Have you ever looked at people who seem to have figured it out? They're in their sixties, seventies, or eighties, and they're healthy. They're happy. They're in great relationships. And you think, "what do they know that I don't?" Guess what? We don't have to wonder anymore. The Harvard Study of Adult Development is the longest longitudinal study ever done on physical and emotional well-being. Over 80 years, researchers tracked people across their entire lives to answer one question: what actually makes life feel good? The results were surprising: The quality of your relationships is the number one predictor of your mental health, your physical health, and your overall life satisfaction. It isn't money, success, fame, productivity, or hustling harder. It's not achieving some perfect version of yourself. On today's episode, I'm sharing some objective ways you can make your life happier and healthier, according to 80 years of research. Read the show notes for today's episode at terricole.com/795

Host Dr. Bradley Block welcomes Tracy McCubbin, to explore the psychology behind hoarding and practical decluttering strategies. With two decades of helping clients—including many doctors—McCubbin explains how our hunter-gatherer instincts and sentimental attachments fuel a $10 billion storage industry. She addresses Dr. Block's paper-hoarding habits, the outdated textbooks in his office, and the challenge of managing kids' toys, offering insights on separating decluttering, organizing, and cleaning. This episode equips physicians with tools to break free from clutter paralysis and foster independence in their families. Three Actionable Takeaways:Separate decluttering, organizing, and cleaning: Declutter first. Ask: Do I need, like, or use it? Toss sentimental "might-need-it-someday" papers unless reading immediately. Then organize. Where does it live so I can find it fast?. Clean last. Physicians: Ditch printed articles or outdated textbooks, bookmark digitally; info doesn't vanish and evolves quickly.Personalize systems to your brain: Match organization to how you process e.g., chronological vs. categories. For doctors' "paper people" habits, use bookmark folders over prints. At home/office, ensure stuff supports goals: rest, work, family, not blocks them. Habits like "keys in bowl" prevent morning chaos, especially for neurospicy/ADHD brains.Curb kid/family clutter at the source: Rotate toys monthly to spark imagination, fewer toys, more play, per child development. Parents and grandparents: Skip guilt buys; teach cleanup for independence ("Know where army guys are? Grab 'em yourself!"). Couples: If space allows. Prioritize shared goals over perfection. Turn old ones into quilts if needed.About the Show:Succeed In Medicine covers patient interactions, burnout, career growth, personal finance, and more. If you're tired of dull medical lectures, tune in for real-world lessons we should have learned in med school!About the Guest:Tracy McCubbin is the CEO and founder of dClutter Fly, one of America's top decluttering companies, where she has helped thousands of clients, including physicians, clear clutter over the past 20 years. She is the author of Making Space Clutter-Free and her latest book, Make Space for Happiness. Recently, she transformed dClutter Fly into a franchise, empowering others to join her mission. Most people don't realize they're running on autopilot until life forces them to stop. Through the lens of ‘Memento Mori', this episode shows you how living for meaning can help you find direction, improve your overall well-being, and create a purpose-driven life. You'll learn how to use this mindset shift to support your self improvement, reduce your stress, and cultivate happiness right now. I'm joined by Karen Salmansohn, author and mindset coach, for a conversation about living for meaning and finding direction through the lens of Memento Mori. I'm revisiting this episode because its message feels especially relevant right now - how to reduce stress, stay grounded in your mindset, and create a purpose-driven life without giving up your ambition or drive. Rather than being morbid, the Memento Mori mindset offers clarity. It brings you back into the present moment and helps you make more intentional choices about who you are becoming and what truly matters. Together, we explore why traditional to-do lists often leave people feeling busy but unfulfilled, and how shifting toward values-based, identity-driven habits can support greater happiness and emotional well-being. This episode is an invitation to step out of autopilot, reconnect with what matters most, and begin living with more intention starting exactly where you are. As you listen, I invite you to reflect on this question: If your time is limited, what deserves more of your attention right now? Episode Breakdown: 00:00 Welcome to Love, Happiness & Success 00:48 The “funeral question” and how it helps you live with meaning 01:19 Memento Mori and using mortality awareness to find direction 05:29 Karen's wake-up call and the origin of Your To Die For Life 09:13 “Everything that is not given is lost” and the meaning of legacy 14:22 Aristotle on happiness vs pleasure and building a purpose-driven life 21:08 The to-die list, core values, and identity-based habits 30:22 Karen's seven core values and intentional daily choices 38:28 Mortality marbles and a mindset shift that reduces stress 46:31 Dr. Lisa's 9/11 story and choosing a more intentional life If this gives you a desire for more meaning, more clarity, or a different relationship with stress, I want to offer you something supportive. You're invited to schedule a free consultation with me or a trusted member of my team. This is a private, secure space to talk about what's been weighing on you, what you want to feel differently, and what kind of support would truly help you move forward. And consciousness like attitude is your mental approach (your thoughts and feelings) to life. Feelings aren't facts: they are indicators. They're indicators of our consciousness: our present thoughts and the direction we are headed. Trusting in Good = happiness. Is happiness a skill you can develop? Or is it a place you find yourself, if you're lucky? Today's podcast is a bonus episode that I've recorded, from me to you, to demonstrate that yes, happiness is about more than just chance. These special Boxing Day podcasts are becoming a bit of a tradition now (look out for one I'll be releasing on New Year's Day too). And in this one, I share five powerful ideas with you – five happiness habits that can transform your life in meaningful ways. They're all explored in much greater detail in my book Happy Mind Happy Life: 10 Simple Ways to Feel Great Every Day, which is being re-published in the UK in an exciting new format on 1 January 2026. But you can leverage your happiness levels right away by listening today. Here's a quick overview of what you'll learn: 1. Happiness is a Skill - Discover the difference between ‘junk happiness' and ‘core happiness' to feel more content, in control, and aligned with your values. 2. Define Success for Yourself - Imagine yourself on your deathbed and identify three things you'll wish you had done. What can you do now to move toward that ending? 3. Eliminate Choice - We make thousands of decisions a day, and each one drains mental energy. By creating routines and reducing choice, you can reduce that stress. 4. Make Time Stand Still - Identify ‘flow state' activities that make you lose track of time, and schedule them as investments in your happiness. 5. Seek Out Friction - If someone upsets you, ask yourself why their words affected you so much. Rewriting their story with compassion will increase your own sense of control. I hope this episode helps you and your family cultivate lasting happiness in 2026 and beyond. I explore all these ideas and many more in my newly formatted book Happy Mind Happy Life - available here as a paperback or as an audiobook, which I am narrating. Michael Rosen has known – and given – great joy in his life. And he has suffered immense sorrow. Rosen is an author, poet and former children's laureate, much-loved for his playful humour. He has written over 200 books, including the modern children's classic, We're Going on a Bear Hunt. In recent years, he has become an eloquent voice on grief and sadness, and how we deal with it. His powerful writing about the death of his son and his near-lethal battle with Covid became Getting Through It, an acclaimed one-man show exploring love, loss and mortality. In 2023 he was awarded the PEN Pinter prize for what judges called a ‘fearless' body of work that provides a ‘lesson in humanity.' In September 2025, he came to the Intelligence Squared stage to introduce his new book, Good Days: An A-Z of Hope and Happiness. He celebrated the small things that bring joy and happiness, and explores how we can live well, even through difficult times. Host Elle Osili Wood guided us through an inspiring conversation about grief, recovery, hope and how we can find meaning and happiness in everyday moments. -- If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more. A Taoist guide to parenting with trust instead of fear — so love flows without control, criticism, or comparison.Parenting often pulls us between overprotection and emotional distance — both driven by fear, not love. In this episode, we explore the Tao of parenting, the art of guiding without controlling, and how to raise resilient, confident children through trust, presence, and balance. The Pressure Paradox | Finding Joy in a Burnout CultureWe live in a "pressure cooker" culture. From financial stress to the pressure to perform, it often feels like the weight of the world is crushing us. But what if the answer isn't to build thicker skin, but to change what's inside? In this message, Pastor Charlie explores the "Pressure Paradox." Using a surprising lesson from the Mariana Snailfish—a creature that survives crushing depths not with armor, but with internal pressure—we discover how biblical Joy acts as a stabilizer for our souls. In this message, we cover:
Your creative expression is the gateway to your happiness, and yet many of us make very little time to do activities that enhance our creativity. For me, it's always been writing. I started as a girl and found great joy writing fiction and eventually memoir.I've been teaching writers for 30 years now (I can hardly believe it!) Over time, I've watched people find their flow, build their resilience, bust out of poor and unproductive habits … and it all stemmed from the joy of being creatively expressive with their writing. Some went on to publish their books and monetize their brands.I'd love to invite you to my upcoming writing class for all levels: How to Write Your Book beginning January 6, 2025Here are a few details about the course: — We will focus on crafting your story— We will meet for 12 weeks beginning January 6th— There will be at least 9 face-to-face meetings with me and the members of the class. "Happiness radiates out of people… your change is the most potent contribution you can make to global change." Hard times have a way of exposing what actually holds us together. When prices rise, headlines darken, and uncertainty becomes constant, willpower and positive thinking stop working. What matters then is whether you have an inner foundation that stays steady regardless of external pressure. This episode points to a different kind of strength—one that doesn't numb you to reality, but keeps you calm, clear, and grounded while everything else feels unstable. The conversation explores how inner states like peace, resilience, and clarity are not personality traits or spiritual gifts—they're trainable. There is a neurological threshold where fleeting moments of calm begin to lock in, where stress stops running the system, and where reactions soften into perspective. What's most compelling is how quickly this shift can begin, and how it changes the way people relate to money, conflict, fear, and even ambition during difficult seasons. Dr. Dawson is a researcher, author, and speaker known for bridging neuroscience with spiritual practice. He has written multiple bestselling books and founded an organization that has helped tens of thousands of veterans recover from PTSD. His work focuses on turning elevated inner states into something stable, practical, and usable—especially when life feels anything but easy. Take a few minutes to reflect on someone who inspires you, and how you can embody the values you admire in them. You can also listen to this episode in Spanish here: https://tinyurl.com/4rjmambmHow To Do This Practice: Find a quiet moment and settle your body: Sit or stand somewhere you feel safe and comfortable. Take a few slow breaths and let your body soften, releasing the noise of the day. Bring to mind someone who embodies “moral beauty”: Think of a person whose kindness, courage, humility, or integrity has genuinely inspired you. Choose one specific moment when their character moved you. Visualize an act that inspired you: Recall exactly what the person did. Picture the scene, their actions, their choices. Notice why this moment stood out as meaningful or brave or good. Notice how your body responds: As you hold this image, tune into your body: warmth, openness, tenderness, or even tears. Allow yourself to feel the emotional impact of their moral beauty. Reflect on why this matters to you: Ask yourself: What does this moment reveal about the values that matter most to me? What purpose does it awaken? What did this person teach me about how I want to live? Choose one small aligned action for today: Identify one thing you can do—big or small—that expresses the value or purpose this person embodies. Carry that intention with you into the rest of your day. The Love, Happiness and Success Podcast With Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby
If you've been hearing more about psychedelic therapy and wondering whether it's a genuine breakthrough for healing—or just the latest mental health trend—you're not alone. Many people feel curious, hopeful, and skeptical all at once. This conversation is meant to help you slow down, understand what the research actually shows, and think clearly about whether this path is right for you. In this episode of Love, Happiness and Success, I'm joined by psychiatrist and MDMA-assisted psychotherapist Dr. Scott Shannon, founder of Wholeness Center, the largest integrative mental health center in the U.S. Together, we talk about how psychedelic therapy works differently from conventional psychiatric treatment, why it can help disrupt rigid trauma patterns in the brain, and what researchers are learning about long-term healing—not just short-term symptom relief. We also spend time on the parts of this conversation that matter just as much: the risks, the ethical boundaries, and the importance of preparation, professional support, and integration. Psychedelic therapy isn't appropriate for everyone, and it isn't something to pursue casually or without careful guidance. This episode offers a grounded, responsible look at how people can think critically about safety, readiness, and what to look for in a qualified provider. As you listen, I invite you to reflect on a few questions: What kind of healing are you actually looking for? What does feeling “better” really mean to you? And how do you decide which growth paths deserve your trust, time, and care? Episode Breakdown: 00:00 Psychedelic therapy explained: promise, research, and real risks 02:31 Why psychedelic therapy differs from traditional psychiatric medication 04:55 Trauma, brain patterns, and how psychedelic therapy disrupts stuck loops 07:00 MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD and why healing can continue long after treatment 12:21 A paradigm shift in mental health: supporting the brain's capacity to heal 19:30 What MDMA actually does in therapy: safety, self-compassion, and trauma processing 25:47 Mystical experience, meaning, and the spiritual dimension of psychedelic therapy 30:09 Ethical concerns, safety risks, and how to evaluate psychedelic therapy providers 38:00 Preparation and integration: why psychedelic therapy is more than the experience itself If this conversation leaves you thinking about your own healing or growth, I want to be clear that Growing Self does not offer psychedelic therapy. What we do offer is thoughtful, evidence-based therapy and coaching for people who want to grow with intention and care. If you'd like, I'd love to help you think through what kind of support would actually be most helpful for you. I've created a simple, private way to do that. By answering just a few quick questions, we can help match you with the right therapist or coach for a complimentary consultation—someone who understands what you're navigating and where you'd like to go next. Schedule a free consultation today. Consider it a small gift from me, and a gentle next step if you're ready for one. xoxo, Dr. Lisa Marie BobbyGrowing Self
I walk my dogs three times a day. Same times. Every single day. It started once. Now it's a tradition. My dogs look at me like it's the law. Traditions aren't just for holidays. They're the secret sauce that makes life special all year long. But somebody has to make them. My neighbor Janice spends weeks decorating her house for Christmas. She's not just doing it for herself. She's making Christmas for everyone in the neighborhood. Think about it. How many people are making traditions for you right now? And how many are you making for others? Featured Story My wife and I were walking the dogs when we stopped at Janice's house. She was finishing up her Christmas decorations. Everything perfectly placed. Lights everywhere. The kind of display that makes you wonder where she stores it all. I told her it looked like a lot of work. She said yeah, it takes a couple weeks. But it's her tradition. She loves doing it. Then I said something that caught her off guard: "Thank you for making Christmas for the rest of us." She didn't know what to say. She was out there doing what she loves, creating this tradition for her family. She wasn't thinking about the neighborhood waiting for her lights to go up. But that's exactly what we do. Important Points Traditions are the secret sauce that makes life easier and creates emotional connections, not just during holidays but throughout the entire year. Somebody has to make the tradition, and the makers are the ones who create special moments for everyone around them without even realizing it. Traditions are just like habits and rituals, they make our lives more fulfilling, but you have to decide to be the person who creates them. Memorable Quotes "Traditions are a secret sauce. And it's not just the holidays, you had traditions in almost everything." "Thank you for making Christmas for the rest of us." "Whether it's Christmas or New Year's or any other time of the year, traditions are the same as habits and rituals. They make our lives more fulfilling, but always remember somebody has to make that tradition." Scott's Three-Step Approach Notice who's making traditions for you right now and actually thank them for it, because most people don't realize they're creating something special for everyone around them. Decide to be a maker yourself and create traditions throughout the year, not just holidays, because that's where the real spice of life lives. Understand that one time becomes all the time, so start something worth repeating and let it become the fabric of your life. Chapter Notes 1:37 - Do you have traditions or change it up? 2:38 - Why traditions fuel emotional connection 3:26 - When the pandemic killed our traditions 4:29 - The makers who create everything special 5:34 - Walking dogs became a daily tradition 6:44 - Janice and the Christmas lights revelation 8:35 - Making traditions every single day Connect With Me Search for the Daily Boost on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify Email: support@motivationtomove.com Main Website: https://motivationtomove.com YouTube: https://youtube.com/dailyboostpodcast Instagram: @heyscottsmith Facebook Page: https://facebook.com/motivationtomove Learn more about your ad choices. --- This is the first instalment of a two-part episode. What if the year ahead isn't something you survive but something you intentionally design? As we close out this MAXOUT Your Mind Masterclass series, I want to talk to you about something that might be the most important skill you can develop going into 2026: designing your life on purpose. Too many people drift into a new year hoping things change instead of deciding what they will change. In this final masterclass, I walk you through how to step back, take inventory of your life, and consciously choose what stays, what goes, and what gets rebuilt. I break down the difference between inventing and reinventing your life and why both matter. Your body is constantly renewing itself, shedding old cells and rebuilding new ones. Your mind and spirit deserve the same intentional renewal. I challenge you to stop living on autopilot and start asking better questions. What do you want to feel when you wake up? What kind of progress excites you? What are you actually looking forward to? Because progress creates power, and having something meaningful to move toward is one of the greatest sources of happiness we have. We also talk about why living fully present does not mean abandoning the future. Human beings need something to look forward to. I explain why growth, momentum, and forward vision fuel fulfillment and how chasing progress releases more joy than the moment of achievement itself. If you feel stuck, bored, or disconnected, it might not be because something is wrong with you. It might be because you stopped designing your life and started repeating it. This episode goes deeper into what real happiness and fulfillment actually are. Happiness is fleeting. Fulfillment is lasting. I introduce the concept of blissful dissatisfaction, which allows you to love your life today while still being hungry to grow. We talk about self worth, identity, vulnerability, and why you must be willing to fully engage with your dreams even when there is risk. Playing small protects nothing and costs everything. As you head into 2026, this is your invitation to become the co author of your life again. You are not behind. You are not broken. You are capable of more than you think. This masterclass will help you raise your standards, renew your mindset, and step into the next chapter with clarity, courage, and conviction. The year ahead does not need to be a repeat of the last one. You get to design it. Key Takeaways Why designing your life is a responsibility, not a luxury The difference between happiness and fulfillment and how to build both How progress and growth create lasting motivation and joy What blissful dissatisfaction really means and why it prevents burnout How self worth, vulnerability, and identity shape your results Practical questions to help you intentionally design your best year yet This is the foundation for 2026. Let's build it the right way. Max out. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Happiness is the subject of thousands of articles, podcasts, and scientific studies. Yet all this focus on happiness doesn't seem to be making people any happier. In fact, the more they try to be happy, especially by fighting to get rid of bad feelings and cling to good ones, the more unhappy people often become. My guest would say that the first step in escaping this negative cycle is redefining what happiness even means — thinking of it not as a state of feeling good but of doing good. His name is Russ Harris and he's a therapist and the author of The Happiness Trap.Today on the show, Russ explains how struggling against difficult feelings and thoughts just makes them stronger — amplifying instead of diminishing stress, anxiety, depression, and self-consciousness — and how simply obeying your emotions doesn't work out any better. He then unpacks the alternative approach to happiness espoused by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. With ACT, you allow both hard and pleasant feelings to coexist, and unhook from the latter so that they no longer jerk you around. This allows you to focus on taking action on your values to create a meaningful, flourishing life, or in other words, real happiness.Resources Related to the EpisodeAoM Podcast #614: Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life With the Founder of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Steven HayesAoM Article: From Overwhelmed to Empowered — How Labeling Your Emotions Can Help You Take ControlConnect With Russ HarrisRuss' WebsiteSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
