Spoilers for Welcome to Derry Episode 3! Thumb War returns to Derry, Maine, where the sewers are wet, the ghost children look like Spirit Halloween interns, and the cemetery scene feels one jump scare away from a discount haunted house behind a Home Depot. After two strong episodes, Episode 3 might be our first real stumble of the season. We break down: Did the show blow its horror budget in Episodes 1 & 2? Are these ghost kid vibes spooky or just… sticky? Why does the community meeting scene feel like mid-season Canadian public access TV? Are we in Derry or at Canada's Wonderland Fright Night? Pennywise lore updates (even though he may be on PTO this week) We still love the show, but we also reserve the right to yell at it. In this episode of Aviation News Talk, we begin with the developing details Weather accidents in general aviation often happen to pilots who genuinely believe they're cautious about flying in marginal conditions. But when you look closely at the chain of decisions that lead up to VFR-into-IMC crashes, a consistent pattern emerges—fatigue, long flights, pressure to complete a trip, weakening visibility, and the belief that "I can stay just under this." In Episode 404 of Aviation News Talk, Max Trescott unpacks a tragic example of this pattern and shows how NTSB data helps explain why GA pilots continue to stumble into weather accidents. Max begins with a detailed look at a 2023 crash involving a Piper Archer, N21480, flown by a 66-year-old private pilot who was en route from Maine to Sun 'n Fun. The pilot had made this long trip multiple times before and was familiar with the route. He departed Maine, stopped twice for fuel, and ended the day by sleeping on a couch in a pilot lounge—after ordering Uber Eats at around 8 p.m. According to his wife, the pilot routinely camped at airports, carried sleeping gear and guitars, and prided himself on being cautious about weather. The next morning, however, the signs of fatigue were visible. An airport employee who spoke with the pilot noted he looked tired and "could see the fatigue in his eyes." Despite checking weather and considering waiting out an approaching system, the pilot ultimately chose to depart. He told ATC he wanted to remain low—around 1,600 feet—to stay VFR under the cloud layer. Unfortunately, this strategy is one of the most dangerous choices a VFR pilot can make. Staying low reduces options, shrinks reaction time, and increases the likelihood of inadvertently entering IMC. Eight minutes after informing ATC he wanted to stay low to maintain VFR, the pilot's track shows the airplane turning right and descending. When the controller asked if he was maneuvering to stay below the clouds, the pilot replied: "Mayday, mayday, in the clouds, I'm going down." Witnesses described the airplane descending nearly straight down. The NTSB report revealed worsening weather, nearby convective activity, cloud bases around 1,300 feet AGL, and an overcast layer with tops near 3,500 feet. The pilot had passed an airport less than two miles before the crash—an airport he may have been trying to return to during his final 360-degree turn. But like many non-instrument-rated pilots who enter IMC unintentionally, he lost control within about a minute, consistent with studies showing that VFR pilots often lose control within three minutes of entering clouds. Max then connects this accident to a broader NTSB study, Risk Factors Associated with Weather-Related General Aviation Accidents (SS-05/01). This landmark analysis compared 72 weather-related accidents with 135 non-accident flights occurring nearby at the same time. The goal was to uncover what differentiates pilots who get into trouble from those who do not. The results were eye-opening. The most significant predictor was the age at which a pilot earned their first certificate, not their age at the time of the accident. Pilots who learned to fly at age 25 or younger had the lowest risk. Those who trained between 25 and 35 had a 4.5-times higher risk, between 35 and 45 had a 4.8-times higher risk, and pilots who started at 45 or older had a 3.4-times higher risk. The South Carolina pilot earned his certificate at around age 49. Another major factor was lack of an instrument rating. Non-instrument-rated pilots had a 4.8-times greater likelihood of a weather accident. Long flights were also a major contributor: legs of 300 miles or more sharply increased risk. Pilots involved in accidents were less likely to have obtained thorough weather briefings and more likely to have had previous incidents or accidents. One of the most striking findings concerned written and checkride performance. Accident pilots had cumulative pass rates averaging 84–86%, while non-accident pilots averaged around 95%. Some accident pilots had multiple failed checkrides, including one commuter pilot who had failed nine practical tests. The study concluded that stronger written and checkride performance was statistically linked to lower accident involvement. From there, Max shifts to what pilots can do differently, starting with awareness. Humans are poor at detecting gradual reductions in visibility—the "frog in warm water" problem. Max describes an early flight to Massachusetts where visibility slowly degraded from 25 miles to around 10 miles, yet he didn't notice until the change became obvious. To counter this, he recommends periodically estimating visibility in flight using runway lengths, moving-map distances, landmarks, and horizon clarity. Max also teaches a simple method for estimating cloud clearance using a 45-degree reference point on the cloud base. By timing how long it takes to reach the point beneath the cloud and using your groundspeed, you can determine if you're maintaining the required 500-foot clearance. The same geometry works for estimating horizontal cloud distance. Finally, Max emphasizes fatigue and decision-making. After nearly 10 hours of flying the day before, poor sleep on a couch, and an early morning departure, the pilot in the accident was not at peak performance. Nutrition also matters—low glucose levels degrade decision-making. Max stresses the need to set clear weather trigger points before departure, brief passengers on them, and stick to the plan. For any pilot who flies VFR, especially on long cross-country trips, this episode highlights why VFR-into-IMC accidents still happen—and how to stay VFR by using better judgment, better tools, and objective visibility cues. In the spring of 2017, the phone calls came almost every day. Tina Stadig always stayed in touch with her twin sister, no matter where life had taken her. The last time they spoke, Tina talked about what was next in her life. She mentioned finding a new place to land, possibly with her sister, like old times. They never made a plan. And then, one day, the calls stopped. Days passed. Then weeks. And the silence that followed was louder than any conversation they'd ever had. It would take months before anyone realized just how long Tina had been gone… and by then, the search for answers had already become something much more complicated. At the time of her disappearance in 2017, Tina was described as white with brown hair and hazel eyes, about 5-foot-2 and 140 pounds. She might be carrying a backpack and trash bag with her personal belongings inside, and was known to frequent Skowhegan, Waterville and Bangor. In this week's Mistake of the Week, Mark Graban tells the story of a Maine hospital system that accidentally mailed condolence letters to 531 very-much-alive patients. The cause? A computer glitch — and a few missing fail-safes. Mark explores what this bizarre mix-up reveals about system design, automation, and trust in healthcare. Beyond the absurd headline lies a familiar pattern: when we blame people instead of learning from process failures, we guarantee more mistakes. So what does “fully resolved” really mean? And what can leaders learn from a mistake that's literally to die for? If you received this episode through your podcast app and not a séance, you're doing fine.

The Birth of BuzzCaps John Pierson shares the story of how he and his family created BuzzCaps. After building their first pool in Maine, they struggled with mosquito infestations that ruined their evenings. Inspired by their challenges, John set out to develop a product that would allow them to enjoy their poolside without the pesky bugs. Thus, BuzzCaps was born—a simple yet effective solution that transforms deck or fence posts into tiki torches, utilizing citronella oil to deter mosquitoes naturally.2. Understanding the Product BuzzCaps are designed to fit on four-inch or five-inch posts and require no tools for installation. Each product comes with a 12-ounce oil canister to hold citronella oil, which masks human scent and keeps mosquitoes at bay. This innovative design not only solves a common problem but does so in a way that enhances the aesthetic of outdoor living spaces. John emphasizes that a clean and upscale look was a priority during development, making BuzzCaps an attractive addition to any deck or backyard.3. A Family Affair What makes BuzzCaps special is its family-oriented foundation. John, his wife Lisa, and their son Max collaborated throughout the design process. They voted on various names, ultimately settling on BuzzCaps, which cleverly reflects the product's purpose. John credits his family for their encouragement and feedback, helping him refine the design to its current successful form.4. The Importance of Networking John highlights the significance of networking in growing BuzzCaps. During his first expo experience at the Pool, Spa, Deck, and Patio Expo in Vegas, he made valuable connections with distributors and learned about the industry. This exposure opened doors to new opportunities and potential partnerships, proving that stepping outside one's comfort zone can yield incredible results.5. Future Prospects As a relatively young company, BuzzCaps is focused on spreading awareness about their product. John envisions expanding their product line to cater to different materials and post sizes, further enhancing outdoor living experiences for homeowners. This innovative approach shows that BuzzCaps is not just a product but a brand dedicated to improving outdoor spaces. Conclusion: BuzzCaps presents a fresh solution to a longstanding problem for outdoor enthusiasts. Watch this episode on YouTube! https://youtu.be/xuWRBO_mzHc The first week of Maine's 2025 deer season was a great one at Big Woods Outfitters, with great weather, a few days of great snow, and the hunters putting down some great bucks. Tune in to hear their stories.
The Garbage Heist and the Fire Truck Joyride When it comes to dumb criminal stories, this week's episode of The Shallow End Podcast might just take the trash-covered cake. JG and Linds explore two jaw-dropping tales of grand theft municipal—one featuring a pair of Alabama geniuses who used a stolen garbage truck as their getaway vehicle in an ATM heist gone gloriously wrong, and another involving an Australian man who took a fire truck for a joyride… sirens blazing. From sparks flying down Birmingham streets to a cross-jurisdiction chase through New South Wales, it's a masterclass in bad ideas—where optimism bias meets municipal machinery. The guys dissect what drives people to commit felonies in the least stealthy vehicles possible and find surprising poetry (and Shakespeare) in the stupidity. Plus, listener mail brings a “petrified wood curse,” an unexpected toddler interruption during mommy and daddy time, and a conversation about Maine slang that'll make you rethink your “door yard.” Learn more about your ad choices. There will be three of us presenting the news and views to you this week. We have Jenny Holland, our friend and colleague, in Ireland to discuss everything from Transgender Madness to Mamdani. Learn the real reason so many Irish support ‘Palestine' and how we know all the best New York intellectual salons! As we are in Ireland we discuss how the radical left in Europe and the UK are still as crazy as they've ever been. We were at the latest Transgender madness court case in Belfast and it's a complete doozy. In the crazy world of the left, questioning gender madness is enough to end your career but your terrorist boss is a bonus for the organisation. And they argued this in court!!Watch this week to hear it all. And the BBC were caught doctoring Trump's speech ahead of the 2024 election, but it's the MAGA crowd that spreads disinformation, right? Watch this week's episode to laugh at the world's most overrated media company that got caught with their TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome) showing. But will they still get away with it?And Jenny, who has spent decades in New York, helps us unravel why the city of high finance has elected a self declared socialist. And should we feel sorry for his supporters? So why did everyone miss something so obvious? Also, our OCTOBER 7 play was performed in Bowdoin, Maine, but we don't know where it's going next. There is still a big problem with anti-semitism and ignorance about Israel, and it was never more apparent after Israel's darkest day in 2023. We want to continue touring our play but we need your help to make that happen. So please go to UnreportedStorySociety.com or October7thePlay.com and give what you can, and write to us if you want to bring a performance to a location near you. *****************************************************To read Jenny's Substack click here: https://jennyeholland.substack.comTo watch and subscribe to Jenny Holland's YouTube page click here:https://m.youtube.com/@SavingCultureFromItself To subscribe to our substack click here:https://phelimmcaleer.substack.com/To Donate: https://secure.anedot.com/unreported-story-society/cf0cdeea5333b147798ffProjects You Need to Check Out: https://unreportedstorysociety.com/our-projects/Social Tags: X:@SemperFemina21Insta: @jennyehollandFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/jenny.hollandAnn & Phelim SocialsPhelim's X: (https://x.com/PhelimMcAleer)Ann's X: (https://x.com/annmcelhinney)USS SocialsInsta: (https://www.instagram.com/unreportedstorysociety/)Facebook: (https://www.facebook.com/TheAPScoop/)X: (https://x.com/AP_Unreported)
It had been exhausting. It had been challenging. But Emma Gatewood refused to give up on her dream to solo thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. So? She kept going.
