It all started for John by being curious about the origin of his name and then learning about the man after whom he was named. Throughout his research John discovered an artifact that told the story of a World War I soldier and stories of an ancestor tangibly involved with the growth of Melbourne. Finding personal connections with world and regional events as helped the study of history be more meaningful. In this episode John shares:How his research journey began with an internet search of his nameThe story of a journal that survived World War I even though its author did notWhat it means to him to know one of his ancestors played role in Melbourne’s history About John:John has been a performer for nearly 20 years and has done a mixture of work both professional and amateur. What are those things that Christianity - or Christians - are NOT? What are those things that are often confused for the essentials of the faith but are actually of secondary importance? How do heaven, politics, and being a good person become more important than following Jesus now and with the proper balance? We talk about eight things Christianity is not with Laurien Hook and Dan Aikens.

Michael is the Senior Partner at Box of Crayons, a company that helps organizations do less Good Work and more Great Work. He’s also the author of several books, including The Coaching Habit and Do More Great Work. Michael has written for or been featured in numerous publications including Business Insider, Fast Company, Forbes, The Globe & Mail and The Huffington Post. Favorite Success Quote “If you’re going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don’t even start.” ~Charles Bukowski Key Points 1. Forget All About Doing Good Work and Focus on Great Work There are only three kinds of work. Bad work, good work, and great work. Ironically, the type of work that is most deadly to your dreams and ambitions is not bad work. Because bad work is obvious. It’s the kind of work that creates a visceral reaction each time you are forced to engage in it. You know what I am talking about. That work you try and outsource as soon as you receive it. That work that leaves you anxious and exhausted each time it pops up in your inbox. That work that requires no talent, skill, or ability, simply an ability to switch off your brain and put your nose to the grindstone. And most importantly, that work that does nothing to push you closer to your ultimate vision. You know bad work when you see it, which is why it’s not truly a danger to your dreams. Good work, on the other hand, is an innocuous killer of greatness. Because good work (again, as the name implies) is good. You enjoy good work, you can profit from good work, and good work leaves you with a feeling of satisfaction and fulfillment. But there’s a disconnect. Good work is often what we use to fill our time and distract ourselves from great work we know we should be doing. Good work is that high-paying freelance project that distracts your focus from your new startup. Or that client you keep on retainer who doesn’t push your abilities or stretch you. Good work can even be a relationship, a friendship, or a career that is blowing you off course from your life’s mission. Good work will not steal your soul and crush you underfoot like bad work will. Instead, it will ensnare you and keep you playing the game of life at a small level. So it’s time for you to decide. Do you want to do good work that will make you a living? Or do you want to do great work that will make you a legend? 2. Learn to Understand the True Problem Men are problem solvers. This isn’t some sort of gender-based stereotype, it’s simply how we are biologically hard-wired. But the unique problem with being a problem solver is that it can often lead to impatience and unnecessary haste. Which, especially when it pertains to leadership and management, can be fatal to your efficiency. After all, how can you effectively solve a problem if you haven’t fully defined the problem you are trying to solve? For example, let’s say that you receive a call from a long-time client who is responsible for more than 25% of your bottom line. As soon as you pick up the phone, the client regretfully informs you that your contract is being terminated and when you inquire as to why he simply responds by saying “We no longer need your services.” At this point, you could make assumptions about the problem, politely hang up, and face the consequences of losing such a big contract. Or, you could ask a simple question, “What’s the real challenge here?” By diving deeper instead of simply assuming that the client is lost, you might find out that they recently underwent significant budget cuts and don’t feel that they can afford your retainer. And while you may or may not be able to renegotiate an agreement, you have stepped further into understanding what the real challenge is. The next time that you are presented with a challenging situation, even an internal one, I challenge you to pause, take a step back, and ask “What’s the real challenge here?” If you are feeling unfulfilled in your work and you’re thinking about quitting your job, stop and ask “What’s the real challenge”? Are you bored and unchallenged? Do you feel stuck? Do you feel underpaid? Talk to your manager and see if you can take on more challenging projects, move into a different division, or negotiate a raise. However, if you feel like your talents and abilities genuinely need to be applied to a different endeavor, then follow through and quit with a full understanding of the challenge you need to surmount. If your marriage is on the verge of collapse, pause and ask yourself, “What’s the real challenge here?”. Are you and your partner simply struggling to connect? Do you feel the need for more time alone and with friends? Do you feel that you have lost touch with what made you fall in love with one another? These issues (although difficult) are all fixable. But maybe the real struggle is that you were married too young and your goals are no longer in alignment. Maybe the solution is to part amicably and move towards your own individual purposes. Whatever problems you are facing in your life, take a step back and figure out what the real challenge is. Sometimes, your assumptions will be correct. But more often than not, you will find that the real challenge is much deeper and much more nuanced than you originally thought. 3. Knowledge is Never the Issue I want you to imagine that you are walking through a dark alleyway late at night in your hometown. You feel a tingle at the base of your spine, and when you turn around, there is a man with a gun pointed at your head. He doesn’t want your money, he doesn’t want your watch, in fact… He doesn’t give a damn about any of your valuables. All he wants is the answer to four questions. “What can I do to become healthier? What can I do to make and save more money? What can I do to attract more women and love into my life? And what can I do to become a stronger grounded man?” Would you be able to respond? If you have been listening to this show for any appreciable amount of time, then I can guarantee that you could. “Lift heavy weights for 5 hours a week and only eat real food. Start a side hustle, save away every extra penny, and then invest in some sort of asset like a real estate deal. Talk to five new women every day, be genuinely interested, and be authentic with them. Start journaling, meditating, and pushing yourself to embrace adversity.” Boom! He puts the gun down and you are free to go. Now, I know that the above scenario is implausible, to say the least, but my point in sharing this is that you know what you need to do. I doubt that the above responses were new to most of you. You already knew how to become healthier, wealthier, attract better relationships, and become more grounded. And if you don’t, then a short glance through the Knowledge for Men archives will solve that problem once and for all. For 99% of you reading this, however, knowledge is not your problem. You know everything that you need to do. So why aren’t you doing it? Why aren’t you taking action? Why aren’t you moving forward? Before you get upset and start casting blame and recoiling in defense, pause… And ask yourself, “What’s the real challenge here?” What is it in your life that is stopping you from moving forwards? Why aren’t you taking action? Why aren’t you doing what you need to do? Instead of judging yourself and trapping yourself in a vicious cycle of frustration, shame, and inaction, take a step back and analyze your inaction. If lack of knowledge isn’t your problem… What is? 4. What Do You Want? Seriously… What do you want? What do you want? Not “What do mommy and daddy want?” Not “What does society want?” Not “What people tell you that you should want?” What do you want? It’s funny to me how few men will actually take the time to uncover the answer to this question. To our knowledge, we only get one shot at this thing called life. We only have one chance to live the lives that we want. So why the hell do we go about living our lives based on other people’s values and desires? If you only have one chance to live your life and achieve your dreams, then why would you pursue a career that makes you miserable? Why would you marry someone you don’t truly love? Why would you live one second of your life out of alignment with your deeper calling and purpose? Ask yourself every single week, month, and year, “What do I want?” Don’t filter what comes up, don’t judge it, just embrace it. Once you know what you truly want… Go out and get it.

Despite the many challenges my illness presents, my life is very purposeful. There are times when I experience depression, but I'm generally a positive person. What would make living and moving in the world easier for you? *It would make my life easier if we could all end the stigma on invisible/chronic illness and mental health. I wish I could talk more openly about these topics without the fear of making everyone around me uncomfortable.Do you have any life hacks? *Active decision-making: Periodically throughout the day, I check in with myself to see how I'm feeling physically/emotionally and I make conscious choices about how to use my time/energy. I weigh the pros and cons of each potential decision and select one accordingly. Candlelight hour: An hour before bed, I turn off all artificial sources of light and only use candlelight. (Quick science note: artificial light is more blue-shifted in the light spectrum, which suppresses the production of melatonin. Fire, on the other hand, is more red-shifted, which supports the production of melatonin.) Weighted pen: In the past, I've experienced severe arm pain and have had difficulty using a pen or pencil. Solution: I created a weighted pen by wrapping electrical tape around 4 nails. That way, I can let gravity do more of the work and I don't have to press down as hard. What kind of support do you get from family or friends? *I live with my parents. They help me with cooking, cleaning, and other household chores. I have leaned on my sister and friends for emotional support when needed, which isn't very often anymore.Have you ever had someone, or a medical professional, not believe you have an invisible illness because of your appearance and if so are there any examples that stand out? *In 2014, the anesthesiologist told me that he deals with patients who have much worse pain than me and that I should simply return to work. For the first 3.5 years of my illness, my parents and grandparents were either skeptical or in denial of the existence of my symptoms. How has your chronic illness affected your relationships? *Before becoming ill, I loved group gatherings with friends and meeting new people. Since developing my illness, I can't handle large groups of people. I mostly get together with friends 1-on-1 and do low key things like go for a walk, drink tea, sit around and talk, or play board games. Is there anything you are afraid to tell people in your life? *Not really. I've talked openly with my loved ones and on my podcast about how I used to experience suicidal ideation. I don't shy away from difficult conversations if I think that doing so could be fruitful. What is your best coping mechanism? *Walking in natureWhat are you the most concerned about and the most hopeful for in the future? *I'm most concerned about whether or not I'll be able to return to a full-time career, live an independent life, and have children (if I decide that's what I'd like to do). I'm hopeful that, over time, I'll find a deeper sense of purpose in my work as I become more involved with advocacy efforts for persons with chronic illness and disabilities. Is there anything you want to make sure we talk about during the interview? How much money do you actually have in your bank account? How do you and the people in your family really feel right now? Really. What's really going on in your professional environment? In your personal environment? Not generalizing or exaggerating. Most people have a tendency, me too, to generalize. Everybody's leaving. It's so awful. Everybody's leaving the company, what do you mean? Everybody's leaving. It's so awful. Everybody's leaving the company? What do you mean? Well, Sally said she thought she might want to get a new career. And over 35 years of my consulting and coaching practices, I've often seen, And over 35 years of my consulting and coaching practices, I've often seen, all I have to do is to start to address, what is the real current reality? And there are lots of ways to do that, but I would highly recommend you examine whether you're running any exaggerations or generalizations. That may be creating more pressure than you need. What's really true? What do you know what's really true? What do you know is actually really true? Not "What do you think is true?", or "What do people say is true?" But, what do you *know* it actually really true? It gives you a grounded base to actually make decisions from. I could spin on that for a long time, but let me just say if that rings any of your bells at all, notice whether you're generalizing and exaggerating. And if so, stop it! Just say what's really true right now? Because you need to know what's the current reality so that you can then move from a ground base of reality. Not from some expectation of that, or generalization of that, or exaggeration of that.

Take a journey through history that leads to today’s theory of quantum gravity and the modern physicist’s view of the universe. Do time and space exist? What about reality, does it exist? These are the questions that theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli has spent his life exploring. Beginning with the scholars of ancient Greece, Rovelli takes us on a journey throughout history and shows us how our understanding of reality has changed over time. Digging into the discoveries and theories made by Democritus, Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and even his own work in quantum gravity, Rovelli seeks to unify quantum mechanics and general relativity. Through Reality is Not What it Seems, you’ll explore a world where space is made up of tiny grains, where time disappears, and where a large portion of the universe has yet to be discovered.
The Julien Dubuque International Film Festival made “The Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World” list by MovieMaker Magazine in 2013. I am proud to State that I had a part in that at the ground level as one of the people who got it off the ground. Here’s the first step we took to get it done: Well, first things first! I was approached by Michael Coty and Christopher (Kulovitz at the time) Wydra. These gents were the founders of Get Reel, a student film festival. They wanted to know if I could help them put together a film festival. The quick answer was yes! I was desperate to bring more opportunities for serious, professional actors to our town and I knew this was a very good way to make that happen. It’s Not What you Know, It’s WHO You Know My drive alone wasn’t going to get the job done. The first thing I did was introduce the gentlemen to a production company I had been making commercials, doing live events, and acting in industrial films and voice overs with. I figured, they were going to need someone who not only knew how to create an event but also would document and film the process for opening night. Those folks said YES! The next persons we had to get involved was a local couple with relations to a name actor. A name actor that was from the town was ideal. Offering the name actor an Honorable Chair position on the Festival was the couples’ idea and it went over swimmingly. Kate Mulgrew who plays “Red” on Orange is the New Black became our Honorable Chair and because she was from Dubuque, audiences came out in droves to welcome her back to their community. But, How do I Do This? In the custom of providing a step-by-step plan for actors who want to Make a Living Acting Anywhere, the two things under the one heading are enough to get started. Steps 1 and 2 Production Company Involvement email, call, or door knock local production companies in your area and find out if they would be interested in starting a film festival with you. Here are some clues as to what’s in it for them: a) Advertising and Marketing in their Provided Services, b) an enrapt audience watching their professional work and therefore opening the doors to much more work c) relationships with professional actors and voice artists who can make their work even better for their own clients! Name Actor (from your town or closeby) Involvement With Google and IMDB readily at your fingertips, this is probably the easiest step in the process. Go start searching. And, this is only if you don’t already know of someone who is an actor who was a member of your community. Most people know this! But, if you don’t, here are the search terms I’d use to get started: Actors from…. ________born actors “Which known actors are from_________” etc… I look forward to seeing what you put on! Please, leave a message, comment, subscribe, share and like for more. Have questions? Bring it on. As we start a new year, our thoughts turn towards the year ahead with all its plans and resolutions. And yet of course it is irrational to make this complete distinction between December and January; in fact, the more you think about it, the more you realise that everything about time is strangely slippery. The slippery nature of time is something that preoccupies Carlo Rovelli, a theoretical physicist who has worked in Italy and the United States and who is currently directing the quantum research group at the Centre for Theoretical Physics in Marseille. His books “Seven Brief Lessons on Physics”, “Reality is Not What it Seems” and “The Order of Time” have become international best-sellers, outselling “Fifty Shades of Grey”. In Private Passions, Carlo Rovelli talks to Michael Berkeley about how music has helped him think about time, and how memory of the past and expectation of the future come into constant play when we listen to music: “We don’t live in the present, we live a little bit in the future and a little bit in the past – we live in a clearing in the forest of time.” He looks back to his childhood, growing up in Verona, and hearing Vivaldi played every week in the local church. He discusses Philip Glass’s “Einstein on the Beach”, a work he admits he likes particularly for its title. He thinks about how Mozart represents the end of time in his “Dies Irae”, music he loves to listen to at full volume when his partner is out of the house. Other choices include Schubert, Arvo Pärt, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and the Bach cantata he discovered as a teenager that still astonishes him. We've been told that it's insane to keep doing the same things and hope for a different result... While this MIGHT be true, maybe it's NOT the same EXTERNAL THING that is the structure of insanity, maybe it's INTERNAL. Einstein stated, "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of THINKING we used when we created them." If you're not getting the results you want, just suppose for a moment that it's NOT WHAT you're doing that's causing your downfall... it's HOW you're doing it...
Since 1970, Rob Reider has actively engaged in many holistic health modalities - as a student, teacher, guide, and practitioner. He now coaches, inspires, and mentors others to awaken from dogma and programming to an unlimited possibility of living! The essence of these ideas is express in his book “Life Is Not What You Think - Permission To Go Out Of Your Mind” I’ve personally read the book and it has really transformed the way that I think about things. I was lucky enough to spend some time with Rob and do a coaching session with him and I can speak from experience that I have truly felt the transformation. That is why I am so excited to introduce Rob, who has graciously offered his time to share his story and dive into some of the lessons that he uncovers in his book. In this episode, Rob takes us on his journey through life and talks about the various teachers and mentors that he’s worked with along the way. Not What you Choose to Work on Its What You Choose Not To (LA 1098) Transcript: Steve J.B.: Steve and Jill here. Jill Dewit: Hello. Steve J.B.: Welcome to the Land Academy show entertaining land investment talk. I'm Steven Jack Butala- Jill Dewit: And Jill Dewit broadcasting from sunny Southern California. Steve J.B.: Today, Jill and I talk about it's not what you choose to work on, it's what you choose not to work on. Jill Dewit: I love this topic. Steve J.B.: Before we get into it, let's take a question. This is a little bit, kind of a new setup for us, so we're trying to work it out. Jill Dewit: I know. Do you want me to go print out some stuff? That would have been better. Steve J.B.: Well, we can do it next show. You know what? This is perfect. You can see, if you're watching this- Jill Dewit: Us fail? We're failing. Steve J.B.: Yes, you can watch us fail. Jill Dewit: We're failing right now. Steve J.B.: Then next week, this is Friday. So next week, it'll be a little bit more put together. Jill Dewit: Exactly. Steve J.B.: But, this is how progress happens. Jill Dewit: Yes, we have a teleprompter, and we can't reach the teleprompter, so this is how we're failing. So, Steven has to lean way over to adjust the teleprompter. Not that we need a teleprompter, none of this is really scripted, but the question, I need to be able to read the question, I do not have that memorized. Steve J.B.: We'll do that on paper next time. Jill Dewit: All right, and I will fix this. Steve J.B.: Doesn't stop you from looking good though, Jill. Jill Dewit: Aw, thank you. I'll just sit back here and just relax. Steve J.B.: What's different from that from the other time? Jill Dewit: I'm going to get little table here, we're going to put our drinks and stuff, but that's going to be fun. Steve J.B.: Excellent. Jill Dewit: Cool. All right, go for it. Steve J.B.: Before we get into it, let's take a question posted by one of our members on the landinvestors.com online community. It's free. Jill Dewit: Okay. Skylar asks, "We have all heard about deal funding, but is anyone interested in doing transactional funding? Thanks." Did anybody reply to this yet? Steve J.B.: No. Jill Dewit: Okay. Steve J.B.: And that's why I wanted to personally reply to it. Jill Dewit: What are your thoughts? Steve J.B.: I honestly don't understand the question, and this is a big topic for me. Jill Dewit: Okay. Steve J.B.: This actually taps into what this topic is today. Jill and I have now the luxury of choosing what we work on and what we don't. As entrepreneurs, that's the very definition of, in my opinion, succeeding or not succeeding. One of the things that I'm choosing to work on in a big bad way is funding. I talked about it a little bit, I think on a couple of shows ago or earlier in the week, if we had $100 million to spend, we could spend it and probably double it, or at least throw off a 40 to 50% return on it very quickly. Jill Dewit: Right. Steve J.B.: And so, funding is a big deal. Since we had this live event, and just because of the show, we're getting a lot of people reaching out to us, offering us funding. We haven't found that perfect fit yet for some reason. There's a lot of people out there with a lot of money, but there's very few people that understand land. Jill Dewit: Right. That's true. Steve J.B.: I'm not sure why or how land got this reputation. It gets lobed into commercial real estate, and commercial real estate by the very nature of it is treated on capitalization rates, which heavily rely on rent-

In this episode we ask - how do you make decisions that let you see beyond your every day inbox, busy work, and demands of others? We uncover that there are huge mismatches between how you think you spend your time and how you actually spend it. We share you can deal with the fear, and the reality, of disappointing other people and not meeting their expectations and we share one simple strategy - in 30 minutes - that can help you reclaim control of your time with our guest Laura Vanderkam. Laura Vanderkam is the author of several time management and productivity books. Her TED talk titled “How To Gain Control of Your Free Time” has been viewed over 5 million times and she is the co-host of the podcast Best of Both Worlds. Her work has appeared in publications including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, and Fortune. While people are happy to get information, they remember it much better when its in the form of storiesYou should make time in your life for what’s important. Time is a choice, you’re ALWAYS choosing how you spend your time. You HAVE to choose how to spend your time, whether you want to or notWhat people often miss, especially when you try to be everything to everyone, there are tradeoffs and opportunity costs to EVERYTHING - even if you don’t see it Saying yes to something is, by definition, saying no to something else. Every choice to do one thing is is, by definition, a choice to NOT do something else. Have you ever binged an entire book or TV series in a short amount of time? That’s proof that you have more time than you think, you’re just not spending it how you necessarily want to. How do you make decisions that let you see beyond your every day inbox, busy work, and demands of others?Envision your ideal future, and start to bring those things into your life. Your priorities should inform your scheduling choices. It’s that simple. And yet so few people do it. You must consciously choose to invest time in the things that matter to you. If you don’t your time will be TAKEN AWAY FROM YOU, by someone else’s priorities. It’s not a priority just because someone else thinks is it important or because society at large thinks it’s important. This doesn’t have to be huge chunks of time, even an hour or two a week can be transformational.Challenge yourself to find 30 mins a day, or 3.5hrs a week - of extra time per week. Anyone can achieve this. This can apply to both your PERSONAL life and to your professional life - too often we neglect one or the other or think time management only Is the bigger challenge to figure out your own priorities or just to make time for them? What questions or activities can you do to figure out what’s most important to you and where you SHOULD spend your time? How do you deal with the fear, and the reality, of disappointing other people and not meeting their expectations? What were you thinking about on today’s date, two years ago?Likewise, whatever is keeping you up now probably won’t matter in two yearsTrying to manage your time without measuring it is like losing weight without paying attention to your diet and exercise habits. There are HUGE mismatches between how you THINK you spend your time, and how you actually spend it. By doing a time audit you start to realize huge opportunities in your schedule and where you are spending your time.Often times the small chunks of time here and there start to add up - and don’t register on how you’re spending your time. David Bransky, Developmental Alphabioticist Alphabiotics Just like computers, when things start overheating, we need to reboot and reset in order to function most effectively. (Or function at all.) Alphabiotics is an alignment process that aims to do just that: Reset the body into its pure state of balance and relaxation. The Alignment process is accomplished with you lying on your back with your head at the high end of the alignment table. The process involves a unique and invigorating movement of the head and is accomplished within less than a minute. Instantly, the brain hemispheres integrate, overly tight and tense muscles relax, weak muscles strengthen, hips and shoulders level, legs become even, and balance is once again restored. The process is gentle and easy. As we know, stress plays a huge role in chronic illness. Do I consider alphabiotics a modality that can support you in healing from chronic illness? Absolutely. As always, listen to your body, ask a doctor or someone you trust, but, as I say in this episode, healing comes in many forms, I just do what works. Alphabiotics WORKS for a lot of people. Discussed in this Episode: What Alphabiotics is and is notWhat stress is and how we can deal with itHow alphabiotics hits a reset buttonWhat happens to our bodies when we are stressedEpigeneticsWhat an alignment looks like and feels like. The process from beginning to end. Alpha state vs. beta statePresence within daily conversationsSlowing down and staying with the bodyMy skepticism and fears Alphabiotic myths: Debunking and explaining common beliefs about the processFloat tanks Resources Mentioned: David's StudioDavid's instagramSlowing Down to the Speed of LifeFloat Tanks Weekly Challenge: A practice of presence: For the next two weeks, we have been challenged to put our phones down, look our colleagues and friends in the eyes and ask how the heck they are. That's it, my friend! We simply practice intimacy through presence— we notice how uncomfortable this does or does not make us. We soften our bodies and stand straight up with our arms at our sides—no freaking walls. I know, it sounds simple, but start paying attention and see how often you're able to have that type of interaction. Keep me posted on Instagram @sheajackie. I'm excited for this one! Basically, people need to be nicer to each other.Do you have any life hacks? *I probably have too many, but my biggest one is if I can't figure something out myself I ask for help be it filling out paperwork or figuring out how to get myself up on time in the mornings. A long winter of discontent and division feels like it’s settling in.The latest political poll is evidence that we’re evenly split and also that truth is in the eye of the beholder. The fact that National has held steady and still scores at 45 percent is taken by some to show that the party still has a legitimate claim to authority. But Labour is within the margin of error at 42 percent. Add on the Greens and you have a 48 percent. A 3 percent margin left over right. And their supporters claim the moral authority. But again that’s within the margin of error. I think it’s only fair to say we are evenly split. The real winner is New Zealand First who keeps on pulling a 5 percent. It keeps them being the judge jury and executioner. I think it’s also fair to say that the predicted collapse of the coalition is still a ways away and the rise of National is a ways away too as their leader fails to excite the middle. So we’re stuck. There is no clear winner. The only differentiating factor is your opinion. How you feel. And depending on how you feel and what opinions you read is the defining trend of the age, which is why logic and facts are the victims. We are in the age of propaganda. Some say socialism is on the rise. Others say this is the age of strongman autocracy. And both sides are just as sure of their truth and the other sides delusions as each other.I was struck by this finely balanced division and war of words and ideas and propaganda reading a piece by Business writer Liam Dann in the weekendLiam was struggling to decide whether we’re heading towards an economic meltdown or not. Whether the drop in business confidence is based on economic truths or notWhat he said was that reality is complex and seldom fits easily into party political divides. And when there is political heat in an issue it gets passionate. And when people argue with passion their ability to process evidence from both sides of an argument seems to diminish. And science has proven that humans create their own reality. In other words, you’re biased. I am biased. He’s biased. Everyone is biased. Yet despite this, politicians and their party faithful cling to the belief that their opponents are biased and they are not.And in a time of even balance between ideologies then that’s a recipe for shouting, yelling and accusations.Liam finished his piece, saying we are all stuck in this life together. And it is short and nobody gets out alive. Spending it feeling angry because someone said something you don't like isn't worth it.Very true. But it is fair to say this winter of disagreement isn’t getting any shorter

Workout because you love your body, not because you hate it. Dr. Beth McGilley joins us in discussing this sometimes complicated relationship between exercise and our body image. Dr.McGilley shares her knowledge on eating disorders, exercise and the recovery process and the difference between mindless and mindful exercise. What is dysfunctional exercise? We need to look at the quality of the exercise continuum: what is the driven quality, is it ritualized and rigid, is it only done to management negative mood and weight. Mindful Exercise is a way we can reconnect to our body and find joy in movement vs. it being a punishment. Dr. Beth McGilley shares her exercise mantras to help in recovery and changing that relationship So You Know She Is Legit... Dr. Beth Hartman McGilley, is a Clinical Associate Professor, University of Kansas School of Medicine—Wichita, is a psychologist in private practice, specializing in the treatment of eating and related disorders, body image, athletes, trauma, and grief. (Carmen Cool, 2014) Ours is a culture equally obsessed with eating as with dieting, and exercise is extolled as the ultimate elixir for both. It is thus no surprise that exercise, once considered simply for its physical and psychological benefits, is now a multibillion dollar industry which promises to shape up the body of our lives as well. While the virtues of physical activity are indisputable, the tolls of dysfunctional exercise are equally noteworthy (Calogero & Pedrotty-Stump, 2010). Although this potentially deadly impact is most obvious in those who suffer with an eating disorder (ED), dysfunctional exercise is ubiquitous. Prevalence rates range from 33-80% depending on the definition of dysfunctional exercise used and the population studied (clinical vs. nonclinical samples). Within the ED population, dysfunctional exercise is associated with increased psychological distress and psychopathology, longer inpatient stays and higher rates of relapse (Naylor, Mountford & Brown, 2011). The empirical findings on dysfunctional exercise are difficult to interpret due to discrepancies in terms and definitions used to describe it, variability in subject samples and settings, assessment measurements and length of follow up. At least ten different terms have been cited in the literature to describe exercise performed to the physical and/or psychological detriment of an individual (activity anorexia, exercise anorexia, anorexia athletica, obligatory exercise, compulsive exercise, exercise addiction, exercise dependence, exercise abuse, excessive exercise, dysfunctional exercise). Some terms imply psychopathology (compulsive exercise) while others do not (obligatory exercise). A consensus definition is vitally needed for effective prevention, identification of those at risk, and informed interventions for those already suffering from dysfunctional exercise (Meyer & Taranis, 2011). In this article, dysfunctional exercise will be briefly described and the concepts of “intuitive exercise” (Hieber & Berrett, 2003) and “mindful exercise” (Calogero & Pedrotty-Stump, 2010) will be offered as new approaches to physical activity, both for those who compulsively exercise and for those who anxiously avoid it. Regardless of the term used to denote dysfunctional exercise, the various definitions used in the literature distinguish two related dimensions relevant to this discussion. The quantitative dimension refers to the physical aspects of the exercise activity—frequency, duration and intensity. The qualitative dimension refers to the psychological aspects of the exercise activity—the degree to which it is compulsive, driven, out of control, and/or ritualized. The frequently used term, “excessive exercise,” commonly refers to the quantitative dimension, whereas “compulsive exercise” is typically used in reference to the qualitative aspects. Research consistently indicates it is the compulsive quality of the exercise that is significantly associated with disordered eating pathology, not the frequency or duration of the exercise itself. This unexpected finding has important implications for the potentially positive role of exercise in the treatment and recovery process for those with EDs (Calogero & Pedrotty-Stump, 2010; Hausenblas, Cook & Chittester, N. 2007; Taranis, Touyz, La Puma & Meyer, 2011). What are the specific components of compulsive exercise? Four key correlates have been identified and evaluated in the literature which appear to have empirical support (Goodwin, Haycraft, Willis & Meyer, 2011). The first is the driven quality of the exercise activity (e.g. exercising regardless of injury, weather, time demands). Secondly, the activity is undertaken in a ritualized, rigid fashion (e.g. exercising at the same time, in the same way, resistant to change). Thirdly, the exercise is performed predominantly to manage weight and shape concerns (e.g. exercise fanatically performed to offset food intake, to maintain leanness or solely for body sculpting purposes). Lastly, the exercise is undertaken to manage negative emotional states (e.g. exercising for the mood elevating effects or to avoid feeling guilty if it’s postponed or stopped). It is the combination of these four elements, at the extreme, that comprise the clinically significant concept of compulsive exercise and which is associated with increased eating psychopathology. Health promoting exercise is also often performed in a routine manner, despite inconveniences, to support one’s health and to benefit from the mood enhancing effects. It is perhaps most instructive to think of healthy vs. compulsive exercise along a continuum, wherein the compulsive end is noted for the extreme guilt one feels if unable to exercise, and by the persistent, repetitive, and excessive nature of the behavior, even when contraindicated and in the absence of pleasure or reward. Readers interested in assessing the quality of their own or their client’s exercise activity can access the Compulsive Exercise Test (Taranis, Touyz & Meyer, 2011) online at Compulsive Exercise Test Whether, when and how an actively recovering eating disorder client begins or resumes exercising remains a matter of professional debate, but there is mounting scientific evidence that when judiciously considered, in medically stable clients, exercise can actually facilitate the weight restoration process in anorexics, as well as proffer improvements in mood, body image and self esteem for all ED clients (Calogero & Pedrotty-Stump, 2010; Hausenblas et al, 2007; Taranis et al., 2011). Hieber & Berrett (2003) introduced the concept of “intuitive exercise” in an online newsletter rich with information on the physical, emotional, psychological, and behavioral signs of overtraining, descriptions of the qualities of healthy exercise and tips for becoming an intuitive exerciser. Guidelines suggested for becoming an intuitive exerciser are reprinted below: Ø Spend some quiet and quality time listening to your mind, heart, and body. Ø Respond to that self-understanding and approach exercise accordingly. Ø Respect your inner needs and consequent internal messages. Ø Respect and respond to your body, especially those messages of pain and fatigue. Ø Examine your motives for exercise. Ø Adjust your exercise as needed and develop the healthiest motives. Ø Reserve and make sacred the time you need to take care of yourself. Ø Find exercise and physical activities which are enjoyable. Ø Remove concepts of fat, calories, and size from your exercise thoughts and language. Ø Feed your body what it needs to assure nourishment and adequate fuel to burn. Hiebert & Berrett, 2003, p. 10 Calogero & Pedrotty-Stump (2010) use the term “negative exercise mindset” to refer to the qualitative or compulsive dimension of dysfunctional exercise. They further distinguish between mindful and mindless exercise as a tool for therapists and clients to develop a recovery supportive approach to exercise. As with intuitive exercise, mindful exercise is process vs. outcome oriented, geared to be internally and present focused, balanced with and supported by proper nutrition and rest, enjoyable and exhilarating. Calogero & Pedrotty-Stump, 2010, p. 435 Lastly, the following are a few simple exercise mantras I’ve coined that may assist clinicians and clients looking for specific ideas on how to begin a new relationship with physical activity: Ø Take it outside! When we were young, we didn’t “work out” we played! Outside, in nature, where the wind in our hair, the sun in our eyes, the sounds of our playmates, and the smell of fresh cut grass enlivened our experience. Nature based vs. gym based exercise can help recovering clients to avoid the inclination to negatively compare or compete with others, and to get overly focused on the computer feedback on the equipment vs. their body’s internal feedback of the experience. Learn to assess and adjust the intensity of exercise by paying attention to your breathing (you should be able to carry on a conversation), and allow internal monitors and awareness to direct the effort and duration Ø Just “un-do” it! Reorient your activity to best suit your recovery needs at the current time (e.g. exercising solo/group, in/outdoors, headset/quiet, internal/external focus). If a specific compulsive exercise is part of your eating disorder, choose different activities to explore until you feel capable of resuming that activity with a positive exercise mindset. For example, if you compulsively attend fitness classes, at the same time, always occupying the same place in class, begin a walking program instead, and vary the times, location and whether you walk alone or with company. Ø Play it forward! Be purposeful, seek community and consider the social benefits beyond your own physical benefits. Sign up for a charitable run or bike ride, become a mentor in a youth based prevention program that includes physical activity (e.g. Girls on the Run), plan a hiking vacation with friends and train together, or join your local chapter of the Adventurous Babes Society! Ø Flexible Flexing! Whatever you do, avoid rigid or ritualistic routines-get jiggy with it! Ø Move as you’re moved! Think back to childhood. What kinds of movement gave you the greatest sense of joy, sourced all your senses, transcended awareness of time and calories burned? Find ways as an adult to recreate this kind of movement. When appropriately timed and considered, intuitive and mindfully considered exercise can become a vital element in and beyond the recovery process. To become fully recovered from an eating disorder requires that we reestablish a relationship with our bodies that is life affirming, nutritionally balanced and fully integrated-meaning our mental, physical, psychological and spiritual states are operating in a unified, open, flexible and adaptive manner. When we are thus wholly embodied, exercise is no longer about calories burned, but about “liberating our life-force.” References Calogero, R. & Pedrotty-Stump, K. (2010). A Centered Life - John 15:1-8: Who do you want to be when you “grow up?” Not WHAT do you want to be, but WHO? We all can think of others whose lives reflect God in beautiful ways… and we long for that in ourselves. It is easy to get caught up in the “list” of things that we think we must do to make that happen. Or to retreat into the attitude that it is all up to God. Ultimately God is the only one who can change us, AND in his grace he calls us to participate in his transforming work. . We build space into our life for him to work, behaviours that embody all he calls us to, and practices that shape us in his image. This weekend using the framework of a Rule of Life, we will be challenged to choose rhythms that help us to intentionally abide in Christ so he can transform us for his glory.

The hardest thing in business?or life is the factor of confidence. Whether you're in online marketing, selling products or services, or run a physical store, the confidence goes up and down. And yet, confidence is what creates sales. Sales, after all, is a transfer of enthusiasm from one person to another. So how can we create this enthusiasm without confidence? And where do we start looking? http://www.psychotactics.com http://www.psychotactics.com/dc ===== / 00:00:20 Introduction: Biryani Disaster? / 00:02:36 Table of Contents / 00:03:14 Part 1: The Root of Confidence / 00:08:14 Part 2: Getting Confidence Back / 00:12:59 Part 3: Confidence is a Rechargable Battery / 00:16:01 Summary / 00:18:25 Announcements: Book on Pricing + US Workshop-InfoProducts ===== Transcript: There are lots of things that I like doing: dancing, painting, cartooning, but one of the things I like the most is cooking. Of course I invite people over to dinner. On this evening I'd invited one of my friends and I was making this very special dish. It's a multi-layered rice dish called a biryani. If you say the biryani to most people they get a little afraid because there's so much preparation involved, and you have to get so many things right. Anyway, I got a few things wrong that day, but only I knew that I'd got those things wrong Andd yet when I went to serve the dish I mentioned that it was not up to standard. Now this friend of mine, he had never had a biryani before. He didn't know what a biryani was supposed to taste like, but what I said, it really affected him. My lack of confidence spilled over and he didn't feel that the biryani was up to standard. For ages after that, whenever we met he wanted all the other dishes except the biryani What did I do wrong? The answer doesn't lie in the recipe for the biryani or the way the biryani was made that evening. What it lies is in a factor of confidence. Sales is the transfer of enthusiasm from one person to another, and that evening I wasn't transferring any enthusiasm, so I wasn't selling my dish. This is what we do a lot when we're at networking meetings, when we're at presentations, when we're selling a product or a product or a service to a client. We lack that enthusiasm. We don't appear confident, and then the client wants to think about it. They want to ask their mother, brother, sister about it before they decide. Today we're going to talk about three aspects of confidence We'll start out with the root of confidence. Where does the confidence come from? Is it inbuilt or do we have something that we have to learn? The second is how to deal with this whole set of confidence issues when things don't seem to be going your way. The third and most importantly, to realize how confidence is like a rechargeable battery, how you need to charge it up all the time. Let's start out with the first, which is the root of confidence Your background, that's the deepest, strongest root that you can have in confidence with anything. As you're growing up you don't realize it, but as you're sitting around reading some comics or watching TV and the adults are going about doing their own things, you get an education. When I was growing up my father ran a secretarial college and he used to train people to be secretaries. I used to sit around; I used to eat; I used to read some story books, type on the typewriters because he had a lot of them. Essentially I wasn't doing anything, yet a lot was happening. A lot of the information was going into my head and I was getting confident about teaching, about speaking, about meeting people, about doing a lot of things that I didn't realize until it was much later. Why am I telling you this? I'm telling you this because when you grow up in a different kind of family you have different experiences. If your family was largely job-oriented and it was about safety and not making mistakes and not taking too many risks, then it becomes quite hard for you to do that and you have to learn that confidence. If you grow up in a family where people are cooking, or they're painting, or they're doing some woodwork, what you're doing is you're getting the confidence just by sitting around. You're absorbing all that information but you also get information. For instance, when I'm sitting with my nieces and there's my palette in front of me and I'm painting some cartoons, they're getting information about what yellow ocher looks like, how the sky is not really blue but it is blue at the top and then blue and yellow ocher in the middle and then yellow ocher towards the horizon. They get all this information so they get confident. When you don't have that confidence then you have to build up that confidence. Because sales is a transfer of enthusiasm for one person to another, all the things that you're selling depends on you being confident about it because you project that energy. What I used to do is I used to go to networking meetings and I was quite terrified I was in a new country when we moved to New Zealand. I would play "Simply The Best." I had a tape player in my car and I'd play that over and over again. That gave me confidence. That just boosted my energy to the point where I could last the meeting and then go back home. There are certain areas where you have confidence because you've grown up around that environment, that family, that atmosphere. There are other areas where you don't have the confidence. One of the things that you have to do is artificially boost that confidence somehow. Listen to some music. Listen to someone who is talking about confidence making you more confident. Because the lack of that confidence often leads to people not buying from you. How does this confidence play out in real life? We don't stand in front of an audience and say we're terrified, but we say little things like, "Oh, I'm sorry but we didn't have a good night last night," or I would say things like, "Oh, that biryani didn't turn out as well as it should. It's missing these spices." Or right after making a presentation and getting an applause we'll say, "Thank you. It was so good, but ... " But? You use the word but. It's these little clues that give away the fact that we are not as confident as we should. The moment we are confident people get this surge of enthusiasm from us and they're more interested in buying. Now sales is a lot more than just enthusiasm, but we doubt the confidence, it's almost impossible to sell anything. While some of us have our deep roots in confidence because we've grown up with that atmosphere, the moment we're thrown into an unknown space we have to get that enthusiasm building within us and not apologizing. That's how you get to a level of confidence. The moment you apologize it kills everything. Everything you've done just before that, it's dead. It's like the song from The King and I: "Whenever I feel afraid I hold my head erect and whistle a happy tune so no one will suspect I'm afraid." This takes us to the second part. What do you do when things really go wrong? For about 10 years the musicians and rock star Sting was in what he called a writer's block. He wasn't able to produce any music, write any songs, and then he wrote this album called The Last Ship. Then they went to Broadway and they spent four or five years putting together everything. The musical cost about 15 million dollars to just bring to the stage, and then about $625,000 in running costs; that is per week. Yet, they were losing. People weren't showing up for the play. You put in all of this effort, all of this time, and what happens? At this point in time it's very easy to say, "I'm a failure. I'm not supposed to do this." But it's not true. It's always a stepping stone for another learning. We've had situations where our confidence has been badly beaten. I can remember the time very early in my career when I went to Australia. It was this kind of pitch fest and I was not used to pitching from the podium. Everyone around me were selling tens of thousands of dollars of product and when I stood there I couldn't manage anything. I think about 10 people bought the product. It completely shattered the confidence. At that point in time you have to step back and reevaluate and say, "What did I do wrong?" Not "What is wrong with me," but "What did I do wrong?" Because more often than not it's got nothing to do with you. Back in the year 2000 if you published an article on someone else's site, on a big site, you'd probably get 200 subscribers. If you published it in 2010 you'd probably get 50 subscribers. Now you'd probably get 10 subscribers. The point is that the distraction has increased tremendously You look at some of the bigger sites and you find that the comments have gone down. You find that everyone is having to fight the same battle. Because you're just starting out, because you're struggling you think, "It's me. It's got something to do with me. I'm not writing well. I'm not doing stuff well." That's possible, but it's possible the technique, which is what I found out on stage in Australia. I found out that my technique was wrong, so I had to learn from that technique. I had to build up that confidence, and then when we went to Chicago a few years later I outsold everybody in the room. Now admittedly I don't do this pitching from the podium anymore, but in the early years I did a lot of it I had to get the confidence because it was very unusual for me. This is what you've got to understand. Most of the time there's nothing wrong with you. You probably don't have enough experience so you don't have enough confidence and you don't have enough technique. Of course if you're buy into hype from people who say that you're going to get hundreds of customers or thousands of customers, or Facebook fans, and you buy into the la dee da, that's your problem. At the very core of it it is about boosting yourself up, getting the technique, and that's how you get confident. Because you will run into a whole bunch of potholes in your career, and every single time you have to pull yourself out. That's what Sting has done as well. He's gone on tour now with Paul Simon. You pick yourself up, you dust yourself, and you walk on. Because there is no option. When your confidence is battered it's no point staying in the mud. You just pick yourself up and walk on. This brings us to the last part, which is the factor of how your confidence is like a rechargeable battery. Just yesterday I got an email from my friend Bryan Eisenberg. Bryan said he really liked the podcast. He mentioned how it was getting better and better with every episode. That's a charge. That would keep me going for at least two or three days, but just like there is a charge, there's also a discharge, and there are people around you all the time that don't exactly encourage you. They don't discourage but they don't encourage you. As soon as that happens your confidence starts to go down. These might be people you love: your husband, your wife, your friend These might be people that are almost always in your favor, but in this one aspect they don't exactly encourage you. Like yesterday I was helping my wife do a handstand and she's been struggling with the handstand for ages. I said to her, "I don't think you're going to get there." In that moment she was quite angry, she was quite upset. I realize today that I wasn't being helpful. If you look around you, in your house, in your friend circle, in your family, you will find people who are not discouraging you but they're not encouraging you, and you have to find people that will give you that charge. Because every single day that battery goes up and then it comes crashing down, and you have to have that charge. We get confident because we recover from mistakes, we fix those mistakes. The icing on the cake is simply when someone says, "Wow, you made a great dish. That was a great painting. That was a superb podcast." If we're not getting this from our friends and our family, especially the family, then we have to find our source that will encourage us and get those batteries up and running. When we do workshops, one of the questions that we ask is why are you attending this workshop. If you dig deep enough the answer is always confidence, always, always confidence. If you dig deep enough you will find that everyone attending your workshop, everyone buying your product, everyone getting anything from you is because they want to gain confidence. They want to get that charge from you. You've got to send out that confidence and you have to be enthusiastic. For that you have to make sure that you're not being discharged. That brings us to the end of this episode. Let's do a quick summary. We started out today with the root of confidence. When you grow up in a family or in an environment where things are happening, you don't have to be part of it. You just have to be there. Of course it helps if you're given responsibility and taught stuff as you go along, but just being around makes you more confident than the average person. The second element that we covered was what happens when you make mistakes. All of us make these mistakes. All of us make terrible mistakes, and really the only way to get over the mistake is to get up and make another mistake until you stop making mistakes. There is a technique, and people learn how to speak better, how to present better, how to write better. There is a technique, and what you need to do is buy into a system that promises you a lot of hard work instead of get rich quick or do this really, really quick. Because the quick methods, they lead to destruction. They don't work, and so your confidence goes down even further. Finally, we looked at confidence as a rechargeable battery. If you find someone like me who's a scrooge who's saying, "You're not going to do that headstand," you're never going to do the headstand at least with me around. You know this one driving. You know when couples go driving? This is what happens. You want to find a source of confidence of inspiration because our confidence is so fleeting. What's the one thing you can do today? The core of confidence is the ability to do something very quickly, like speaking a language. You get confidence from someone who has a method, a method that is slow, steady, that has tiny increments. The one thing you can do today is avoid anything that is super fast. When you see that red flag, someone promising you super quick clients, super quick this, super quick that, step aside and find something else that will truly build your confidence, truly build your skill, that takes a lot of effort. That's how you move ahead and that's how you get more confident in life.
