In This Episode You Will Learn About: Taking decisions faster Focusing on what is good Applying positive pressure Resources: instagram.com/drinklitepink Show Notes: People often dwell on their decisions for too long, worrying about whether it’s the right decision. But this worry paralyzes us from taking rapid action that can actually transform our lives. Instead of taking so much time to make a decision, you need to treat each decision as an experiment and be willing to correct. Every right decision will make up for several wrong ones, the key is to just make more decisions.

On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.’” In today’s episode, I give you practical tips on how to do just that – give a blessing those who are difficult to love in the midst of their hate and hurt. This podcast conversation is extremely special as Carole Finer sadly passed away earlier this year. I had the great privilege of performing with Carole and in this conversation we talk about her beginnings in experimental and improvised music, going back to the 60’s in London, at the start of this fascinating scene. She mentions many musicians and interesting artists she collaborated with and I have listed them all in the show notes. She talks about her experiences of performing, as far ranging as a large ensemble concert in Hampstead Town Hall to performing at the Munich Olympics in 1972. It was insightful and incredibly inspiring to hear about Carole’s life as an artist, a musician and sound artist and her world travels collecting field recordings. She talked so effortlessly, as she did on her own radio show ‘Sound Out’ on Resonance FM for many years. Her generosity and humility as a musician touched many people including myself and I feel privileged to have met her and grateful to have had this conversation. Asking for help can be seen as weakness. In this solo episode, Matt discusses that the true lack of courage is in NOT asking for help because it allows us to let ourselves off the hook. Quotable: “And I said, yeah, ask: They had what you needed. But because you weren't bold enough to ask for it, you didn't get it. And instead, you suffered in silence. And, yes, I was talking to my 12 year old son, but really I was talking to myself." SHOW NOTES: "People don't want, ya know, wrapped up in a nice bow and shiny right now. They just want the truth", (3:42). "There's always this feeling of I'm not enough. I don't have it yet. I don't have the resources I need to get it done...", (4:50). “Just speak from the heart and that's gonna do more for people than any kind of... trying to make yourself sound more produced than you really are, " (5:31). “Everything we do, we're throwing stones out into the pond, and those stones will have ripples. And those ripples can be for good, or for bad, depending on what our action is...", (6:46). “As long as you have humility and grace and you're not thinking 'It's all me,' I think there's something to be said for stepping into your power and realizing what you can do with your talents, and the impact that you can have,” (7:26). Deep thoughts at Chipoltle, (8:41). “And I said, yeah, ask: They had what you needed. But because you weren't bold enough to ask for it, you didn't get it. And instead, you suffered in silence. And, yes, I was talking to my 12 year old son, but really I was talking to myself,” (9:52). “When you ask someone for help, you are basically setting up a relationship of accountability,” (11:14). “If you don't ask for help, you are basically saying I'm not up to the task,” (12:24). A story about possibilities and my friend's Dad calling me out on copping out, (13:12). “How much are you leaving on the table? How much are you suffering because you didn't have the courage to ask for something that you need?” (16:09). The power of persistence, (17:30). I live a non-bionic life and have no interest in having a bionic hand. I like the way I was born and enjoy my one-handed life. Over the past couple of weeks I have had many people on social media send me links of bionic people doing bionic things with their bionic body parts. I have noticed a trend in the mainstream of all things bionic. There are great people doing great things with their bio-mechanical technology. I think this is a very cool and hip thing. However, it is not my thing. I like the way I was born and enjoy the life I live. I do not need two hands to be any more happy. I think this bio-mechanical bionic movement is an empowering and much needed societal development. It is just not my thing. This podcast is about how I love my non-bionic life. This week, economist and theorist Warren Mosler joins James and Antony to explain the details of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT). With 40 years of experience in finance and monetary operations, Mosler is a leading expert on MMT, is a co-founder of AVM—a brokerage, trading, and administrative services firm—and lectures on monetary economics around the world. He covers the important ramifications stemming from the adoption of MMT and how coercive shifts of resources benefit public infrastructure, and responds to criticisms of MMT. With supporters in Washington such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, MMT is quickly gaining a strong following, and Warren, James, and Antony discuss the important points on this winding theory and more. What makes someone superhuman? Is it their cape? Their blue tights? Their ability to fly, jump or leap? My guest today was curious about the subject and, instead of turning to Marvel, Superman or the X-Men franchise for answers, he searched the world to find the finest examples of individuals who personify the 11 'super-human' traits. Today he shares what his research means for us. Grab your journal, your cape (put it on!) and get ready to soar into life with Rowan Hooper. SHOW NOTES: "People who try lots of different things are more likely to find things they really like and are really good at." Check out this recent article from chess grandmaster John Nun who Rowan shares innately understood math since age 4. "IQ itself is quite stable throughout life, but it does not guarantee personal outcome. Lots of people who are incredibly successful do not have particularly high IQs." Memory, on the other-hand, is something we can all improve with tricks and practice. John and Rowan discuss the Marshmallow test check it out. This video shares the story of Ellen McArthur, the British sailor, Rowan talked about her drive + her world record for fastest solo circumnavigation of globe. What have you learned about focus, that we can apply as we try to sell more insurance + lead better lives? "It's about having a goal, something you want to do in the future or something you need to complete in the next hour. Either way, identifying the reason for doing it + keeping it clear in your mind. It doesn't have to be dramatic. Identifying a goal and finding steps towards it will help you achieve that goal." "That moment her life changed + she chose to make something of it. She was empowered by this appalling thing that happened." With longevity comes happiness. People I met over 100 had an incredible positivity, can-do attitude + innate happiness. Get back up again and carried on. that is something we can all strive to do a bit more, not to get disheartened or knocked down. to carry on. they had a curiosity about life, that trait did seem to be spread across all the people I met in different ways. If you enjoyed thinking about what you can do to improve your business, life + impact through Rowan's insights: Check out episode #103 with Brené Brown to get tips on how to improve your leadership through vulnerability. Or, episode #98 with Radha Agrawal on how to improve your sense of community + feel more connected. ROWAN HOOPER'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Lonesome Dove, Larry McCurty. It's an American Western, the characters in it stay with you forever, just like Huckleberry Finn. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Intensity of focus + ability to become obsessively interested enough to delve in and find new things. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? A steal box with old travel journals and photos. The reason it is in a steal box is that if there ever is a fire, it can survive. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Charles Darwin. He was my hero growing up because he was an incredibly wise and passionate man who changed our world. The first question I'd ask: What do we do now about understanding the world? I'd try to update him and then ask his advice. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? Do what you want to do. Don't force people to do things they don't want to do. Let them find their own way. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Don't drink so much! Just enjoy your youth. Feel it while you've got it. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? He was a nice guy, did a few cool things and inspired people with the stories he told of other people. *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe, rate & review on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. In this episode we chat with Tharani Jegatheeswaran who leads Deloitte Australia’s Social Impact Consulting Practise. So, if you’ve been listening for a while, you know that I am super passionate about business and impact, in particular seeing the two come together in ways that just make sense. Both for the business in terms of focusing on the core competencies of the business and leveraging that for impact. This is something that is really hard to balance and can often miss the mark with large corporations either taking part in activities that are so far removed from their strengths or it looking like the act of trying to create impact is just for marketing or publicity purposes. So, when I stumbled upon Deloitte and their social impact consulting practice I was extremely intrigued. Why does a Big Four accounting firm like Deloitte do social impact consulting? Is this for CSR purposes? is this for publicity because being involved in impact is ‘cool’? Are there business reasons behind this decision and if so, what were they? Do they charge clients for the consulting they do or is this pro bono? Enter, Tharani. Tharani leads Deloitte Australia’s Social Impact Consulting practice, a dedicated practice that works at the intersection of the not-for-profit (NFP) sector, government and business to deliver better outcomes for Australia’s vulnerable communities. Recognising that complex social issues cannot be addressed by any sector in isolation, Deloitte’s Social Impact Consulting practice focuses on being a convenor - facilitating greater cross-sectoral collaboration across the NFP, government and business sectors to design solutions that deliver systemic change and greater social impact. Anyway let’s hear more about Deloitte’s work in this area and let Tharani take it from here. And if you like this episode or know someone that will, please give it a share. Find Tharani on LinkedIn or Twitter and check out Deloitte social impact consulting website. SHOW NOTES “People think that non-profit or anything focussed on social impact has to be philanthropy, and it doesn’t” – [07:01] How does the business model work for Deloitte’s social impact consultancy? [07:01] What kind of challenges does a typical client come to Deloitte with? [09:40] What does the team look like in the business? [14:56] Tharani pitches the social impact consultancy to Deloitte [15:30] “Life is shades of grey and so can be your career” [16:30] How does Deloitte measure impact? [18:00] Tharani shares challenges she faced building a startup practice in a mature firm [19:40] “It’s not always glamourous” [21:44] “You need to be really clear about your ‘why’. Really understand the change you want to make. If it is within a large corporate, really understand the business case and the business benefits of the change that you’re trying to effect. And measure that in its holistic sense, not just in financial – but that’s really important if you’re going to do it in a for-profit, for-purpose sense, but also the other measures of success.” [22:20] “Make an impact in the market, and it will speak for itself internally.” [23:20] What does the future look like for social impact consulting? [24:00] “I would really hope that leaders across government, business and the social sector feel like they all have a role to play in tackling social issues, and that would really be a measure of success, that it’s not just the responsibility of the not-for-profit sector but more businesses are engaged in addressing some of the complex challenges of our time.” [25:00] “I think it would have been very easy to give up in those early stages if I wasn’t clear on my why.” – Tharani shares how she made the switch in her career. [27:40] Where does Tharani see things going for Deloitte’s social impact consulting? Moving past CSR and corporate volunteering days, to shared value. [28:00] “If I could prove we could achieve profit with purpose within Deloitte, then we would have the credibility to advise other corporates on how to achieve profit with purpose in a way that aligns with their core business. Now that we’ve done it, we have a much stronger case to work with other businesses. Whereas if we weren’t able to put our money where our mouth is, and try and prove it ourselves, it’s hard to advise with credibility to other businesses.” [30:58] Three Things [31:38] WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE QUOTE OR LESSON FROM THIS EPISODE? LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS!

Hello! YES I changed the name of the podcast! It is no longer Running Vegan Radio-- welcome to No Bull. I decided to rebrand my IG, blog, and podcast because of a big life change happening... which I explain in the episode. The content/theme of the podcast is THE SAME so don't worry about that. :) I explain what's been going on in my life in the beginning of the episode, and then we talk to HEATHER FULLER, the amazing chef who's worked at Per Se, Momofuku, Nix, and now owns her own non-dairy soft serve shop, Pineapple Express. We talk about her upbringing in Atlanta as an adopted twin, what it's like to work at a Michelin star restaurant, what made her open a vegan business, the successes/failures of her new venture, the power of IG, and SO MUCH MORE. "Hard work and applying yourself to be the very best you can be everyday: That is what life is all about." Today my boyhood hero joins us. Introducing him as a friend is a dream come true. Ozzie Smith is a 13-time, MLB Gold-Glove-winning short stop for the St. Louis Cardinals. When I was burned as a 9-year-old, Cardinals' announcer Jack Buck promised me John O'Leary Day at the Ballpark when I recovered. At John O'Leary Day: I got to meet Ozzie for the first time. This summer, on the 30th anniversary of that day, Ozzie and I reconnected. Join me and Ozzie as we talk about humility, being a role model, baseball and how each has allowed him to lead an inspired life. SHOW NOTES: "People are looking up at you, they are watching. Give them an example that is worthy. Make sure you leave people better when they walk away from you then they were when they walked towards you." Watch Ozzie interview John on Cardinals' Insider here. From growing up in a single-parent home, to being the only African American player on his minor league team: Ozzie shares the greatest lesson he learned repeatedly in life: You are only going to get out what you put in. Hard work, applying yourself to be the very best you can be everyday is really what life is all about. It comes from within, you gotta have that drive within you. You gotta be able to kick doubt out. Failure wasn't an option. No matter what I came up against, I had to strive, to work hard to make it. I didn't know what making it was. But I knew that if I was successful, it would make life better for my family. Winning is being able to help your team win psychologically. You give them confidence by being there. Today, Ozzie is passionate about the PGA Reach Program. OZZIE SMITH'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Charlotte's Web, one of the first books I ever read that I really enjoyed reading. 2. Tomorrow you discover your wealthy uncle shockingly dies at the age of 103; leaving you millions. What would you do with it? Kickstart the PGA Reach Program. Finding ways to help people who are less fortunate, John, because there is so much that can be done. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? Rawlings gave me a trophy that has each year I won a gold glove. That would be the one thing I'd grab for my grandkids; something they could look at and refer to who their grandpa was. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Jesus Christ that would be great; to sit and have a conversation with him. My first question: Why are we where we are, what happened? 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Be the best you you can be. That's as simple as it gets. if you adhere to that, good things happen. 6. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at age 20? Get involved in the tech world. It would give you the entree to do so much more for the world. You could do so much good. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? You were such an important part of my life! Watching you play baseball with my family - that is what we did. We enjoyed watching you and you brought us such enjoyment. It doesn't get any greater than that. *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe (automatically get new episodes), rate & review (help spread the word!) this podcast wherever you get your podcasts. Wow it's finally taper time in my marathon training and I gotta say I'm pretty excited about it. BUT before I get into my whole taper spiel, I give you the low-down on my last big long run I had last weekend-- the dreaded 20 miler. It was a DOOZY; I ran 7 miles followed by the Rock n Roll half marathon! So, I recap the race (which includes a story about a special fellow I met that day), and then go into why it's important to taper, how I'm tapering, and my advice on how to make the most of your taper. Duncan (vegan) and Liz (vegan-ish) are Youtubers who cook vegan food and navigate the challenges of a "mixed diet" relationship. They are hilarious, laid back, and easily one of my fave couples. In our interview, we chat about the misconceptions of Youtube, their Tinder love story, married life, why Liz isn't vegan yet (!), and so much more. I ran my second Airbnb Brooklyn Half last weekend. With 27,000 runners, it's the biggest half marathon in the United States! I somehow managed to pull off a new PR AND negative splits. I recap it all (what I ate, how I felt at each section, what I did after), in this episode. THANKS FOR LISTENING! If you have never heard from our guest, you are in for a treat. Get your mind ready to absorb what all Helen Alvaré has to share with us on Freedom. Professor Alvaré helps us start to see how we should be seeking freedom-for not freedom-from the misguidings in our world. We as a culture today are more free than we have ever been yet there does not seem to be contentment. Is it possible that women are seeking to fill themselves with some ideology that will never truly satisfy themselves? True freedom comes in the form of total self giving not in this over individualized culture we live in. Please consider supporting our Podcast Our Guest: Helen Alvaré is a Professor of Law at George Mason University School of Law, where she teaches Family Law, Law and Religion, and Property Law. She publishes on matters concerning marriage, parenting, non-marital households, and the First Amendment religion clauses. She is faculty advisor to the law school’s Civil Rights Law Journal, and the Latino/a Law Student Association, a consultor for the Pontifical Council of the Laity (Vatican City), an advisor to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (Washington, D.C.), founder of WomenSpeakforThemselves.com, and an ABC news consultant. She cooperates with the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations as a speaker and a delegate to various United Nations conferences concerning women and the family. In addition to her books, and her publications in law reviews and other academic journals, Professor Alvaré publishes regularly in news outlets including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Huffington Post, and USA Today. She also speaks at academic and professional conferences in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Australia. Prior to joining the faculty of George Mason, Professor Alvaré taught at the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America; represented the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops before legislative bodies, academic audiences and the media; and was a litigation attorney for the Philadelphia law firm of Stradley, Ronon, Stevens & Young. Professor Alvaré received her law degree from Cornell University School of Law and her master’s degree in Systematic Theology from the Catholic University of America. Call to Action – Try to take a look inward to see if there may be something that you are seeking to be free from rather than seeking to be free to be or to do. Ask the Lord to show you where you have been conformed to this world rather than to His plans for you. Scripture – “I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world[a] but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” – Romans 12:1-2 Saint Quote – “I have given everything to my Master: He will take care of me… The best thing for us is not what we consider best, but what the Lord wants of us!” – St. Bakhita
Overview: David Tosch has an accomplished career as a business leader in the dental laboratory industry and as an ultra-marathon and endurance runner. He is also the founder of a company that creates shorter and longer distance trail runs, including ultra endurance trail runs. In this episode we talk about breaking audacious goals into shorter, more achievable goals. David’s Biography: David Tosch is an accomplished business leader, and ultramarathon runner. He credits his start in distance running to a time in junior high school, when he realized that to be a distance runner in track he didn’t have to run fast. He attended the University of Texas system, graduating from the Univesity of Texas at Dallas Cum Laude with a degree in accounting. He ran his first marathon around the 1979-1980 timeframe and in 1980 he founded Tosch Laboratory, Inc. (Dental Laboratory) in Dallas, Texas, and later moved the lab to Birmingham, AL. His list of marathons and ultra endurance runs is extensive, including multiple 100 mile endurance runs, such as The Pinhoti 100,The Leadville 10, the Wasatch 100, the Tahoe Rim Tiral 100, The Rocky Raccoon 100, the Grindstone 100 and the Hardrock 100. He has also participated in numerous Ironman events and even had the opportunity to run with Bill Rogers in 1980. David is the founder of Southeastern Trail Runs and the Run For Kids Challenge, which raises money for Camp Smile-A-Mile. Show Notes: People may not realize what they can truly accomplish in life and by setting a series of goals along a path to an overall stretch goal they may be able to reach new levels of achievement. David shows people how to do this by creating a series of runs, starting out at 5k at the beginning of the trail running season and going all the way up to 100 miles at the end of the season. From a business leadership standpoint this may be thought of as creating a series of SMART goals to achieve stretch goals. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely. David discussed the need for runners to think about safety when planning their trail runs and consider some of the safety requirements that go into it. Lessons may be drawn from this and compared to High-Reliability Organizations (HRO). David describes techniques and how he “tricks himself” to help him achieve his long term goals when the runs get to their hardest points. 29:09-Randy takes David’s advice and makes the connection to achieveing safety or quality goals, such as an ISO certification. 29:40-Randy asks David, “If you could be granted one wish for your outlook on charity, personal development, or limiting beliefs what would it be?” David describes his desire for people to be better stewards with national parks and trails.
