Balthazar, one of Belgium's most beloved and respected alt-rock bands for over two decades. As a group, they have performed at various prestigious events and venues such as All Points East, British Summer Time, Electric Ballroom, Village Underground, Scala, and have sold over 600,000 albums worldwide. J. Bernardt with ‘Contigo' - derived from the Spanish word meaning “with you”—is a dramatic, captivating, and colorful work, filled with drama and brought to life by the luxurious melodies, vocals, and production from the master auteur, inventor, and music singer. The lead single, titled “Don't Get Me Wrong,” once again showcases Bernardt's unique ability to blend pop orchestration with a touch of funk, creating something truly mesmerizing. Speaking about the song, Deprez explained, “‘Don't Get Me Wrong' explores a miscommunication skill that misses the mark, even sparked by the sabotaging desires of two people who choose projection over self-reflection . A classically trained violinist, Deprez has scored all the orchestration for Contigo. He is a generalist a (singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, arranger, producer, engineer, and programmer). He began producing Balthazar's first album in 2008 (co-producing three of their five albums to date), and his debut album (released in 2016) was entirely self-made. While the sound of Running Days was shaped by electronics, the new album Contigo is based on an old-school band – a group of Deprez's “highly talented” friends, whom he guided through intense rehearsals and performances, “searching for that spark,” ably assisted by producer and mixer Tobie Speleman. The prophet Isaiah writes poetry: to express deep love between God and God's beloveds, to convey heartache, to cleverly and poignantly pierce through word play, to evoke hope and catalyze action, to faithfully proclaim the truest nature of God. If poetry is good enough for Isaiah, pastor Megan suggests, it might just be good enough for us. We hear of sacred love, heartbreak, longing, and conviction from poets Jane Kenyon, Naomi Shihab Nye, Marwan Makhoul, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Lucille Clifton. Today's proper preface for the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is a synthesis of this mystery: For you preserved the most Blessed Virgin Mary from all stain of original sin, so that in her, endowed with the rich fullness of your grace, you might prepare a worthy Mother for your Son and signify the beginning of the Church, his beautiful Bride without spot or wrinkle. She, the most pure Virgin, was to bring forth a Son, the innocent Lamb who would wipe away our offenses; you placed her above all others to be for your people an advocate of grace and a model of holiness. And so, in company with the choirs of Angels, we praise you, and with joy we proclaim: Holy…. A meditation on trust in God, preached by Fr. Eric Nicolai at Lyncroft Centre, Toronto, on the eve of the solemnity of the Immaculate conception. Music: J. S. Bach, Prelude (Cello Suite No. 3, BWV 1009) on Museopen.org. Down Home Cajun Music- J' Ai Ete Au BalOn this episode we explore the history of one of Cajun Music's most familiar songs. First recorded version was in January of 1929 by Bertrand & Pitre (Rabbit Stole The Pumpkin), later in the same year, Soileau and Robin recorded their take on the melody, (Je T'Ai Recontre Dans Le Brouillard). In the same year Babineaux & Guidry recorded yet another take on the melody, (J' Vai Jouer Celea Pour Toi). While many believe that Iry Lejeune recorded the first commonly known version of "I Went To The Dance", we know for certain that Joe Falcon's 1934 version is the first (Ne Buvez Plus Jamais). Later in 1938 J.B. Fuselier recorded his take on the song as "Chere Te Te". During the 1950's, Nathan recorded his version as "Point De Lou" and Lawrence used the melody for "Johnny Can't Dance". Jeremiah 26, 11-16: First reading is from a sermon by the prophet Jeremiah in the temple. He's warning them that the temple will be destroyed. So there is this confrontation between Jeremiah and the authorities of Judah. He declares his innocence like Christ and is eventually saved by the intervention of the king. In the Gospel of the day we have the account of the death of John the Baptist (Matt 14, 1-12). Now Herod is in his own party, so he is in his own element. The wine is flowing. He has nobody to guide him. He has already a pretty hedonistic attitude, and this leads to the beheading of John the Baptist. Titian has a spectacular painting of the moment when Salome gives the head of John the Baptist to her mother, Herodias. It dates to around 1515 and I remember seeing it with excitement in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery in Rome. Lord, let me not be afraid of the cross, or what people call the cross. The seal of Opus Dei: the Cross at the heart of the world. It is not like a medal that encircles the cross, or restricts its extent, or where it ought to be. The circle is not just a circle. It is a globe. Music: J.S. Bach, "Jesu, meine Freude", BWV 227. Thumbnail: Titian, "Salome with the head of John the Baptist," 1515, Galleria Doria Pamphilj, Rome. My friend Tiber suggested that I make a recording of this poem as there seems to be no spoken English version of it to be found yet, so here it is. I hope you enjoy and that it is also useful given the poem's rich conveyed wisdom. Music: J.S. Bach - Concerto in D Minor BWV1043, Largo played by Daniel Estrem Time goes by, time comes along, All is old and all is new; What is right and what is wrong, You must think and ask of you; Have no hope and have no fear, Waves that rise can never hold; If they urge or if they cheer, You remain aloof and cold. To our sight a lot will glisten, Many sounds will reach our ear; Who could take the time to listen And remember all we hear? Keep aside from all that patter, Seek yourself, far from the throng When with loud and idle clatter Time goes by, time comes along. Nor forget the tongue of reason Or its even scales depress When the moment, changing season, Wears the mask of happiness - It is born of reason's slumber And may last a wink as true: For the one who knows its number All is old and all is new. Be as to a play, spectator, As the world unfolds before: You will know the heart of matter Should they act two parts or four; When they cry or tear asunder From your seat enjoy along And you'll learn from art to wonder What is right and what is wrong. Past and future, ever blending, Are the twin sides of same page: New start will begin with ending When you know to learn from age; All that was or be tomorrow We have in the present, too; But what's vain and futile sorrow You must think and ask of you; For the living cannot sever From the means we've always had: Now, as years ago, and ever, Men are happy or are sad: Other masks, same play repeated; Diff'rent tongues, same words to hear; Of your dreams so often cheated, Have no hope and have no fear. Hope not when the villains cluster By success and glory drawn: Fools with perfect lack of luster Will outshine Hyperion! Fear it not, they'll push each other To reach higher in the fold, Do not side with them as brother, Waves that rise can never hold. Sounds of siren songs call steady Toward golden nets, astray; Life attracts you into eddies To change actors in the play; Steal aside from crowd and bustle, Do not look, seem not to hear From your path, away from hustle, If they urge or if they cheer; If they reach for you, go faster, Hold your tongue when slanders yell; Your advice they cannot master, Don't you know their measure well? Let them talk and let them chatter, Let all go past, young and old; Unattached to man or matter, You remain aloof and cold. You remain aloof and cold If they urge or if they cheer; Waves that rise can never hold, Have no hope and have no fear; You must think and ask of you What is right and what is wrong; All is old and all is new, Time goes by, time comes along. From Ernescliff College in Toronto, Fr. Eric Nicolai prepares for the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15, and the memorial of St. Maximilian Kolbe on August 14. The evil that took place in Auschwitz is difficult for us to understand. How can one stand by and allow this to happen? Here we see the pressing need for the formation of conscience. Music J.S. Music: J. S. Bach Adagio e Dolce BWV 527 (arr. Per-Olov Kindgren) The side rooms all around the temple were wider at each successive level. The structure surrounding the temple was built in ascending stages so that the rooms widened as one went upward. A stairway went up from the lowest floor to the top floor through the middle floor. (Ezekiel41:7) Still upward be your onward course: For this, I pray today; Still upward as the years go by, And seasons pass away. Still upward in this coming year, Your path is all untried; Still upward may you journey on, Close by your Savior's side. Still upward although sorrow come, And trials crush your heart; Still upward may they draw your soul, With Christ to walk apart. Still upward till the day shall break, And shadows all have flown; Still upward till in Heaven you wake, And stand before the throne. We should never be content to rest in the mists of the valley when the summit of Mount Tabor awaits us. How pure is the dew of the hills, how fresh is the mountain air, how rich the food and drink of those who dwell above, whose windows look into the New Jerusalem! Many saints are content to live like people in coal mines, who never see the sun. Tears sadden their faces when they could be anointed with heavenly oil. I am convinced that many believers suffer in a dungeon when they could walk on a palace roof, viewing the lush landscape and Lebanon. Wake up, believers, from your lowly condition! Throw away your laziness, sluggishness, coldness, or whatever is interfering with your pure love for Christ. Make Him the Source, the Center, and the One who encompasses every delight of your soul. Refuse to be satisfied any longer with your meager accomplishments. Aspire to a higher, a nobler, and a fuller life. Upward to heaven! Nearer to God! -Charles H. Spurgeon I want to scale the utmost height, And catch a gleam of glory bright; But still, I'll pray, till heaven, I've found, Lord, lead me on to higher ground! Not many of us are living at our best. We linger in the low- lands because we are afraid to climb the mountains. The steepness and ruggedness discourage us, so we stay in the midst of the valleys and never learn the mystery of the hills. We do not know what is lost by our self-indulgence, what glory awaits if we only have the courage to climb, or what blessings we will find if we will only ascend the mountains of God! J. R. M. Too low they build who build beneath the stars.

Down Home Cajun Music- J.B. FuselierJ.B. Fuselier was a popular Cajun fiddler during the 1930's and 1940's. He first started recording with Beethoven Miller's group, Miller's Merrymakers and soon was leading the band under his name. Even during this time, J.B. would bring his accordion to dances and play it. He is credited by many musicians to bringing the accordion back in style.  After WWII, Fuselier joined with Iry LeJeune and the two ruled the dance hall circuit until 1955 when LeJeune was killed and Fuselier severely injured when hit by a car. Despite his injuries, Fuselier never stopped playing and recorded a number of sides for Goldband in the 1960s.1.Millers Merrymakers- Te Ma Lessa Jolie Bond (Bluebird) 19362.Milles Merrymakers- Pine Island (Bluebird) 19363.Millers Merrymakers- Elton Two Step (Bluebird) 19374.Millers Merrymakers- Lake Arthur Stomp (Bluebird) 19375.J.B. Monday has emerged into the music world with a unique style. His velvety vocals weave a tapestry of smooth sounds. Pulling from old-school hip-hop and soulful R&B, his melodic lyrics reveal diverse content. J. Monday writes about success, heartbreak, and friendship. He may offer a look through the eyes of the impoverished or share a love story. Occasionally releasing upbeat singles with dance vibes, he is also known to dive deep into reflection. J. Monday experiments with subject and genre, creating a catalog of songs for every mood. An artist obsessed with quality, J. Monday takes special care to release work that is sonically pleasing. He pays close attention to what falls into each pocket of a track. He is honing his craft, evolving into a specific style. Although his songs can be filled with hip-hop and pop energy, he avoids being too trendy. Instead, J. Monday is grounded in refreshing originality. Inspired by a wide range of artists, his influences include everything from Erykah Badu and John Legend, to country artists like Rascal Flatts. With deep love and appreciation for music, J. Monday has maintained his interest level by studying the masters. Although he wrote his first song in 2006, J. Monday held back from music until the time was right. Well-structured in everyday life, he focused on practical endeavors, like formal education. Born in Miami, Florida, following Hurricane Andrew, J. Monday and his family moved to Gainesville where he was raised. He relocated to North Carolina to attend Methodist University after high school. A doctor of physical therapy, J. Monday is currently based in the Raleigh area. Unable to continue denying his destiny, he began taking vocal lessons, learning how to turn his dream into a reality. Voice classes led to more practice, and J. Monday dove further into his craft, unleashing a wild creativity. As he began recording and releasing his original work, J. Monday started taking it more seriously. He was able to sing in the proper key and pitch, hitting notes with intention. After a life-long obsession with music, he was primed for success. Picking the brains of engineers in the studio, he learned through trial and error. Although it was nerve-racking at first, J. Monday started to feel at home behind the mic. Self-taught, his work is unique by nature. His lyrics and metaphors are palpable for everyone. Detailed in creating a coherent sound, J. Monday uses his voice like a skilled musician. He cares about the overall instrumentation, and J. Monday is confident in his ability. An up-and-coming artist, J. Monday's career is taking off. His first official single, “Cross Your Mind,” from his debut 2021 album, “Path Less Travelled,” reached over 20,000 streams in a matter of months, an impressive feat for an independent artist. The track exploded. It was featured on Eminem's radio station, Shade 45, and led to an interview with Hip-Hop Atlanta. In addition to these media placements, J. Monday was also featured in 50 New Artists to Watch Magazine and Hip-Hop Weekly. He is now working with the leading artist development team, Wealth Nation, to help guide, promote, and build his brand. He is quickly expanding his reach and maximizing his current exposure. With new singles lined up for this year and the return of live events, J. Monday has plenty in store for fans to look forward to. Deeply connected to the music, J. Monday allows the words to reveal themselves in the sound. He channels powerful artistic energy, becoming a vessel for lyrics to flow through. The moment takes over and inspiration sinks in. There is so much diversity coming out of one individual, it's apparent that J. Monday is emulating all of his role models into one. With an abundance of synthetic sound permeating and saturating the airwaves, the market is flooded with artificiality. Organic and truly authentic, J. Monday dispenses a jewel of knowledge on life, creating a therapeutic escape for listeners and giving his audience peace. Music: J. Monday Latest Project available on Audiomack. Ahead of his appearance on the pod next week, we talk about his whirlwind last 12 months starting with the "North Cack" video, then interview The Sinopsis about all things Kooley High — the new album's title, 9th Wonder's involvement, and which NBA team Kooley High most resembles. It's a fun one. Enjoy! Music: J.K. The Reaper - "City Boy" (from his new album, Digital Tears) Cameron Butler - "Woah" Sinopsis - "Middle East Coastin.Rx" King Mez - "King's Khrysis" ft.
