A live SXSW panel on how employee complaints illuminate the path to organizational innovation.Wrong question: How can AI revolutionize productivity in my organization?Right question: What do my employees hate most about their jobs? For the Portland Trail Blazers, a winning game plan for AI implementation didn't begin with a tech-first approach — it began with a talk-first one. “The whole concept was to talk about pain points," explains David Long, VP of Digital Innovation, describing the "Lunch and Launch" sessions where employees could openly share frustrations about their daily work. “People really enjoy talking about what they hate about their jobs,” says Christa Stout, Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer, and as they did, they illuminated opportunities for optimization. “By getting this insight across the whole company, it is already opening our eyes [to how] we can potentially transform the business more broadly,” Stout says.In this special live episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, recorded at SXSW, host Matt Abrahams leads a panel with Long, Stout, and Stanford colleague Jeremy Utley, exploring how "catharsis catalyzes change.” For any team wanting to implement new technology or rethink workflows, these experts reveal how creating space for complaints can catalyze meaningful innovation throughout an organization.Episode Reference Links:Jeremy UtleyDavid LongChrista StoutEp.77 Quick Thinks: AI Has Entered The Chat – A "Conversation" with ChatGPTEp.134 How to Chat with Bots: The Secrets to Getting the Information You Need from AI Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (04:42) - The Business Behind Basketball (06:13) - Why AI and Why Now? Since you can only get so far with surveys of how frequetly registered behavior technicians want to quit their jobs due to burnout, we wondered, is it possible to gather more relevant, actionable research questions? Enter Dr. Nicole Gravina who, with her colleagues, used qualitative analysis research design to dig deeper into more of the “whys” behind how burnout develops for RBTs in Florida, and what supervisors can do to help. Maybe it's the lousy Smarch weather, but we're in a bit of a mood to start of this month. Not because our special guests aren't awesome. We had so much fun learning about qualitative analyses in exploring RBT burnout with Dr. Nicole Gravina and how to be more ethically responsible in creating meaningful goals for autistic adolescents and adults with Dr. Shanna Bahry. And not because we're not reviewing tough issues like turnover in human services, deconstructing ableist practices in the medical model, and respectfully disagreeing with the abolitionist neurodiversity critique. Now that I'm writing about all the awesome episodes coming out this month, I can't even remember why we sound so crabby. Oh, right…the state of the United States political system. And rude emails. Tutorials can be awesome, but they can also be suck-tacular. They can be brief, or overly drawn-out. They can sometimes hold your hand, and they can sometimes be Dark Souls. The one thing that most games have in common is that they each have one, even if you might not realize that it's there. In today's episode, the boys use what *some* might call "QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS" to determine how different games approach teaching new players their mechanics, as well as engage in a broader discussion about how we as individuals go about learning. I hope we teach you a thing or two...
In our American quest for a more perfect union, we often mistake unity for sameness. We mistake unity for conformity. But the functional unity of a system—seems to actually require diversity, distinction, and difference. In this episode, Christy Vines (Founder/ CEO, Ideos Institute) reflects on the problem of division today; how we increasingly invest our identity in politics instead of faith or spirituality; humility and privilege; the definition of unity and the assumption of diversity in it; the centrality of empathy; and how to cultivate an empathic wisdom grounded in the life and witness of Christ. The Ideos Institute is currently sponsoring 31 days of Unity leading up to the 2024 election. Now in his third year, he dives into what he's researching and working on in response to Truth Fairy's insightful questions.Dr. T tells Truth Fairy that the current working title of his PhD subject is “Psychedelic Healing and Interpersonal Neurobiology: A Qualitative Integration”. Truth Fairy digs into what the subject means and how Dr. T views interpersonal neurobiology. Their conversation reveals Dr. T's thoughts and the purpose behind his study in a very honest way.The discussion Dr. T and the Truth Fairy have through the course of the interview weaves through topics of psychedelics and manifestations, relationship with one's body, the burden placed on therapists, schema therapy, Dr. T's term of “embeddedness”, and beyond. This is a revealing discussion between friends that opens up truly fascinating things to ponder.“That speaks to that aspect of embeddedness which is that we're embedded in a natural environment, and that our system mirrors and reflects the systems around us as well, like the shell and the inner ear and also just the biology of ourselves. You look at a plant cell, you look at a human cell, and there is a lot of similarity there. There's some uniqueness, but we share a common ancestry with all life on earth, and we are so, so connected.” - Dr. TResources discussed in this episode:Dr. Dan SiegelAntonio Damasio---Punk Therapy: website |email

Bill Kousoulas holds a doctorate in psychology, specializing in positive psychology, the science of “what goes right in life.” Most of his doctoral research is in the area of post-traumatic growth - the good outcomes that we gain by navigating our challenging life experiences. Bill and Jaci founded Phenomenology Research Professionals, a practice in which they focus on the correlations between paranormal experiences and post-traumatic growth. On December 15, 1967, trauma erupted in West Virginia - as the small river town of Point Pleasant had just experienced the deadliest bridge collapse in U.S. history. Before the bridge collapse, scores of area residents experienced a year-long barrage of paranormal phenomena. Reports of UFOs, lights in the sky, and Mothman plagued the area for thirteen months to the date, halting abruptly on Dec 15. The anomalous activity and catastrophic bridge collapse each caused great emotional, physical, and psychological strain to the people of this otherwise idyllic Appalachian region. In 2020, Phenomenology Research Professionals began developing a plan to conduct a scientific study about the after-effects of the Silver Bridge Disaster, the associated paranormal phenomena, and the good things that have come to pass in the region since the late 1960s. https://www.amazon.com/Bridging-Tragedy-Silver-Linings-Mysterious/dp/B0BCDPJDKY

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A Quick Qualitative Analysis of Laypeople's Critiques of Longtermism, published by Roh on August 15, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. While preparing this post, How to Talk to Lefties in Your Intro Fellowship was posted and it received some interesting pushback in the comments. The focus of this post is not reframing EA marketing that may weaken its epistemic status but exploring misconceptions of EA longtermism that its marketing may produce. See footnote for more details. Summary I coded 104 comments of Ezra Klein and William MacAskill's podcast episode “Three Sentences that Could Change the World — and Your Life” to better understand the critiques a layperson has of longtermism. More specifically, I wanted to capture the gut-instinct, first-pass reactions to longtermism, and not true philosophical arguments against longtermism. Because of this particular sample, this analysis is especially relevant to left-leaning, EA-inclined but EA-unfamiliar individuals. One reason examining people's first takes in detail might be informative is that it helps us identify the way in which longtermist messaging can be misinterpreted when there's a large inferential gap between EAs and well-meaning people. Finally, following MacAskill's What We Owe the Future book release, I anticipate a surge of discussion on longtermism generally. Summarized Takeaways (see Interpretation for more detail & context): In discussions about longtermism with left-leaning / progressive people completely new to the movement, here are things to keep in mind. Note that other groups may not generate such misconceptions from traditional EA rhetoric. Prepare for concerns about longtermism being anti-climate change Explain how the future world's well-being is also affected by longtermist causes (i.e. elephants can also be turned into paperclips) Make explicit ways the animal welfare is being considered in EA efforts Discuss how overpopulation may be overestimated as an issue and not a huge contributor to climate change when discussing the long term future Prepare for despair about the future Challenge underlying assumptions that big change is made only through political venues by pointing out effective change pathways outside of politics (academic research, non-profit work, non-partisan policy work) & generally EA focuses that have have high tractability Clarify longtermist approaches to assessing and overcoming Challenge underlying assumptions about how soon and how likely the end of the world is Legitimizing the movement Emphasize EA as a Question, not a set of cause areas Explain longtermism's role as a practical movement (and not just a thought experiment Reference the Iroquois tribe's efforts towards sustainability as an historical precedence for longtermism & acknowledge of non-white philosophical predecessors Highlight non-white-male EA work in longtermist discussions Discuss neartermist work, animal welfare work, and donation work to legitimize EA as a whole Emphasize EA's efforts towards moral circle expansion Things I think would be useful going forward: A comprehensive list of big EA achievements in longtermism For encouraging optimism and legitimizing the movement's efforts A historical track record of what important work EA has done. For legitimizing the movement, both in and out of the longtermism space Previous people have said this before A EA survey response to the statement: we should not destroy the earth in the effort to sustain human life. Methodology I read the online comments responding to the podcast, and summarized eight themes that the critiques fell into. Then, I went back and coded each comment into which themes they fit. I excluded comments that replied to other comments (either in a reply chain or that @'ed someone else's comment). This was done in a vaguely scientific manne...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A Qualitative Analysis of Value Drift in EA, published by MarisaJurczyk on the Effective Altruism Forum. Write a Review About a year ago, after working with the Effective Thesis Project, I started my undergraduate thesis on value drift in the effective altruism movement. I interviewed eighteen EAs about their experiences with value drift and used a grounded theory approach to identify common themes. This post is a condensed report of my results. The full, official version of the thesis can be found here. Note that I've changed some of the terms used in my thesis in response to feedback, specifically “moral drift”, “internal value drift”, and “external value drift”. This post uses the most up-to-date terminology at time of posting, though these terms still a work-in-progress. Summary Value drift is a term EAs and rationalists use to refer to changes in our values over time, especially changes away from EA and other altruistic values. We want to promote morally good value changes and avoid morally bad value changes, but distinguishing between the two can be difficult since we tend to be poor judges of our own morality. EAs seem to think that value drift is most likely to affect the human population as a whole, less likely to affect the EA community, and even less likely to affect themselves. This discrepancy might be due to an overconfidence bias, so perhaps EAs ought to assume that we're more likely to value drift than we intuitively think we are. Being connected with the EA community, getting involved in EA causes, being open to new ideas, prioritizing a sustainable lifestyle, and certain personality traits seem associated with less value drift from EA values. The study of EAs' experiences with value drift is rather neglected, so further research is likely to be highly impactful and beneficial for the community. Background What is Value Drift? As far as I can tell, “value drift” is an expression that was first used by the rationalist community, in reference to AI safety. It has not been discussed nor studied outside of the rationalist and EA communities - at least, not using the term “value drift.” Value drift has been defined as broadly as changes in values and as narrowly as losing motivation to do altruistic things. People seem to see the former as the technical definition and the latter as what the term implies, as value drift away from EA values is often seen as the most concerning value drift to an EA who wants to remain an EA, or altruistic more generally. However, we can certainly experience value drift towards EA values or experience value drift that keeps us just as aligned with EA. NB: Throughout this post, I use value drift to refer to a shift away from EA values, unless I specify otherwise. I discuss a few different types of value drift throughout this post: Hierarchical value drift: a change in one's hierarchy of values in which a value is not lost or gained, but rather its priority is changed. Transformative value drift: losing a previously-held value or gaining a new value. Abstract value drift: changes in abstract values, such as happiness or non-suffering. Concrete value drift: changes in concrete vales, such as effective altruism, animal welfare, global health, or existential risk-prevention. Value drift can lead us to act less morally than we otherwise would. However, it's possible that our behaviors can change without our values changing. Darius Meissner's forum post, “Concrete Ways to Reduce Value Drift and Lifestyle Drift”, makes the important distinction between value drift and lifestyle drift, where value drift refers to changes in values and lifestyle drift refers to changes in behaviors, often as a result of circumstances. Some academic research highlights a similar phenomenon called ethical drift, which refers specifically to behavior chan...

In this episode, Ian describes an issue he sees with qualitative analysis, whereby a kappa coefficient for inter-rater reliability is often met and then forgotten about, once, but that consistency in these reliability scores is problematic both within raters but also between raters. Furthermore, there is an issue of inter-subject disagreement and intra-subject disagreement. In the end, there seems to be a test-retest reliability problem both within and between subjects in qualitative analysis, which has heretofore not gotten much attention in the methodological realm, which Ian is attempting to shed some light on in this opinion piece.
Qualitative analysis is a part of fundamental analysis, which common investors fail to look at. This section holds the left-out essence of the qualitative way of finding the best-managed business. Investors of the early 20th century were fortunate to find the book "Common stock and Uncommon Profits (2007)" which constantly stresses the caliber of the managers and people at influential posts. Most of the fundamental analysis is concentrated on the quantitative side and the quality of the management is overlooked. Most of the league had been won without this imperative part of the analysis. This gameplay was transformed by a widely acclaimed investor and author, Philip Fisher, founder of Fisher & Co. Philip Fisher stressed more on the nature of how the management is run and promoters or CEOs' loyalty to the firm more than the financials of the business. Click the link below. In today's podcast, we discuss the best way to select the right stock for your portfolio. It can be a lot trying to determine the right stocks to add to your portfolio. Some people say invest in Penny Stocks. Some people say Growth Stocks is the way to go. Some people say Dividend Stocks are the best thing you can have. So many options and it can be confusing. Today, I break down the best way to analyze and determine the best choice for you. However, we have to start with the idea that stocks are business and not just numbers on a screen. Therefore to know the best option you must know about the business. The analysis of the company to understand it is called Fundamental Analysis. It has two parts: Qualitative and Quantitative The easiest way to understand Qualitative Analysis is that this is the thing that makes a company special. It is the Mamba Mentality of the company. It is the sauce within the Krusty Krab burger that makes it dominate. Thing that makes the business special. On the other hand Quantitative Analysis is simple the numbers of the company. The financials, the dollars and cents of the company. I will be focusing on the Qualitative Aspect of the business, with three questions: Question 1: Do you understand the business? Question 2: Does the business have a competitive advantage? Question 3: What is the management team like? Plus … healing! Does this sound impossible? Hang on for the ride … and watch things improve in your life! ____________________________________________________ STRESS, ANXIETY AND YOUR BRAIN HOW TO PROFIT FROM STRESS In my 2018 teaching “Anointed Slowdown: Preparation for Your Future” I told people to: Slow down NOW. Get involved helping others. Do NOT overload yourself with schedule. Cut out in your mind's eye what you want to do in the future. Write down your Holy Spirit goals and claim Mark 11:24 regularly. I told my subscribers, “SLOW DOWN NOW!” I warned them, “The reason you need to slow down NOW is because stressful times are coming. You will need all the “preparation” you can get to maintain spiritual equilibrium.” If you have not done so, study my teachings below: Dealing with Stress In the End TimesFrustration and Your Future – The Way Out My definition of “balance”—the micro one—is to maintain a “peace zone” out of which you refuse to wander. That is, stay in Area 14 where you refuse to be bothered: by Satan, by demons, by people … even by Christians. As a graduate industrial engineer, I was required to study and know such subject matter as: Strength of Materials, Dynamics, Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis, and, in addition, upper level Physics and Electro-Chemistry. I find it interesting that the physical (or, physics) definition of stress is two fold and more correctly applicable to the human genome: An applied external force or system of forces that tends to strain or deform a body. Therefore, as pertains to the human condition, we could accurately say that stress (either from external or internal forces) is: “a mentally, physically, or emotionally disruptive or upsetting condition occurring in response to adverse external or internal influences and capable of affecting physical health, usually characterized by increased heart rate, a rise in blood pressure, muscular tension, irritability, and depression.” Since we are a tripartite being (body, mind, spirit) we can reasonably assume that stress can affect us: physically, mentally, and spiritually; and that, since all three are interconnected, either one may also influence the others. The synergistic effect of which could produce total wreck, or breakdown! This is WHY some people who come to me for help seem to at first be manifesting total meltdown. THE BAD NEWS One psychologist reports that the average high school student today has the same level of anxiety as the average psychiatric patient in the early 1950's. _________________________ IMPORTANT FACTS TO KNOW Anxiety related issues are #1 health issue in the USA. The #2 issue for men after alcohol. Over $48 Billion spent yearly in USA on stress. Over $300 Billion if loss of productivity is included. 95% of teenagers have a friend dealing with stress. USA is #1 nation in world dealing with stress._________________________ THE GOOD NEWS Stress is essential to brain health. Paul Bendheim, M.D., states that, “Neuroscientists have discovered that, in order to learn, we need a certain amount of short-term tolerable stress to stay sharp and grow our brains.” Moderate, occasional stress promotes new cell generation. Enjoyable forms of self-induced stress (like physical exercise) can help our brains by improving short-term memory. Also, our overall health benefits from moderate stress by helping our immune system to stay on guard to protect against infectious micro-organisms and cancer. Let me give you four KEY curatives to stress and anxiety-related conditions: 1. STOP the activities that seem to be causing you stress. If you can not stop them completely, then force yourself to take pre-scheduled breaks for rest or recreation. (A non scheduled break could be as soon as you feel the outset of anxiety or stress.) 2. DO something you enjoy. Find a new hobby or recreation … do something you have always wanted to do: Ride a motorcycle. Fly an airplane. Build something. Learn to dance. 3. SPEAK affirmations to yourself. Write them on paper, or record them and play them back. The importance is TO SAY them to yourself. The speech mechanism is vitally associated with your central nervous system. You can bring healing and strength to your whole system, especially if you are saying the Word of God. Find scriptures that pertain to: Your situation; and, Your new goals (recreation or desires). One great resource available is my book, Total Person Toolbox: Words That Work. 4. PRAY in tongues: the language of the Holy spirit. A. When you pray in tongues, you are praying according to the will of God, even if you do not understand it. “He who, when speaking, uses the gift of 'tongues' is speaking, not to men, but to God, for no one understands him; yet in the Spirit he is speaking of hidden truths.” (1 Corinthians 14:2) B. Also, when you even just sigh (or groan) in tongues, you are allowing the Holy Spirit to intercede for you according to the will of God, and thereby bring you therapeutic help. “Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself makes intercession for s with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” (Romans 8:26-27) C. One of the great advantages when you praise God in tongues is that you are engaged in pure worship. There are not enough words in your native language (Hebrew, English, Spanish, etc.) to tell God how wonderful He is, and how much you love Him. However, when you praise Him in tongues, the Holy Spirit (the Ruach HaKodesh) is praising the LORD through you, and God comes on the scene with healing power. The Bible tells us God lives in the praises of His people. “But you are holy, You who inhabit the praises of Israel.” (Psalm 22:3) Here is a link to a great resource on the Holy Spirit PLUS gifts of the Spirit (including speaking in tongues): How to Receive God's Power with Gifts of the Spirit, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY Learn to make stress work for YOU. Monitor the daily (or weekly) events that cause stress and anxiety. Pray and ask God to help you recognize chronic stress levels that are UNhealthy. These can affect memory and judgment resulting from impaired nerve cell growth and their cable-like connections. Also, too much high, chronic, stress affects the “executive center”―prefrontal cortex of frontal lobes―of the brain causing bad decisions. Other problems that can result from “skewed” brain instructions are increased risk of heart attacks, high blood pressure, cancer and intestinal problems (lke IBS) and ulcers. A five year study showed that those with “high stress proneness” had twice the risk of developing Alzheimer's Disease. Listen to your body: frequent stomach sensations, tension headaches, muscle tension and soreness, especially in the neck and shoulders … AND chronic fatigue can all be signs … in addition to FEAR. Do NOT accommodate fear. WHAT ABOUT FEAR Another “sign upon the road” is FEAR. The basic stress response is “fight or flight” and is genetic. However, chronic stress can damage memory formation and weaken the immune system. Love is stronger than fear. The Bible says, “Love casts out fear.” The next time fear knocks at the door of your heart, let faith answer it. Remember … the Bible says to followers of the Messiah: “For God has NOT given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7) Fear is a spirit. You've received a Spirit NOT of fear. Resist fear. Just speak to it and say, "I won't take you. I refuse you. God says I've received not a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." Fear knocked at the door … faith answered … and no one was there. If you allow fear to linger it rewires your brain and bypasses the prefrontal cortex. “A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.” (Proverbs 27:12) I have done lots of investing through the years by day trading and investing in commodities and futures where I operated with large margins for the advantage of leverage. Of course, if the trades went “south” the margins worked to my disadvantage. But, here, I want to illustrate the good use of margins. The definition of “margin” is “An amount available beyond what is actually needed.” One source describes it as, “The space between our current load and our limits.” WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE MARGIN Stress goes up. Focus narrows. Relationships suffer.*** You are not prepared for the future. *** Notice: Relationships only start … or are nourished … during margin. In Luke 17:1, Messiah Yeshua taught: “Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come ...” This is where “margin” can be a buffer to protect you from stress. HOW YOU DEVELOP MARGIN Slow down. Simplify things in your life: activities, stuff, technology. Allow for and establish time, money, work and relationship margins. Give yourself SPACE. Don't make things too binding … too tight … too limited: Plan for MARGIN in your time, your financial dealings, your work, your relationships! FINALLY Good News: One of God's Names in the Hebrew language—Jehovah Rapha―means “The LORD Who Heals.” He is, “The LORD your physican.” He can heal your stress, your body, your soul and your spirit. All you have to do is ASK Him. Just pray this prayer: “God in Heaven, I need healing. Please forgive my sins. I turn away from them and turn to YOU. Please come into my life and take over NOW. Save me and heal me. Give me Eternal Life. Help me to live for YOU here on Earth, and take me to Heaven when I die. I ask this in the Name of Your Son: Jesus, the Messiah.” "I am the LORD that heals you."Torah: Exodus 15:26 Baruch haba b'Shem Adonai.Your friend, Prince Handley President / RegentUniversity of Excellence Podcast time: 16 minutes, 2 seconds. In this podcast for the Janaury 2019 issue of the Journal of Transcultural Nursing, Editor-in-Chief Norma Cuellar and author Elizabeth Allen discuss the article "Facilitators and Barriers of Cervical Cancer Screening and Human Papilloma Virus Vaccination Among Somali Refugee Women in the United States: A Qualitative Analysis."
In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll explore some more curiosities and unanswered questions from Greg's research, including a misplaced elephant, a momentous biscuit failure, a peripatetic ax murderer, and the importance of the 9 of diamonds. We'll also revisit Michael Malloy's resilience and puzzle over an uncommonly casual prison break. Intro: In 1846, geologist Adam Sedgwick sent his niece some tips on pronouncing Welsh. In 1961, psychologist Robert Sommer reflected that a person's importance is reflected in his keyring. Sources for our feature on notes and queries: Justin Kaplan and Anne Bernays mention the naming of Deathball Rock, Oregon, in their 1999 book The Language of Names: What We Call Ourselves and Why It Matters. The anecdote about the King Kong animator is from Orville Goldner and George E. Turner's 1975 book The Making of King Kong. The anecdote about Fred Astaire and the editor is from Brian Seibert's 2015 history of tap dancing, What the Eye Hears, supplemented by this New Yorker letter. Oxford mathematician Nick Trefethen's jotted thoughts are collected in Trefethen's Index Cards, 2011. The identity of the "bravest man" at the Battle of the Little Bighorn is discussed in Thom Hatch's 2000 Custer and the Battle of the Little Bighorn: An Encyclopedia and Frederic C. Wagner III's 2016 Participants in the Battle of the Little Big Horn. But I don't know any source that makes a decided claim as to his identity. "Icy Mike," the bull elephant skeleton discovered on Mount Kenya, is mentioned in Matthew Power and Keridwen Cornelius' article "Escape to Mount Kenya" in National Geographic Adventure 9:7 (September 2007), 65-71. Bernard Suits defines games in The Grasshopper: Games, Life and Utopia, 1978. The anecdote about Maidenhead, Berkshire, is from Gordon Snell's The Book of Theatre Quotes, 1982. The observation about William Byrd's diary is in Margaret Fleming's "Analysis of a Four-Letter Word," in Maledicta 1:2 (1977). Bill James' book about the Villisca ax murders is The Man From the Train, co-written with his daughter Rachel McCarthy James. Richard O. Jones describes the Cincinnati privy disaster of 1904 in this Belt Magazine article of Nov. 4, 2014. (Thanks, Glenn.) Here's a diagram of the Woodingdean Well, the deepest hand-dug well in the world. Barry Day mentions P.G. Wodehouse's characterization of his comic novels in his 2004 book The Complete Lyrics of P.G. Wodehouse (according to N.T.P. Murphy's 2006 A Wodehouse Handbook). Wikipedia gives a long list of reputed reasons the 9 of diamonds is called the "curse of Scotland." English curate Francis Kilvert mentions a mysterious organ grinder in his diary entry for May 12, 1874. Horace Walpole's owl whistles are mentioned in Arthur Michael Samuel's Mancroft Essays, 1912. The story about the Dabneys' clothesline telegraph appears in David Williams' I Freed Myself: African American Self-Emancipation in the Civil War Era, 2014, among other modern sources. Williams cites John Truesdale's The Blue Coats, and How They Lived, Fought and Died for the Union, from 1867. I'd be more sanguine with more authoritative sources. DESCRIPTION: One of the most requested areas of help today is from people suffering from stress. This podcast discusses four avenues to help you in your journey of WHOLENESS. HEALING FROM STRESS One of the most requested areas of help today is from people suffering from stress. One medical source defines stress as: “Forces from the outside world impinging on the individual.” However, I disagree with this definition – or, at least I think it is only a partial definition. As a graduate industrial engineer, I was required to study and know such subject matter as: Strength of Materials, Dynamics, Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis, and, of course, upper level physics and chemistry. I find it interesting that the physical (or, physics) definition of stress is two fold and more correctly applicable to the human genome: An applied external force or system of forces that tends to strain or deform a body. The internal resistance of a body to such an applied force or system of forces. Therefore, as pertains to the human condition, we could accurately say that stress (either from external or internal forces) is: “a mentally, physically, or emotionally disruptive or upsetting condition occurring in response to adverse external or internal influences and capable of affecting physical health, usually characterized by increased heart rate, a rise in blood pressure, muscular tension, irritability, and depression.” Since we are a tripartite being (body, mind, spirit) we can reasonably assume that stress can affect us: physically, mentally, and spiritually … and that, since all three are interconnected, either one may also influence the others. The synergistic effect of which could produce total wreck, or breakdown! This is WHY some people who come to me for help seem to at first be manifesting total meltdown. Let me give you the four KEY curatives to this, and lesser, conditions: 1. STOP the activities that seem to be causing you stress. If you can not stop them completely, then force yourself to take pre-scheduled breaks for rest or recreation. (A non scheduled break could be as soon as you feel the outset of anxiety or stress.) 2. DO something you enjoy. Find a new hobby or recreation … do something you have always wanted to do. Ride a motorcycle. Find scriptures that pertain to: 1. Your situation; and, 2. Your new goals (recreation or desires). 4. PRAY in tongues. A. When you pray in tongues, you are praying according to the will of God, even if you do not understand it. “He who, when speaking, uses the gift of 'tongues' is speaking, not to men, but to God, for no one understands him; yet in spirit he is speaking of hidden truths.” (1 Corinthians 14:2) B. Also, when you even just sigh (or groan) in tongues, you are allowing the Holy Spirit to intercede for you according to the will of God, and thereby bring you therapeutic help. “Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. However, when you praise Him in tongues, the Holy Spirit (the Ruach haChodesh) is praising the LORD through you, and God comes on the scene with healing power. The Bible tells us that God lives in the praises of His people. “But you are holy, You who inhabit the praises of Israel.” (Psalm 22:3) Lift your hands and PRAISE Him in tongues right now. Mid-term Review, Qualitative Analysis
A look at research on how media coverage is having an influence Muslims, and whether cultural proximity has a role to play in this.
Of 521 patients with erectile dysfunction in whom a multidisciplinary approach was used, 145 (27.8%) showed venous leakage as (concomitant) etiology of the impotence in dynamic cavernosography. The rate of the maintenance flow corresponded well with the response to a standardized intracavernosal injection of vasoactive drugs (p < 0.05) in patients with venous leakage. The maintenance flow increased with the age in secondary impotent men. It was not statistically different in patients with or without concomitant arterial insufficiency (p = 0.19). Fifty-one of 145 patients (32.2%) presented a pathologic cavernosal drainage via a single venous system; 94/145 (64.8%) showed a combined venous leakage. The type of leakage corresponded neither to the maintenance flow nor to the response to intracavernosal injections. Our findings show that standardized intracavernosal testing and Doppler have a high predictive value for the status of the venous occlusive system. Exact evaluation of the type of leakage can be made by bidimensional cavernosography only.
