In this episode, I talk about Michael Haneke's controversial and thought-provoking 1997 film, "Funny Games." It's a thriller that breaks all the rules and raises questions about the representation of violence in mass media. A family is terrorized in their vacation home by two young men who take enjoyment in brutality and degradation. Haneke uses surprising and unexpected techniques to confront the audience of his film and to make us think deeper and more critically about the violence and suffering we see in movies and television. But a recent study suggests that to maximize learning, we also ought to be taking short micro-breaks within each practice session. Because it seems that most of our learning doesn't take place when our fingers are moving, but in the short rest periods between the moments when we're actively performing a skill. 152. 9 Principles for Unstoppable Success

Welcome back to another episode of Monetization Nation. In our last episode with Kelly Roach, we discussed strategies to successfully run live product launches, Kelly's entrepreneurial journey, and the power of collaboration. In today's episode, we'll be discussing nine principles for success from Kelly's book Unstoppable.   It's Never Too Late   Before we dive into these principles, Kelly talked about another topic in her book that really resonated with me: it's never too late to start to dream big and achieve amazing success. Kelly shares several examples of people who didn't achieve success until a little later in their lives.    Julia Child was 39 before she published her first cookbook. After working in advertising and media, her TV debut came at the age of 51. Ray Kroc bought McDonald's in 1954 at the age of 52. Laura Ingalls Wilder was 65 before she published the first of the Little House books. Colonel Sanders franchised Kentucky Fried Chicken when he was 62 and sold it for $2 million 12 years later. The first true Walmart opened when Sam Walton was 44. Henry Ford didn't launch the Ford Motor Company until he was 40.   We often think if we aren't successful by a certain age then we never will be. For most of us, our greatest success is going to come in our 40s and 50s. When we are that age, we're actually in a better position to find success because we're more mature and we have more life experience.   “Wherever you are, do not let your life be wasted. It's never too late. It's not about how old or young you are, it's about the amount of tenacity, determination, and perseverance that you have.” - Kelly Roach     Stop Resenting the 1% and Join Them     Kelly has seen many people who have a negative attitude toward people who are wealthy, yet in the next breath, they're saying they wish they were that wealthy. If we have a goal to become wealthy we can't resent people who have achieved that goal. Kelly said, “You're not going to achieve something that you resent, you're going to repel that. You're telling the universe ‘I don't want that. I don't like that.'”   While some of the 1% had previous advantages in their lives, many of them are self-made. They worked hard to get to where they are today. Instead of resenting them, we can learn from them. They have given us an example as they've carved their paths to success, and if we learn from their experiences we may find success too.     Cultivate the Entrepreneurial Spirit     Most of us have had 18 years of programming telling us that failure is bad. In our culture, it is very important to get good grades or do well in athletics or music, or other extracurricular activities. This can set us up for success in many ways, but it can also make us afraid of failure.   When Kelly was first starting as an entrepreneur, she was so afraid of failure. She was used to being in the corporate world where if you make a mistake, you can get fired. In entrepreneurship, however, we have to make mistakes in order to learn how to execute. Mistakes and risks are part of the job, and it can be hard to shift our mindset to realize that mistakes are okay.   “If you only play it safe and you stay in the box of what you already know how to do, you're not going anywhere,” Kelly said.     Act Like a CEO if You Want to Earn Like a CEO     Everybody wants success. Everybody wants a big house, expensive vacations, and their dream car. People who have those things live their lives in a specific way. They have discipline and perseverance, they've made sacrifices, they make investments in themselves, and they hold themselves to a certain standard all because they see themselves as a CEO.   Kelly has seen many people who think, “Once I'm successful, I'll do the work.” They're trying to put the cart before the horse. We can't start working hard after we get the promotion. We have to work hard to get the promotion in the first place. We can't say, “I'll build a team once I hit six figures,” because we're not going to get there without a team. And we can't wait to take risks until we see the payoffs.   Entrepreneurship requires us to dive in and give it everything we've got. It's not something we can just dip our toes in and find success. Success is much more likely when we start acting like a CEO, putting in the hard work, and making the hard decisions.     Act like a Leader     Along with acting like CEOs, we also need to act as leaders. Kelly said. “You have to see yourself as a leader. You have to conduct yourself as a leader. You have to be a leader in all things: word and deed. If you want to go far and go high in life—and it doesn't matter what that is; that could be at home with your children, in your relationship with your spouse, in your community, in your church, in your business and your career—you have to conduct yourself at that level if you want the rewards of life that come at that level.”   We are always at the podium as entrepreneurs. Everything we say and do is on display. So we must be ready to act as leaders at all times.      Develop Business Mastery     Growing a business has a lot of moving pieces: sales, marketing, infrastructure, systems, team building, leadership, HR, legal, etc. There are a lot of moving pieces to build a company, but often entrepreneurship is simplified down to acquiring clients.   Someone can secure the huge investor and still lose everything, going right back to where they started. Someone can get the big win on the front end with clients, but they don't have the backend systems to support it so they lose them all.   “Business mastery,” Kelly said, “is really about investing in committing to learning the components of building and running a successful business and creating mastery of your own skillset in being the leader. . . . Really think about the energy and effort that you're putting into developing your own skills as a CEO and as a business owner and [make] sure that the way you're investing in mastering these different fundamentals of business aligns with how high and how far you want to go. Your business can't grow beyond your growth.”     Invest in Ourselves     Let's face it, none of us know it all. None of us have achieved what we're trying to achieve before. But there are people who have achieved our goals before or have experience in the things we're trying to do.    In order to reach our goals, we need to be investing in ourselves. “Get the mentorship, the information, education, support, the resources that you need in order to achieve the outcomes that you want.,” Kelly said. “Your best investment is always going to be in your worth because you touch on everything else that you come in contact with.”   We should be investing in ourselves every day, even if we only have time for something small like listening to an informational podcast. We can't fill up the gas tank in our car once a year. It's something we've constantly got to keep up.     Don't Avoid Sales     Many entrepreneurs and small business owners almost have this phobia of sales. They don't want to spend time on it, they don't have a sales system, strategy, or salesperson in their company or on their team.   The problem with this is that everything in life from landing clients to getting kids to do their chores is sales. Everything is sales; everything involves a negotiation. “This is something that the vast majority of people really avoid. They have this negative perception, but it's really helping someone to do what's in their own best interest by showing them what's in it for them,” Kelly said. One of the most important skills that an entrepreneur can learn is how to be a great salesperson because everything is sales.     Be Disciplined      We often look at successful people and say, “Wow. They're so talented.” Talent does play a role in success, but it isn't the most important thing. What is the most important thing? Discipline.    Discipline is available to anyone. We choose to be persistent. We choose to be disciplined enough to work through challenges, to do what we don't feel like doing because it's the right thing to do, and to be a good leader even when we're exhausted and don't want to get back on the phone with someone one more time for the day.   “Discipline is the price that you pay to achieve greatness in every area of life, and almost always the answer to why you don't have what you want in your life is discipline,” Kelly said.   When I went to college, I received the largest private scholarship the university offered, but I was nowhere near the smartest kid there. What I had in my favor is I could outwork anybody. A lot of the time the biggest scholarships, best grades and GPAs, and the best business opportunities don't go to the smartest person, but they go to the person who's willing to discipline themselves and outwork everybody.     Focus on Something Bigger      If our goal is just to pay the bills, we're only going to get so far. Paying the bills, making money, and buying a house are all great goals but they are only going to bring us so much fulfillment. Focusing on something bigger than ourselves is the thing that is going to propel us to achieve our goals and dreams and bring fulfillment, joy, and a spark to our lives.   It will also help us during hard times. We'll be able to put things in perspective, deal with challenges, and work through hardships. Kelly said, “When I'm having a really big challenge when I'm struggling, I really try to put things in perspective and remember the why and remember that picture because I know that will help me recharge and refocus and get my mindset back on track to keep moving forward.”   Life is really about something bigger than us. The whole purpose and meaning are about doing good and making the world a better place. That's where we'll find true fulfillment.    Thinking about the big picture can be easier than thinking about the small. When we think small, not only do we think small in our solutions, but it's also hard to get people excited and motivated. It takes just as much effort to do things small. Kelly said, “When you're solving small problems, you box yourself into small solutions. When you are solving the 10x problem, you're opening up your whole world, and you're paving a path for yourself to succeed at that next level.”   Key Takeaways   Thank you so much Kelly for sharing your stories and insights with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode:   It's never too late to find success. Success doesn't have to happen at a certain age. If we resent what we want to become, we will never become it. Don't be afraid of failure. As an entrepreneur, it is part of the job. We have to put in the hard work if we want success. We must see and conduct ourselves as leaders. We should be striving to learn about every aspect of our business, not just getting clients. We should invest in ourselves daily to help our business grow with us. Everything involves sales. We shouldn't try to avoid it. Discipline will get us to where we want to be in life. Focusing on something bigger will give us fulfillment and allow us to think of big solutions.   Connect with Kelly   If you want to learn more about Kelly or connect with her, you can find her on LinkedIn or visit her website at UnstoppableEntrepreneur.com.    Want to be a Better Digital Monetizer?   Please follow these channels to receive free digital monetization content:   Get a free Monetization Assessment of your business Subscribe to the free Monetization eMagazine. Matthew gives us the family history at the arrival of Jesus.  It is a record of the legal claim that family members have to the bounty of the riches that Jesus brings.  This is a family that Jesus attaches himself to, and by extension, we are attached to.  With it come rights, and benefits, and inheritances, and power, and offices.  Ultimately, you want to be a part of this.  It is like the reading of a will of a person of great wealth.  You WANT to be a part of this.So then,  what kind of people does Jesus attach Himself to?  Well, that part isn't so hot.  You see, it is full of people.  Men and women who do the good and the bad that humans do.  There are prostitutes, murderers, adulterers, attempted murderers, family abandoners, and some are described as just plain EVIL.  And yet, Jesus choses this family.  "These are my people.  These are mine.  I have chosen them."  And the greatest thing is that He is faithful over centuries to a continuous series of flawed people.  You would never make this up.  The story is just too ridiculous.  So of this family history, we are saved FROM them, or at least their sin.  But Matthew goes to great lengths to say that we are saved THROUGH them, in a sense.  So if you are the wild sheep of your family tree, you are welcome here. 2000 years of family history in 7 minutes.write to bewithme.us@gmail.com.  Subscribe if you desire.

I record this just hours after I watched my grade 12 students, in tears, hugging and signing each other shirts and saying goodbyes on their last day of school. They are excited for the future, but genuinely sad as they realize this is the end of an important period of their lives. You too will have many "lasts". You will one day enjoy your last meal. You will have last conversations with people before they pass on from this life. Some of them unexpectedly. One of the ways to increase our gratitude in this moment is to remember that life continues to change. If these days will be remembered as the good ole days later on, are we appreciating them enough right now while we are still living them?If you have participated in the Ivy League Challenge, this conversation is not new to you. Throughout the program I regularly emphasize the fact that middle school is not merely a time to prepare for high school. High school is not merely a time to prepare for college. College is not merely a time to prepare for your first job, etc. The irony is that those who decide to live out their personal values to the fullest while in middle school will be the most confident and best prepared for high school. Those high school students who live out their personal values to the fullest while in high school will be head and shoulders above their peers in the eyes of elite university admissions officers. Those who see each stage of life as a preparation for the next stage of life will lack the skills, mindset, and confidence to take advantage of life's opportunities. Now that you have your hiring criteria, what questions need to be asked at the interview? Well, in addition to determining the skills needed and the personality needed, you also want to discover one additional thing. Does the candidate mesh well with your company culture? Here are a few tips to help you start off on the right track.Ask the same questions to every candidate. This will let you compare each one using the same criteria. In your list of questions, choose some that help you assess the actual skills of the candidate.Add in some questions that help you determine their personality. Finally, add in questions to help you determine if their values mesh with the corporate values. In a moment, I’ll give you a sample list of interview questions. First, though, let’s talk about the values part. This suggestion is one of those tips that has absolutely revolutionized how we hire.Ask Questions to Determine the Values that You Want in a Team Member.Just before Covid hit in 2020, my executives and I set an audacious goal to quadruple the size of the company. (I know. The timing was awful.) We knew that we would need to hire new candidates to help us get to the goal. We also knew that the company revenue had plateaued a few years ago. I realized that to get to the next plateau, we most likely would need to make some changes in personnel. One of our team members had a brilliant idea. We have a list of our corporate core values that we live by. Why not score our team members based on each of these core values. To experiment, I and the other two executives scored each other. Not surprisingly, each of us scored pretty high in each of the areas.Next, we each score every single one of our team members. Interestingly, the team members who scored very high in our values were also the ones who appeared to be the most productive for the company as well. The ones who scored lower were more mediocre by comparison. The technique worked so well for our current team, that we made it a part of the hiring process. So, in addition to asking questions to determine the skills of the candidate, we now ask questions to help us determine their values as well. For instance, core value number one at our company is responsiveness. We send out an email asking candidates to go to our calendar and set up a meeting. We automatically exclude candidates who take more than a day to respond. For full show notes, visit Questions to Ask in a Job Interviewhttps://www.leadersinstitute.com/a-quality-formula-for-interviewing-candidates-questions-to-ask-in-a-job-interview/

In today's episode, she talks me through how she navigated her mental health journey, at times battling disordered eating, deep depression, and a packed schedule leaving little-to-no time for herself. We also address some helpful resources for anyone struggling to prioritize theirs — including inspiring professionals including psychologists and psychiatrists offering up free tools for the masses — as well as what it was like for Garrick to go on anti-depressants (and then, come off of them). Heeeellloooooo, season SIX! It was a no-brainer for me to kick off season six with Hillary Allen because of her incredible story involving a near fatal #hurdlemoment in 2017. During a skyrace in Norway — which is essentially a run that involves massive vertical gain and direct ascents over steep, technical terrain — she slipped and fell from a ridge. Cue a 50-foot free fall followed by a nasty tumble, more than 100 feet further down jagged rocks. In today's episode, she talks to us about how she got to this point — born in Colorado and falling in love the outdoors from a young age, then trail running while working on her masters degree. That hobby turned into a full-blown career, leading her to become one of the best mountain ultra runners in the world before. She talks us through the details of that accident, bracing for impact and landing in a hospital with 14 broken bones. She gets honest about the road to revery, which was more than jus physical, admitting that there were times in the months that followed where she didn’t want to live. Grateful that Hillary, new author of Out And Back, is here with us to tell us this story today. This week, I'm hosting six conversations as part of a special series on motherhood here on Hurdle. Although I'm not a mom just yet, my talks with Hurdlers over the years have taught me so much about this life chapter. I've learned that motherhood itself is both beautiful and challenging, exhausting and rewarding. Whether or not children are in the cards for you, it's safe to say that we've all been dramatically impacted by a mother — whether it be our own or another — in our lives. So, leading up to Mother's Day, I'm chatting with six extraordinary women. Some moms. Some not. But, each has a story to tell, forever shaped by the women that came before them. The year 2020 was a one of drastic change for Y7 Studio’s Sarah Larson Levey. Between the shuttering of all of the company’s studios because of the pandemic, having a baby boy in June, and moving to Austin from New York — it’s been an emotional whirlwind. In today’s episode, Sarah and I chat navigating coming back to her body after the baby, moving in a way that feels right for her, and agree that there’s nothing wrong with wanting to lose weight if you’re uncomfortable in yours — as long as that’s not purely based on a number on the scale. She also mentions how motherhood has taught her the importance of patience and staying calm, both which have helped her while working to studios (Chicago just did so this week!). We agree that back to “normal” is going to be a social adjustment for sure, but we’re both excited for the opportunity to connect again. In this episode, multifamily investor Jamie Gruber, talks about how to achieve a whole life millionaire status built around the principles of building the right habits and the right mindset to set you up for success. Jamie is the co-founder of Multifamily and More, a real estate investing group with 18 chapters and over 7,200 members. He's also the President of GoBundance – Emerge and Ascension Divisions, the tribe of healthy, wealthy, generous people that choose to live epic lives. In order to be a member of GoBundance, you have to be an accredited investor, essentially, a million net worth and with $250,000-$300,000 annual income. Today, he talks about how Emerge can help you build the person that you are NOW in becoming the future YOU. Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation: The Idea Behind GoBundance The 3 goals of GoBundance Emerge About the book, Tribe of Millionaires The curriculum around the GoBundance Emerge course Become the person NOW that you want to be in the future Building the habit of giving The power of having an abundance mindset Episode Highlights: About GoBundance Emerge The idea behind GoBundance Emerge is to help people – men and women – who desire to level up their life and achieve whole life millionaire status. GoBundance has been a man's only tribe. They recently created a women's tribe and Emerge is at the center, accepting both men and women. Emerge is a 12-week course built to achieve these three goals: 1. Help people transform - give them the tools, knowledge and skills and support to set a goal and meet that goal, hopefully, within that 12 week period. 2. Imprint the brand of abundance - leverage a book written by the elders called Tribe of Millionaires. 3. Invite them to a longer-term mastermind, called Ascend. Becoming the Person NOW that You Want to Be in the Future There are books written about it. Everybody has heard the phrase. But what people do when they have a vision is to go into action items. What they don't talk about is that they have to be that person. For you to be the rock, you’ve got to be the rock. You don't do these 12 steps to be the rock since you've got to BE the rock. And the way you become one is by doing certain little things every day, whether it's for your physique, for your business or for your brand. You have to build the habits now to become the future you. Building the Habit of Giving The mindset of giving and the value of giving has been with the people at GoBundance. And when things are really going to start to click is when you're in a mode of giving – not getting. You will eventually get what you want, but right now, just focus on giving. Build that habit of giving. Pay for the person behind you in the Starbucks line. Promote your favorite restaurant on your social media. You can do a lot of things to give to others. And when you're in that mode, it feels good and it feels right. It's the key tactic to success. I know you feel frustrated. You feel like you sound like everyone else.     You don't fit in because what works for "everyone" doesn't seem to work for you.    You fear deep down that you are just copying others that you learn from.    You aren't confident in the tools you have to give your clients massive transformation.   You have tried lots of times and lots of different things but no matter what you always end up back here - nothing seems to stick.   You WANT the weight loss, the business success, the income, the clients....but you can't seem to show up for your wants.    And you wonder:  will I always be like this?  Can I even hope for something different? Is something wrong with me?    Love, I have been there. I get how you feel.    And there is NOTHING wrong with you.   You aren't broken, you aren't hopeless, you aren't a bad coach.  You are just operating out of alignment.   Let me explain:   Right now you are in constant start/stop mode because you are at war with yourself:  you can feel that what you have been taught or shown doesn't FEEL good to you but you don't know what else to do.  You have been told that's the "way to get results" right?  So you try to force yourself to do it but because it doesn't feel good you don't and then you end up beating yourself up like something is wrong with you.    When, in fact, there is nothing wrong with you.  Your intuition is speaking and you are ignoring her out of fear that she's wrong.    Over the span of your life you have taken on many, many beliefs.  Aka thoughts that go something like this: "You have to work hard to make money" "You have to sell X way to make sales" "You have to overcome objections" "You have to fit in or you're weird" "You don't know what you're talking about" "You aren't smart" "You have to hustle for what you want" "You're big boned - you won't ever look like those girls" "You can't charge that much" "You can't ask for that" "They would never pick you"   I'm sure you could add a lot more to the list.   When you have a belief, your brain will always work to prove it right - even ones you don't like.    So, your brain will find a way to show up and sabotage you anytime that you begin to take action that would disprove these beliefs.  Whether that's in your health, relationships, business - ALL of it.    When others tell you to just "work harder" or that you need more "discipline", it doesn't work because you cannot outwork your subconscious beliefs. No matter how much you want to.   So what can you do?   3 Things: 1.  Identify the hidden beliefs/agreements that are showing up holding you hostage.   2.  Address the pain and healing that is needed (we often take on beliefs out of painful circumstances that wounded us - healing is needed there for true transformation to take place)   3.  Reframe and build in new beliefs that support the action you want to take.    Sounds simple. And the concept for sure is.  But we have had years of living and thinking the ways that we have.  So this work is a process that requires intention, space and committment.    That's why I created Building Beliefs That Serve:  A 6 week group coaching program designed to help you identify the core beliefs that are holding you back, begin your healing process AND start building in replacement beliefs that will free you to show up the way that you truly desire to.    In this course you will get:   1.  My exact 6 step process to walk you through this on printable sheets so that this can become a daily practice for you.   2.  3 live trainings and 3 coaching calls with me and the group plus 3 BONUS trainings from me on Feminine energy for your business:  Branding, Selling + Developing unique offers that sell. (9+ hours of content for you)   3. 6 weeks of accountability to work on the root issue and produce new action.  You will come out of this course with new beliefs and new action to support those beliefs.   4.  Support in the group, from the group, my team and I.    5.  Weekly check ins for help.   All calls will be recorded and sent to your email that you sign up with. You will get access for life to the program and any additional trainings I add in.  As an alumni you will also get discounts on my other courses as well as first place in line to join them.   For more info click here https://level-up-babe.mykajabi.com/building-beliefs-that-serve-.

Everyone has the power to be a healing presence in someone’s life. Even just being present for someone can make all the difference. With 30 years of experience in spiritual healing, today’s guest, Laura Di Franco is here to show you how to listen to your own intuition and facilitate healing for yourself and others. Laura knew she wanted to be a healer, even as a teenager. With 17 published books under her belt, nine of those being Amazon best-sellers, Laura has made healing her life’s work through various modalities. She is a trained physical therapist, content marketer, business strategist and spiritual healer, among other things. Ask Yourself, What do YOU Want? It’s a hard question to answer. Like many of us, Laura spent a lot of time doing what she thought she was supposed to do. She checked all the boxes on things that were supposed to make her happy, but they weren’t. Five years ago, she asked herself that hard question, “what do I want?”A big catalyst for finding the answer was her divorce process. While these were rough times for her, Laura knew she wanted to set a better example of love for her children, which wasn’t being accomplished in her marriage. This transformative process led to her focusing more and more on her true purpose, bringing her into a more authentic space. Listening to Your IntuitionHow did Laura get to a place of true authenticity? She says it’s all about listening to your intuition, which is easier said than done, of course. When asked how others can learn how to listen to their intuition, Laura had these words of wisdom: “The first step is to become grounded within your body. Sit in silence and concentrate on your breath. Take time to acknowledge how you’re feeling. Incorporate other mindfulness practices such as meditation or journaling. The next step is to practice gratitude. Even if you’re at rock bottom, find at least one thing to be grateful for. Something as simple as your breath is something to be grateful for.” Are you ready to start your healing journey? Laura has no shortage of resources available for you. "Judgmental" is a negative descriptor in our culture, but the same culture holds some values so deeply that it "cancels" anyone who disregards them. And while cancel culture can bring great harm, it's existence points to the fact that not all judgment is bad. Jasmine Holmes says, "Even in our culture that is not a largely Christian culture, we understand that to judge is to protect. We want to make a judgment about people who are putting others in danger. We want to make a judgment about people who are victimizing others."In this episode of Let's Talk, Jasmine Holmes, Jackie Hill Perry, and Melissa Kruger talk about the confusion around a biblical view of judgment. They discuss the questions of when it's right and when it's wrong to judge others, and whether it's possible to make right judgments with the wrong heart attitude. They talk about the difference in judging those inside the church and out. Ultimately, the gospel and our own need for grace must inform how and why we judge other people.Related ResourcesJudge People!
