Every two weeks, Michael and I release a podcast episode where we tell someone else's stories. Except that's not quite true. As we discuss every note on an album, or labor over every second of a concert recording, we also talk about ourselves. It's one way music becomes more than just art. Billy Joel's story becomes part of our stories, which becomes part of each other's, and ultimately a narrative of its own, all told in a language everyone speaks without realizing it. Maybe you've heard that musicians hold conversations when they perform. Or consider it this way: Michael and I went decades without knowing the other existed. Then, almost four years ago, we spoke for the first time as if we'd known each other all along. That's what makes the arts special. They explore ideas too big for our words to contain, in a way we can all understand. And, for my solo episode this year, I'm exploring this idea further. I'm starting with two songs where I play drums. One is a studio recording of a new work. The other is a live performance from the Great American Songbook. Next, I'm speaking with other podcasters and presenters about the stories they explore in movies and literature. You'll hear from Dan Colon and Mike Manzi, the hosts of The Monsters That Made Us podcast. They started off discussing the classic Universal horror films, and are back with new episodes that take the topic a step further. Finally, I'm speaking with Edward Petit. As the Senior Manager of Public Programs at the Rosenbach Museum here in Philadelphia, he launched the online Biblioadventures series in 2020. Participants from all over the world read a classic novel or body of work in small parts over a few months. Then, each week, Edward leads a curated, and somewhat interactive, online discussion featuring subject experts and artifacts from the Rosenbach's collection. There's no great cosmic revelation in all of this. I make no hypotheses and draw no conclusions. That's the nature of trying to tell a tale this big. The best I can do is present one small part of it and invite others to do the same.

NOTE: Alice Dunbar-Nelson's story includes acts of sexual violence. Listeners may wish to skip past the introduction to avoid this content. Poet, essayist, and activist Alice Dunbar-Nelson is perhaps best known as the widow of poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, but she is a remarkable figure in her own right. Born in New Orleans in 1875 to a mother who had only recently been freed from slavery and an unknown father, Alice graduated from Straight University (later Dillard University), became a teacher, and quickly started her own writing career. Throughout her life, Alice continued to teach and to write and to speak out on issues of women's suffrage and civil rights for African Americans. To learn more about Alice Dunbar-Nelson, I'm joined by Dr. Tara T. Museum and library exhibitions and collections have long been sources of public dialogue. Dr. Rosenbach and his brother and business partner Philip Rosenbach participated in one of the most ambitious exhibitions focused on rare books and documents in American history: the Freedom Train project of the 1940's, launched shortly after the end of the Second World War. The spirited public debate around equity, access, and narratives of American history inspired by the Freedom Train hold important insights for Americans today as we continue to consider how best to represent the origins and development of the nation. This episode of The Rosenbach Podcast shares the story of the Freedom Train and points listeners in the direction of other Rosenbach resources about telling inclusive stories from history.
Libraries, archives, museums, and the collections they contain are essential for the healthy functioning of democratic societies. Using the story of Dr. Rosenbach's charity book auction described in Episode 11 as a starting point, this episode of The Rosenbach Podcast features a conversation with Richard Ovenden, O.B.E., Bodley's Librarian at the University of Oxford. Our conversation explores cultural memory, information policy, and where our world may be headed with access to reliable information under threat. Mr. Ovenden discusses his new book, Burning the Books: A History of the Deliberate Destruction of Knowledge (Harvard University Press, 2020), and what lessons history has to teach us about when libraries and archives come under attack.
Tom Rosenbach joins the show talking about new things coming to BeeneGarter with their new ventures and merger. Tom and Bill then go over the NFL playoff picks from Draft Kings. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's not every day — or every decade — that you hear of a new university starting up. For a nonprofit, it's not the most lucrative business venture, and the startup costs and regulatory hurdles are intense. But Caitlin O'R. B. Carter and Maren Rosenbach are determined to build a new kind of higher-education institution in the Seattle area. In this first episode of 2022, we speak with these bold founders of Wright University. Named after Carter's late grandmother who was a lifelong educator, Carter and Rosenbach envision Wright University to be an inclusive four-year school focused on racial and social justice “by employing and educating those historically excluded by academia.” They are aiming to raise $500 million in capital to open a physical campus in the Seattle area and start enrolling students by fall of 2023. Listen in to learn more about their compelling vision and what it takes to start a new university in the midst of a worldwide pandemic.

In this episode of The Rosenbach Podcast, we will engage members of Quaritch's expert staff today to learn about the company's Titanic connections before turning to conversations about the state of the rare book trade today.

Titanic inspired his mother, Eleanor Elkins Widener, who survived the maritime disaster, to build a great library at Harvard University in her son's honor. She collaborated closely on the project with Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach—an endeavor that helped launch Dr. Rosenbach's career. In this episode of The Rosenbach Podcast, we will journey to Harvard University to learn more about the Widener Memorial Library, its collections, and the process by which it came to exist by speaking to a Harvard curator who works closely with books Harry Elkins Widener once owned. We will also speak with Harvard University experts in grief to gain insights about what inspired Eleanor Elkins Widener to create a library in her son's memory—and what her journey from anguish to triumph can teach us about healing from grief in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Rosenbach is eternally linked to the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic by means of Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach's friendship with young Philadelphia book collector Harry Elkins Widener, who died onboard the ill-fated vessel. In this episode of The Rosenbach Podcast, the first in a four-part miniseries about the Titanic, join podcast host Dr. Alexander L. Ames and Rosenbach Curator & Director of Collections Judith M. Guston in the Rosenbach reading room to learn the basic details of The Rosenbach's Titanic and Widener family story, as the two view historic documents and rare books in the collection that record this tragic but pivotal episode in the lives of The Rosenbach's founders.
The Rosenbach's collections draw researchers from around the world to visit our reading room and study books, manuscripts, and other objects. In this episode, recorded in the reading room, Elizabeth E. Fuller, the Librarian of The Rosenbach, introduces us to The Rosenbach's collections of rare books and manuscripts and shares a few of her favorite items in the collection. She also tells us about what it's like to be a Rosenbach researcher, and how anyone can visit the reading room to engage with our collection objects.
Books, historic documents, and other artifacts do not just record the past; they can inspire us to create a better future. In this episode of The Rosenbach Podcast, Philadelphia Poets Laureate Yolanda Wisher and Trapeta Mayson tell us about what objects in The Rosenbach's collection they find particularly inspirational for their own literary work. Wisher and Mayson, both of whom also serve on The Rosenbach's Board of Directors, share their thoughts about The Rosenbach, and what listeners should expect when they visit in person or engage in a virtual program. Both Mayson and Wisher read poems they've written, and the episode also features music recorded by these two multitalented, interdisciplinary artists—including selections from Mayson's album “This Is How We Get Through,” a collaboration with distinguished jazz artist Monnette Sudler.
The Rosenbach holds internationally-significant collections of fine art, decorative art, and rare books, some of which reside in the beautiful parlor in the historic Rosenbach home. Yet all is not as it seems in this familiar space, which is filled with artifacts documenting the globally-diverse history of early America and the Philadelphia region in particular. In this episode, recorded in The Rosenbach's parlor, Rosenbach Curator & Director of Collections Judith M. Guston tells us about the history of The Rosenbach, the work of curators and other collections professionals, and what the artworks and artifacts on display in the parlor reveal about history and culture.
How can rare books and special collections like those held at The Rosenbach speak to modern-day American life? Why are material artifacts important in understanding our cultures' history and future? In the first episode of The Rosenbach Podcast, join host Dr. Alexander Lawrence Ames for an evocative voyage into The Rosenbach's collections of American and British history and literature. Dr. Ames introduces books on The Rosenbach's shelves by famous authors Edna St. Vincent Millay and Sir Walter Scott to consider representations of gender and family in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, before reflecting on what the work of Edna St. Vincent Millay has to teach us about the economic and social labor of women—mothers in particular—as the United States grapples with the economic hardships laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic. Celtic harp music featured in this episode was arranged, performed, and recorded by Dr. Ames.

From May 28, 2019: From the Washington Post's February report that U.S. Cyber Command took a Russian disinformation operation offline on the day of the 2018 midterms to fight election interference, to the Pentagon's announcement last year that it would take more active measures to challenge adversaries in cyberspace, recent news about cyber operations suggests they are playing an increasingly important role in geopolitics. So how should the public understand how the United States deploys its cyber tools to achieve its goals? To help answer that question, at the 2019 Verify Conference, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation hosted a panel discussion featuring former CIA Deputy Director Avril Haines, former Pentagon chief of staff Eric Rosenbach, and New York Times national security correspondent David Sanger. Guston, Curator & Director of Collections at The Rosenbach, discusses early Jewish settlement of the colony and the remarkable Gratz family holdings at The Rosenbach today, which document that early heritage. Ms. Guston also comments on the theoretical and methodological challenges of adopting a material culture approach to the study of past religious and spiritual life, and the meaning of early Pennsylvania's religious plurality for American society today.

Podcast: Risky BusinessEpisode: Feature Podcast: Critical infrastructure security with Eric Rosenbach and Robert M LeePub date: 2019-10-31This podcast is brought to you by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and it’s the second in a series of podcasts we’re doing that are all about cyber policy. The Foundation funds a lot of interesting people and work in the cybersecurity space. So the idea behind this podcast series is pretty simple: we talk to Hewlett’s grant recipients, or experts in Hewlett’s network, about pressing policy issues and turn those conversations into podcasts. The whole idea is to get some policy perspectives out there among the Risky Business audience, which, funnily enough, includes a lot of policymakers. This podcast features both Eric Rosenbach and Robert M Lee talking about ICS security. Eric is the co-director of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School. He also heads the Defending Digital Democracy project there. Eric has a very long and somewhat fascinating resume. As United States Assistant Secretary of Defense he led the US Defense Department’s efforts to counter cyberattacks by Iran and North Korea on US critical infrastructure. He’s also worked as a Chief Security Officer in the private sector and served as Pentagon chief of staff from 2015-2017. Robert M Lee is the founder of Dragos Inc, a very well known company in the ICS/OT security space. Rob started out in infosec with the US Air Force as a Cyber Warfare Operations Officer tasked to the NSA, but as you’ll hear, Rob is actually pretty optimistic about the ICT/OT security challenge. The podcast and artwork embedded on this page are from Patrick Gray, which is the property of its owner and not affiliated with or endorsed by Listen Notes, Inc.

Businesses beware! On January 25, 2019, the Illinois Supreme Court issued a unanimous opinion resolving a contested interpretation of the state’s Biometric Information Privacy Act. In short, the high Court ruled in Rosenbach v. Six Flags Entm't Corp., that to state a claim under the Act, a plaintiff need not allege actual harm. In this podcast, attorney Brian Massimino explains why this decision has opened the floodgates for more litigation in this area.

An event at the Rosenbach with The Citizen’s Larry Platt asks a question of our time: How can we live in the age of Facebook?
There’s no question that fintech will disrupt treasury and finance, right? According to Eric Rosenbach, there are three significant challenges that need to be overcome before mass adoption does occur. A former Pentagon Chief of Staff and Assistant Secretary of Defense, for six years Rosenbach led the Department of Defense on cyber issues, including during high-profile attacks on the United States by Iran and North Korea. He’s also a former Army intelligence officer and commander of a telecommunications intelligence unit, serving in Bosnia and Kosovo. Rosenbach will be the keynote speaker at Breakthrough Treasury and Finance this May in Nashville. Learn more at AFPonline.org/Breakthrough.
Last Thursday, panelists discussed the recent coverage of gun violence after the Parkland, Fl., shooting and what real solutions look like for Philadelphia and the country.
We came, we saw, we conquered ... Ulysses, James Joyce's modern masterpiece, and what's been called the most difficult book in the English language. Did we understand what we read? You be the judge. (If we had to put a number on it, we'd say we got about 15% of it all. But that's what rereading is for, right?)In Episode 006: Getting Used to Ulysses, listen in to our thoughts about modernism; the Blooms; dear, dirty Dublin; and just what to make of this bear of a book. And then tell us what you think in the comments below! To reread with us, grab a copy of Ulysses at your local bookstore or neighborhood library, or download it from your favorite digital book space.Beyond Re:ReadWe are all about reading Ulysses with a lot of support. If you live in or around Philadelphia, check out the schedule of courses at The Rosenbach, which regularly keeps Ulysses on its roster. If you're reading solo, grab a handy guidebook. We recommend Ulysses Annotated by Don Giford and Robert Seidman, as well as The New Bloomsday Book by Harry Blamires. And for free online sources, don't miss Spark Notes! The history of the publication of Ulysses is about as fascinating as the text itself, and no one covers it better than Kevin Birmingham in The Most Dangerous Book: The Battle for James Joyce's Ulysses. Fun FactsEvery June 16 cities all over the world celebrate Bloomsday to commemorate Leopold Bloom's epic one-day trek through Dublin chronicled in Ulysses. Joyce chose the date, June 16, for Ulysses because it marked the date of his first day with his wife, Nora. Ulysses was first serialized in the literary magazine The Little Review, whose publishers faced an obscenity charge for its content.

"I am one of a hundred" [ILLU] Well, we managed to do it. And it only took us nine years, an 18-month hiatus, one lost episode and thousands of fans. That's right, it's our 100th episode. We asked you what you wanted to hear for the centenary of the first podcast for Sherlock Holmes devotees, and time and again, we heard from you, telling us to do a retrospective - a look back at our favorite moments from what we've accomplished. We also asked you what your favorite moments are and what you wanted to know from us. Well, we managed to deliver on both. Our 100th episode gave us a chance to reflect on exactly what turning 100 means, and to dive back into our murky and fuzzy origins. We try to answer some of your queries and we celebrate those who joined us previously before launching into our top memories of the show, as represented in audio clips. Our Gas-Lamp features two readings, including a new one created just for this episode. Finally, we wrap up with a couple of important announcements that you won't want to miss. We thank Mary Miller for her ongoing and generous support of our program on . Perhaps you'd like to become a patron in honor of our 100th show. If ongoing support scares you, are welcome too. Additional Thanks We have so many of you to thank — from those of you who wrote in with feedback, to those who provided reviews, created something for us, provided financial support, and of course, those who appeared on the show. Or certainly more than they'd prefer. "a tremendous abyss" [FINA] The BSI Manuscript series continues to churn out remarkable books on an annual basis. In 2015, we're pleased to see the manuscript for "The Empty House" printed, analyzed and opined in , edited by Robert Katz, BSI ("Dr. Ainstree"), Steven Rothman, BSI ("The Valley of Fear") and Andrew Solberg, BSI ("Professor Coram"). The trio of editors joined us for a discussion of how this project came about - including getting access to the MS from the famed in Philadelphia. The inimitable Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach (who is most decidedly NOT a physician), rare book dealer and bibliophile, owned the original manuscript and it has remained with his collection in the museum and library. Of course, seeing the story in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's own handwriting is illuminating - particularly as one can look at the corrections (or lack thereof) and get a sense of the author's thought process. Seeing that in light of Holmes's resurrection in "The Empty House" is even more thrilling. Contributors to this volume include Catherine Cooke, BSI ("The Book of Life"), who investigates the location of the Empty House, based on previous scholarship throughout the ages; Lyndsay Faye, BSI ("Kitty Winter") who contributes a short story; Russell Merritt, BSI ("The Trepoff Murder") with a look at the Col. Morans in film; Brent Morris on sleight of hand and card playing; Chris Redmond, BSI ("Billy") and Lindsay Colwell on the theme of resurrection; and more. In addition to discussing everything that went into this volume, we have a sneak preview of the next volume that Bob and Andy are working on together. While they don't yet have a title, the topic is certainly one that will attract a number of readers. Mental Exaltation We're pleased to bring you another entry in our "Mental Exaltation" quiz program, inspired by NPR's Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me! and written by IHOSE quizmaster Nick Martorelli. . "My mind," he said, "rebels at stagnation. Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram, or the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere. I can dispense then with artificial stimulants. But I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave for mental exaltation. In this episode, we welcome James O'Leary of Natick, Massachusetts to the show as a contestant. James has a harrowing triumverate of math questions to answer (do we detect the hand of Prof. Moriarty, former math tutor and Col. Moran's boss?). Listen to see how he did. We wrap up with our regular Gas-Lamp reading, this time taken from the General Editor's Preface from the BSI Manuscript Series. Marcel Rosenbach, "Der NSA-Komplex. Edward Snowden und der Weg in die totale Überwachung". Geht es beim Ausspionieren der Bürger wirklich nur um Terrorabwehr? Streben die USA eine totale Vormachtstellung an?
Derick Dreher has been the Director of the Rosenbach since 1998. He has an M.A. in the History of Art from Yale University, and is a summa cum laude graduate of Princeton. A Fulbright scholar, he was awarded a Kress International Research Fellowship, for research in Germany. A specialist in graphic arts of the Renaissance, he has published on a variety of subjects, including prints and drawings ranging from Dürer to Daumier, and has spoken internationally on drawings, rare books, libraries and the art of memory. We met at the Museum on a rainy Philadelphia morning to talk about the life, loves and business practices of celebrated bookseller and collector 'Doctor' Abraham Simon Wolf Rosenbach, who got his PhD. in 1901, and subsequently went into business with his older ambitious Anglophilic brother Philip who sold fine and decorative arts. The Doctor was bent on selling books and manuscripts. We examine his ability to turn customers into collectors, to build libraries, to serve as an advisor not a dealer; his first great customer, street car magnate Harry Widener, who went down with the Titanic; what $100,000 bought in 1912, the Doctor's relationship with the Huntingtons and Folgers, his brilliant, ruthless book buying and selling practices, his skill at manipulating prices and the media, the manuscript of Alice in Wonderland, making private collections public, the Museum's 333,000 odd documents, the manuscript of James Joyce's Ulysses, bought at auction for the reserve price, Stoker's notes for Dracula, Conrad's manuscripts, tours as appetizers, the correspondence and physical library of Marianne Moore, and Maurice Sendak as a bridge to the museum's entire collection.
