Co-Host of The West Coast Poplock Podcast.https://www.instagram.com/thatdudejohnnyc/https://lnk.bio/wcppEver been sideswiped by the unexpected detonation of nostalgia? That's what happened when Johnny C joined us, sending us on a roaring trip through holiday misadventures and the echoes of childhood snacks, from the sizzle of Hot Pockets to the chill of Otter Pops. Our feast of memories takes you on a firsthand journey from relishing first-class wonders to connecting over the shared and sometimes hilarious confusion of ice cream sampling etiquette – because let's face it, we've all calculated the perfect number of free tastes before picking a scoop. But wait, there's more than just food on this menu. We're serving up a slice of the vibrant tapestry that is American culture, from the eye-catching threads of themed restaurant staff to the high-stakes hilarity of unsolicited "artistic" communications. Take a road trip with us to Vegas, where friendships are forged in the neon lights, and learn the peculiar dance of navigating loud chats and rage rooms – America's own unique symphony of breaking things to find peace.Get ready to split your sides as we dissect the evolving scene of modern comedy, meet the challenge of hecklers head-on, and share the all-too-real sagas from dark corners of tattoo shops. Through the lens of laughter, we probe into the complexities of self-expression, the often overlooked emotional labor in the service and art industries, and the unexpected journeys of those around us. It's all about the journey – join us, and Johnny C, as we peel back the curtain on these vibrant escapades.Subscribe to The Mindbuzz Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIYj7eDCsV3YPzxv7VRKZKg Don't forget to follow us on Instagram @themindbuzz https://www.instagram.com/themindbuzz/ to keep up with our hosts, guests, and upcoming events! Welcome to July 8th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate mighty fruits and staying cool.   They say good things come in small packages and this is especially true of blueberries. Not only are they a popular fruit, blueberries are one of the healthiest things you can eat. This superfood provides more antioxidants than almost any other fruit or vegetable, and has been linked to reducing cholesterol. And while you could go on and on, the fact is blueberries are just plain delicious. There's a reason why these juicy berries get a whole month of celebration. You don't hear people getting excited about broccoli season. During National Blueberry Month check your local farmer's market for this super snack or better yet, find a patch and pick your own.  Flavored sugar water in a plastic tube hardly sounds like a crowd pleaser. But on a hot summer day, there are few things better than a freezer pop. These frozen treats have been around since the 1960s and are a staple for kids around the world who wanna stay cool. Fla-Vor-Ice is the most popular brand, but you may also know them as Otter Pops, Freezies, or even Zooper Doopers. And if you happen to live down under you probably don't celebrate your Zooper Doopers till December, when it's Summertime in Australia. In fact you might even leave a few out for Santa. The rest of us are keeping it cool by celebrating National Freezer Pop Day in July I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day! As long-time listeners know, GamerDude grew up when things were very different in the world. Some of the things that he accepted as "normal" when he was growing up would undoubtedly seem "weird" by today's standards. Some things, like kids having household chores, ice cream trucks, and riding on the front of shopping carts in the supermarket, is part of the evolution of parenting and society. Other things, like tube socks and sweat bands, are things that simply were a bit odd. GamerDude talks about all of these things, and also discusses other weirdness from when he was growing up. He talks about pet rocks and mood rings. He discusses how the Viewmaster could give you windows on places you might never get to in real life. He also talks about playgrounds, and the things he played on as a kid, from merry-go-rounds to swings to see-saws. He also remembers ice pops; whether you called it Flav-Or-Ice, or Otter Pops, or Pop Ice, GamerDude talks about how the weird little sleeves of frozen, sweetened, flavored water were around when he was a kid, and how they're still around today.

Everyday Rockstar (0:00:00) Lisa and Richie talk with this week's featured Everyday Rockstar. You can nomination yourself or someone you love by emailing thelisashow@byu.edu.   Confronting Racism in the Workplace (0:07:29) Whether we'd like to admit it or not, racism can still be found in our society. One of the more difficult places it pops up at is the workplace, where paychecks and job security could be on the line for saying something you shouldn't. But if we genuinely believe in fairness and justice for all, we have to work harder to make our work environments safer for everyone and call out prejudice when we see it. So, when it comes to being more inclusive, how can we take discussions about racism and turn them into action? Today, we're joined by Trudy Bourgeois, CEO of Workforce Excellence, here with us to discuss ways we can cut racism out of our workplace.   Murder Mystery Party (0:27:35) What do Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan, and John Grisham all have in common? Murder mysteries of course! And if you've ever wanted to be included on that list, well now you can be! And while murder mystery parties have been around since the early 20th century, they are now more options than ever for writing and hosting your own murder mystery dinner parties. Here to answer all our murder mystery party questions about writing your own script, proper hosting etiquette, or choosing a dinner party to play is founder and CEO of award-winning Red Herring Games, Jo Smedley.   Connecting Through Passion (0:41:53) There are a lot of problems associate with 2020 and no matter who you are we've all been affected by at least this one: loneliness. It's hard to feel separated and isolated from those you love, however feeling lonely isn't a problem unique to 2020. We can often feel that we are on the outside and that we haven't found our tribe yet. So, what can we do to reach out and build relationships despite distance or quarantines? To help us out we've Spencer Smith onto the show. 7 years ago, he became a founding member of the Major League Soccer Discussion Group and through shared passion help built, one of the biggest American soccer loving community on the internet.   Emotionally Healthy Kids (1:00:12) Kids are the greatest joys in life, but when those tantrums start—it can be difficult to remember that. Children feel things deeply, but they don't often have the right tools to express those feelings, which can result in things like temper tantrums or hurt feelings. We want our kids to be able to express themselves. So, what can we do to help give them the tools to do so? Here to share her advice with us is Maureen Healy—a children's emotional health expert.   Skincare Ingredients (1:11:09) The ingredient list on any item can be long, daunting, and confusing. For skincare products, it's even worse. Long names ending in -oxy and -acid and -quinone seem like meaningless gibberish to the untrained eye. And then, even if you do know what one of the ingredients is and what it does, you don't know how it works with your other skincare products. All in all, it can make creating a skincare routine confusing, daunting, and potentially painful if done wrong. Here to decode the ingredients in skincare and to help us know what to look for and what to avoid is Colette Laxton, CEO and co-founder of the InKey List, a revolutionary skincare brand.   You Are What Your Grandparents Ate (1:29:18) If you are what you eat, then what are you right now? Fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden? The whole rainbow of Otter Pops maybe? Our whole lives, we hear about how our eating and exercise choices affect our health and well-being. But, have you ever considered how your choices affect the health of your kids and future grandkids? As it turns out, the results of your bad eating or exercise habits might be passed on to your posterity. Today, we've invited Judith Finlayson, author of “You Are What Your Grandparents Ate,” on the show to tell us how our habits and environment affect the health of future generations.

After over a year, Sharon and Sean revisit the topic of subway ad campaigns. In a conveniently topical coincidence, they start off the episode discussing Otter Pops, which Sean has never heard of before, growing up in New England where Fla-Vor-Ice was king of the freeze pop market. Sharon relishes enlightening Sean on the joys of Otter Pops and consumes half a dozen of them in the process. (Similar to Seamless and Grubhub, Otter Pops and Fla-Vor-Ice are apparently owned by the same company - who knew!  https://www.eater.com/2018/8/21/17660626/freeze-pops-ice-otter-pops) If the freeze pops aren't enough to entice you, you'll definitely want to listen to hear Sharon and Sean's latest take on some of the more recent subway ad campaigns, including one that has a deep cut reference to an NYC occurrence that they discussed on an episode earlier this year! During News of the Week, Sean shares distressing news that the MTA Board is making moves to strip our beloved Andy Byford of control of crucial capital projects. Sharon then lightens the mood with a story about a rogue slug disrupting travel for 12 thousand straphangers in Japan. In the anecdote, Sean tells the tale of a surprise encounter with a character from Astoria #BusLyfe in an unexpected place.  Also, Sean struggles with a mystery delivery at work.
