Send us a textSally K. Norton shares her powerful journey from health-conscious eater to chronically ill patient, and the surprising discovery that changed everything. After decades of unexplained pain, surgeries, and symptoms that baffled doctors, Sally found that the real culprit was oxalates—compounds found in popular “superfoods” like spinach, almonds, and sweet potatoes. These molecules can crystallize in the body, causing inflammation and tissue damage. Ironically, those most committed to eating clean may suffer the most. Sally breaks down how oxalates build up over time, why they affect people differently, and why standard blood tests usually miss them. This episode offers practical advice on identifying high-oxalate foods, transitioning to a lower-oxalate diet, and rethinking common beliefs around food. From fruit and coffee to why milk chocolate may be a better choice than dark, Sally offers a science-backed perspective that could be the missing piece in your health puzzle.Connect with Sally:@sknorton@toxicsuperfoods_oxalate_bookhttps://sallyknorton.com/YouTube Channel Toxic Superfoods: How Oxalate Overload Is Making You Sick--and How to Get BetterFacebookX (Twitter) Support the showPRIMAL FOUNDATIONS PODCAST-Instagram: @Tony_PrimalFoundationsWebsite: Primalfoundations.com The Strength Kollective: Download Kettlebell Programs (Click Here)Book a free 30 minutes consultation (Click Here)

Today, I am blessed to have Sally K. Norton here with me. Her book, “Toxic Superfoods: How Oxalate Overload is Making You Sick-and How to Get Better” is available everywhere books are sold. For more information, visit SallyKNorton.com or follow Sally on YouTube and social media. She's @sknorton and @toxicsuperfoods_oxalate_book (on Instagram), @BeFreeToThrive (on Facebook), and @BetterLowOx (on X). In this episode, Sally emphasizes that several foods commonly considered healthy, such as nuts, dark leafy greens, sweet potatoes, quinoa, and even bran, may actually be harmful due to their high oxalate content. Oxalates, particularly oxalic acid found in plants, can disrupt cellular function by causing oxidative stress, inflammation, and damage to tissues. The accumulation of calcium oxalate can interfere with metabolism, vascular health, and electrolyte balance, leading to various health issues like digestive problems, joint pain, urinary tract infections, and kidney stones. Sally also explains that our modern, non-seasonal diet exacerbates this issue, as we consume these foods year-round without giving our bodies time to recover. Sally says that tea significantly contributes to oxalate intake due to its fully soluble oxalic acid content, making it both quickly absorbed and harmful. However, Sally mentions that in moderation, tea can be used medicinally to help the body manage oxalate release from tissues. She advises that dietary changes should be gradual, allowing the body time to adjust to avoid overwhelming it. She emphasizes that dealing with oxalate accumulation is a long-term process influenced by individual nutrition and lifestyle factors. Sally advises that low oxalate carbs, such as white rice, are generally well-tolerated, especially for those with gut inflammation. She notes that white rice has resistant starch, which may be problematic for those with severe digestive issues. Cutting out fiber can also reduce pain and inflammation, making a carnivore diet appealing to some. Sally also highlights that juicing fruits, especially those high in oxalates like raspberries and pomegranates, can significantly reduce their oxalate content. She recommends eating nutrient-dense animal foods, taking breaks from constant grazing, and returning to traditional meal times for metabolic freedom. Was Popeye wrong about spinach? Could an overabundance of “healthy” foods be harming your health? Oxalates are natural compounds found in vegetables, fruits, nuts, and grains and are naturally created in the body as a waste product. They are not metabolized by the body and can prevent the absorption of important minerals. Eating a diet high in oxalates can injure the mitochondria, produce mineral deficiencies, contribute to kidney stones, and lead to a host of other symptoms. Join Dr. Donald Ellsworth and Director of New Guest Success, Jill Hartland, BSN, RN as they discuss oxalates and how they affect the body. Learn about the symptoms of high oxalates, how to balance out your diet, and ways to decrease your body's absorption of oxalates. If you're just not feeling well and there are no explanations, think about oxalates! Sometimes too much of a good thing could be a bad thing! Richard Smith believes that potassium citrate supplementation can help manage oxalate dumping and fight calcium oxalate stone formation. Sally K Norton is on the show to talk about oxalates and how they can wreak havoc on our bodies. She recommends caution when it comes to tinkering with our calcium intake and recommends a book as a great resource for further learning. High oxalate intake causes the kidneys to waste sodium which contributes to keto flu and kidney stones, and clearing oxalates is important to maintain good health long-term. Sally and both the hosts believe that people are finally realizing that meat isn't what's causing their health problems and they're also beginning to supplement with electrolytes, magnesium, and calcium. Excess sodium depletes potassium, which can lead to all of these other issues. When eating a low carb ketogenic diet, it's important to keep an eye on electrolytes to make sure that we're not losing any essential minerals.Sally's book Toxic Superfoods is now available.Order via the Affiliate Link on Amazon https://amzn.to/3T2b2Dqwww.sallyknorton.comInstagram: @sknortonFor more information, visit SallyKNorton.com or follow Sally on social media. Sally K Norton offers advice for everyday people who want to be healthier and lessen their risk for chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and kidney stones. Sally mentions that Vitamin C, collagen, and other supplements can increase endogenous oxalate production.Gout is an inflammatory reaction to crystals, and oxalates can be a big part of it. Calcium supplementation is not always necessary for breaking down oxalates, but it is an effective way to improve overall health. oxalic dumping is an extreme event of purging from the tissues. The way you would know that oxalates are the source of your pain and fatigue is that you might see some outward signs like cloudy urine or tartar in the teeth. If you're clearing quickly, you may experience gritty or burning stools, skin things like rashes and boils, or bone pain, you may want to slow this down. Adding oxalate every day can help achieve this? Oxalate is a natural compound. Plants make it. It's in nature and lots of places, and it's toxic when you eat too much of it. Oxalates are found in many different foods, but notable sources include sweet potatoes, spinach, rhubarb, and strawberries. Oxalate can form kidney stones when consumed in high amounts. If you're a kidney stone patient, it's important to limit your intake of oxalates. If you're not a kidney stone patient, it's still important to watch your intake of oxalates because they can form in many different foods. Enlightened nutritionists can provide advice on how to eat healthily and reduce your risk for chronic diseases.Sally's book via the Affiliate Link on Amazon https://amzn.to/3T2b2Dqwww.sallyknorton.comInstagram: @sknorton and @toxicsuperfoods_oxalate_book, @BeFreeToThrive (on Facebook), Better with Sally K. The First Lady of Nutrition Podcast with Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D., C.N.S.
Can a plant heavy diet be toxic? The surprising answer is YES according to Sally Norton who has uncovered oxalates, those culprits in plants which are often found lurking within organic plant heavy diets. Join Ann Louise Gittleman, the First Lady of Nutrition, as she delves into a thought-provoking conversation with Sally Norton, a distinguished educator, speaker, and health consultant. After suffering for decades from chronic health problems, Sally discovered that the offenders that plagued her were chemical toxins called oxalates within her “healthy,” organic plant-based regimen. Ann Louise and Sally waste no time in diving into a fascinating discussion as to how the foods you're eating to get healthy might just be making you sick! According to Norton, if you're eating a healthy diet and you're still dealing with fatigue, inflammation, anxiety, recurrent injuries, or chronic pain, the problem could be your spinach, almonds, sweet potatoes, and other trusted plant foods. And your key to vibrant health may be quitting these so-called superfoods that are filled with oxalates. In her 2023 blockbuster book, “Toxic Superfoods: How Oxalate Overload Is Making You Sick--and How to Get Better” Norton presents a complete, research-backed program to safely reverse your oxalate load and comprehensive charts and resources on foods to avoid and better alternatives. As Ann Louise and Sally conclude, the popular dictum to "eat more plants” can be misleading. “Toxic Superfoods” gives health-seekers a chance for improved energy, optimum brain performance, graceful aging, and true relief from chronic pain. Sally Norton is an educator, speaker and health consultant who specialises in the impact of oxalates in the human diet. Sally has a bachelor's degree in nutritional science from Cornell University and her master's degree in public health from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Sally's own health journey lead her to the realisation that many foods that are considered to be among the healthiest, actually contain a metabolic toxin that even in modest amounts can cause illness and disease.-Oxalates are compounds made by plants for various purposes including calcium homeostasis, structural integrity and to ward off insects. This seemingly innocuous compound bind with minerals, particularly calcium and creates oxalate crystals, known to most as kidney stones. Oxalates inhibit energy metabolism and impede normal cellular functioning when consumed in amounts that exceed the body's capacity to detoxify it. Unfortunately in today's diet culture world of spinach, sweet potato, kale, chard, cacao and raspberries, many people who think they are doing the best thing for their health are slowly but surely poisoning themselves with oxalates.-Sally's Book: "Toxic Superfoods"Sally's Website-Follow My WorkWebsiteConsultationInstagramYoutubeSpotifyApple PodcastsLinkedin

So many innocent-looking "healthy" foods (even so-called "superfoods") could be actually compromising your health! Carrots, beets, spinach, and cashews, for example. These plant foods, and others, contain oxalates that trigger inflammation, steal minerals, destroy connective tissue and lead to a host of problems like kidney stones, arthritis, joint pain, osteoporosis, and oxidative stress in the body. Sally Norton, the author of Toxic Superfoods: How Oxalate Overload Is Making You Sick--and How to Get Better today reviews which foods to avoid (including potatoes, figs, nuts, some berries, and, yes, even chocolate) and what to do if you have symptoms of oxalate overload. God lytt biohackere!! Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Toni: My son, who is 36 years old is having severe hives and woke up today with a swollen face and lips. He went to the doctor and they gave him a steroid shot and hydroxyzine. They of course did not try to get the the root of the problem. These break outs have been going on with increased severity for three weeks. The rash seems to be deep, starting out as dots and becoming one huge whelp. He did discover that the laundry soap, containing lavender was a major irritant but even after eliminating this, the hives continue to get worse. Thank you in advance for answering this question! Lori: Hello, I came across your podcast on liver detoxification and found it really enlightening. I located the detox you sell on your website and noticed the high level of vit b-6, which is common in so many supplements. I struggle to understand this phenomenon. The recommended daily amount is between 1-3 mg yet every supplement contains 50mg or more. In Europe the upper limit is 30mg and there have been cases of toxicity reported at low levels. I'd love more information on the consumption of this particular vitamin, as I know it is really important. Thank you! Summer: Hi Doc! I really like the ayurvedic "diagnostics" =) podcasts! I have found that when I search these charts online that they are all different... Would you be willing to post examples of the most accurate charts you've seen from your experience? I saw there is a chart on the tongue podcast page, but I would love a tongue chart that links up symptoms to visible signs on the tongue, a facial diagnostic chart, and a fingernail chart. Hoping to get some clarity! Thanks for all you do! Summer Karen: I have a friend that keeps getting cancer, how can I help her get rid of it for good. She is done with chemo and radiation, they are no longer working. Thank you Stacey: Hi Dr. Cabral I have a quick question on your opinion of high Oxalate foods .. I feel I may have an allergy to them so I bought the book Toxic Superfoods by Sally K. Norton and it's making a lot of sense . I also have to stay away from high histamine foods do to MCAS. My ability to eat an assortment of food is becoming smaller and smaller . I have ran the big 5 and removed the allergy foods but I'm sensitive to other foods that did not show up on the allergy test . I love your DNS shake and drink it every morning but I've been noticing I'm still very bloated every day . Im confused on what my body can even tolerate now . The big 5 did not show Candida issues . Should I try removing all high Oxalate foods for a period of time in your opinion ? Thanks so much ! Grandpa Bill today asks: Sally Norton will be answering the following questions when she joins me in studio 3/9/23 What are oxalates and why are they so bad? What are some signs you've eaten too many oxalates? You say people eat tons of oxalates and don't even realize it…which foods are the highest in oxalates? Nutrition & Public Health Expert / Author of "Toxic Superfoods: How Oxalate Overload Is Making You Sick and How to Get Better" About Sally “My favorite health foods were actually making me sick!” -ONE WOMAN'S BATTLE (& RECOVERY) FROM OXALATE OVERLOAD- Sally K. Norton should have been the picture of health. She exercised regularly; did yoga; and ate a well-researched diet chock full of wholesome, nutritious foods. She even had an ivy league degree in nutrition. …But her health was far from fabulous. She suffered from several physical and cognitive impairments including chronic fatigue, joint pain, and a severe sleep disorder. Doctors couldn't figure out why someone so young and “healthy” could be so unwell. Sally never imagined that her health problems could be related to her beloved health foods. After her career in health research and medical education ended due to her worsening condition, Sally finally connected the dots and recovered her health by lowering her oxalate intake. “My favorite health foods (sweet potatoes and swiss chard) were making me sick all along! I had oxalate overload,” says Norton. “Many superfoods are high in oxalic acid, an organic compound which has been linked to numerous mental and physical health problems.” Sally's story is not unique. “Oxalate Overload” is a condition whose prevalence has skyrocketed in the era of green smoothies, chia bowls, and nut-based plant beverages. Several celebrities including Liam Hemsworth have recently come forward with Oxalate Overload horror stories. As a leading expert on oxalates in food, Sally has developed a loyal, devoted following on social media for helping people finally find relief. Norton's forthcoming book “Toxic Superfoods” examines common dietary mistakes, why we're overlooking the oxalate problem, and what you can do about it. In an interview or article, Norton can share her personal story, FASCINATING FACTS about food, nutrition, and what to eat for optimal health. If you're eating a healthy diet and you're still dealing with fatigue, inflammation, anxiety, recurrent injuries, or chronic pain, the problem could be your spinach, almonds, sweet potatoes, and other trusted plant foods. And your key to vibrant health may be quitting these so-called superfoods. After suffering for decades from chronic health problems, nutrition educator Sally K. Norton, MPH, discovered that the culprits were the chemical toxins called oxalates lurking within her “healthy,” organic plant-heavy diet. She shines light on how our modern diets are overloaded with oxalates and offers fresh solutions including:• A complete, research-backed program to safely reverse your oxalate load• Comprehensive charts and resources on foods to avoid and better alternatives• Guidance to improve your energy, optimize mood and brain performance, and find true relief from chronic pain In this groundbreaking guide, Norton reveals that the popular dictum to “eat more plants” can be misleading. Toxic Superfoods gives health-seekers a chance for improved energy, optimum brain performance, graceful aging, and true relief from chronic pain.

There are some health issues that come from where you least expect it!In this episode, Kashif is joined by Ivy-league Nutritionist Sally K. Norton, MPH. The term superfoods is usually known to refer to food that keep us healthy but what if these superfoods actually do the exact opposite? That is where Sally and Kashif's discussion dive into as they delve into what these superfoods contain. Oxalate is the specific chemical that may be found in food. It is rarely discussed but it greatly impacts our health as soon as it diffuses into our body's cells. Some of the aspects that oxalates may affect include membrane damage, oxidative strains on cells, inflammation, metabolism, and the lining of the gut. When these go unnoticed they may lead to fibrosis, cyst problems, and other autoimmune problems. With this in mind, Kashif and Sally touched on the following points to contribute to the knowledge of why it is important to be keen on what we consume:Toxic Superfoods such as almonds, chocolates, pseudo-grains, and some vegetables. How molds produce oxalateOxalate solubility and its relation to health and oxalate poisoningSally's pantry and food intake adviceWays to get around oxalated foodWhen symptoms show and the actions that must be takenHow to be mindful of mistakes and evaluating your overall consumption throughout your whole lifeYou may learn more from Sally from the following channels: Visit SallyKNorton.comSubscribe to Sally on YouTubeFollow Sally at @sknorton and @toxicsuperfoods_oxalate_book (on Instagram), @BeFreeToThrive (on Facebook), and @BetterLowOx (on Twitter.) Doctors may also recommend “low-oxalate diets” of less than 50 milligrams daily for some people, WebMD reports. “My favorite health foods were actually making me sick!” -ONE WOMAN'S BATTLE (& RECOVERY) FROM OXALATE OVERLOAD- Sally K. Toxic Superfoods: How Oxalate Overload Is Making You Sick--and How to Get Better by Sally K. Norton MPH An acclaimed nutrition educator reveals how the foods you're eating to get healthy might be making you sick. “Sally Norton's well-researched book makes a truly important contribution to the literature in revealing just how much oxalates can damage the human body.”—Nina Teicholz, author of The Big Fat Surprise If you're eating a healthy diet and you're still dealing with fatigue, inflammation, anxiety, recurrent injuries, or chronic pain, the problem could be your spinach, almonds, sweet potatoes, and other trusted plant foods. She shines light on how our modern diets are overloaded with oxalates and offers fresh solutions including: • A complete, research-backed program to safely reverse your oxalate load • Comprehensive charts and resources on foods to avoid and better alternatives • Guidance to improve your energy, optimize mood and brain performance, and find true relief from chronic pain In this groundbreaking guide, Norton reveals that the popular dictum to “eat more plants” can be misleading. Toxic Superfoods gives health-seekers a chance for improved energy, optimum brain performance, graceful aging, and true relief from chronic pain.

Monique Attinger BA, MLIS, CHN is a certified holistic nutritionist who is world renowned expert on the plant compound called oxalate. On social media and on her website, she is known as the Low Ox Coach. She is your partner in reaching your health goals through a focus on reducing your oxalate intake, in combination with high density nutrition and targeted nutritional supplements. Sometimes, reducing oxalate alone is not enough; Monique's clientele includes many with complex dietary challenges, including the overlap of individual food sensitivities or allergies with other therapeutic diets, including low histamine and low salicylate approaches. Monique's coaching helps her clients who have been “eating extra healthy”, some who have spent decades following careful eating plans, yet also find that they were not feeling well. Many chronic diseases have an inflammatory component, and oxalate can be an unrecognized driver, severely affecting people without them knowing the cause.
