There are very few places as divisive in today's church as the potluck lunch. When visitors come to our churches we are likely to hear them proclaim about their food orthodoxy before they say anything about their theology or church background. Tim and Andrew offer some helpful commentary about how to keep food from dividing the church. Show NotesThe man Tim was trying to remember mentioned during the recording was Jerome Irving Rodale founder of the magazine, Organic Farming and Gardening, and also Rodale Press. The talk show host Dick Cavett tells the story:MAY 3, 2007, 6:33 PMWhen That Guy Died on My Show (interview with Dick Cavett)When I'm doing an appearance somewhere and taking questions from the audience, I can always count on: “Tell about the guy who died on your show!” I generally say, “I will, and I promise you that in a few moments you will be laughing.” (That gets a laugh.) I go on: “First, who would be the logical person to drop dead on a television show? A health expert.” (Laugh.) I go on to explain that he was Jerome I. Rodale, the publisher of (among other things) Today's Health Magazine. (Laugh.) The irony gets thicker. He'd been on the cover of The New York Times Magazine that Sunday, and we needed one more guest. He was a slight man, and looked like Leon Trotsky with the little goatee. He was extremely funny for half an hour, talking about health foods, and as a friendly gesture he offered me some of his special asparagus, boiled in urine. I think I said, “Anybody's we know?” while making a mental note to have him back.I brought out the next guest, Pete Hamill, whose column ran in The New York Post. Rodale moved “down one” to the couch. As Pete and I began to chat, Mr. Rodale suddenly made a snoring sound, which got a laugh.Comics would sometimes do that for a laugh while another comic was talking, pretending boredom. His head tilted to the side as Pete, in close-up as it happened, whispered audibly, “This looks bad.”The audience laughed at that. I didn't, because I knew Rodale was dead.To this day, I don't know how I knew. I thought, “Good God, I'm in charge here. What do I do?” Next thing I knew I was holding his wrist, thinking, I don't know anything about what a wrist is supposed to feel like.Next, in what felt like a quick film cut, I was standing at the edge of the stage, saying, “Is there a doctor in the … (pause) … audience?”Two medical interns scrambled onto the stage. The next “shot” that I recall was of Rodale flat on the floor. The interns had loosened his shirt and his pants, and were working on him. He was the ghastly pale of a plumber's candle.Other memories that seem to come in stop-frame sequence:- Two stewardesses in the front row who'd been winking and joking with me during the commercial breaks were now crying. I guess from their training and having seen emergencies, they knew the score.- Watching the awareness that this might just be real start to roll backward through the audience. Their reluctant awareness that this was not part of the show.- A camera man standing on his tiptoes, his camera pointing almost straight down on Rodale and the “action.”- Someone running onstage with a small tank of oxygen with a crucial part missing.- The bizarre feeling of denial that this must be part of the show. After all, we were in makeup and there were stage lights and a band and an audience that had been laughing and clapping only moments earlier.- Pete Hamill amidst the turmoil, as an ambulance crew arrived, calmly and professionally making notes in his reporter's notebook. (He got a memorable column for the next day.)- Finding myself in a fog in my dressing room, discovering a few strange objects in my pocket that someone must have handed me. A ChapStick, a watch and some keys, clearly from the dead man's pockets.- A voice in the alley as I got in the car: “Hey, Dick, was that for real?”I went home and looked up Robert Frost's poem “Out, Out —,” which contains the words, “… And they, since they/ Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs.”The next morning, I called my mentor and former boss, Johnny Carson. The story was all over the news. I asked Johnny how I could ever do another show. “It's like Kennedy's death, isn't it, Richard?” he said. “You wondered how anybody could ever do another show. This won't sound very profound but you just go out and do it. And you'll get a couple of surprises.”That night I told the whole story in the (comedy) monologue spot. No laughs then. I dreaded coming back from commercial. No one referred to the tragic happening, and everything meant to be funny got what seemed clearly to be larger than usual laughs. This, it turned out, was the main surprise Johnny knew was in store for me. Everyone was eager to get back to laughs. This is the topper: Upon warily deciding to view the sorry event a few weeks later, along with my staff, we noticed three things that, incredibly, no one had recalled Rodale's saying: “I'm in such good health [he was 72] that I fell down a long flight of stairs yesterday and I laughed all the way.” “I've decided to live to be a hundred.” And the inevitable “I never felt better in my life!” (The gods and their sense of humor.)From accessed February 17, 2024.Out of Our Minds Podcast: Pastors who say what they think. When you sit down to write your copy, do you shake in fear because of the terror of the blank page? Or, maybe you're not terrified, but you're frustrated because you don't know where to start? Today we talk about a game-changing method developed by one of our industry's great Old Masters, Eugene Schwartz. He delivered a powerful secret in an obscure talk he gave in the early 1990s to Rodale Press. You won't find this secret in either of his landmark books, Breakthrough Advertising or the Brilliance Breakthrough. The secret is explained in these words from his talk: “You do not write copy. You assemble it. You ware working with a series of building blocks and putting the building blocks together, putting them in certain structures. You're building a little city of desire for your person to come and live in. You are assembling claims that are simply images that people will pay for.” The key idea here is assembling, not writing. And that's a very important insight. Which we'll really get into today. Main topics: Confounding behaviors Mental game of preparedness Misconceptions of first aid Pilling Cats Main takeaway: We can't prepare for everything, but attention to detail, and the right resources, will set you up for success. About our guest: Arden grew up in a Brady Bunch-like family in a town called Crown Point located near Chicago in Northwest Indiana. During her first year in high school, she cajoled the editor of the local weekly newspaper into hiring her to be a sports writer. As a corn-fed Hoosier, she valued her Midwest roots, but knew she needed to experience other places. Her insatiable curiosity led to spending the next 20 years chasing stories as a reporter and editor for daily newspapers in Indiana and Florida. This is where Arden honed her amazing interviewing and writing skills! From there, she entered the publishing world at the family-owned Rodale Press. At Rodale, her “day job” was senior health writer for the book division, but she also moonlighted as a writer for their new magazine called Pets: Part of the Family. That is where Arden realized that she could tap her love of writing and interviewing to help people become healthier, and to tout the power of her other lifelong passion, pets. Pets and people — that's what Arden is all about. Fast forward to today, and Arden has done just that, in her trademark edu-taining style. Today, Arden happily shares her home in Dallas with her wife, Julie, and their furry Brady Bunch of three cats, three dogs and an overworked vacuum cleaner. There are some health issues that come from where you least expect it!In this episode, Kashif is joined by Ivy-league Nutritionist Sally K. Norton, MPH. Sally holds a nutrition degree from Cornell University and a master's degree in Public Health. Her path to becoming a leading expert on dietary oxalate includes a prior career working at major medical schools in medical education and public health research. Her personal healing experience inspired years of research that led to her book, Toxic Superfoods, which was released in January 2023 from Rodale Press and is available everywhere books are sold. The term superfoods is usually known to refer to food that keep us healthy but what if these superfoods actually do the exact opposite? That is where Sally and Kashif's discussion dive into as they delve into what these superfoods contain. Oxalate is the specific chemical that may be found in food. It is rarely discussed but it greatly impacts our health as soon as it diffuses into our body's cells. Some of the aspects that oxalates may affect include membrane damage, oxidative strains on cells, inflammation, metabolism, and the lining of the gut. When these go unnoticed they may lead to fibrosis, cyst problems, and other autoimmune problems. With this in mind, Kashif and Sally touched on the following points to contribute to the knowledge of why it is important to be keen on what we consume:Toxic Superfoods such as almonds, chocolates, pseudo-grains, and some vegetables. How molds produce oxalateOxalate solubility and its relation to health and oxalate poisoningSally's pantry and food intake adviceWays to get around oxalated foodWhen symptoms show and the actions that must be takenHow to be mindful of mistakes and evaluating your overall consumption throughout your whole lifeYou may learn more from Sally from the following channels: Visit SallyKNorton.comSubscribe to Sally on YouTubeFollow Sally at @sknorton and @toxicsuperfoods_oxalate_book (on Instagram), @BeFreeToThrive (on Facebook), and @BetterLowOx (on Twitter.) Curated News Getting Happier with Horticulture: The Healthy Benefits of Gardening | gradynewsource.uga.edu | Gianna Perani Important Events November 2, 1902 On this day, Nathaniel Britton, one of the founders of the New York Botanical Garden, wrote to the industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie asking for permission to name a genus of Giant Cactus native to Arizona and northern Mexico in his honor. Three days later, Mr. Carnegie's secretary responded: “Mr. Carnegie has yours of November 2nd and asks me to say he is greatly honored by the proposal and will do his best to live up to it.” And so, the majestic Saguaro ("suh-GWAR-oh") Cactus, the largest cactus in the United States and a plant synonymous with the American West, was christened the Carnegiea gigantea. Saguaros can live for over two centuries. The Saguaro root system has one large tap root accompanied by a very intricate and shallow root system that lies within the top three inches of the soil. Any precious drops of rain are guided down to the ground beneath its mighty arms. After thirty-five years of life, Saguaro's produce a white night-blooming flower that is bat-pollinated. Saguaros begin to develop their arms after reaching the age of fifty. The average Saguaro weighs three tons. The largest Saguaro ever recorded was called "Granddaddy." Granddaddy stood forty feet tall, had over 52 limbs, and was estimated to be three hundred years old. November 2, 1906 Birth of Daniil Andreyev ("Da-NEEL An-drave"), Russian writer, poet, and mystic. He wrote a book called The Rose of the World over eight-and-a-half years as a prisoner in a Stalin prison camp. Daniil once wrote, "Perhaps the worst will never come to pass, and tyranny on such a scale will never recur. Perhaps humanity will forevermore retain the memory of Russia's terrible historical experience. Every heart nurses that hope, and without it life would be unbearable." Daniil had uncanny powers of recall and memory. He was also a voracious reader and grew his personal library to over 2,000 books by the time he was arrested in 1947. Daniil suffered from a spinal defect and wore an iron corset while in prison to cope with the pain. Daniil began having mystic experiences as an adolescent. His first poem was called The Garden. In 1949, at the Vladimir high-security prison, Daniil started to have regular spiritual encounters and visions. And so he used those experiences to write Rose of the World at night. He had his final transcendent revelation in November of 1953 and then finished the book after his release from prison in 1957. And then, Daniil kept the book to himself - hiding it from the government in order to keep it from being destroyed. Daniil's Rose of the World remained hidden before finally getting published in 1991 under Gorbachev. The Rose of the World was an instant bestseller. Daniel H. Shubin wrote the latest English translation in 2018. Shubin writes that, “[Daniil] Envisioned the reign of rows of the world on Earth in the twenty-third century, the future Epoch being a golden age of humanity, whose essence will develop… into a close connection between God and people. It includes a society that consists of a worldwide ecclesiastical fraternity.” Daniil himself explained Rose of the World this way: Rose of the World can be compared to an inverted flower whose root is in heaven, while the petal bowl is here, among Humanity, on Earth. Its stem is the revelation through which the spiritual sap flows, sustaining and strengthening its petals... But other than the petals, it also has a pith; this is its individual teaching. November 2, 1954 On this day, The Journal Herald (Dayton, Ohio) ran a little snippet on the wonder of Potpourri from the November garden. The November garden has her odors. In most instances, they are not so beguiling as those of spring and summer, yet they are far from displeasing. There is the sharp, vinegary tang that rises from leaves, sodden and cold. There is the odor of soil on which frost has laid whiteness; an odor, which seems different from that of earth newly turned in spring. There is the pungence that rises from rotting apples and pears; and the heavy fragrance which issues from the chrysanthemum leaf and blossom. Occasionally a flower remains whose breath is that of July. Even though the hand of chill has pressed heavily on the garden, the sweet alyssum has summer perfume. And a rose, spared, has a scent which speaks nostalgically of June. But in the main, the odor of the November garden is distinctive, sharp, penetrating, and has something of that element of age, which cannot be associated with redolence but rather with a potpourri. Unearthed Words She felt strong and blissfully empty, gliding through the crisp November air, enjoying the intermittent warmth of the sun as it filtered down through the overhanging trees, which were mostly stripped of their foliage. It was that trashy, post-Halloween part of the fall, yellow and orange leaves littering the ground. ― Tom Perrotta, The Leftovers Grow That Garden Library The Art of the Islamic Garden by Emma Clark This book came out in 2011 - so an oldie, but goodie. (It's already ten years old.) And here's what Emma wrote at the beginning of this book: Even a glimmer of understanding of traditional Islamic art and architecture clearly reveals that its beauty is not simply surface decoration, but is a reflection of a deep knowledge and understanding of the natural order and of the divine unity that penetrates all of our lives. Studying Islamic art and architecture and completing a master's thesis on Islamic gardens and garden carpet at the Royal college of art opened my eyes to the meaning of art. Understanding something of the religion of Islam in general and Islamic art in particular, it became clear that all art to a greater or lesser degree should be a vehicle of hope. It should remind us what it means to be human of our place in the universe and our role as is said in Islam as God's vice-regent on earth. And then she writes, and bear in mind; this is 2011: In the increasingly difficult times in which we live, it is good to be reminded that gardens and nature, transcend nationality, race, religion, color, and ideology. The Islamic garden is not only for Muslims, it's beauty is apparent to everyone. In her book, Emma offers an introduction to the design, the symbolism, and the planting of the traditional Islamic garden. Emma also gives some practical tips if you're interested in creating an Islamic garden for yourself. Emma points out that we all have different starting points for our gardens. We have different garden sizes and situations (urban garden or a country garden), obviously different climates and soils, etc. And so, she spends a couple of chapters offering up ideas for plants and trees and shrubs that you might want to consider incorporating into an Islamic-inspired garden. Now there is a pattern to Islamic gardens. They're often constructed around a central pool or fountain with four streams flowing symbolically to the earth's four corners. My favorite part of this book is exploring the symbolism behind Islamic art and gardens. And by the way, there is a magnificent chapter in this book that is all about the prince of Wales carpet garden. It's just spectacular. Now this book is out of print, and I predict that copies of this book will only get harder to get as time goes on. So if you have any interest, you should make sure that this one gets on your list. You can get a copy of The Art of the Islamic Garden by Emma Clark and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $26. Today's Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart November 2, 1975 On this day, The New York Times Around the Garden segment recommended some new garden books. Some bright newcomers have been added to the trowel‐watering can library. Here they are. Masakuni Kawasumi spent three years in this country adapting his Japanese methods of bonsai growing to American species of trees. His “Bonsai With American Trees” ($10, Kodansha International) is the result, an excellent basic primer... Tapeworm plant, living stones bead vine, spiderweb, and polka dot are a few of the off‐beat plants described in “Fun With Growing Odd and Curious House Plants” Virginie and George Elbert ($8.95, Crown). The odd‐sized book, 6½ x 11 inches, gives brief biographies and how‐to‐grow tips for many unusual house plants, delightful changes from the tried‐and‐true. And while on the subject of fun, there is Jack Kramer's “How to Identify & Care for House Plants” ($8.95, Doubleday). The fun comes in matching line‐drawings and silhouettes to the author's organizational key. Though probably not meant to be a puzzle book, it is. ...a plant number 8‐1‐3 turns out to be none other than a cattleya orchid. Thalassa Cruso, television “lady of the trowel” has done it again. This time she is telling about “Making Vegetables Grow” ($8.95, Knopf), one of her best with chatty helpful tips on bringing the crop in abundantly. Light gardens are booming, especially among those who have dark apartments and want some greenery indoors. “The Complete Book of Houseplants Under Lights” by Charles Marden Fitch ($9.95, Hawthorn) updates the hobby and is full of ideas. Joining the series of “state” books on wildflowers by John E. Klimas Jr., is “A Pocket Guide to the Common Wild Flowers of New York” ($5.95, Walker). Compact tuck in a backpack, Descriptions are in everyday language, not botanist's twang. Environmental awareness has come full circle with “Organic Flower Gardening” by Catherine Osgood Foster ($12.95, Rodale Press). An organic gardener's book on raising flowers? Mrs. Foster explains why, “One is for the sake of the bees, wasps and other beneficial insects and butterflies … another good reason is to protect the birds … the most important is that you avoid starting chain reactions in the environment from poisonous chemical sprays and dusts you might introduce.” And for winter reading by the fireplace, here are a few: “A Gardener Touched With Genius, The Life of Luther Burbank” by Peter Dreyer ($10, Coward, McCann & Geoghegan): “The Best of American Gardening” by Ken and Pat Kraft ($10, Walker), a clip hook of garden tips gleaned from 100‐year‐old seed catalogues; “The Plant Hunters” by B. J. Healey ($8.95, Scribners), a brief biography of discoverers of exotic species from the 17th century to the present. And for reference; “Ornamental Grasses” by Mary Hockenberry Meyer ($9.95, Scribners), an excellent well-illustrated guide to this unusual group of plants. “The Personal Garden, Its Architecture and Design” by Bernard Wolgensinger and Jose Daidone ($30, Van Nostrand Reinhold), beautifully illustrated with design concepts from European, Western and Japanese gardens. “Plant A Tree” by Michael A. Weiner ($15.95, Macmillan) subtitled, “A working guide to regreening America.” Good reference book for city planners, libraries, and schools on tree planting and care, nationwide. Florida, Texas, and California where the avocado is grown commercially, the trees do not start flowering until six years old, or sooner if grafted. One rare exception was reported by Barbara Stimson, a gardener in Maine, who wrote in a recent Letters to the Editor, Flower and Garden, that her indoor avocado did flower, but no fruit, when it was about two years old and four feet high. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

Some 30 years ago I had the opportunity to attend a medical conference and heard a presentation by Dr. Alan Gaby. Truthfully, this event marked a turning point in my career destiny for reasons that we will touch upon in this interview. But suffice it to say that I have a great deal of gratitude in my heart for the dedication to the art of medicine that so characterizes Dr. Gaby’s efforts over so many productive years. Dr. Alan Gaby received his undergraduate degree from Yale University, his M.S. in biochemistry from Emory University, and his M.D. from the University of Maryland. He was in private practice for 19 years, specializing in nutritional medicine. During that time he developed a wide spectrum of innovations that remain in widespread use today. He is past-president of the American Holistic Medical Association and has given expert testimony to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine on the cost-effectiveness of nutritional supplements. He is the author of Preventing and Reversing Osteoporosis (Prima, 1994) and The Doctor’s Guide to Vitamin B6 (Rodale Press, 1984), and the co-author of The Patient’s Book of Natural Healing (Prima, 1999). Dr. Gaby has written numerous scientific papers in the field of nutritional medicine. He has been the contributing medical editor for theTownsend Letter for Doctors since 1985, and served as contributing editor for Alternative Medicine Review from 1996 to 2010. Over the past 36 years, Dr. Gaby has developed a computerized database of more than 28,000 individually chosen medical journal articles related to the field of natural medicine. He was professor of nutrition and a member of the clinical faculty at Bastyr University in Kenmore, WA from 1995 to 2002. He has appeared on the CBS Evening News. In 2010, Dr. Gaby completed a 30-year project: the textbook Nutritional Medicine. Dr. Gaby has culled more than 40,000 research studies and evidence from his clinical practice to create Nutritional Medicine, which discusses more than 400 different health conditions and disorders. It also contains 60 chapters on individual therapeutic agents (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other natural substances) including biochemical effects, clinical indications, signs and symptoms of deficiency, adverse effects, drug interactions, nutrient interactions, and dosage and administration. Chapters on fundamentals of nutritional medicine (including dietary fundamentals, food additives, reactive hypoglycemia, food allergy, “sublaboratory” hypothyroidism, and candidiasis) are also included. Nutritional Medicine is a foundational cornerstone and should be on the desk of every healthcare practitioner, in my opinion. Importantly, we now have the second edition of Nutritional Medicine, which includes all of the information from the first edition with additions and modifications based on new research. I encourage all of you to visit Dr. Gaby’s website where you’ll find sample chapters from this newly revised text.

Today he is here to talk to us about his new book: A Man, A Pan, A Plan: 100 Delicious & Nutritious One-Pan Recipes You Can Make Right Now! (http://amzn.to/2CgSQhP) ! I thought this would make a great Bonus Valentine’s Episode since it’s all about cooking (men cooking for their girl but could be girls cooking for their guy – overall just the share a healthy homemade meal idea) Can I ask about your audience and how you got started etc? I have a lot of listeners who want to be market farmers and they are always interested in how to get their customers to cook the food in their CSAs and also the people who grow their own food or get food at the market want to know how to cook more vegetables from their garden. The eternal CSA question what do I do with this produce I only partly recognize. We’ve been married for 25 years and my husband built this mini farm last year. but we just dug a well a few years ago 560′ deep and we’re working on making the change from gardener to market farmer. It’s a huge learning challenge somewhat like going from PC to Mac or vice Versa I’m so excited because I always wanted to work at Rodales. worked at Rodale (https://www.rodale.com/) for 10 years. It’s part of a small community in Emmaus, PA. The farm where Bob Rodale organic movement even started before the word organic! Are you a millennial I talk about millennials a lot if you’ve been there for 10 years maybe your not. IDK, I’m 32. I think millennial’s are born between 1980-1995, my step-daughters are born in 1980 and 1984 and they’re are. I think it’s still weird because a generation should be 18 years shouldn’t so IDK but I think you qualify. There’s a little more pre-chat here but then it jumps to our intro! More than thirty years work at Ideas produced a lot of radio programmes, and so I'm always happy to have suggestions from friends and correspondents as to what I should revive next. One such suggestion came this summer during a dinner with my old friend John McKnight. He asked if I had ever interviewed his old friend Bob Rodale (1930-1990), and I remembered that I had— for the present series, back in 1986. John said that he would like to hear it, so here, after some delay, it is.These four programmes were an attempt to survey new thinking in environmental and economic philosophy and to investigate some of the efforts that were then being made to build nature and community back into the field of economics. John McKnight's friend Bob Rodale, who was the director of the Rodale Press in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, was then involved in one of the many one of many initiatives explored in the series. He called it the Regeneration Project: an attempt to model community economics after Nature's modes of healing and recovery following a disturbance. Since this series was a survey, the ideas are, naturally, not all of the same tenor. In the second programme, for example, several quite discordant ecological philosophies are presented. But what impresses me thirty years later is the generally hopeful tone, and the confidence, even among antagonists, that a new age was dawning. This aspect of the 1980's is easily forgotten today in the wake of the seeming triumph of the turbo-capitalism that was then gestating alongside the alternatives presented here. History is written by its (apparent) winners, as has often been said —I've seen this saying attributed to both Winston Churchill and Walter Benjamin —and yet many of the initiatives on which I then reported carry on, and many of the ideas and proposals that are discussed remain as compelling and as pertinent as they were in 1986. The series had a large cast of characters whom I have listed below, along with their affiliations at the time the series was broadcast:Part One: Peter Berg, Planet Drum Foundation; John Todd, Ocean Arks International; George McRobie, Intermediate Technology Development Group; Stuart Hill, Ecological Agriculture Project, McGill University; John Quinney, New Alchemy Institute; David Simpson and Jane Lapiner, ecological restoration, Mattole Valley, California.Part Two: Paul Shepard, Pitzer College, author of Madness and Society; Alan Drengson, University of Victoria, editor of The Trumpeter, a journal of ecological philosophy; Neil Evernden, York University, author of The Natural Alien; John Livingstone, York University, author of The Fallacy of Wildlife Conservation; Murray Bookchin, initiator of "social ecology"Part Three: Hazel Henderson, critic of modern economics, author of Creating Alternative Futures; David Ross, social economist, co-author of From the Roots Up: Economic Development As If Community Mattered; Michael Linton, founder of Local Exchange Trading System (LETS) in Courtenay, B.C.; Sarah Calisto, Courtenay resident, participant in LETS; Peter Usher, social economist, co-author of From the Roots Up: Economic Development As If Community Mattered; Joy Leach, Van City Credit Union; Michael Philips, founder of the Briar PatchPart Four: Slimma Williams, Lower East Side poet; Dan Chodorkoff, Institute for Social Ecology; Bob Rodale, Rodale Press, the Regeneration Project; Peter Fuller, Automotive Recycling Company, Allentown, PA; Guy Dauncey, community economics; Don MacMillan, Nanaimo Community Employment Advisory Society; Narasim Katary, director of long-range planning, Sudbury, Ont.; Greg MacLeod, New Dawn, Cape Breton Island, N.S.

She is also the creator of the ChangeDinner campaign and HealthClass2.0, which are helping individuals change the food system at dinner tables and in schools. Ellen Gustafason is this week’s guest on Eat Your Words. She chats with guest host Briana Kurtz about the book, her various projects and what’s wrong with the way the world is eating. This program was sponsored by Cain Vineyard & Winery. “The American food system has literally spread to every corner of the planet.” [03:00] “[Food waste] is built into our system from farm to refrigerator. It’s something a lot of eaters don’t realize. We have to really re-think what kind of food chain we want if this kind of waste is built in. This is where some of the altenerative buying systems have been successful – people would rather buy direct from a farmer and know there’s no waste involved.” [24:00] “The food system is one of the least free market capitalist systems we have.” [24:00] “I love how democratized cooking has become because of the internet.” [25:00] –Ellen Gustafason

Shelley Schlender visited with Colorado State University Scientist and Paleolithic Lifestyle expert Loren Cordain to talk about acne prevention. Cordain asserts that the best “prescription” for preventing acne is to eat the foods that have always helped traditional cultures be acne-free. That means lots and lots of vegetables, along with some fruit. Meanwhile, kick out modern foods--especially high glycemic foods . . . that means avoid sugary and starchy modern stuff -- you know, sodas, candy, bread and pasta. Cordain also says to eliminate dairy. (Cordain interview starts at 16:05). Producer: Tom McKinnon Co-Hosts: Breanna Draxler and Tom McKinnon Engineer: Ted Burnham Executive Producer: Tom McKinnon

The Bunion Derby was an event like no other, and there will never be another like it. While there have been many cross continental races since 1928, none were organized in the way that C.C. Pyle had organized the event: it was an endurance race, a circus and a harsh and unforgiving competition. In his book “C. C. Pyles Amazing Foot Race: the true story of the 1928 coast to coast run across America, by Geoff Williams, published by Rodale Press…the author writes “As difficult as his amazing foot race was, for all the car collisions and nervous breakdowns involved, calling it the Bunion Derby was never quite accurate. As winter turned to spring in 1928, the runners suffered blisters, brusies, boils, shin splints, charley horses, sore toes, broken and fallen arches, corns and calluses: but not one of them developed a bunion.” Show Links:Fdip Blog of the Week: The song “Human Race” was by Darius Lux
