Today on the podcast is the one and only Tommie Runz! "Tommie Runz" was born in New York in August 1984. Growing up, Tommie was raised in Detroit and Southfield, Michigan. In 1993, at the age of 8, he lost his father to a stroke, leaving his mother with the burden of raising him and his sister alone. Tommie's mother made things work and raised them in a loving and hardworking home. However the pain, heartache and trauma of losing his father made way for the inability to comprehend his emotions as a young man. At 17, he took his first drink and found the relief he was searching for in alcohol. The lack of healing in Tommie's life created the perfect recipe for bad decisions, seemingly one after the other. On January 11, 2017 he chose a life of sobriety. This is when Tommie's journey into fitness and health began. His new found sense of freedom, control, and wellbeing ultimately led Tommie to try veganism in February 2018. A few months later, his running journey began when he was challenged to run the Rock-n-Roll Half Marathon in Chicago. To this day, sobriety, veganism and mindfulness play a vital role in who he is as a human and a runner. Since his introduction into running in 2018, Tommie has established and solidified a community of individuals who share the same passion in running, mindfulness, and self-improvement. He created and founded Chip Time Running to disrupt the current status quo in the running industry; began a podcast and live show, The Run Eat Sleep Show; and launched the PR Project on YouTube, where he sits as co-host. In April 2021, he qualified for the Boston Marathon with a chip time of 2:48:43. In today's conversation, Tommie takes me through his incredible story from the start to the present day. We dicuss the different elements of his story and how he's using it to impact lives around the world. I really loved this conversation! Tap into the Tommie Runz Special. In this captivating episode of Shark Theory with host Baylor Barbee, we dive into the invigorating experiences and profound insights derived from his recent participation in the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in Las Vegas. Baylor's narration is not just a recount of the race but a metaphorical journey through strategies for refreshing one's perspective, the significance of obtainable goals, the power of community support, and the importance of self-recognition. Baylor begins by sharing the unique atmosphere and awe-inspiring scenery of running the half marathon along the Vegas Strip—a rare event that captivates participants and spectators alike. This leads to the pivotal realization that a shift in environment can renew our appreciation for routine tasks and inject fresh enthusiasm into our endeavors. This episode is brimming with enriching content, from appreciating the scale of our ambitions to the importance of both receiving and giving support, and how these elements converge to impact our personal and professional lives. The conversation then pivots to reflect on the nuances of goal perception and the influence of public acknowledgement. Baylor observes that widely relatable objectives often garner more support than those which surpass common understanding. He encourages listeners to stay true to their aspirations, regardless of external validation. Woven within the narrative is a powerful reminder that support systems play a critical role in our success, and we should cherish and reciprocate the encouragement we receive. Baylor's reflections culminate in a reaffirmation of self-pride, emphasizing that reaching any finish line, regardless of its relative magnitude, is an achievement worthy of personal pride. Key Takeaways: A change of environment can lead to a renewed appreciation and enjoyment of regular activities or tasks. Goals that can be easily comprehended tend to receive more public recognition, but it's important to pursue personal ambitions regardless of their scale. The support from others is invaluable; showing appreciation for this support and reciprocating it is essential. There's value in all achievements, big or small, and recognizing one's own efforts is as crucial as the act of reaching the finish line. Reflecting on personal experiences can provide broader insights applicable to everyday life and work. Notable Quotes: "Change your environment sometimes and you'll get new perspective on the exact same thing." "Be okay having a vision bigger than what most people see and understand." "We all need each other. We all need support." "Be thankful for the people that do support you." "You have to be proud of the fact that you got to the finish line."
Kelly and Clint are back and report on their Vegas adventure for the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon down the Vegas Strip. They made a few interesting pit stops and created their own aid stations and at the end of the day got the job done. It was a particularly trying day for Clinton.

Hello Runners, How are you? It's already March, and it's entirely possible you may have already run a race this year, or are training for a spring race, or maybe you are a new runner and now seeing results or just running for enjoyment. No matter, I hope you are injury-free and feeling great! So, I've not published an episode in over a month. February was tough, I caught a bad case of the flu, or maybe it was Covid. I was also signed up to run thehttps://www.runrocknroll.com/las-vegas ( Vegas Rock n' Roll Half-Marathon )which I had to bail. Frustrating to say the least. I'm fully vaccinated have my booster shot and still had Omicron right after Christmas last year, but the symptoms were very mild. Anyway, I feel bad I've not released an episode this long. Cindy is as self-made a person as anyone I have ever met. After graduating high school and not having any particular skills that were as yet discovered nor the grades or money to get into University, she joined the United States Navy as an enlisted person. Perhaps she knew, and it’s just as likely she did not, that this single decision to join the Navy set her on a professional trajectory that is nothing short of amazing. Once in the Navy, her MOS was that of a cryptologic technician maintenance servicing communication equipment. As her initial planned time in the Navy was nearing the end, instead of leaving, she decided to remain and earn her Bachelor’s Degree (soon-after becoming an officer) and then her Master’s Degrees – eventually retiring from the Navy. She earned her Doctorate degree after leaving the Navy when she was 46. Her doctoral study, Knowledge Management and Innovation on Firm Performance of United States Ship Repair, provided her the opportunity to gain additional professional and academic expertise to facilitate improvements in organizational knowledge management. She had a daughter while stationed in Georgia which added yet another level of complexity; working hard to balance her professional career in the Navy with her studies and the new responsibilities of being a mother. Her driving force – wanting to never fail at any of it and making sure her daughter was provided for and brought-up in a stable environment. If all this was not enough, Cindy has found time to become a certified Project Management Professional, a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, and as an ASQ-Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence – and has been a contributing author to several books including; Chapter 3: Using Leadership to Improve Firm Performance Through Knowledge Management from The Refractive Thinker: Volume XI: Women in Leadership and Chapter 4: Ensuring Prosperous Knowledge Flow from the Silent Generation Through Generation Z in a Global Workforce from The Refractive Thinker: Volume XVII: Managing a Cultural Workforce: The Impact of Global Employees. I am sure you will find Cindy’s life journey as fascinating and inspirational as I did. The Manchester City Marathon in Manchester New Hampshire bills itself as the largest running event in New Hampshire. The 13th edition of the race was held on Sunday, November 10th, 2019. My youngest sister, Autum Haley, traveled with me to this race. It her first half marathon after having her 4th child last year. This was my 62nd marathon in my 49th state. Only one state to go! Race Recap: The Manchester City Marathon The expo/bib pick up was located at the Millennium Running Store in Bedford, NH the day before the race. They also offered race day pick up the morning of the race at race headquarters in Veterans Park. This was a nice option for those who lived somewhat locally. I got a message the night before from a MTA listener named Kathleen on Instagram that her son had eaten one of the UCAN bars she needed to fuel her first marathon. She was wondering if I had an extra she could get. I’d brought a couple extra for my sister and was happy to give her one so we arranged to meet the next morning. It was fun to be able to meet Kathleen and her sister that morning and get a quick picture. We did a MTA Meet up at Backyard Brewery on Saturday evening and it was fun to meet Allie who lived about an hour away as well as Jane and her running team. Jane is the mother of Noelle, one of my first coaching clients. Noelle has gone on to become a trail running rock star completing three 50 milers, two 12 hour races, and recently ran her first 24 hour race (she ran over 94 miles and was the first place female)!Race Morning: The marathon, half, and relays started at 8:50 am and were broadcast live on TV. The 5k started at 9am and had a different course. The starting area was in front of the SNHU (Southern New Hampshire University) Arena in downtown Manchester and was very close to the hotel we were staying at. It was wonderful to be able to wait in the warm hotel lobby until just a few minutes before the race and not have to stand outside in the cold for an extended period of time. The weather was clear and in the low 30’s at the start and there was a slight breeze which made it feel even more chilly. I decided to wear shorts, compression socks, a short sleeve race shirt, arm sleeves, light knit gloves, my lucky hat, and my On Cloudswift shoes. I was also wearing a long sleeve throw-away shirt (which I got rid of at mile 2).The Course: The marathon and half marathon course were identical for the first 13 miles. At mile 13 the race returned to downtown Manchester where the half marathoners finished and the marathoners ran right by the finish line to start the second half of the course. I found the first half of the race to be quite hilly and challenging. My watch showed a total of 1,273 feet of elevation gain for the whole marathon but I’d estimate that at least 800-900 feet of that was in the first half. Most of the course was around the city of Manchester, through the historic mill yard district, and into the suburbs. There are several sections where the course runs along and over the Merrimack River. The course did start to flatten out around mile 16 and at 16.5 we started an out and back section that went to mile 20.5 on the Piscataquog Trail. It was a dirt/gravel surface and there were some roots, rocks, and mud/ice puddles that had to be navigated around. Then the course proceeded to the Goffstown Rail Trail. This is a very scenic portion of the route as it follows the Piscataquog River back to Manchester. At mile 22 the run crosses the new “Trestle” bridge and continues back to the city, crossing the footbridge over the Merrimack River, and running the final miles in downtown Manchester. The final mile goes by the finish area again, turns off Elm street to cross the bridge, and then returns back to Elm Street to the finish. I found that final mile to be challenging because we were teased with the finish and then had a final overpass hill to run up which felt enormous at that point.Aid Stations/Fueling: Official race aid stations were located approximately every two miles and were well supported. Each one had water and sports drink and a few offered other fueling options. There were also a surprising number of unofficial aid stations like a lemonade stand, someone handing out small water bottles, a mimosa stop, a beer stop, and people handing out candy. I stuck with my fueling strategy of using Generation UCAN bars washed down with water from the aid stations. Use the code MTAMANCHESTER to save 15% on your order. For first time customers use the code MTA25.Finish Line: There were a good number of spectators along the final stretch and they had an announcer calling each runner’s name who crossed the finish line. The total number of marathon finishers was 360. There were 562 who finished the half marathon and also quite a few relay teams. There were 270 finishers for the 5k. The medal was huge and featured stained glass elements behind buildings in Manchester. They also did race tracking and offered free race pictures and a finish line video. The shirt was a very nice long sleeve technical shirt. My Experience: I ran with a guy named Carlos for a few miles which helped pass the time. He’s also pursuing his 50 states and working up to a BQ. I ran by feel during the race and only looked at my watch at each mile split. I felt a bit tired just going into the marathon but wanted to run as strong as possible while listening to my body. The uphills and downhills in the first half were challenging and by mile 18 my lower body felt done. It was one of those feelings that I’ve had during marathons in the past when you feel like walking, but walking doesn’t actually feel any better. Since I knew this I tried to keep my stride and gait consistent and run relaxed in spite of my fatigue. My glutes and hamstrings were particularly sore but thankfully my feet felt good. I finished my 62nd marathon (and state #49) in 3:43:01 and was 2nd in my age group. I got a mug and reusable drawstring bag for the AG placing. Autum was at the finish line to meet me and get some pictures. It was great to see her and find out that she had a good half marathon, finishing in 2:19. They had a nice food area with yogurt, soup, flatbread pizza, chocolate milk, and coffee. The heat sheet felt good because the temps were still cool. We headed out later to find a post-race meal and just happened to see Kathleen, the lady who needed the UCAN bar, finish strong. Here’s what she wrote in later: Hi Angie, Thank you so much for meeting me this morning with the UCAN bar. Here is the photo of us. What a highlight for me to get to meet you. Congratulations on a great run today! You inspire your listeners so much. I finished today, my first marathon, in 5:33:17. The miles seemed to fly by and I had a fun experience. Thanks for your great training plan that got me there. Sincerely, -Kathleen I also heard back from Jane from the MTA meet up Hi Angie, What a pleasure to meet you – and your sister Autumn. Kudos to Autumn for traveling, running and being a mom and wife! Pretty amazing! We enjoyed our dinner with you, and the race the next day. We did well on Sunday: Kelsey & Laxmi competed the 5K – Laxmi’s 2nd race ever! Jen, Suzanne, Emily and I did the half marathon. I’m pretty sure it was Emily’s 2nd fastest half. Sara did her 1st marathon at the 2017 Hartford Marathon in 5:10:01. Last week in Manchester, using the MTA training plan, she finished in 4:35:50 !!!! So great!! I am on a quest to be a 50 stater for half marathons. I have 17 completed. Manchester was a repeat state for me – but my 32nd half! I hope that you and Trevor have continued success with MTA. I have certainly enjoyed listening, using your training plans, doing the virtual half and especially wearing my Release the Kraken hat!! Thanks again. -Jane Also Mentioned in This Episode MTA Meet Up at the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. Trevor will be running the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon on December 8th. He’s also the founding editor of Trail Runner Magazine. His new book is called Kicksology -the Hype, Science, Culture, and Cool of Running Shoes, published by VeloPress. He lives and trains in Colorado. In this conversation we discuss the evolution of running shoes from the over-built (heavy) sneakers of the late 80’s and 90’s to the Minimalism Movement that swept through 10 years ago giving rise to shoes like Vibrams and Newtons to the carbon plate technology of Nike Vaporfly and Next% hitting the shelves today. Plus brands like Hoka, Altra, and On-Running that stand out from the competition with their unique design concepts. You will also hear some tips on how to choose the right shoe for you and why it is wise to have a “quiver” of shoes to rotate during training. Big thanks to all the Academy members who sent in questions! And Thanks to Our Episode Sponsors . . . Once they come back, time seems to accelerate. I get up to the hot corner to take pictures of the pros coming riding into T2 and then running up Palani and down the Kuikini Hwy. The female pros roll in within 20-30 minutes of the first males. Shortly after the first females head into T2 the lead males are coming back from Ali'I Dr and out onto the Queen K. By the time the female pros are down Ali'I, the men are heading into the energy lab. By the time the women are coming back from Ali'I, the men are coming out of the energy lab. By that time, if you want a good spot on the media platform, you better get over there. It doesn't take long before you hear and see the helicopter following Jan Frodeno. I wanted to interview Heather Jackson and did not catch her there, but I did get off a question at the pro conference. What we are going to do now is take you to a series of 3 finish line interviews and then go right into the men's pro conference and the women's conference. When we come back, we'll talk about the rest of the evening. The rest of the afternoon was spent tracking our Colorado age-group athletes and celebrating with them at the finish line and getting there pictures. We did the final post of the evening around 1am. The next day we split up. I went to scout out University of Hawaii Hilo for my daughter while Bill and Khem went to the Coeur Sports brunch and then worked processing pictures and what not until we left for dinner and the airport. Our return home was eventful. On Sunday evening we had a mechanical issue at the end of the runway and had to go back to the gate. By 10, they kicked everyone off the plane and announced that they were going to get the part we need from Oahu. The part arrived around 1am, but did not work. At 2:30 they cancelled the flight and then we got in a line to get reticketed and pick up our vouchers and luggage. We got a rental car and drove to the Fairmount, which turned out to be awesome. Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei Breaks Marathon World Record - A record that seemed untouchable for years fell in 2:14:04. The run whacked 81 seconds off the previous women’s mark. “I kept saying, ‘Tomorrow is my day,’” she said. “I wanted to be the second Kipchoge — the Kipchoge for women. I focused on that.” Kosgei even made a last-minute decision to switch her shoes to match the ones Kipchoge ran in, the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT%. She had planned on wearing an earlier version of the Nike Vaporfly shoe. Kosgei, who also won in Chicago last year, ran 2:14:04 on Sunday. Radcliffe ran 2:15:25 at the 2003 London Marathon, and the record had long seemed untouchable. For years, she was the only woman to have run a marathon in under 2 hours 17 minutes. Not only did Kosgei run under 2:15, she was close to breaking 2:14. And at age 25, she could have a long career in front of her. . Read more. What does it take to be an elite athlete? How can you set records in multiple disciplines of running? In today's episode Deena Kastor shares the story of her running career and how it changed her thinking, leading her to victory. Deena holds the American record for the marathon and half marathon distances. She also won bronze in the 2004 Athens Olympics. In the episode we talk about running, family, the power of team, overcoming disappointment, finding identity, and flow.'Many people describe flow as effortless. But a race was always an effort. Flow, to me, was the absence of resistance, when you push into a pace and find nothing in the way of your pursuit. It's movement in its most freeing form.' - Deena KastorLinksBook: Let Your Mind Run: A memoir of thinking my way to victory by Deena Kastor and Michelle HamiltonWebsite: https://deenakastor.com/Recommended ReadingArt of LearningThe Happiness AdvantageBig PotentialAbout Deena KastorWith a record-breaking running resume that elevates and evolves at the same speed as her insatiable pursuit of excellence, Deena Kastor is one of the world’s most extraordinary female athletes. Deena’s career is earmarked by her groundbreaking 2004 Olympic Bronze Medal in the marathon in Athens, Greece, which shattered a 20-year medal draught for U.S. women in the event. Yet, the accomplishments of the 3-time Olympian certainly don’t stop there. Deena is currently the American Record Holder in the marathon (2:19:36) and half marathon (1:07:34) yet has held American records in a distances from 5K to the marathon. She has made 19 U.S. Teams, won 18 U.S. titles and earned two Silver Medals at the World Cross-Country Championships. She is also an 8-Time NCAA All-American. Deena’s win at the 2005 Chicago Marathon was highlighted in the inspiring documentary, Spirit of the Marathon. Deena followed that momentum to win the 2006 London marathon which ranked her #1 in the world that year. In 2014 Deena set 5 world masters records in one race during the Philadelphia Rock ‘n’ Roll Half-Marathon. Deena believes in a balance of life and strives to always be grateful and give back to her community. She is the president of the ASICS Mammoth Track Club, a local running club with recreational members as well as professionals seeking Olympic berths. She is a motivational speaker for corporations, clubs and races. She is currently the Executive Producer of BOSTON, the marathon documentary, because she knows it will inspire runners and also attract people to the sport she loves. Deena has called the town of Mammoth Lakes, CA home for the last 14 years where the altitude of 8,050 feet and simple mountain lifestyle have enhanced her running and allowed all aspects of her life to thrive. When not training with her Asics Mammoth Track Club Teammates, Deena enjoys spending quality time with her family (husband Andrew, daughter Piper and French Mastiff Zita), painting with girlfriends and cooking gourmet dinners for guests at her home. Deena has a reputation for bringing her very best self to the starting line while simultaneously inspiring excellence in everyone around her.
Victim to victory. In 2005, Sam Gardner was in college and training for a half marathon. During a run while home for Thanksgiving the unthinkable happened. Sam was abducted, attacked, and raped. She was held in the woods near her home for several hours until her attacker eventually let her go. However, her story is one of hope and triumph. After years of physical, mental, and emotional recovery, Sam has transitioned from victim to victor. The moment that best represents that growth was when she won the 2015 Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon in New Orleans. It was an athletic accomplishment but, even more so, a spiritual achievement. When we are positive, we master our physical potential. The power of our own thinking can open doors and elevate our performances. With optimism I have been able to pursue every goal, win medals, earn American and world records, but more importantly, I've been able to be resilient in the face of injury and falling short. Optimists are dreamers, believers and solution seekers. I believe that these lessons are universal and not running exclusive. In reality, we have to make time and shuffle our schedules to accommodate all of our responsibilities: Kids and family Work and professional obligations Social events Sleep? Maybe? It's no easy feat to train well, work, have a family, and find some free time to read or have fun. I remember back to one of the most challenging times of my life: the year after college when I had a 75-minute commute and a 9-hour work day. That meant I was running 80-85 miles per week at 5:30am in the dark, in the freezing winter of Massachusetts. I had no time to do anything besides work, run, and ensure I slept 8 hours a night. Now that I have a family, that's not a possibility. Hard decisions have to be made... To help with those tough decisions, I want to introduce you to Keira D'Amato. She was a 4-time All-American at American University in Washington, DC, specializing in events ranging from the 5k to cross country. After college, she worked for years as the marketing director for Potomac River Running and today she's the "running realtor" for the northern Virginia and DC areas. But she never quit running. Just last month, she won the Rock n Roll Half Marathon in Washington, DC. Keira is running after the Olympic Trials marathon standard of 2:45 - and she's close with her 2:47 PR! Oh, and she's married with two kids... In this conversation, we discuss: the many roles she's had in the running industry what she's learned about runners from being so involved in the sport her marathon progression from nearly 4 hours to 2:47 (!!) how her current training has gone and her strategy to get the OTQ how she manages to train at an elite level with a job and a family

Lura and Mike completed the Rock N Roll Half Marathon on the Las Vegas Strip, both Kay and Shae ran the Mattapoisett 5k, and John participated in the YMCA Turkey Trot 5 Miler! Wow it's finally taper time in my marathon training and I gotta say I'm pretty excited about it. BUT before I get into my whole taper spiel, I give you the low-down on my last big long run I had last weekend-- the dreaded 20 miler. It was a DOOZY; I ran 7 miles followed by the Rock n Roll half marathon! So, I recap the race (which includes a story about a special fellow I met that day), and then go into why it's important to taper, how I'm tapering, and my advice on how to make the most of your taper. So last week, I interviewed Andrea, a Food Technologist working for Lundberg Family Farm, and today, I’m interviewing someone from there too - her boss, a Product Developer and Research Chef at Lundberg! What are the odds? And the meeting between her and I was a completely different scenario as well. It started when I joined Podcaster’s Paradise to jumpstart my Podcasting experience and I saw a poster who looked familiar. I might have seen her on Linkedin actually. I clicked and she worked for Lundberg. I asked Andrea about her and what do you know, it’s her boss. Yes, Kimberly King Schuab was in the same podcast course as I was, and we connected instantly. We realized we had a lot in common so we agreed to collaborate and interview each other. Her episode can be found in the show notes. About Kimberly Schaub Kimberly Schaub is a nutritionist, turned chef, turned product developer, working for Lundberg Family Farms in Richvale, CA. A former Air Force officer, Kimberly has explored a multitude of ways to use her nutritional science training, from running dining facilities to teaching college classes and even food writing. When she's not in the test kitchen or running a sensory panel, Kimberly hosts the PeasOnMoss and The Culinologist Podcasts, volunteers for the Research Chef Association and Institute of Food Technologists, trains for the Rock n Roll Half Marathon, and rock climbs in picturesque Northern California. Learn how to achieve incredible success through mindfulness, focus, perseverance and joy! Discover how following your heart, and loving your family lead to world record performance! | Inspiration | Motivation | Spirituality | Mindfulness | Self-Help | Career | Business | Tony Robbins Today we have a very special treat. An interview recently recorded for our mindful running program with Deena Kastor, Olympic bronze medalist, masters world record holder in the marathon, and US womens record holder for the marathon. If you want to know what it takes to be a champion and to find success, both at your career, your family, and in all that you do, than do we have a show for you! Deena Kastor Discusses Mindfulness, Focus, Balance – and Family, and how to succeed at it all! The following article was written, based on this podcast and interview! At 5'4" and only 104 pounds, no one knew quite what to expect as 41-year-old Deena Kastor lined up for the 2014 Philadelphia Rock 'N' Roll Half-Marathon. An Olympic bronze medalist and American record holder for the marathon, she'd recently set two American master's records on her way to victory at the Dallas Rock 'N' Roll Half Marathon. For this race, her goal was even larger; she was eyeing a world-record. As she lined up, she had nervous butterflies, or what she calls "excitement," a feeling she describes as being completely prepared and ready to get to the task at hand. Years earlier, feeling supremely prepared for the biggest race of her life, her body broke. Only three miles in at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, a stress fracture took her out of her race. But that was then. For most elite runners, 41 is well past retirement, particularly for a mother with a daughter who's now four. But Deena had had a string of successes in recent years and was showing no sign of slowing down. The gun went off. 1 Deena Kastor Leading a World Class Field in the 2014 Philadelphia Rock 'N' Roll Half-Marathon. Photo Credit PhotoRun.net/Competitor Group ( Inspiration | Visualization | Motivation | Mindfulness | Tony Robbins | Zig Ziglar | Spirituality | Spiritual | Meditation | Success | Career | Business | Relationships | Family | Children | Balance ) Deena did her best to follow her game plan, yet only six miles in, struggled with painful side-stitches, which would return in the last few miles of the race. She says it was touch-and-go, that she thought about giving up, but dug deep and went for it. It was a race for the record books and she did it! In just 13.1 miles, Deena Castor wiped out 4 world master's records, from the 5 km through the half marathon. So how'd she do it, and what can we learn from her? Deena has an amazing attitude, a positivity and sense of gratitude about her that spills over into everything she does. She attributes a large part of her success to her mindfulness, a practice she's used to cultivate her positive attitude and what she calls an "attitude of gratitude" over the years. She says it's not something she was born with but had to work at. Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with Deena virtually and ask her about her practice. I wanted to understand how her lessons could benefit others. Her attitude was infectious; it was hard not to laugh and smile as she shared the ups and downs of her journey, and how she's stayed positive through it all. Most importantly, she shared 10 key ways we can all use mindfulness to make our own lives better, whether in the big race, or the even bigger race of life. Live a Quality, Purposeful Life Deena: "Goals aren't just pursued in the moment, but in the choices we make throughout the day." To juggle the competing demands of being a public speaker, high-profile athlete and mother, Deena has to be incredibly mindful of how she chooses to spend her time. She works to "trim the fat" making sure there's nothing in her day that doesn't serve her. She wants her time to be filled with high quality activities, surrounded with the people she loves -- always on purpose. Live with an Attitude of Gratitude Deena: "I am grateful to live the life that I love, and love the life that I'm living." Deena says, "I like to immerse myself in the greatness of the opportunity" being incredibly grateful for everything she does and everywhere she goes. It's something she's cultivated over time, what she calls "being in the moment, and really enjoying the action of whatever I'm doing." 1Deena Kastor Enjoying the Moment. Photo Credit Asics America. Just after college she did a gratitude exercise with her coach's wife which changed her. She was asked to keep a gratitude list, to pick ten things each day to be grateful for, but she could never have duplicates. At first it was easy, but then she really had to start searching for things to put on the list that were different than before. She says searching for joy and gratitude helped her train her mind to ignore or push out the negative. Practice Positivity and Purposefulness Deena: "If it takes the same amount of energy to choose a positive route over a negative route, than why not chose the positive choice?" Deena says she wasn't born innately happy, but that "joy is a practice" and "our choices build up to be our habits." So she consciously chooses not to give negativity any energy. No matter the situation, even after she broke her foot only three miles into the Beijing Marathon, you won't find Deena complaining or berating herself. Instead she'll step back, analyze the situation, and see where she can improve. She's also very careful of her word choices in her head, and has worked hard to train her mind, looking for the opportunities in each moment -- even the darkest ones. See Challenges as Opportunities Deena: "Even in the moment of suffering and negativity, there's going to be a much stronger side of me." She says we should "honor the fact that there'll be challenges, hurdles or obstacles along the way," seeing the obstacles as motivation for change and improvement. And she says when the "poop hits the fan" we get our greatest growth and learning. In Beijing it was learning that there's a huge difference between being fit and being healthy. She used her break as an opportunity to make big life changes and dietary changes to ensure she was healthy with strong bones so it would never happen again. Focus on Your Passion Deena: "My passion is for life, and I chose running to express that!" Deena believes it's her passion that's fueled her success and can fuel ours. "I realized that I was a passionate person taking my passion out on running but I could put that passion into just about anything I chose to do." 1Deena Kastor Running for the Pure Joy of It. Photo Credit Asics America. This realization for her was an ah-ha moment and incredibly liberating. Realizing it's passion that fueled her, took off the pressure and allowed her to run almost better than ever before, because she was no longer attached to it. She could simply run for the pure joy of it, and the record-breaking was simply a result of it! Live with Continuous Improvement Deena: "I don't need to be faster tomorrow than I was today, but I need to be better than I was today." In each day and each moment, she's looking to improve herself. She says we're all capable of making changes in attitude and life through the choices we make on a daily basis. To Deena, running's allowed her to chase a better side in herself, asking, "How can I be a better mom today, a better wife, a better contributor to my community? 1Deena Kastor Running with her Daughter Piper in the Carlsbad 5000. Photo Courtesy Deena Kastor. Her mantra used to be "define myself." She'd ask, "how do I wish to define myself in this moment or how do I want to react to this situation, instead of involuntarily throwing myself into it?" She means we are constantly facing choices. Do this, don't do that? Go here, or don't go there? Train hard, or take off the day? Whatever the question is, no matter large or small, she believes it makes us who we are. Be Excited about Life Deena: "Celebrate the moment, every moment! Deena recommends immersing yourself in the moment, truly celebrating it and finding the pure joy in it. She likes to start sentences with a "sense of thrill or vibrancy" and to throw her hands up in the air in celebration. She says "it may seem silly, but hormones are released." "Now I find myself throwing my hands up going I love this. I love living here. I love my family!" 1Deena Kastor Taking Time with her Family. Photo Credit Holly Andreswww.hollyandres.com. Get Enough Rest To get the most quality out of her days, she wants the most quality out of her sleep. She balances her hard work with what she calls "hard core rest." This is a secret of the pro's, if you want to work hard, you need to rest hard. Deena gets 10 hours of sleep each night, so she can "attack the day again." Turn Nervousness into Excitement Deena: "Naming and titling something differently makes an enormous shift in how you take on that task." Deena gets as nervous before the big race as any of us. But she's reframed it in her mind. So she views nervousness as a sign of her preparation, that's she's done the homework and is raring to go. "I'm so invested and so prepared, interested and excited to get on that line and show what I've been working for. Saying 'excitement' has more empowerment and control. It makes you feel like you're invested and ready." Before each race she writes down three reasons she should succeed at her goal, then commits them to memory. Then when the going gets tough she can recall why she should succeed in that moment. First she did this with races, now with other life events such as giving a large motivational speech. Take Things One Step at a Time Deena: "Running has taught me it takes one step at a time to become a better runner, and a better person in life." Deena works to be present in each moment, and take her goals, large or small, one step at a time. Doing so gives her greater joy and appreciation for each moment of the journey. She doesn't dwell on the end goal, but on the positive emotions she gains from the experience. She doesn't say winning the race is the reward for hard training but that "it's all a reward!" This releases her to immerse herself in the present moment, whether that's out on a trail watching an eagle soar above, or time spent with training partners on long runs where they get deep and personal. And of course, time with her family. For Deena, "there's nothing better than walks with my family." By focusing on the present, Deena's life is rich, passionate, and full of joy. And she believes yours can be too! Deena's mindfulness helps her to stay present and achieve amazing things. But that's almost beside the point. It means she's joyful, at peace, and living her greatest life. Deena: "I truly believe my fastest days are behind me and my best days are ahead!"

But before we get to those topics, check out this video! httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=930g6s-Gi6I So, to summarize just click here on April 26 at 6pm Pacific time! On to this week's listener Q&A...remember that you can click here listen to all the answers in this week's free audio download! Make sure you have the free Quicktime player. Listener James asks: Just wondering about healthy oils - if you cook/heat oils such as olive oil, canola oil, flaxseed oil, does this spoil their healthy attributes? Listener Mindy asks:I read somewhere through your website about combination of foods to get the best digestion. 1. Eating fruit by itself. 2. Eat mostly carb OR protein meals. So my questions are: 1. Your Shape 21 book doesn't seem to follow these guidelines, so what is the best way? 2. I personally am finding it difficult to follow and understand those 7-8 guidelines that you listed and would love for you to talk more about it and give more examples of combinations of food that do work. I've attached an easy-to-understand food combining chart for Mindy... Listener Monica asks: I want to eat healthy, but my husband has a high metabolism and doesn't need to eat healthy. I don't have time to cook two dinners at night. What should I do? Listener Charles asks: For a long time now I have battling an eating disorder, anorexia and over exercise. I have been through a lot of treatment in the past and am currently still meeting with my support team and things are going well. I may not look too underweight, but I am not the weight by doctors would like me to be and body fat is around 3%. My goal is to get up to about 165 lbs- I am currently about 147- and the nutritionists and doctors have set a goal weight for me of about 172 since I am just about 6-feet tall. I was wondering if you had any advice on what type of a program I could do in order to: (a) help me gain healthy weight- NOT fat. (b) maintain the level of conditioning I have now- meaning to not get slower, as well as to build more muscle to improve my bike and swim.My nutritionist and I have developed a good healthy meal plan, but I am afraid if I gain weight, it will just all be fat and hurt my performance, even though I have been told repeatedly that with the way I work out and exercise. once I fuel my body correctly, I will see a lot of improvement. One of Ben's coached triathletes asks:I just wanted to let you know that my bike ride last week was great but I had quite a feeling of hunger about 3 1/2 - 4 hrs into the ride where I felt almost as if I was getting faint. I took in one more goo and that helped a little. There was no bloating which was good but that "empty" feeling made me feel weird. Also, I have been generally really hungry lately and I'm taking my supplements. Thoughts? Do you have a question?
