In this episode, Clive Stephenson joins us to talk about how veterans can take better care of their health. Clive was the NCOIC of the Family Medicine Service at Brook Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, TX. He graduated the Interservice Physician Assistant Program in 2006 and went on to work as a Battalion Physician Assistant then as an Orthopedic Physician Assistant until retirement in 2015. He continued working in this role at WBAMC treating Active Duty, National Guard, Reservists, Veterans, and dependents in the Ft. Bliss area. PA Stephenson stresses three simple strategies to maintain your physical health: 1. Stay active, and keep moving 2. Watch your weight 3. See your primary care provider AT LEAST every 6 months (more frequently depending on age and medical conditions)

Meet Russell Midori, a New York City freelance news photographer, documentary filmmaker and co-founder and president of the Military Veterans in Journalism (MVJ), a relatively new professional association that builds community for vets, supports their career growth and advocates for diversifying newsrooms through hiring and promoting more vets. Midori served as a combat correspondent in the Marine Corps from 2008 to 2012, working as a video producer for Marine Forces Europe and Africa and the NCOIC of the Parris Island Public Affairs Office. During his enlistment, he held the rank of sergeant and was twice named an honor graduate of courses at the Defense Information School. According to  U.S. Census data, even though military veterans make up 7% of the population, approximately 2% percent of those who work in U.S. media are post-9/11 veterans. Why is this important? A recent Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) sponsored study conducted by the RAND Corporation and Syracuse University's Institute for Veterans revealed that organizations gain employees with extensive experience and competencies when they hire veterans. The study states, “Vets deliver subject matter expertise, years of on-the-job training and advanced skills in everything from information technology to transportation logistics and from supply-chain management to public relations. Vets can raise a company's workforce to the next level in many areas.” The MVJ is led and run by military veterans such as Midori and co-founder Zack Baddorf who acts as the Executive Director. In May of 2002, Cpl Hess received a lateral move to the 4066 MOS, and was promoted to the Rank of Sergeant (Sgt).  Upon completion of the Entry Level Small Systems Computer Specialist Course he was assigned as the NCOIC of the Field Response Team, HQHQSQDN, MCAS Miramar, CA. In July of 2005, Sgt Hess was assigned to 2nd Marine Division and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).  Upon returning from deployment, he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSgt).  After returning to 2nd Marine Division he was assigned as the Data Plans Chief for II Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) Forward in support of OIF.  In June of 2008, SSgt Hess transferred to 7th Communications Battalion and was assigned as the Data Chief for the 31st MEU. In June of 2009, SSgt Hess transferred to Marine Corps Network Operations and Security Center, now the Marine Corps Cyber Operations Group, where he served as the Incident Manager for the Marine Corps.  During this assignment, he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant (GySgt) and received a lateral move to the Information Assurance Technician MOS (0689). In June of 2011, GySgt was assigned to 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, CA.  From February to August of 2012, he was deployed with 1st Marine Division Forward in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  In July of 2013, GySgt Hess was selected to receive the Information Assurance Scholarship Program to attend the Naval Post Graduate School.  While in attendance at the Naval Post Graduate School, he was promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant (MSgt). In July of 2015, MSgt Hess was assigned as the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge and Chief Instructor of the Cybersecurity Technician and Managers School House aboard 29 Palms California.  During this assignment, MSgt Hess was responsible for training and certifying over 200 Cybersecurity Technicians, and ~50 Cybersecurity Managers.  MSgt Hess was frocked to the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant (MGySgt) in August of 2017. In Sept of 2017, MGySgt Hess assumed his post at I MEF initially serving as the Cybersecurity Chief, and then transitioning into the Cyberspace Operations Chief with the advent of the 17xx Occupational Field.  MGySgt Hess then transitioned to the MEF G-3 Fire and Effects Coordination Center (FECC) to assume the role of the Non-Kinetic Fires and Effects Chief, responsible for coordinating Operations Information Environment (OIE) effects into the Targeting Cycle. MGySgt Hess was selected from the Deputy Commandant of Information (DC I), Information Maneuver Division (IMD), Readiness Branch as the Cyberspace Operations Chief and Branch Chief to assume his current role as the DC I Senior Enlisted Advisor in June of 2021. Virgin Islands where she went on to join the U.S. Army in 2001, as a 68M Nutrition Care Specialist. Her first duty station was in Wurzburg Germany with the 67th Combat Support Hospital as well as her first deployment to Iraq in 2003. Her next duty station was in Ft. Benning Georgia,14th Combat Support Hospital where she was also deployed to Iraq Camp Bucca. As the only 68M present she was responsible for running her dietary clinic there supporting the detainees, military, contractors, and local nationals until the TIF theater internment facility was closed. Then she moved on to Camp Cropper and Tahji to support her fellow nutritionists and dietitians. She was promoted to SGT at Camp Cropper and took over as the NCOIC Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge of her clinic. Shortly after returning home from deployment she PCSd to Alaska and again served as the NCOIC of the Nutrition Care Department. While there she was sent to Korea to participate in their yearly exercise. She was again placed as the NCOIC for that particular mission. The next duty station was Ft. Bliss, William Beaumont Medical Center, where she worked as NCOIC of the Clinic, NCOIC of Production and Service, and then finally NCOIC of the Nutrition Care Division. In 2016 the US Army decided that SSG Douglas, Kay would be a Drill SGT. She completed training at The U.S. Army Drill SGT Academy. Then she PCSd to Ft. Leonard Wood where she was a Drill SGT and Sr Drill SGT for 3 full years. Her superpower was turning civilians into Soldiers and Soldiers into outstanding NCOs. She is currently back in Ft. The family of SPC Vanessa Guillen, the 3rd Cavalry Regiment Soldier slain at Fort Hood on April 22, 2020, returned to the installation to join with leaders from III Corps and her Brave Rifles nearly a year later to unveil a gate on the east side of the installation dedicated to her memory. Hi everyone! I Grew up in Vancouver, Wa. I joined the Army when I was 17. I Left for basic training to Ft. Lennerdwood, MO 2 weeks after graduating in 2001. I enlisted as a Military Police then 9/11 happened during my AIT. I then was given orders to Ft. Riley, KS. We went from Kansas to DC for about 7 months in support of Operation Nobel Eagle which was to guard the Pentagon during reconstruction. We then went back to Kansas to train and prepare for deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I deployed from March 03 to April 04. After deployment, I was laterally transferred to the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and took over as the NCOIC of the narcotics team for a year. I then got orders for a PCS to Korea April of 2005. I served there till January of 2006. I left Army even though I was a lifer at heart. I was pregnant and getting divorced so I came home back to WA. I fell in love with the medical field in Iraq and had training as a CLS (Combat life saver). It was the most fulfilling part of my short Army career. I left as a SGT (P) acting platoon SSG. I obtained my Associates Degree in Medical Assisting... hoping to become an RN one day. Having two little babies and being a single mom.... it was hard. Working 2 or 3 jobs, night school. And then no one would hire me for MA. I Went back to school for massage therapy and became a healer and believer in naturopathic medicine now. I own a mobile massage business and work in a natural health clinic as a massage therapist. I'm a home owner, I'm a single momma to 3 beautiful, amazing children. I've survived a lot of heart break, losing loved ones, attempted suicide of ex husband, military sexual trauma, PTSD.... etc. I'm an open book and would love nothing more than to help my brothers and sisters in arms, my fellow Veterans and fellow healers. An Interview with Captain Brockelmeyer and LTC Trey Lachicotte by Clark Bowden andEvan Muller Biographies: Cody Brockelmeyer enlisted in the Marine Corps in April of 2006, and served at the Legal Services Support Section in Okinawa, Japan where he served as NCOIC of the Pacific Regional Defense Counsel’s office. From 2009 to 2013, he served as Legal Management Chief for the Staff Judge Advocate to the Commandant of the Marine Corps. During this time, Sergeant Brockelmeyer deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, and completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland University College. In 2013, Staff Sergeant Brockelmeyer was accepted to the Enlisted Commissioning Program, attended OCS, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He was designated as a supply and logistics officer, he was assigned to Second Battalion, Seventh Marines in Twentynine Palms, CA. From 2014-2016, he deployed twice to the Middle East in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, and completed his Master of Business Administration degree from Northwest Christian University. In 2017, Captain Brockelmeyer was promoted to his current rank, and was assigned to his present duties as Marine Officer Instructor for the NROTC unit, University of Notre Dame. He currently teaches Fundamentals of Maneuver Warfare and Evolution of Warfare, and has completed a Doctor of Business Administration degree from Northcentral University. Capt. Brockelmeyer primarily works with the senior MIDN leadership, providing guidance to the BCO, BXO, and BOPS. Additionally, he teaches both the Fundamentals of Maneuver Warfare and the Evolution of Warfare classes. _____________________________________ LTC Trey Lachicotte is a 2000 graduate of the University of Tennessee, where he received two Bachelor of Science Degrees in Accounting and Finance. Upon Graduation, he received a commission in the Infantry. His civilian education also includes a Master of Art in Global and International Studies from the University of Kansas, as well as, a Master of Military Art and Science in Theater Operations from the US Army Command and General Staff College. SFC Preston Le Roy Schleinkofer, is a retired military veteran of 22 years and a retired federal officer with 27 years. His entire adult life has been in the service of this country and the protection of the American people. 179: Sheath Underwear Founder and Army Veteran Robert Patton SUBTITLE: Anatomical Isolation Pouch for Male Extremities On today’s episode, Joe Crane talks to Army veteran Robert Patton about his inspiration on the battlefield to create a new kind of underwear in Sheath Underwear Founder and Army Veteran Robert Patton. Robert Patton is loved and honored by all who know him. He is the nicest guy and takes care of people. It is because of this that he has so many team members willing to sacrifice their own ambitions to follow him on his journey to take an Idea he had on the battlefield to a reality where he sits as the Chairmen and of the Board and CEO of SHEATH Underwear. He wants to share his story and challenges so that others will know that they too can make something of themselves if they are so inclined or become a member of a team that has shared vision of success for all involved and thrive in that regard. Robert Patton Thrived in the Army In 2006, Robert was attending college and working as a payroll specialist. His debt was piling up and he needed to make a decision to continue with his education or try something different. The Army was offering bonuses and Robert decided the universe was trying to tell him something.   Robert joined the Army in 2006 during the War in Iraq. He immediately excelled in basic training and his AIT training. Within a year, he joined his unit as a 92 Mike, as a mortuary affairs specialist in Iraq. The job was an honorable one. Robert’s job was to ensure the soldiers were treated with honor, dignity and respect as they were returned home to their loved ones. It wasn’t a glamorous job but it was a necessary job Robert was proud to do. Educating Himself While serving, Robert focused on his education and accumulating Army credits to get rank. He was on the fast track. He made corporal within a year and a half and sergeant within two. Upon his second tour he was the NCOIC of his squad. It was a successful tour with all men returning.   “If you wait until your product is perfect to take it to market, you’ve waited too long” Robert Patton on making the leap from enlisted to entrepreneur Transitioning to Civilian Life It was a tough final two years serving in the Army. Robert got divorced, lost his house and was estranged from his daughter. Robert needed a positive focus. On the battlefield in the Iraq summer of 2008, Robert came up with and idea for underwear. Not your average underwear, but one with a unique design. It had an isolation pouch internally to separate your package from your thighs which can become uncomfortable. He had his “a-ha” in 2008 and in 2010 he began work on his version 0.0 product but it was going to be a long road. Robert was not discharged until 2012 and the first Kickstarter campaign was in 2013. Since that time, there have been manufacturing errors of an entire production order that had to be overcome. His late wife passed and Robert Patton is now a single father of a 16 year old daughter. John N. Valentine III, SFC (Ret) was born at Great Lakes ILL, Naval Hospital. His father was a Naval Officer; he grew up all over the United States. SFC Valentine entered the Army on 11 Sep 90 and retired after 20 years and 20 days of service on 30 Sep 2010; he attended Basic Training at Ft Leonardwood MO, where he also attended his first Advanced Individual Training or AIT as a 12B Combat Engineer.
