Welcome to the DEC podcast. I want to warn you that the subject matter in this podcast is for Mature Audiences and there may be some parts that are disturbing and Viewer Discretion is advised. I'm going to be sharing a story with you today that is incredibly compelling. It's about a 17-year-old girl and an Oxnard Police Officer – and I'm blessed to know both of them. In this episode, you're going to have the privilege of listening to the conversation I had while speaking with one of them. On May 3rd, 2019, while in a dirt field behind a business in an commercial district, Oxnard CA Police Officer Timothy Roberts shot a 17-year-old girl three times. He did that because, even though he was attempting De-Escalation, she had her mind made up that she wanted to die. Not long after he arrived on scene, she charged at him with a knife forcing him to use deadly force.Roberts, then a 4-year veteran of the Oxnard Police Department, was the first officer on scene and found the teen standing in the parking lot. After the girl brandished a six-inch kitchen knife, Roberts commanded her to drop it while he backed away. A second officer arrived and was in the process of retrieving a less-lethal "beanbag" shotgun from his vehicle when the teen charged at Roberts. Officer Roberts fired three rounds, striking the girl all 3 times. The girl fell to the ground and the two officers immediately began providing first aid until paramedics arrived. The incident was captured in full by Officer Roberts' body-worn camera. In the body-camera footage, the teen can be heard apologizing after she was shot, a guilt that would continue to grow during her stay at the hospital.Doctors initially weren't sure she would survive due to bleeding in her liver. They later warned she would not be able to walk again from a second bullet wound in her leg.The teen recalled the guilt that haunted her in the hospital, even affecting her dreams. She decided to make amends when she was discharged in June that year. The teen and the officer met in person for the first time on Jan. 23, 2020, and have remained in contact ever since. This young lady said she wants to share the lessons she learned to promote mental health awareness. She said, "In many of these situations, the person in my situation does not live. I feel like it's my duty, as someone who lived, to promote mental health awareness."She went on to say, "Always be willing to reach out to someone who might be struggling. Sure, you may be frustrated with them for feeling that way, but if you give them even the least bit of understanding and support, it's a gamechanger."If you're feeling despondent, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, for both English and Spanish speakers, can be reached at 988 or suicide prevention lifeline.orgKeep listening, there's a lot to unpack in today's show!IDEA - the International De-Escalation Association, is dedicated to Saving Lives, Reputations, & Relationships through Conflict De-Escalation & Communication Training for Teachers, Parents, and Public Safety Providers.Find more about How to Calm an Angry Person in 90 Seconds or Less Come visit us at the IDEA website (International De-Escalation Association): https://TheIdea.WorldSubscribe to our free weekly newsletter to stay up to date on the latest news and blogs about Schools, Police, Fire, Medical Services and Flight Attendants.Do you or your organization need Communication Skills and De-Escalation Training? Arcenio J. López is a Mixteco native from a village in Oaxaca, Mexico. When he arrived in Oxnard, California in 2003, Arcenio worked as a farmworker in the strawberry fields. Three years later, Arcenio was hired as a community organizer with the Mixteco Indigena Community Organizing Project or MICOP, whose mission is to support, organize and empower the indigenous migrant communities in California's Central Coast. Episode 102 of Strength for Today’s Pastor features Pastor Lance Ralston of Calvary Chapel Oxnard, CA. Our conversation today concerns the ideas contained in a new book by author Rod Dreher … a book that contains a message that could have major impacts upon the ministries of pastors, leaders, and churches. A bit about Lance: he has been married to Lynn Ralston for forty years. They have three children and four grandkids. They began Calvary Chapel Oxnard thirty-eight years ago. The church’s ministry includes a private Christian high school and a 24-hour low-power FM radio station. Lance is the author of the book, Marriage: As It Was Meant To Be. He also authors a popular podcast called “Communio Sanctorum: History of the Christian Church.” (www.sanctorum.us). Are you ready for a radical stance in response to today's darkness and accompanying evils? Then tune in to hear a well-reasoned, Biblical response which will challenge and strengthen pastors everywhere.

Anderson Paak has one of the craziest stories I’ve ever heard. His entire life could be 3 separate biopics and I would be on the edge of my seat for each one. So buckle up, grab your popcorn, grab some Kleenex, and get ready for a roller coaster ride before they were famous. This is crazy. Anderson.Paak was born Brandon Paak Anderson on February 8, 1986, in Oxnard California. The dot in the middle of his stage name symbolizes his “attention to detail” and serves as a reminder for him to always keep his craft sharp and for everyone else to pay attention to everything he does.

At-Risk Youth Issue Continues Youth involvement in gangs is a serious problem across the country, whether you’re in a big city or the land of suburbia. Many of us see gang graffiti yet glance over it as we have become numb to the blight and crime. The National Gang Center reports that over the past decade, annual estimates of the number of gang members have averaged around 770,000 nationally. Shift Gang Graffiti to Automotive Repair and Car Customization Police departments are stretched thin for resources, yet officers all across our country create or volunteer to help their community. Dragg Racing Against Gangs & Graffiti (DRAGG) http://bit.ly/DRAGGTeam is an innovative afterschool program in the City of Oxnard California where police officers and people from the automotive industry mentor local high school students. A new spin on an old idea; keep the youth focused on the future with positive influences and they will stay out of trouble. This positive learning opportunity teaches youth responsibility and respect for others in the unique environment of the automotive industry, while gaining hands on exposure to knowledge of automotive careers. These programs are also active in Phoenix, AZ, and this month launched in Los Angeles! We are excited to talk with DRAGG Executive Director Sargeant Woodruff, with the Oxnard Police Department, and DRAGG Phoenix Director Officer Teerink, with the Phoenix Police Department, to talk about the successes and impact the DRAGG program is having on young people. Follow them on Instagram or Twitter.

In Curious Unions: Mexican American Workers and Resistance in Oxnard, California, 1898-1961 (University of Nebraska Press, 2012) Dr. Frank P. Barajas details the central role of Mexican labor in the development of the agriculturally rich coastal plane located between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. In this thoroughly researched history, Barajas relates the curious unions (i.e., unlikely partnerships) formed between agricultural industrialists and small independent growers on the one hand, and a multi-ethnic milieu of Mexican, Japanese, and Filipino laborers on the other. The alliance of small growers with agribusiness dictated a pattern of commercial, residential, and municipal development that simultaneously integrated Mexican laborers into the lowest tier of the local economy, while also segregating them and other people of color residentially and socially. This schizophrenic pattern of economic and spatial development resulted in unintended cross-cultural interactions among people of color that provided the locus of ethnic community formation and worker resistance. Providing insight into the shifting economic and demographic conditions across the Oxnard Plain, Barajas details the long history of Mexican labor resistance in the Sugar Beet Strikes of 1903 and 1933, the Citrus Strike of 1941, and the local campaign against the Bracero Program in the late 1950s. Each mobilization against Mexican worker exploitation required the formation of alliances that at times bridged class and ethno-racial divisions. Understanding the significance of these curious unions, Barajas argues, reinterprets the history of Southern California and the place of ethnic Mexicans within it. David-James Gonzales (DJ) is a Doctoral Candidate in History at the University of Southern California. He is a historian of the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, Civil Rights, and Latino Identity & Politics. DJ is currently writing a dissertation on the influence of Mexican American civic engagement and political activism on the metropolitan development of Orange County, CA from 1930 to 1965.
