After New England brewers changed the world of IPA, other brewers took note of the style, based on its popularity the new flavors the style provided. But as all inventive brewers do, they didn't merely mimic the hazy IPAs coming from New England. Instead, they further re-interpreted IPA, trying new hops, new yeast strains and even adding some bitterness back to the beer to satisfy their local palates. Other brewers have pushed the style to be bigger with double, triple and even quintuple hazy IPAs.And while these brewers have advanced hazy IPA to new frontiers, the innovation isn't over. The future of hazy IPA is clear: There will continue to be new flavors, new ingredients, new brewing techniques and new interpretations of the most popular new beer style to emerge in decades. This Episode is Sponsored by:RahrBSGNeed ingredients and supplies that deliver consistent, high-quality beer? A special episode of the All About Beer Podcast with Em Sauter and Don Tse:The New England IPA (NEIPA) or Hazy IPA has come to dominate the beer landscape with most breweries having at least one (or sometimes entire portfolios) devoted to the beer style. But how did this happen? In 2013, a small group of breweries in New England, all of which were quite tiny at the time, began to brew a beer that took what we knew of as IPA (bitter, clear) and turned it on its head, creating a thickish, orange colored beer with tons of hop flavor but not a lot of bitterness. The world took notice and all of a sudden, the NEIPA was a worldwide phenomenon. Let's go back to the beginning and talk to two brewers from New England who were in the room when it happened, their experiences with the beginning of the trend and how it has changed their approach to brewing today. For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer.SponsorsStomp StickersStomp Stickers is a proud member of the Brewers Association that produces a wide variety of printed brewery products such as beerlabels, keg collars, coasters, beer boxes and much more. The most hyped new Quebec brewery of 2024 is absolutely Dunham, QC's Bad Bones, and these fellas have quite the origin story. Brothers Zack and Dave joined Cee and Nate to break down how they went from creating their Pourno travel YouTube channel to opening Bad Bones this past August, Zack's horrific and life-changing accident, their unique agreement with Brasserie Dunham that makes them a legit "brewery in a brewery", their future taproom plans, their approach to their Extra Hoppy Ales, how they handle distro, line-up culture and why they name their beers after bones. They got into five hazy bangers in the order they were released - Coma IPA, Clavicle Double IPA, Jaws of Life Double IPA collab with Le Ketch, Bedridden Double IPA and Pelvis Double IPA. This was such a great chat - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

Face of the brand (among other more important things) Troy Burtch joined Cee and Nate to chat about their approach to craft beer over the decades, how craft beer in Ontario has changed, the impact of Gen-Z drinking less alcohol, the importance of the LCBO to their strategy, the future of craft beer in Ontario with grocery and convenience, why American and WCIPAs are underrated, how creating experiences is the secret sauce and why they listen to the customer. They got into a gang of killer GLB brews - Premium Lager, Over My Dad Body Pilsner, Canuck Pale Ale, Octopus Wants To Fight IPA, Karmadelic IPA, VAVROOOM! New England IPA, and Haze Mama. We're back after a short hiatus and David celebrates by drinking Belleflower Finch and Thistle.David fell in love with Belleflower Brewing when he visited Portland, Maine, and was excited to see that they now distribute to Ohio. Belleflower Finch and Thistle is a dry hopped New England IPA, pouring pale golden hazy with aromas of big papaya, kiwi, pineapple, and stone fruit that will make you long for summer. The strong pale ale opens with flavors of grapefruit and other tropical citrus and stone fruit for a crispy taste that finishes with some light malt sweetness. We chat about Gary's recent trips and Abby even makes a cameo. On this week's podcast, we are joined by Monica Rothgery, Author of "Lessons from the Drive Thru" Monica shares her experience from being a frontline fast food manager at Taco Bell, all the way up to being the COO of KFC, and the leadership lessons she has learned along the way. I share a glass of (No) Santa New England IPA from Sloop Brewing Co. from East Fiskhill, NY.About Monica:Thirty years ago, Monica was a Restaurant General Manager for a Taco Bell outside of Chicago where she struggled to understand the essence of leadership. It was a constant uphill climb. Frustrated, she couldn't understand how to make her team care about customers, or even want to show up for work. Turnover was high and morale was low. She missed sales goals, turnover targets and of course, profit. One very late night, after a particularly challenging day, she sat on the floor of her dining room. As the tears of frustration fell, she made a vow: “IF I ever get promoted out of the restaurant, I will spend my life trying to make life easier for managers.”Monica did get promoted and over time discovered the secrets to achieving great results and building great teams. Along the way she studied human behavior, organizational effectiveness, instructional design and business strategy. She analyzed great front-line leader behaviors to find common threads. She discovered the essentials to becoming a great business leader and achieving results: how to…· Embrace who you are at work· Make your mark on the lives of others· Figure out what is yours to do· Become the leader that no one ever leaves.Monica went from running one restaurant to leading 4000 restaurants as the COO of KFC in the United States. Today, Monica continues her passion to empower frontline leaders through keynotes, coaching and workshops.About Monica's Book:Lessons from the Drive-Thru: Real life Wisdom for Frontline LeadersLeading a team is hard. There is immense pressure to deliver results while leading a team of unique, diverse individuals. As a Taco Bell manager, Monica tried muscling her way through, working extremely hard, only to produce mediocre results. Over time, she learned that her job was not to run the business but to lead the team. Once leadership became the focus, turnover decreased, the customer experience improved, and the business grew.In Lessons from the Drive-Thru: Real Life Wisdom for Frontline Leaders, Monica uses stories from behind the counter to illustrate the power of true servant leadership. Both new and experienced leaders will learn how to:Shift the focus from “me” to “we” and watch the team thrive while the business grows.Discover the power of using uniqueness to lead with ease, authenticity, and vulnerability.Realize the potential to impact the lives of those of team members.Anticipate the unexpected and persevere with grace.

Ten years into the rise of hazy IPA, the brewing world knows far more about how to make this challenging yet enduringly popular style—yet the deeper we push, the more we realize how much more we have to learn. For this extended episode of the podcast, we got the gang from last year's West Coast IPA Now! episodes back together to discuss hazy IPA, along with a respected East Coast voice in the hazy IPA conversation. Steve Parker of Fidens (https://www.fidensbrewing.com) joins Evan Price of Green Cheek (https://www.greencheekbeer.com), Kelsey McNair of North Park (https://www.northparkbeerco.com), and special guest host Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River (https://www.russianriverbrewing.com) as they dissect varying approaches to medal-winning, crowd-pleasing hazy IPA, including: choosing soft water over more chloride-heavy approaches different strategies around pH to balance flavor, function, and food safety selecting malt for color and flavor contributions using adjuncts such as unmalted wheat, chit malt, oats with husks, and more, to build pale color yet stable haze feeding bigger fermentations to offset low efficiency mashes the impact that certain hop varieties have on haze development and stability “coolpooling” with concentrated pellets and knockout hopping with advanced hop products promoting biotransformation during active fermentation without dry hops in the tank double-batching over two days while under-pitching and over-aerating closing the tank several days before terminal, and dry hopping under pressure the impact of pellet density what to look for in certain varieties at hop selection balancing bitterness and final gravity And more. Past isn't necessarily prologue for today's lager brewers, but it certainly is at Goldfinger Brewing (https://goldfingerbrewing.com) in Downers Grove, Illinois. A family history of brewing lager and manufacturing equipment for brewers in Poland and Czechia was just the kick that Tom Beckmann needed to pursue his dream of building a small, contemporary, lager-focused brewery. Now, as the brewery undertakes its next expansion, Beckmann is committed to widening the lager discourse, to showcasing the potential of both European and domestic ingredients in lager brewing, and to embracing flavor and character across a range of different lager styles. In this episode, Beckmann discusses: building on his family brewing history in Poland and Czechia designing and constructing a brewhouse for lager brewing step-mashing and decoction strategies for various pale lagers using sterile air rather than pure oxygen to reduce yeast stress cereal cooking vs. gelatinized adjuncts for certain lagers blending domestic and imported pils malt for the best flavor, performance, and price the tactile experience of different malts selecting Tettnanger hops for pils and Hallertauer Mittlefrüh for helles the fundamentals of Polish pils the American Zoigl project in conjunction with Live Oak, Urban Chestnut, and others And more. Based in Portland, Oregon, Sam Zermeño is the brewer behind Brujos—a nomadic brand that's given him the opportunity to make some intensely flavored, highly regarded beers with friends and favorite brewers from around the country. Yet behind the acclaim and heavy-metal imagery is a mind of real technical know-how and experience. Previously an R&D brewer at Portland's Great Notion, his accomplishment there include a GABF gold medal last year for their Feniks grodziskie. Nor was that his first GABF gold; in 2018, he won for a hazy double IPA brewed while at Black Market in Temecula, California. Now, Zermeño is embarking on the next phase of Brujos, taking over a now-closed brewhouse which he's transforming into a dark church worthy of the heavy brand. In this episode, he talks about brewing hazy IPA, with glimpses into his process that include: building inefficient grain bills with more wheat and oats than barley brewing with a thick mash, treated gently finishing gravities that pull the most out of heavy hop loads boosting calcium chloride drying out triple IPA for balance managing giant hop loads And more. BEERS: The boys are on the move again! Will is back from his southern excursion of Charleston and rates Maser, a New England IPA that held its own despite its southern geography. We debate how NEIPA's from the south should be treated - should they be held in the same regard we hold them from our home states? Jake, fresh off trips to St. Louis and Louisville, had a fair share of beer this past week, and rates Upland Brewing's Barrel-Aged Peach Sour Ale he had at their taproom in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Honorable mentions go to Bud Select, fresh on tap at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, and a Charleston favorite in Edmunds Oast. BUSINESS (30:00): AI: everyone's favorite topic. But this year, it's becoming less of a buzzword and more of a reality. So, how can we use AI for our advantage now, and how are some of the biggest brands across the world using it? We bring in Christopher Parisi, President at Trailblaze Marketing and host of the AI Wave podcast, to break it all down for us. We talk about everything from ChatGPT, to "Terminator-level" capabilities, to replacing post-production with AI. Chris also takes us through his journey of how he got to Bryant, a key moment in his life that led him to pivot from accounting to study marketing, and his work with the RI Small Business Coalition to unlock millions of dollars in small business aid. BALLS: Money is flying around in the sports at an unprecedented rate, and the most recent events are no exception. Kylian Mbappe, French soccer phenom, was offered nearly $1 billion to negotiate with Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal. Justin Herbert became the highest paid quarterback in NFL history at over $52 million per year. Jaylen Brown signed a super-max extension of $60 million, accomplishing the same feat across the entire NBA. What is going on and why is money being dished out so fast? In this episode Bob and I stay on the IPA train, and turn our attention to the Hazy IPA. Emphasizing hop aroma and flavor without bracing bitterness, the New England IPA leans heavily on late and dry hopping techniques to deliver a bursting juicy, tropical hop experience. The skillful balance of technique and ingredient selection, often including the addition of wheat or oats, lends an alluring haze to this popular take on the American IPA. Examples of this style: 1. Treehouse – Julius 2. Masthead Brewing Company – Hazy Headlines 3. The Alchemist – Heady Topper 4. Crooked Pecker – Max went to Prague ABV: 6-9% IBUs: 25-60 Color: 3-7 Serving Temp: 45-55F Serving Pressure: 7-13 PSI Beer Representation: Tickling the Ivories – Hoof Hearted 7.2% ABV N/A IBUs Beer Description: “Totally dusted,” started Pablo Cruz. “And I can truly say I've never felt better. Posers often overcomplicate it, but I've found all truths associated with the act are easily encapsulated in a few words. Skiing is a dance, and the mountain always leads.” Re-tune that Keytar boiz. We're bustin Rig out of Ski Jail! Citra, Calypso, and Comet carve a trail full o' tropics complimented in full by a dual-duty hazemaker. Is it juice? From concentrate? It's that time of year again folks. If you're new to the show, every year, I get together with my friends from ABA Inside Track for a Year in Review show, and this year was no different. In this podcast, we went over a handful of happenings in the world of Applied Behavior Analysis. In this episode, we covered: The changes in leadership of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and the Association for Professional Behavior Analysis. What shows from each of our pods resonated with our respective audiences. Whether West Coast or New England IPAs are best (c'mon, is this even worth talking about?), including an impromptu short history of American Craft Beer. Other questions from the audience. The passings of Tameka Meadows, Beth Sulzer-Azaroff, David Jarmolowicz, and Dale Bretthower. With regard to the latter, I would like to say that I wish we had more time to elaborate on the contributions of these behavior analysts. We were pressed for time, not only for recording, but also in terms of show preparation, and I apologize if that segment of the show fails to live up to the standards you've come to expect from Behavioral Observations. We also fielded a great question from long time listener, Penny Holloway. Again, time did not allow us to do her question justice, but if you listen to the very end of the show, I do my best to address it, and I hope you get a chance to check that out. Huge thanks again for the ABA Inside Track crew, along with Alan Haberman for being such great conversational partners. I look forward to sharing more fun discussions with you in 2023 and beyond!!! Here are the links to some of the things we discussed: Inside JABA 13 (John Borrero and Linda LeBlanc). Inside JABA 2 (Big Idea Papers). Session 205 (Matt Brodhead/Ethics and the use of Punishment).
