Part 1 How to Be an Adult in Relationships by David Richo Summary"How to Be an Adult in Relationships" by David Richo focuses on how emotional maturity and self-awareness play crucial roles in building healthy and fulfilling relationships. Here's a summary of the key concepts from the book:Self-Awareness and Emotional Maturity Richo emphasizes the importance of understanding oneself to navigate relationships successfully. This includes recognizing one's own needs, feelings, fears, and patterns of behavior that affect interactions with others. By becoming more self-aware, individuals can respond to situations rather than react impulsively.Taking Responsibility Adults in relationships take responsibility for their thoughts and actions. This means owning one's feelings, rather than projecting them onto partners. Richo advises that each person should work toward being accountable and understanding how personal choices influence relationship dynamics.Setting Boundaries A crucial aspect of being an adult in relationships is knowing how and when to set healthy boundaries. Richo provides guidance on identifying one's limits, communicating them clearly, and respecting others' boundaries as well.Effective Communication Open, honest communication is foundational to successful relationships. Richo encourages readers to express their needs and feelings without blame or criticism. Learning to listen actively and empathetically is also crucial.Accepting Imperfection Richo discusses the importance of accepting both ourselves and our partners as imperfect beings. He advocates for compassion towards oneself and others, and understanding that mistakes and shortcomings are a natural part of being human. The Role of Vulnerability Being vulnerable is highlighted as a strength in relationships. Sharing one's fears and insecurities can deepen intimacy and trust. Richo suggests that vulnerability fosters connection when approached with openness and honesty.Balancing Independence and Togetherness Richo emphasizes the need for individuals to maintain their independence while also nurturing a close, intertwined relationship. This balance is essential to healthy partnerships where both individuals can grow personally and as a couple.Therapeutic Exercises The book includes practical exercises and reflections to help readers apply the principles discussed. These activities encourage readers to assess their own experiences, practice deeper self-reflection, and build healthier relational habits. Conclusion David Richo's "How to Be an Adult in Relationships" serves as a guide to achieving emotional maturity and developing strong, healthy connections with others. It encourages readers to cultivate understanding, communication, and compassion within themselves and their relationships.Part 2 How to Be an Adult in Relationships AuthorDavid Richo is an American psychotherapist, author, and teacher known for his work in psychology, spirituality, and relationships. February is a month full of hearts… Chocolate hearts, candy hearts, paper garland hearts, and heart-shaped cards. And in the spirit of that tradition, we're celebrating hearts this month on the Habit Thrive Podcast in our own way. We're kicking off our theme of Whole Heart Living today by thinking about what “whole heart living” means to us. When we think about heart health, we usually picture the physical health of our heart. Anatomy, physiology, valves and blood flow. But heart health is so much more than that; it's ... well ... emotional, too. Negative emotions like grief, depression, loneliness or anger can increase the risk for heart disease or actually do damage to the heart. That's why it's important to use our tools like journaling, yoga, exercise and meditation to help with stress management and creating some feel-good emotions instead. That includes taking care of ourselves, and on that note I want to share with you an amazing summit that is happening this month: Love the Skin You're In, hosted by my friend and colleague Sherry Jibb. This free Women's Empowerment Series is happening February 9-13, and there are so many incredible women signed on to share their expertise and help other women “embrace their true essence”! I really hope that you'll join me as I chat about habits, rituals and routines that will help us LOVE the Skin We're In. So, take a deep breath (It's good for your heart!), let it out slowly, and I will see you next weekend. Lorrie xoxox Sign up for the Loving The Skin You're In series here. Show notes   Principle of Nutrigenomics in Simple Terms You cannot out-supplement a crappy diet. 60% of determinants of health are about diet. 20% is intelligent supplementation. 20% are topicals applied from the outside, to biostimulate the skin. Sugar attaching to collagen in your skin causes fine lines and wrinkles.   Do's and Don'ts for the Skin The closest the food looks to its natural state, the better it is for you. The sad diet is devoid of nutrients, highly processed, and high in sugar and unhealthy oils. Sugar, fats, and dairy (for some people) mostly affect the skin. Essential fatty acids must be balanced. Too much omega 6, and too low omega 3 pushes you to inflammatory pathways. Many people are mineral and vitamin deficient, especially vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc.   The Gut-Brain-Skin Axis There's chemical information shared in these three all the time. Fiber helps with dysbiosis. Fiber is the preferred food of good bacteria in the gut. Butyrate heals the gut, propionate affects the liver, and acetate goes out to the skin. If you want good skin, start with fiber.    Spore-based probiotics (Bacillus) and diet  The microbiome creates vitamin K, hormones, and other neurotransmitters that are essential for well-being. Gut-produced neurotransmitters don't cross the blood-brain barrier, but it wakes up afferent fibers of the vagus nerve going to the brain which sends information back down to the gut and spleen that regulates inflammation. Most of the probiotics that we take are going to get destroyed in the stomach so they don't really do that much. You need above 2 billion CFU to have much effect.   Nutrients from Plants: The job of the pigments in plants is to protect the plants from UV damage. So when you eat food that is high in these phytonutrients, you get the same skin protection.   When do you need deeper testing? It depends on what your objectives are. 70-80% of our patients will need treatments following the same principle: healing the gut, cutting down things that cause inflammation, and boosting the immune system. But to some people, these things wouldn't be enough, thus, the need for deeper testing. Some useful tests: whole genome sequencing vs 16S, GI tests, organic acids, and other metabolite tests, food sensitivity testing   Sleep, Stress and Skin You absolutely need at least 7 hours of sleep. During this critical time, your body can do its “housekeeping.” Breathing is the first aid for stress   Dr. Tager's Best Medicine: Being married to an amazing woman for 38 years who is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.

In order to love the skin you're in, you need to quiet the business of your critical mind and connect with your true essence. Your mind is a very busy place. What often blocks us from “loving the skin we're in” is the voice inside that is quick to pass judgement and criticize. By quieting the mind, you can tune into your true self – also known as your higher self. Let's talk about boobs! We love boobs (okay Amanda loves boobs). We're covering the new inclusive Adidas ad, Victoria Secret's disabled models, and the fantastic outcome to the US Women's Soccer Team lawsuit! Have you seen the latest Adidas ad (https://twitter.com/adidas/status/1491411609180327942)? It's full of boobs - beautiful, bare boobies that celebrate the fact that the beautiful breast comes in all shapes and sizes. Adidas is absolutely owning their inclusive marketing campaign and we are so glad to see them creating bras that support bigger boobs! We mention big boobs, small boobs, and trans boobs - all very important to note!! We also note that while this campaign is AWESOME, it does not have any trans representation in it - and this is something bra companies should definitely be including. Trans boobs need love and support, too! We're also talking about Victoria's Secret's inclusion of disabled models and think this is great. More and more lingerie companies are becoming diverse and inclusive - yay! Finally, we talk about the US Women's Soccer Team's successful lawsuit - we know we were talking about boobs, but this team wears sports bras so it TOTALLY FITS. Read about it here! Building Self-Confidence in Style with Denisse Espalter It's no doubt that our biggest enemy and worst critic in the world is ourselves. More often than not, we tend to wallow in the dark moments of our lives instead of looking ahead. But what we allow to linger in our heads and our hearts reflect on our outer disposition. At the end of the day, it's you who knows yourself best. So, would you bring yourself down and let it affect your life, or would you spend more effort loving yourself for who you are? In today's episode, Denisse Espalter joins us to talk about the idea behind Unboxed Life and Style. She shares some behind-the-scenes knowledge on running the brand and how she empowers women through it. Denisse delves deep into how to build self-confidence and teaches us how women can cultivate their personal style by looking both inside and outside. She imparts some helpful advice on how you, too, can start to shift your mindset and focus on improving yourself. If you're struggling with learning how to build self-confidence, this episode will offer invaluable insights to help you! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover how small businesses can effectively navigate the PR space. Find out how you can cultivate your personal style. Learn some tips on how to build self-confidence. Resources My first book, Relationship Ready: How I Stopped Fucking Randos and Started Cupcaking My Soulmate, is available on Amazon and Audible. Everyday Woman's Guide to Doing What you Love Unboxed Life and Style: Website | Instagram | Facebook Love the Skin You're In Course Episode Highlights Before Unboxed Life and Style Unboxed Life and Style evolved from the pandemic. Denisse previously worked for Lord + Taylor as a Regional Marketing and Events Coordinator before losing her job when COVID hit. Looking back on her big life experiences, she wanted to empower women to pivot their mindset when faced with challenges. Unboxed Life and Style evolved from feel-good boxes and self-care to coaching women in maneuvering their mindset. How to Navigate the PR Space and Get on TV Denisse did a segment around career pivoting amidst COVID on Ticker News. It is one of the highest promotional 24-hour news stations in Australia. Her background is in fashion marketing and design.  Denisse says it's about learning how to pitch yourself as an expert. You need to reach out and go for opportunities. Look at what's relevant now. Then, try to tie this into your business when sending a pitch. Denisse's Favorite and Not-So-Favorite 90s Trends Denisse's favorites include plaid shirts and velour tracksuits with matching jackets and pants. Not-so-favorite ones include “super” tracksuits, sheer dresses, and flare leg pants. Meanwhile, Denisse is unsure about short cardigan sweaters. Cultivating a Personal Style There is a lot of pressure in our society on what it means to look perfect. The key to having your personal style is loving yourself for who you are and your inner beauty. The more you do this, the more it will reflect on the outside. You can do all physical self-enhancements, but there are certain things about yourself that you can't change and need to embrace. Learning how to build self-confidence shows externally as well.  The Biggest Struggles People Have When Leveling Up Their Style One struggle is developing the maturity level of your style.  As you age, you can have a more mature look and still look stylish and incredible. Another thing is learning what skincare routine works for you. Finally, people find it challenging to get back into a routine. How Denisse Works on Skincare for Her Clients Denisse can refer her clients to estheticians if they want to dig deeper into skincare. Her personal favorite brand is Kiehl's. Many women come to Denisse asking about skincare for their teens.  Another tip on how to build self-confidence is to have a routine of taking care of yourself. Young girls learn a lot about the importance of skincare on the internet. Parents only need to encourage them at home. Unboxed Life and Style Boxes as gifts are one of the first pieces of Unboxed Life and Style. The idea came to fruition because Denisse felt that people were getting lost in the mayhem of COVID. It aims to uplift people and give them a surprise that would make them smile and feel great. She started with women's, teen boxes, special holiday little mini boxes, and customized boxes. Denisse tries to partner with women-owned or local businesses to support them and get unique products as well. Listen to the full episode to learn more about Unboxed Life and Style's boxes, from promotion to packing and shipping! On Everyday Woman's Guide to Doing What You Love This book is a co-authored book together with 30 to 40 women. It delves around what they want to teach women about being happy and life experiences that women can resonate with. Denisse connected with them as they were looking for more women to participate in their advocacy of empowering women. Denisse on Juggling Different Roles Denisse says it takes a lot of good communication and having a great partner to back her up. She's always motivated; she loves a long to-do list and crossing things off it. It's a matter of how much you want something to happen. She connects with people by sharing her expertise in the hopes that she can help them. Denisse's Daily Non-Negotiables Denisse enjoys a cup of coffee when she wakes up. Waking up a little earlier than everyone else allows Denisse to have her “me” time and keep herself centered and focused. She values being grateful and writing a gratitude list. Her Advice on How to Build Self-Confidence The majority of it comes down to adjusting your thoughts and your beliefs on who you are. Mistakes aren't permanent. Try to be positive in anything that you're doing. Give yourself credit for what you do. Surround yourself with people who make you happy and empower you. Take time for yourself and your body. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode “I want to help women develop, and encourage and empower them that when you are faced with these life experiences that you can go on, you can better yourself, and you can encourage. And as I always say, style your self-confidence.” “I think a lot of people, especially entrepreneurs, doubt themselves and [their] strengths and what they're capable of doing. And it's, you have to get out of that comfort zone. And you really have to push yourself.” “I think the main thing to [have] your personal style is really loving yourself for who you are and your inner beauty. The more you start doing that, the more it'll reflect on the outside.” “I think the first thing a lot of women do is put a lot of pressure on themselves on like, any mistakes you've made, or they are very hard on themselves. And, you know, mistakes aren't permanent. They're a reflection, and they're isolated moments in your life.” “On anything that you're doing, give yourself a pat in the back. Because being a mom, entrepreneur, living the day to day life that we live nowadays, isn't always like a walk in the park.” About Denisse Denisse Espalter is a renowned top Life & Style Coach and widely recognized and sought-after communications expert. She is the founder of Unboxed Life and Style, a lifestyle brand providing self-care and love through a monthly box. Self care. It's a hot topic right now, and not without good reason. It's an essential practice for our health - but as geeks, what's best for us? Let's face it. All those Insta posts about self care being baths, yoga, and meditation are bullshit. Like okay, Karen, if that's you, you do you. But that's not all self care is. Self care is any activity that lets your body and, maybe more importantly, your mind relax. This week, we're talking about the self care practices that we, as geeks, business owners, podcast hosts, and Twitch streamers do regularly. From creating a schedule and routine to reading cosy books to streaming on Twitch. The most important message is that your self care can look like whatever you want it to. Don't let anyone else dictate what your self care should look like. Do what makes YOU happy. What are your favourite ways to practice self care? Tune in to the latest episode of the Love the Skin You’re In podcast on iTunes: Episode 9: Under Eye Cream Facts You Need to Know for Youthful Eyes. Buying eye creams is complicated. There are so many different products and ingredients on the market that promise to do everything from eliminating wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness to reducing crow’s feet and dry skin. Today, Dr. Bernard Beldholm and dermal nurse Lea Barclay from Special Skin Solutions give expert advice on treating the most popular cosmetic eye concerns. This podcast will help you determine the best way to correct any eye problem you have. An important topic our experts cover in this YouTube video is why the skin around your eyes needs to be treated differently than the skin on the rest of your face. Because eye skin is more delicate, it shows signs of aging much faster than other areas. It also tends to be drier and thinner than facial skin. Therefore, eye products are formulated differently than the products you use on the rest of your face. With that in mind, today’s episode guides you to the best products and ingredients to help make your eyes look more youthful and rejuvenated. While there are many over-the-counter products available, when choosing eye cream, quality is what counts. Yes, eye creams can be expensive. But clinical treatments made with high-quality ingredients can last six to twelve months and deliver dramatic results. Best of all, with the right products, you only need to use a small dab to see remarkable improvement. When it comes to eye creams, a little goes a long way. That’s why it is important to choose products wisely. Muscle relaxant injections and fillers are also popular for treating crow’s feet and volume loss under the eyes. These work best when paired with at-home treatments for best results. Our experts explain how to combine treatments to turn back the clock on aging eyes. Everyone wants bright, youthful eyes. Watch the video to find out what you can do to make your eyes sparkle.  Would you like more information about cosmetic eye treatments and eye creams? On today's episode, Dr. Bernard Beldholm and dermal nurse Lea Barclay from Specialist Skin Solutions chat about the most common cosmetic eye concerns and how to treat them. As specialists in skin rejuvenation, they have invaluable secrets for how you can finally achieve more youthful eyes....starting now! If you have aging skin around your eyes, all hope is not lost. You may have tried OTC eye creams, rollers, compresses, makeup, and herbal remedies to fight aging skin around your eyes. Some of them may help, but they are often not enough to make a big difference, as you have probably noticed by now.  Today's podcast is for those of you who want to fight aging skin around your eyes with advanced treatments. The benefit of eye rejuvenation vs. home remedies is that you don't have to try to correct or fight aging eye skin every single day since in-office cosmetic treatments deliver long-term results for fresh, youthful eyes every day.  You will look like yourself, only better. And if you are sick of coworkers asking if you are stressed, tired, or sick because your eyes are making you look haggard, you should definitely tune in. As you get older, the delicate eye area develops all kinds of cosmetic problems. This can give you an unhealthy appearance, make you look older than your true age, as if you didn't get a full night of sleep, like you are rundown and need a vacation, or give you a sad appearance. Eye rejuvenation treatments such as hyaluronic acid fillers, injectable muscle relaxants, eye creams, PRP facials, laser therapy, Derma Stamp, and Skin Pen can help. On this episode, Dr. Bernard Beldholm is joined by dermal nurse Lea Barclay from Specialist Skin Solutions to find out more about how this powerful vitamin can dramatically renew your skin while solving a host of common skin concerns. Vitamin A is the foundation of any good skin routine. It can do wonders to improve many common conditions. Whether you have oily skin, acne, large pores, uneven skin tone, aging skin, poor texture, dry skin, or eczema, vitamin A can help.  As Lea has seen firsthand, in-office dermal treatments can help correct many of these conditions. But you can certainly boost your results by adding vitamin A to your daily beauty routine. Today's podcast talks all about the incredible skin-rejuvenating benefits of this amazing ingredient. We'll also cover how long it takes to see results, and exactly what kind of results you can expect. As wonderful as it is for your skin, vitamin A is not without controversy. Many people have heard conflicting things about trying vitamin A. Yes, it can correct many skin problems, but isn't it dangerous? The answer is usually no. Today's episode gets to the bottom of some common vitamin A myths. Sure, there can be some mild side effects. We'll talk about that on the podcast, too. For example, a little peeling or redness is common initially. However, these side effects can be mitigated. The trick is knowing how to use it correctly. Lea and Bernard discuss in detail the right way to apply vitamin A - and that includes some tips to avoid unnecessary irritation. For those of you who want to know more about how vitamin A can be a game changer for your skincare routine, we are glad you have joined us.  Would you like to learn more about this superstar ingredient? Check out the latest episode from the Love the Skin You’re In podcast on iTunes: Episode 4: Laser Genesis. Laser Genesis is a non-invasive medical laser treatment that gives remarkable results. It is an anti-aging powerhouse that fights fine lines, wrinkles, crow’s feet, and redness. It also dramatically improves the look of scars and helps large pores appear smaller. On this episode, Dr. Bernard Beldholm interviews dermal nurse Lea Barclay from Special Skin Solutions to find out more about Laser Genesis. You will learn all about how the device works to reach the deep layers of skin. That is where where collagen and elastin remodeling occurs. It is essential to reach this deep layer to make lasting change in your skin. The secret of Laser Genesis is the depth and pulsing that help it regenerate your skin over time. It solves a host of common skin problems that can be hard (if not impossible) to fight with topical skincare alone. If you are looking for long-term solutions to your skin woes or even want to repair dark marks and scars, Laser Genesis is perfect for that. The beautiful part of Laser Genesis is that it’s unlike harsh lasers that leave skin red and raw. Fast, gentle, and effective, it gives your skin real results in as little as four to six sessions with zero pain or downtime. Lea tells us all about what to expect during a treatment session, how long it takes to see results, and ways to maximize your results. If you are having a hard time choosing between laser treatments, today’s episode can help. Laser Genesis is one that does it all. Patients love the results, and its effects only get better with time. Discovering beautiful skin has never been easier. You can get the treatment done on your lunch break, then head back to work after if you want. There is no telltale redness or irritation, a dead giveaway of laser treatments of the past. Are you ready to learn more secrets about Laser Genesis? Tune in now for information that you can’t find anywhere else. Visit this link to read more about how Laser Genesis gives your skin that signature healthy, youthful, even-toned glow that you always wanted.. More info..

Protect the Skin You’re In by Jeffrey T. Bradley, Ann Arbor Skyline High School, Health & Medicine Magnet In collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Preventionwww.SkylineHealthMedicine.comSummary This lesson is designed to explore the importance of sun safety in relationship to skin cancer prevention. Students will begin with an inquiry based lab regarding sunscreen effectiveness. After analyzing the relationship between lab results and common student practices regarding sun screen use, students will administer and analyze a simple survey to their peers. This lesson will culminate with students developing and implementing a public service campaign designed to increase student use of sunscreen and sun safety awareness. In order for these activities to be most effective, the students should have prior knowledge of skin cancer. (If a lesson plan addressing skin cancer is needed, an educational module is available at http://www.cdc.gov/EXCITE/skincancer/mod10.htm). Learning Outcomes • The student will design and implement a lab to test the effectiveness of sunscreen using the scientific method. • The student will analyze the results of the lab and draw a conclusion on variables that might impact the effectiveness of various sunscreen products. • The student will implement and analyze a sun safety survey regarding awareness of this topic in grades 9-12. • The student will be able to explain the benefit of sunscreen use and other sun safety mechanisms by designing a public service campaign.
