We know we're supposed to worship God, but sometimes it's a challenge. Today we look at Psalm 150 and talk about several key principles to worshiping our Lord in spirit and truth. Join us! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. The podcast began by citing John 4:23 & 24 where Jesus said, “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” What does it mean to worship God in our spirit according to Hid truth? Since this is what God seeks, would you say that a worshipful attitude characterizes you and your life? 2. The podcast mentioned that the word “praise” has a wide range of meaning that can be boiled down to admiration and speaking well of someone. This word “praise” occurs in every verse for a total of 13 times in 6 verses. What does this tell you about the importance of you personally speaking well of God to Him? How is this principle reflected in your private worship? How about your worship with your church community? 3. Keeping with the idea of “praise” meaning to speak well of the Lord, how is that principle demonstrated in verse 2? What are we to speak well about with God in this verse? How about taking a moment to reflect on “mighty deeds” that God has done (either in your life, the Bible, etc)? How is God “excellently great”? 4. The podcast mentioned that it's important that we praise God in truth about things that are true about Him. Why is truth so important? How would a person's praise be limited by not knowing truth about God or for praising Him for things that are not true about Him? 5. Verses 3 – 5 talk about praising God with various instruments. Do you know how to play any of these (or their modern equivalents)? Are you using that skill to worship God? How does putting praise to music deepen our connection with what we're celebrating about God? 6. Have you ever arrived at church, or some other setting where God's people were worshiping Him, and you didn't arrive with a heart of praise? Does verse 6 give wiggle room for that kind of thinking? How might a person, who's having an off day, bring their spirit around to worshipping God? 7. Finally, the last couple of key chapter episodes have focused on worship. Why is this instruction necessary? Is praise and worship automatic? Why or why not? 8. In light of the priority of worship in God's Word, how might you increase the priority of praise and worship in your own life? Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! There are so many things we can praise God for, we sometimes get stuck just choosing something to celebrate about Him. Today, we're turning to Psalm 147 and mining out a whole set of gems that are worthy of celebrating about our God. Join us! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. The podcast opened with a question about the places where our mind goes when we're not paying attention to what we're thinking. When your mind is on cruise control, what do you tend to think about? How can you develop the habit of increasingly filling your thoughts with praise? 2. Psalm 147 has three paragraphs. Each paragraph opens with a similar theme. Looking over verses 1, 7 and 12. What is that theme? What response it this psalm expecting from us? 3. Verse 1 tells us that it is pleasant to praise the Lord. When is God's praise pleasant to you? When is it not? When it's not pleasant to praise God what does that likely reveal about your mindset at that time? 4. The podcast pointed out that Isaiah 57:10 tells us that the Lord creates the praises of our lips. When you think about the Christian walk, how can a person better position themselves to benefit from God's work in this way? 5. How might verse 2 shed some light on when this psalm was written? If it was written during difficult times, how does this make the overall theme of “praising the Lord” become that much more surprising? Why? 6. When you read verse 3, what does this tell you about God's love, compassion and care for you? How might you put yourself in a position to receive His ministry to you? 7. Verse 4 tells us that God numbers the stars and gives names to al of them. Since there are over a septillion starts (yes, that's a real number), what does this tell us about the breadth of God's mind? What does verse 5 tell us about His understanding? 8. Why should thanksgiving accompany your praises? In terms of percentages, what percentage of your prayer life is devoted to thanksgiving? How can you make thanksgiving a greater part of your prayer life? 9. What are some practical things to praise God for in verses 8 & 9? Does your worship ever consist of thanking God for these kinds of things? 10. Verses 10 & 11 gives us an important principle regarding the perspective of God. In these verses, what is He NOT impressed by? What does He favor? Why? 11. Think about the points being made in verses 13 - 18. What are modern equivalents of these things? How can you convert God's provision of these things, to your worship and praise of Him? 12. As we finish our study of Psalm 147, how about reading back through this passage and pull out one gem to praise God for throughout your day. Which one have you chosen? As you anticipate how your day will unfold, how might you praise God for this item, throughout your day? Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Available on Amazon! Relationships are not easy, and yet when we have harmonious relationships, it's something to celebrate. Join us for a light-hearted study in Psalm 133 as we look at the importance of unity and how to find it and how to maintain it. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. Today's study is about unity. How would you define unity? What is it based on? What sustains unity? What breaks it? 2. How does verse 1 characterize unity? Since we know that David wrote this psalm, where were some places where we know he did not experience this kind of unity? 3. Although verse 2 might seem a bit gross to us, precious oil was an important part of their ancient culture. How was oil used? What did it signify? How would its aroma be something people would want to have on them? 4. Why does David compare it to the dew of Mount Hermon? Why would dew have been a blessing in that part of the world? How would its cool waters refresh the people? How is this a picture of unity? 5. The podcast took some time to read over John 17. Why do you think the Lord prayed for the unity of His people in verses 21 to 23? According to John 17:15, who seeks to divide God's people? What are some of his tactics? How can God's people be on guard against him? 6. Is there any place of disunity in your life? If so, how are you contributing to the problem? Are there any changes you can make to pursue unity with those around you? Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Available on Amazon! Our homes are a gift from the Lord, but they're also a responsibility. Today we study a joyful psalm and learn how God has entrusted us with an array of things that we must center on Him. Join us for joyful study in a joyful psalm! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. What does verse 1 mean when it talks about the Lord building the house? Have you ever seen people try to build their homes without the Lord? What does that look like? What were the long-term spiritual implications of that? 2. In verse 1, who guards the city? Does this verse say that watchmen are not necessary? If not, what is it saying? 3. How often do you rise up early to accomplish more work? In verse 2, what is the “bread of painful labors?” Why is this vain? Have you ever tried to take on more than the Lord has given for you to do? What was the result? 4. Verse 2 talks about the Lord's provision for His people, even when they're sleeping. Does this mean that His people don't need to work? What does it mean? 5. How does Psalm 127 establish the principle that if we're too busy to have a life centered on the Lord, then we're busier than He wants us to be? 6. In verse 3, why are children a blessing from the Lord? How is this different from the world's view of children? If you have children, do you view them as a direct blessing from God? 7. What is the meaning behind verse 4? Why does the author compare children to arrows in the hand of a warrior? 8. Why is a full house a blessing? Is this how the world characterizes full homes? 9. As the podcast was finishing up, it asked several questions: a. Is God part of your home and to what degree? b. Are you looking to Him to watch over you and protect you? c. Are you looking to Him to teach you about parenting? d. Is what you're trying to produce in your home centered on Him? e. Are there any changes that you need to make in light of your answers to these questions? Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Available on Amazon! All of us are on a spiritual journey, whether we even realize it. While the journey can be difficult, those who are journeying towards the Lord have his grace and protection. Join us as we study Psalm 121 and read about the help the Lord gives to His pilgrims. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. The podcast explained that this next stretch of psalms were likely read by people as they made their pilgrimages to Jerusalem. How does this historical data point help you understand what this psalm is communicating? 2. If Psalm 121 was read while a person was journeying to Jerusalem, and if that person was to look around at the various hills and valleys, what kinds of things would they have possibly been watchful of? How would it have been important to remember where their help comes from, in verse 1? 3. In verse 2, who gives them help? According to this verse, where has His power already been put on display? 4. As they were journeying to Jerusalem, in what ways could their feet slip? How might verse 3 relate to those kinds of challenges? Is the psalmist ultimately talking about walking, or something more important? 5. If the pilgrims would have to camp along the way to Jerusalem, how would verse 4 provide comfort? 6. As they journeyed in the daylight, how might verses 5 & 6 remind them of the Lord's watchful care? 7. What hope does verse 7 provide? Is there any situation you're facing where this verse is a helpful reminder? 8. If this psalm was read by a family making their pilgrimage to Jerusalem, what do you think verse 8 is referring to? 9. As you reflect on this psalm, what place is there for “fear” and “worry” in the heart of God's people? What principles from this psalm speak to this question? 10. Even though this psalm was read by pilgrims going to Jerusalem, it still relates to us today. Where are you on your journey to the Lord? What principles from this passage speak to situations you're facing? Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Available on Amazon! In order for us to gain understanding and insights into God's Word, He must illumine us. Today we'll dive into Psalm 119:113-144 to see how the Holy Spirit uses His Word to illumine us to increasingly understand Him and His Word and how we might live. Join us! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. Verse 113 probably surprises us with how it begins with saying that the psalmist hates those who are double-minded. What did the podcast say about the word “hate” and what does it mean in this passage? 2. Look over verses 113 to 120. What does this passage show us about the challenges the author was having with people around him? Have you had similar challenges with people in your life? Why do you think that is? 3. In these verses (verses 113-13), in what way does the psalmist seek to minimize the influence of evildoers in his life? How can we follow similar principles in our lives today? 4. What is the psalmist's view of the Lord in verse 120? How is this view necessary to live out the principles you have already seen in this psalm? 5. As we move on to verses 121, look over these verses and make note of the psalmist's requests. What does he ask for? What does this teach us about the Lord's role in our pursuit of Him? What was the author's role in all of this? 6. What does the author ask for in verse 125? How is this similar to what he asks for in verses 124, 130 and 144? Why is “understanding” so critical to spiritual wisdom and insight? How do we gain this understanding? 7. Taking what we've been talking about so far, what does the psalmist ask for in verse 133? How would the Lord answer this prayer? What does this require of the psalmist, so that he will actually receive this? 8. Look over verses 137-144. How does the author describe the Lord's character? Why is it so important that we trust in God's righteousness? Why does that matter for our daily lives? 9. How does the author view himself in verse 141? How do others view him? Have you ever felt this way? How does the psalmist demonstrate, in this psalm, that he has overcome this view? Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Available on Amazon! Trials come the way of all people, and sometimes God has clear reasons why He has allowed them into our lives. Join us today as we continue our study in Psalm 119 and learn how God used trials in his life to draw him to greater spiritual maturity. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. The focus of this passage is on walking through trials. Are you going through any trials right now? If so, what? 2. The podcast mentioned that Psalm 119 is the longest prayer in the Bible. What do you notice about this prayer? How is it different than how you pray? 3. In verse 57, what does it mean for the psalmist to say that the Lord is his “portion”? While you might not use this precise language, is this how you walk with the Lord? 4. Verse 57 ends with a promise that the psalmist is going to keep God's Words. How does he keep this promise in verses 58, 59 and 60? 5. Verse 65 continues the downward tone of this psalm (it won't turn back up until verse 89). In what ways does this section show us that the psalmist, himself, has endured much pain and difficulty? How does the psalmist respond to these difficulties? Where have you had similar difficulties in life? In what ways can you follow the psalmist's example? 6. What does the psalmist seek in verse 66? Why does he need this to walk through trials in a spiritually healthy way? 7. In verse 67, what was the psalmist's spiritual condition, before his affliction? What was his condition afterwards? What is the psalmist's own estimations of his afflictions in verse 71? Why do you think this transformation happened? How do trials have a way of transforming us? 8. What kind of example does the psalmist want to be in verse 74? How about verse 79? In your own life, what spiritual principles are you modeling for others to follow? 9. In verse 81, what is the psalmist waiting for? How is this particularly poignant, in light of the podcast's explanation of the phrase, in verse 83, of being like “a wineskin in the smoke”? 10. What kinds of struggles does the author have with people in verses 84, 85, 86 and 87? How might a godly person still have these kinds of struggles with other people? 11. How does verse 89 reflect a shift in tone? Where is the psalmist focused now? What impact would this focus have on his joy? 12. In verse 92, what role did God's Word have in preserving the author? Why would it have this kind of role? Does it have this role in your life? 13. Look over verses 92-95, what does the psalmist say about how he interacts with God's Word? What would similar interactions look like in your own life? 14. In verses 99-100, what are the benefits of his study of God's Word? Have you ever seen these kinds of spiritual realities your own life, or in the people around you? 15. Verse 105 is a famous verse for teaching how to walk according to God's Word. What did the podcast say about how “lamps” worked back then? How was this a helpful picture of what it means to walk according to God's Word? Psalm 119 sets the Word of God right onto our heart and life. Join us in this first of four studies into this important passage that teaches us to love and delight in the Word of God! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. According to the podcast, what is the overarching theme of Psalm 119? What does this theme call us to? 2. According to the podcast, how is Psalm 119 arranged? What is each section arranged according to? In the original Hebrew text, what does every verse start with? How is this helpful for us to understand this psalm? 3. What are the two principles in verse 1? How does this set the tone for the rest of this psalm? 4. Verse 1 mentions blessings for those who walk according to God's Word. What kinds of blessings have you experienced by walking according to God's Word? Look over verses 5 to 20. How are these blessings listed in these verses? 5. According to verse 4, what is the origin of God's Word? What does it tell us about why the Lord has given us these instructions? What is the expectation for what we do with them? How did the Podcast explain that Christians can still keep the principle of these words, even if we're no longer under this covenant? 6. The podcast mentioned that another key principle in this psalm is the necessity of the Lord's grace to enable us to live out these principles. How do verses 4 to 40 teach this principle? 7. The podcast mentioned that this section also has much to say about “meditation”. What is biblical meditation? How does the author model meditation in this psalm? 8. Clearly the author is devoted to God's Word. Why do you think he is so devoted? In what ways is your devotion similar? Is it different in any area? How might you seek the Lord for a change in attitude towards His Word? Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Available on Amazon! Elle a étudié la scénographie, la conception de costumes et l'éclairage au Collège Lionel-Groulx, et c'est une simple annonce dans un journal avec un numéro 1-800 qui l'a mise sur cette voie incroyable. My guest today has a fascinating Club Med journey that spans decades. She first joined the company in 1992 as a Costume Designer and worked until 1994. Then, twenty-three years later, she returned to Club Med—this time as an Excursions G.O. at Columbus Isle in 2017. Her very first season was at Club Med St. Lucia, where she had the unforgettable experience of dressing none other than Queen's legendary guitarist, Sir Brian May—for the G.M. show—without even realizing who he was at the time! She studied set design, costume design, and lighting in college, and it was a simple newspaper ad with a 1-800 number that set her on this incredible path. Hailing from Joliette, Quebec, please give a warm welcome to Izzy Chartier! In this episode, we dive into all the details of Izzy's Club Med journey—from her memorable seasons and brushes with celebrities to what it was like transitioning from Animation to Excursions after a twenty-three-year break. Worship does not come easily or naturally. For many of us, we have to be very intentional about worship. Amazingly, even David had times when he needed to remind himself of why to worship the Lord. Today we'll study Psalm 103 and look at these crucial reasons we can always worship our glorious Lord. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. The podcast explained that Psalm 103 is a “Call to worship” the Lord. What does this mean and why do we need to be summoned to worship Him? 2. What does the phrase “Bless the Lord” mean in verse 1? What is David calling in himself to worship the Lord? What kinds of blessings have we received in verse 5? 3. In verse 2, why does true worship require us to remember how God has benefited us? How has God benefited you? In what way should this lead you to worship Him more? 4. What does verse 3, why does receiving “pardon” from God cause us to worship Him? In what way is pardoning part of our healing? Ultimately, when and where we will be healed? 5. In verses 6 & 7, how can we worship God for His deliverance of the Jews? Why? How does He show us a similar work of deliverance? 6. How is God gracious to us in verse 8? How is His graciousness evident in verse 9? 7. How does verse 10 show us God's mercy and grace? What does this show us about God's attitude towards us? 8. How do verses 12 & 13 show us God's love? How do the terms east and west show us God's infinite grace and forgiveness? 9. In verses 17 & 18, who is this forgiveness for? Why? How do we enter this relationship with the Lord? 10. In verses 19 - 22, who are we joining with when we worship the Lord? How might this reality affect your private and public worship? How does this help us know that our future will always be oriented to the Lord in worship? 11. As you finish up your study in this psalm, why not look back over it and pull out the specific ways you can worship Him right now. Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! On this episode of the Stories podcast, we tell the dramatic tale of Gus McCoig, a Jefferson County boy who became one of East Tennessee's most notorious Depression-era outlaws. McCoig's story starts with his chance encounter with outlaw Clarence Bunch in a jail cell, followed by their escape and his later capture and conviction for crimes he committed while in the Bunch gang. After he escaped the Tennessee State Prison, he went on a crime spree across East Tennessee that ended with his capture and execution at just 25 years old. It's another one of the Stories of Appalachia. If you've not done so already, subscribe to the Stories podcast at Spreaker, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, PlayerFM or on your favorite podcast app. Thanks for listening.
We know we're supposed to worship, but sometimes we struggle. Well, today we work through Psalm 100 (and even some earlier psalms) to see how we can join in the worship of our wonderful Lord! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS:1. Look at your Bible just below where it says, “Psalm 100”. What do the non-italic words say? What does this tell us about the practical role this psalm might have in our walk with the Lord? 2. What did the podcast say about the context of this psalm, specifically Psalms 93 to 100? 3. Why is worship a critical spiritual discipline in the Christian life? What kinds of things ought we worship God for? How “good” are you at worship? 4. Where do we see people worshipping the Lord in the Bible? What are some of the reasons they worship Him? What example of worship are you setting for those around you? 5. In John 4:23, what did Jesus say the Father seeks? Are you fulfilling what He is seeking? Why or why not? 6. In verse 1, what are some things that we can joyfully and triumphantly celebrate about the Lord? 7. In verse 2, what is the connection between worship of the Lord and service to Him? How are we to serve the Lord, specifically, in verse 2? 8. In verse 3, why is knowledge and truth about God so vital to true worship? What are some truths about the Lord given in verse 3? 9. The podcast mentioned Ps 95:6. According to that verse, what is the posture of the worshipper? What value might these postures have in our worship? Do you ever worship the Lord this way? Why or why not? 10. Back in Psalm 100:3, the psalmist compares us to sheep. What similarities are there between us and sheep? Why is it helpful to recognize these similarities? 11. In verse 4, what public places should we be thanking and praising the Lord? Have you ever publicly thanked God? If so, what for? If not, why not? 12. The final verse of Psalm 100 reminds us of God's goodness and lovingkindness. Why can all people thank God for these blessings? 13. The podcast mentioned that true worship involves submission to the Lord. Why is submission necessary for true worship? In what ways is your submission to the Lord manifested in worship? 14. The podcast also mentioned that true worship involves knowing God rightly. Why is a correct understanding of the Lord vital to true worship? Can we worship Him rightly if we're wrong in what we're praising Him for? 15. As you reflect on this psalm, how about taking some time to privately worship and thank the Lord? Likewise, how about asking the Lord to give you an opportunity today to give Him public worship and thanks? Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Available on Amazon! Psalm 91 is a favorite passage for soldiers because it reminds them of God's watchful care of His people; yet its promises are for anyone who seeks to follow the Lord. Join us as we study this favorite psalm and reflect of God's protective care! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. The podcast mentioned that Psalm 91 is another example of “Gnomic Literature”. What is “Gnomic Literature,” and how does this genre help us apply the promises of this psalm? 2. This psalm is filled with many promises, but they are not for everyone; only for those who pursue the conditions of this psalm. Verses 1 & 2 give the first of four conditions in this psalm. What is the author declaring about his trust in God? In this verse, what is God like for the author? What does this mean? 3. Going back to verse 1, this is the first of many promises in this psalm. What is this first promise? Why is it foundational to every other promise in this psalm? 4. Read over verses 3 & 4. How would you characterize these promises? What are they promises for? What might be a contemporary application of these principles? 5. In verse 4, what does it mean to be covered with God's “pinions”? What is a “pinon”? What does this demonstrate about the close care that God has for His people? 6. Read over verses 5 to 7, and 10. What are the promises these verses contain? Are these blanket promises? Why or why not? 7. In verse 8, what will God's people see? If they are seeing “this” happen to the wicked, what does this mean about them and their standing with the Lord? Why do they have this standing? 8. Verse 9 gives the second of the four conditions in this psalm. What has this person done? What is the significance of the word “for” in this verse? 9. Do verses 11 & 12 sound familiar? If so, why? How was that occasion a misuse of these promises? How might someone misuse these promises today? 10. Verse 14 provides the third condition in this psalm. What is being spoken of in this verse? What does it mean to love God? What does it mean to know His name? What does God promise to those who love Him and know His name? Why can we rely upon this promise? 11. Verse 15 provides the final condition in this psalm. What does it mean to “Call upon the Lord”? Is this the same thing as a person who occasionally asks God for help? How is it different? In verses 15 & 16, what promises does God have for those who call upon Him? 12. When you think of your own walk with the Lord… a. Have you made God your fortress and refuge (vss. 2 & 9)? What does that look like? b. Have you loved God and known His name (vs 14)? How? c. Have you called upon God (vs 15)? When? 13. Where have there been times in your own life when you've seen the promises of Psalm 91 fulfilled? When there have been times when life has not gone as you would have wanted or expected, how can you still trust God's sovereignty in the midst of life's challenges? The paradox of human existence reveals itself most clearly in our relationship with change. Despite living on a planet where transformation is constant, where we ourselves evolve from infancy through adulthood and beyond, we resist letting go with surprising tenacity. This resistance often stems not from attachment to what we're holding, but fear of the unknown that follows release.Drawing from her books and personal experiences, Dr. Bethann explores the nuanced art of letting go through contemplative questions that help us understand our own resistance. "What am I gaining by holding on? Who would I be without this? What am I afraid will happen if I let this go?" These gentle inquiries create space for self-discovery without judgment, allowing us to recognize patterns that keep us clinging to what no longer serves us.Key talking points include: • We are hardwired for change yet naturally resist it out of fear of the unknown• Letting go happens in degrees - sometimes subtly, sometimes dramatically• Questions like "What am I gaining by holding on?" can help us understand our resistance• Grief represents a unique form of letting go that follows its own timeline• When something dies within us through release, something new is always reborn• Trust the process of "unbecoming to become" as we shed old identities• Find joy in the unknown by remembering that love is the thread guiding us through changeReady to explore what might be waiting on the other side of release? This episode invites you to trust the process of "unbecoming to become" as you navigate your own journey of letting go. Share your experiences with release and transformation—what have you let go of that created space for something beautiful to enter your life?Join us next week for an all-new episode of Your Heart Magic and more psychology, spirituality, storytelling, and heart wisdom.--Your Heart Magic is a space where heart wisdom, spirituality, and psychology meet.
