Gen and Jette dive into the extended canon of some of their favourite series/universes. We crave more from the characters we love but do we really want more of their stories? Show Notes: Why is is that extended canon books never quite live up to the original books you fell in love with? Do you automatically read extended canon even if you know it might disappoint you? Yes… Yes we do. The series that we no longer speak of by the author we do not speak of has a very bad track record with extended canon - The stage play? Really? Yikes. What do you call a book series of 4 books - Quartet? Quadriology? Did y’all know there was a novella in the Twilight series? Jette was wrong - Doctor Sleep the NOVEL does follow the original novel. The film adaptation of Doctor Sleep is a blend of the new novel and the Kubrick film. The story of The Shining and Danny Torrance is so much bigger than the collective consciousness of us all! We LOVE our proper architectural blueprints and laid out timelines Check out our episode on The Rules of Magic. Comic books and superhero stories and grown into almost all extended canon at this point. We talked about this in our Graphic Novels episode too. Jette was right - the Batman films we grew up on were considered a series - Batman Forever is listed as a “stand-alone sequel” to Batman Returns (an obvious sequel to Tim Burton’s Batman). Batman & Robin is considered the 4th film in the Warner Brothers series, despite different Batmans and directors throughout. Looking back, our episode on The Shale Project is about extended canon too. All of the technology and firetruck noises in this episode - sorry! Gen doesn’t have self control when it comes to Maggie Stiefvater Star Wars has become the definition of extended canon. Films and novelizations and animated series Oh My! Authors Mentioned (too many books to list!): Stephenie Meyers (Twilight universe) Suzanne Collins (Hunger Games universe) Phillip Pullman (His Dark Materials universe Maggie Stiefvater (The Raven Cycle and more) Stephen King (All of the books) David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas etc) Alice Hoffman (Practical Magic series) Leigh Bardugo (The Grishaverse and more) VE Schwab (Shades of Magic and more) Ransom Riggs (Miss Peregrine series) Adaptations: BBC His Dark Materials The prequel films to the series that we no longer speak of Castle Rock All 3 Spider-man trilogies - Sorry Tobey and Andrew - Tom for the win All 3 Batman series’ (3rd one coming soon) Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook or email us at hello@anotherbookontheshelf.com. We revisit our interview with the economist Thomas Piketty recorded the week Emmanuel Macron won the French presidency and David and Helen ask what we have learned since. Where does Macron fit on the left/right political spectrum? What has his cult of personality done to French politics? And are we anywhere nearer knowing how to tackle the problem of inequality? The last in our series of updates from the Talking Politics archive.Show Notes:Why isn’t inequality having a more primary effect on our politics? Are ethnic and nationalist divisions trumping class divisions?Piketty’s research shows that nothing is pre-ordained, but it often takes a crisis to reorient politics. In the 20th century, war plays this role. If you take war out of it, what happens? Can democracies deal with inequality without a crisis? Is there a democratic path to redress inequality? Macron relatively quickly became a politician of the centre-right.This shouldn’t have been a surprise. What was harder to anticipate was the nature of the opposition, in particular, the Gilets Jaunes.Macron has become more preoccupied with the geopolitical than reforming the Eurozone. It’s easy to forget how contingent Macron’s rise was.Macron’s rise blew apart the French party system. The failings predated Macron, but he did inject something much more personalized into French politics.Macron created a movement that could win a majority in the French legislature. During lockdown, however, he lost his absolute majority in the lower house because various people on the left defected. The larger story about economic choices, especially macroeconomic choices, being taken out of the hands of democratic politics took a particular shape in France. Can we see Macron’s rise as an answer to France’s problems in the euro?Has COVID moved Europe any closer to answering questions about what engenders solidarity?Piketty has been an advocate of quite radical institutional reforms towards a more centralised European project.Clearly the crisis has changed notions about common European borrowing. If you have debt, what kind of political solidarity sustains that debt? For there to be meaningful solidarity where debt is concerned, you need to see meaningful taxes. So far, this has not happened.Nor has there been any institutional reform in the last few months. And we're thinking about the kind of change that your business could have have in the world. Okay. And how does your business today reflect the amount of change that you want to be having? Are you on the right page? And do you feel like you're making a massive difference in the world? Or are you like most people and feel like you are so overwhelmed with funnels and technology launches, audience building, and all the things that go into building a business that you don't have, the time that you really want to, to focus on changing the world and really bringing forth the transformation that you want to have, regardless of where you are. [00:00:49] Today's episode is going to talk about. Why why you started your business and hopefully encourage you as you move forward and create a business that changes the world. [00:01:02] [00:01:02] Well, Hey friend. So this podcast is a little different than most of the ones I do in that I am out on a walk outside right now. And I decided to, just to hit record, because I have been trying to plan out this podcast episode all day long, and I keep procrast to working on all sorts of things that need to be done, like an email opt in which, by the way you want to get email updates about this podcast, you can go to bright entrepreneur podcast.com/email and sign up. [00:02:06] And I will drop a nice little note in your email, but once or twice a week, when there's new episodes, That's a side note. Anyways, I just was really struggling because in this episode, like what's been really on my heart is like wanting to share my heart and I liked it. Come in with clear notes and be super succinct and have everything all laid out in front of me and speak to you from an outline because I'm kind of a wordy person sometimes. [00:02:40] But I just was struggling and I think to write the outline and I think it's just easiest when speaking from the heart to just let myself speak. So that's what I'm doing here. You'll hear all sorts of sounds from the outside, from the highway, from the birds, from the woods, maybe even some water dripping down off the leaves because it was raining. [00:03:05] But I came out to clear my head and thought I would just talk to you on my little walk, as I clear my head and share my heart with you. So I just got off a call, I don't know, a half an hour ago with my friend Richard, Richard Ralston. Hey Richard. I know you're listening cause you're like my biggest fan. [00:03:22] And, um, if you guys don't know who he is, go check his website out. Richard ralston.com. He does accountability, pods or progress pods. He's amazing. Anyways, that's a side note, total plug just from a friend, but we had this really fantastic conversation. And one of the things that I really loved about our conversation that kind of stuck with me was, um, and it was just a tiny part, just a simple little tiny part was this whole no idea behind why we do what we do and what I really have been wanting to speak to is. [00:04:03] Like to the people and maybe this is you, maybe it's not, but to entrepreneurs, to friends, to you, anybody okay. Who just feels so stuck in their to do list and who feels so overwhelmed and in the weeds with all of these things to do, and just really struggling to keep making a profit and keep making bigger numbers and not struggling as in, you're not doing it, but just like. [00:04:30] Overwhelmed. You've got all this stuff in front of you to do, and you've lost sight of why you started your business in the first place. And. What kind of impact you wanted to have? I have on the world as people encountered your offer and got the transformation that your product brings them. Oh man, I wish you could smell it right now. [00:04:55] Smells like heaven. Cause it rained. I just walked on this mossy road. Anyway side note. This is why I have an outline my friend, because otherwise I go on tangents like this and I notice every little detail in nature anyways. Um, there's so many people who've lost sight. Of what they started their business for. [00:05:16] And maybe this is you. I mean, maybe you had big dreams and you wanted to make this massive impact in the world, but you've gotten so sucked in two funnels and technology and content creation and social media and all of the things. Yeah. And it just feels like day in and day out. You're constantly battling a, to do list that never ends focusing on making a profit and not spending as much time on the things you love working with your clients or your customers, and really bringing that impact into the world in a way that you know, that you can and. [00:05:57] It just breaks my heart to know I've been there. I mean, I have been there. I have been so overwhelmed with all the things and it's so, so easy to feel like you just can't do anymore. And you can't add anything more to your life because it's overwhelming and then there's money stress on top of it possibly or not. [00:06:19] And it's just, it's so hard and it's not what you thought it was. And you may even have had a good level of success. Like you may have a six figure business or multi six figure business and still be feeling like you're constantly on the go, that you can't step away. That you're still at this point, even focused on, you know, all the, to do's all the things that have to happen to keep the business running. [00:06:47] And part of this conversation I had with Richard. Was going back to the why. And he was giving me some feedback on the bright future method, a workshop, which he was part of the beta course for that. And we started with this idea of the why and what your origin story is. And, um, he just, he just mentioned that he's like, I don't know how that connected to all the rest of that. [00:07:13] And so I explained, I said, well, it really connects to everything because if we don't know our, why. If we don't remember that deeper purpose that we, I had in mind when we started our business, if we can't clearly explain the change that happens, that transformation that happens. To our people individually when they work with us, but also say if a hundred million people had that same transformation, how that would change the world and the culture and your industry, right? [00:07:52] How would that make a massive change? And if we can't define those things, and if we can't verbalize those things, and if we don't think about those things, Then we tend to get sucked into the, to do's and we tend to feel overwhelmed and we forget why we're doing it. We may even give up on why we're doing it because it's just so much work. [00:08:14] And it's so draining because we aren't getting filled by the thing that means the most to us. And so. Um, it was just helpful for him to say that to me, because then I helps me remember, as I'm teaching the workshop again, which I'm going to be doing on September 28th. I want to make sure that that message gets out there. [00:08:36] That I explained more clearly that this is why we start there, but the whole purpose of that bright future method is to help transform people and their businesses from being so profit focused, which by the way, profit is a great thing. The more money we make more impact we can have Stu says that all the time, stick McLaren. [00:08:55] And I fully agree with that fully aligned with that. But. Not, I don't want you to be so focused on making a profit that you forget about the impact and the transformation that you can actually have. And what most people don't realize is that what got you to where you are today, like doing it yourself and being resourceful and learning how to do all the things and implementing them and figuring out the funnels and. [00:09:24] All of those things that are so important, like you needed to learn them, you needed to go through them, but you cannot continue doing them. By yourself into the future forever. Now, my course is not about building a team. That's one way you can start scaling and moving on and really growing both your profit and your impact. [00:09:45] Um, my bright future method workshop is about how do you become the person you need to be in order to work more intentionally? Um, with more purpose and basically gently guide you from where you are now and the things you're doing now and refocus and reshift your energy into creating a business that has that impact that you were dreaming of when you first started your business, that has the ability to help you make a massive impact in the world without you having to do it all by yourself. [00:10:23] And you can do this. Like I said, by growing a team, there are courses that go into that. James Wedmore does business by design. He teaches all of that stuff beautifully. I instead tend to focus more on how do you simplify everything you're doing in your business? How do you simplify the strategy? To get you there more easily, so you can clean up what you're doing and focus on the things that actually get results that actually make an impact on people and realign yourself and your actions and your business with your deeper purpose and that bigger impact so that you can take more focused action. [00:11:05] Um, this week is a great example today. Today's Friday. Um, this will come, go live and like today, but I, I took Monday and Thursday completely off as well as the weekend. I only worked three days this week. My team is very minimal right now. It's basically me, a customer service person and a, um, a content repurposer that I work with for projects. [00:11:32] So not even regularly, she works with me like once a month for a couple of things. So it's super basic. And yet, because I know exactly what I need to do because I know the messaging I want to bring into the world because I know what works and what doesn't and how to make sure that I'm designing my business. [00:11:51] So intentionally that it's going to have that purpose. I don't, I don't need to be doing everything. I don't need, need a huge team to accomplish big things. Yes. I'm absolutely going to hire more people as this new business grows. Undoubtedly, but before yeah, you get to that point, it's better to become more efficient and more purposeful and really realign yourself with the reason you started your business with the results that you really want to get, not just money, but also impact. [00:12:22] And you can have both. I absolutely believe that as you go deeper and deeper into. The reason you started your business and the big, deeper purpose that drives you. And as you consciously make that decision to use your business and leverage what you've created to build a movement around it and invite other people into that deeper purpose with you. [00:12:46] You will grow your profits. You're going to grow your profits and your impact. And, Oh man, I wish you could just see it right now. It's beautiful. Like I'm walking down, it's an old road. The bridge is out. So it's, it's like a diff it's an old highway. That's overgrown now, but it's like filled with Moss on the road and these trees on each side and it's just magical. [00:13:04] I'm such a sucker for Moss, but anyways, um, I know that you can do this. I know that by realigning your purpose, you can get there. So I do teach us in my bright future method workshop. I'm going to do some sort of launch. I haven't even planned that out yet. Starting on September 21st. And we're going to run the workshop live again for eight weeks, starting on the September 28th. [00:13:30] So you know that that's coming up. Um, but not, you can't join it now. So. More than anything. I just wanted to speak to you from the heart and start getting you thinking about why did you start your business? What is it that really drives you? What is that deeper purpose behind everything? If you want help creating that plan, I can help you in a coaching day. [00:13:54] I've got about four left between now and when I launch. And so if you'd like one of those four spots, you can check out the show notes and contact me and we can set that up. That's the fast track way to getting something super customized for you. You'll have your whole plan and entire day. Um, otherwise you can also start thinking about being a part of my future method workshop, and you can sign up for that soon. [00:14:22] I don't even have the wait list done yet. So right now, if you're interested in that, I would recommend signing up for my email updates for the podcast, which you can sign up for at bright entrepreneurs, podcast.com. Slash email super easy. And I will put the link for that in the show notes as well. But regardless, even though both of those things can help you. [00:14:46] Um, I just, I just want to give you a hug, give you a virtual hug as I'm walking down this road and back and forth and talking to you in the woods. And I just want you to know that what you're doing is amazing and what you've done is amazing. But it doesn't always have to be overwhelming. It doesn't always have to be 80 hour plus weeks. [00:15:11] I legitimately talk to somebody just last night. Who's like, I counted up all my hours. I'm legitimately spending 80 hours a week working like that made my heart so sad for her. Because there's no reason you should have to do that. And I know you love your work. We all love our work. We wouldn't be doing this. [00:15:29] We wouldn't be running our businesses if we didn't love it, but you can do this in a way that's sustainable, that has a greater impact. And that allows you, the freedom that you can get as an entrepreneur who has full control of your schedule, full freedom. To do it in a way that doesn't just rely on you and you can build a movement of customers around this deeper purpose who want to help you with this. [00:16:00] When you're clear on your deeper purpose, they can get excited about your deeper purpose too, and start calling other people into it with you as well. And that's what I've done really. Really well, I want to help you build a movement of people, of crazy loyal customers around your business who can help. [00:16:19] Make a deeper impact in the world. So, all right. I'm almost back home. Okay. So I hope you enjoyed this podcast. I normally would read a review for you, but I'm on my phone. Just walking outside. I don't want to have, I don't have one in front of me, but maybe in the next. Podcast episode, I will read your review if you haven't left one yet, please do that. [00:16:42] That would be a great way to say thank you. But also wanting to let you know that I did finally get an optin set up. So now you can get reminders via email of when this podcast goes live. I send them once or twice a week. I should send them every time I podcast, you know, every Wednesday and Sunday. But sometimes they only get one out a week, but either way you can get a email. [00:17:05] If you'd like to, that'll give you reminders about the podcast and it'll give you information about the upcoming bright future method workshop. Um, and anything else it's not, I mean, I mentioned the stuff that I sell in there, but it's not just one big, massive sales pitch. So, uh, just. Full disclosure. Um, so that is in the show notes. [00:17:23] It's also bright entrepreneur podcast.com/email. And if you are really one of my insiders and you want to know what's going on and get a little bit more behind the scenes, I started a telegram channel. Telegram is a free app that you download to your phone or your desktop. It works on both and it's. [00:17:43] Kind of like a messenger channel, except for, I don't have to deal with all of Facebook's funky rules and I am going to be, um, dropping the behind the scenes updates. Actually, I'm going to go take a picture of the road with all the Moss and the trees that I was talking about. I'm going to place that in our telegram channel and you can join that and get. [00:18:05] Behind the scenes looks. I love that. I love that. I've been wanting to show photos once in a while, and that would be a great way to do it. So I'm going to drop that photo in the telegram channel. And I'll also tell you when you know, episodes are coming and whatever else it's going to be like my little way of. [00:18:21] Chatting with you more casually fan of connecting with people through apps like telegram. The answer to both is yes in most cases, and that’s what today’s show is all about. Recently, some states have started to implement changes that affect your ability to wholesale any type of property. It’s important to know your state’s laws. Show Notes Why you might not be able to wholesale in every state, and what to do about that. How do closing costs affect an investor’s ability to do a double close? Who should you ask for advice on these matters? Do you need to have your contracts reviewed periodically? .

Education is very hard to disrupt. That’s both good and bad. Education is so important to both individuals and society, it should not be changed on a whim, but over time it seems that our institutions of higher education have drifted away from meeting students real needs. Yoshito Hori, founder and CEO of Globis, is making radical changes. He turned a small training school into Japan's first independent and fully accredited business school with an MBA. Less than ten years later, Globis became Japan’s most popular MBA program. We talk about the need for change in education and about the successful, real-world pilot program Globis is running to modernize Japanese higher education. Yoshito also shares insights on how to teach innovative thinking and explains why such a high percentage of Globis MBAs go on to found starts or join them. It's a fascinating discussion and I think you'll really enjoy it. Show Notes Why most Japanese do not want to attend full-time MBA programs How to make an advanced degree both exclusive and inexpensive How to groom MBA students to start startups How Sumitomo missed out on a multi-billion dollar business Why Japanese higher education is so resistant to change This difference between SPOCs and MOOCs, and why it's important How drinking in front of your computer might save higher education Links from the Founder Check out Globis Yoshito's blog on entrepreneurship in Japan Follow Yoshito on Twitter@YoshiHoriGLOBIS Connect with him on LinkedIn Yoshito's article on 100 Actions to revive Japan The G1 Global Conference [shareaholic app="share_buttons" id="7994466"] Leave a comment Transcript Disrupting Japan. Straight talk from Japan’s most successful entrepreneurs. I’m Tim Romero, and thanks for joining me. I’ve got another great select show for you today. I really like this particular episode because it highlights that disruptive innovation does not have to be about the technology, If fact, even when disruption seems to be about technology, it’s really not. It’s about changing systems, changing the way people and businesses interact with each other. Of course, that often does involve technology, but when it does, the technology is only the conduit. Nowhere is that more clear than in my conversation with Yoshito Hori, the CEO, and founder of Globis. In fact, I would say that at least so far, Globis has brought far more genuine change to Japan’s education market than all Japan's edTech startups combined. So please enjoy the episode and I’ve got some important updates to our story for you after the show. ----- You know, education is hard to disrupt. And as long-time fans know very well, that’s both a good thing and a bad thing. It’s good because education is so important and foundational not only to how well a given child will do later in life but also because in the large developed nations, the educational system forms the basis of society itself. It provides us all with a shared set of experiences. So the fact that we don’t change the rules every few years is a good thing. On the other hand, this lack of disruption leads to educational systems that don’t really meet the needs of today’s students and today’s societies for that matter. So clearly, there must be a better way of doing things than what we’re doing now. Well, today, I’d like to introduce you to someone who’s found a better way. Yoshito Hori founded Globis as a small business training school and grew it into Japan’s first independent and fully accredited business school offering MBAs. And then, Globis became Japan’s most popular MBA program. Yoshito’s strategy for innovation is fascinating. Unlike similar schools in the US, Globis does not compete on cost. In fact, the Globis MBA is more expensive than similar degree programs at Todai or Hitotsubashi. No. Globis is doing something unique and something that is making a lot of people rethink how un...
In this episode, we unpack what CPA means in the world of affiliate marketing and why affiliate partnerships typically result in one of the lowest CPA marketing options for brands. Show Notes: Why the cost per action compensation model is a key differentiator in affiliate marketing. Why affiliate programs tends to be a natural next step for younger brands that have been primarily leveraging paid social and paid search marketing to acquire clients and build brand recognition. What larger, more establish brands tend to want from their cost per action compensation structures. How CPA plays into how larger brands are testing campaigns and strategies with new partnerships as well as optimizing their existing partnerships. How a brand’s affiliate team worked with their public relations team to align their influencer marketing campaigns within the affiliate model and pay those influencers on a cost per action basis. What makes it possible for brands to know when a compensation-worthy action has been taken and refine that to optimize their partnerships. Ohhh man we have a special one today, everyone. I didn’t want to release this as a podcast but hey, why not? I had some of the superheroes of meat eating in one film studio, so I had to take advantage of this opportunity to let everyone hear the audio version. You’ll see this on the big screen - in Food Lies and maybe even other places someday. We shot it in our production studio which belongs to my Sapien.org business partner who is producing Food Lies with me. To set the scene a bit, it’s a large warehouse and we were sitting in the middle on director chairs with 3 cameras filming. We hit 7 main topics based around meat. We started off high level for a general audience to ease in - why should meat be included as a part of a healthy diet? We went all the way into details of a carnivore diet and should it be nose to tail or just steak and eggs? We also talked about how much plant food we should include in our diet. I always include some - and Mark Sisson used to recommend including a lot - seems like things are changing though... So I definitely agree with the nose to tail meat-eating approach - so much so that I named my grass finished meat company after it. We have grass finished beef, buffalo, and lamb, as well as pasture raised pork and chicken. Our pork and chicken has been tested in an independent lab and has one of the best omega 6 to omega 3 ratios around. It’s around 1.5 to 1 which is amazing! Most conventionally raised pork is 20:1 and conventionally raised chicken about 24:1. You can see the results on NoseToTail.org and also place an order. It’s shipped out to all 48 contiguous US states each week on Monday and Tuesday. We also have ground beef, buffalo, and pork with organ meats mixed in. You get liver, heart, kidney, and spleen all grass finished and all mixed in so you barely taste it. If you can’t support me in this way, you can join the Patreon and get the extended show notes for the podcast each week at http://Pateron.com/peakhuman and get invited to the private slack group while also keeping the show ad-free. We’re in the final days of filming for Food Lies. People keep asking me when it will be released and unfortunately I don’t know. We’ve been editing it for months and keep finding great new experts and stories to add. The world is changing by the day as well and it’s hard to find a cutoff for what content to include in the film. Do we include the news that there’s glyphosate in the Beyond Meat burgers? What about Miki Ben-Dor’s latest study on human evolution and meat eating? Anyway, it’s close to being finished but we still need to do a ton of graphics to illustrate all of these points and make these big concepts easier to understand - so it will take some time. We just got back from an incredible film tour in Calgary, Toronto, and Ottawa. Some awesome farmers and ranchers doing some great things for the land, the animals, and dispelling vegan propaganda. So much of the land on earth just isn't suitable for crops, yet works perfectly for cattle and other ruminant animals. Anti-meat activists are so clueless when it comes to this, it’s a real shame. We’re about to head out for the very last shoots in San Diego July 24th-27th based around the Low Carb USA conference. Some great doctors will be in town that we’ll be getting in the film. Come say hi - I’ll be at the conference a bit. We’ll also have our Meat-Up there on Wednesday July 24th in downtown san diego with Dr. Paul Saladino and ex-vegan turned carnivore Alyse Parker from the last episode. RSVP at http://NoseToTail.org/event Can’t wait to see everyone there! Now here’s the mighty meaty men themselves - Mark Sisson, Dr. Paul Saladino, and Dr. Shawn Baker. Human evolution and brain development relating to meat eating Bioavailable nutrients Where did we go wrong if we’ve been eating meat for all of history? Agriculture “was the worst mistake in human history” Our brain sizes have shrunk since agriculture We can survive on grains, but can we thrive? Fallback foods Are we eating the same meat as we did in the past? What about fruits and vegetables in the past? We’ve been eating meat in the same basic form for 2 million years yet plants are very new Only consistent food we’ve had for history has been animals Mark has always said “make half your plate plants” does he still believe this? You don’t need the amount of calories you may think to still thrive and not be hungry Are the RDAs relevant to those who don’t eat a bunch of carbs, sugar, and processed foods? Our nutrition guidelines are based on a bad diet Diet is turning into religion Much of our nutrition info is based on poorly conducted observational studies There is no nuance in nutrition reporting People eating the most meat in Asia have the longest life Replacing animal products always equates to processed versions that make food companies a lot of money What should the ratio of plant to animal foods be? What is the definition of an ideal diet? We need all the vitamins and minerals in the most bioavailable form with the least amount of toxins America eats 70% plant foods in our diet Peoples health improve as they eat more animals foods in many cases Do people really need a whole bunch of bulky fiberous plants? No benefit of fiber - where did this myth come from? Healthy user bias Vegetarian benefits go away when you control for people who also have healthy behaviors Meat is a status symbol in Asia Should we be eating Nose to Tail, or is it ok to just eat steak and burger patties? Organ meats provide all the necessary vitamins and minerals Our ancestors ate Nose to Tail and even did this as little as 100 years ago, but we find it weird today Animals eat the organs and fat and many times leave the muscle meat Shawn Baker does not believe the organ meats are necessary but agrees they are nutrient dense and are great Mark Sisson wants to live an awesome life and enjoy every bite of food Solve for the highest quality of life at all times People maybe shouldn’t focus on tiny things that make maybe 1% difference We shouldn’t have to use trackers to figure out how to eat and sleep Eating a species appropriate diet should be intuitive I think Nose to Tail eating was natural and intuitive Tastes are cultural What about meat eating and longevity? mTor and igf-1 Muscle mass and long life Carbs signal insulin more than animal protein Healthy diets are more about what you don’t eat Closing statements BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Film site: http://FoodLies.org YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/FoodLies Sapien Movement: http://SapienMovement.com Follow along: http://twitter.com/FoodLiesOrg http://instagram.com/food.lies http://facebook.com/FoodLiesOrg Theme music by https://kylewardmusic.com/

James Richardson has a PhD in anthropology and has worked for the Hartman Group for a little less than 15 years. During that time, he’s done work for a whole variety of different companies. From small companies to legacy brands. With a tone similar to Anthony Bourdain’s view of the restaurant interview, James brings a realistic yet refreshing viewpoint on the food industry and throughout the interview, brings a ton of tangible tips on how to grow, especially if you’re in the beginning stage of starting up. Questions like if your time is valued in trade shows, or what year food companies are typically profitable, or how you can navigate through different selling channels are all topics that we talk about. So get ready for a jam-packed interview on the inner workings of what really goes into growing a food business By the way, James has some awesome stuff in the pipeline. Not only does he have a podcast called Startup Confidential, but he also will be launching the book, Ramping Your Brand, at the end of the year. Enjoy the show! About James I am a strategy consultant for emerging food and beverage brands, with a professional background in consulting, market research and social science. Based on years of Nielsen and SPINS analysis of real world performance, I have developed proprietary IP to guide product design/innovation and go-to-market strategy for early stage natural/organic brands. My work in the natural/organic marketplace is based on understanding category nuances that affect success for emerging brands. All my work involves a holistic, competitive analysis of your brand and its prospects for growth based on understanding category nuances in modern food culture. Past Clients: My understanding of the food and beverage marketplace and growth strategy is built on 15 years of work for leading manufacturers and retailers across the sector: Pepsi-Cola, Coke VEB, McCormick, Campbell's, ConAgra Brands, General Mills, Nestle USA and Nestle SA, Kraft Foods, The T. The promise of renewable energy has always been alluring. Now that the technology has caught up to the promise, record amounts of wind and solar are coming onto the grid both in Japan and throughout the world. But so far startups, especially Japanese startups, have been playing a very limited role in this transformation. But that's starting to change. Today we sit down with Ken Isono, founder and CEO of Shizen Energy, and we talk about what it takes to succeed as an energy startup in Japan, and since Shizen Energy is rapidly expanding globally, what it takes to succeed as a startup in the global energy markets. We talk about which renewables are working in Japan and which are not, what the real bottlenecks are, and more important, how we can fix them. It's a great conversation, and I think you'll enjoy it. Show Notes Why startups struggle in the energy market How solar plants get built in Japan How to find wind projects worth building The importance of going local in a global market Why the Japanese value land rights so highly A deep dive into solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal energy in Japan How Japanese communities are funding local renewable energy Why so many of Japan's startups come from Fukuoka How Japan can transform into a free-energy economy Links from the Founder Everything you wanted to know about Shizen Energy Shizen Energy on Facebook Shizen Energy retail green energy Friend Ken on Facebook Leave a comment Transcript Welcome to Disrupting Japan, straight talk from Japan’s most successful entrepreneurs. I’m Tim Romero and thanks for joining me. It’s surprising at first, for all of the potential disruption in the energy industry, for all of the potential profits that can be made by doing things better and more efficiently in the energy industry, we don’t see that many energy startups, and as it turns out, there are good reasons for this. Generating and storing electricity at scale require skills that can’t be supplanted by new technology and innovation. Furthermore, most energy projects are long-term, low-risk medium return projects that are just not attractive to venture capital. These projects require a different kind of financing. One notable exception, however, is Japan’s Shizen Energy who is bringing a lot of renewable energy onto the grid in Japan and around the world as well, and they’re doing it as a startup. In just a minute, we’ll sit down with Ken Isono, Shizen Energy’s founder and CEO. He’ll explain how his little startup has worked with local governments and fought the incumbents to bring enough renewable energy onto the grid that Shizen Energy is not so little anymore. We’ll talk about that growth, of course, and we also take a deep dive into the current state and the future prospects of the most important renewable energy technologies in Japan. But you know, Ken tells that story much better than I can, so let’s get right to the interview. [pro_ad_display_adzone id="1411" info_text="Sponsored by" font_color="grey" ] Interview Tim: So, I’m sitting here with Ken Isono of Shizen Energy, and thanks for sitting down with me. Ken: Thanks for the chance to speak. Tim: Now, Shizen Energy, you guys are a vertically integrated renewable energy company. You guys do generation, your financing, and the retail side as well. Ken: Yeah. Tim: That’s a lot for a startup to do. Ken: We started with solar but the three co-founders used to work in wind power generation company together for five years. Tim: What made you guys decide to leave that company and start your own project? Ken: So, actually, Shizen Energy, we found this company 2011, June, so three months after Fukushima accident. Before that, there was no demand from the market, from policy in renewables, but we knew that it’s going to change. Tim: At first you were focused on large scale solar projects? Was it just the financing,

A few years ago, shiny new startups were using their marketing dollars to tell the world that chatbots were going to change everything. Those marketing dollars have now been spent and most of those startups are no more. But for the past few years, one company has been quietly making chatbots useful, and they are now starting to make some noise. Today we sit down with Akemi Tsunagawa, founder of Bespoke and creator of the Bebot chatbot. In several important ways, Bespoke is one of the most successful chatbot companies in the world, and you'll be hearing a lot about them in the years to come. Today, however, Akemi explains how she and the team managed to succeed where so many better-funded companies failed, and she gives some great advice about how to get consumers to try out new technologies. We also talk about why you should absolutely never build your business around Facebook or WeChat. It's a great conversation, and I think you'll enjoy it. Show Notes Why most travel websites are doomed to failure Founding a technical startup without technical co-founders How to get people to tell chatbot what they really think Where chatbots excel and where they should not try Things you should never use a chatbot for Why you should not build a chatbot on Facebook or WeChat Why Japanese don't want to use chatbots Bespoke's plans to go global How to speed up decision making inside Japanese companies Links from the Founder Everything you wanted to know about Bespoke Friend Akemi on Facebook Connect with her on LinkedIn Leave a comment Transcript Welcome to Disrupting Japan, straight talk from Japan’s most successful entrepreneurs. I’m Tim Romero and thanks for joining me. I think the peak of the chat bot hype cycle came in 2017. If we cast our minds back into the midst of that distant age, perhaps we can recall that chatbots were going to change the way we work, the way we shop, the way we bank, the way we talk to our customers, and even the way we find love and raise our children. Yeah, that didn’t happen, and startup founders, start of investors, and start of media all moved on to focus on some newer, shinier object – blockchain, probably. But, you know something, sometimes, all that media type and investor attention can actually make it really hard to build something worthwhile. A lot of times, the best ideas and the best use of technology come from trying to solve a simple problem without investors telling you you need to be a unicorn or a journalist demanding to know exactly how you plan on changing the world by the end of the year, and so it is with chat bots. Today, we’re going to sit down with Akemi Tsunagawa, the founder and CEO of Bespoke, the creator of the Bebot chatbot. Now, Akemi will tell you exactly how Bebot works in just a second, but to really appreciate what that important story Bespoke is, you need to understand that outside of marketing and some trivial customer support apps, you’ve got to realize, there is almost no chatbot success stories. Bebot is one of the very few chatbots in the entire world that provides enough genuine utility that people not only willingly interact with it but start to rely on it. Bespoke’s business model does not rely on novelty or cost-cutting, no. Bespoke is solving an actual problem. This is a great example of how the needs of one industry can push technology forward for other sectors, and Akemi and I also talk about why she didn’t even realize they were running a chatbot company at first. She gives some great advice on how to get consumers to try out, not just chatbots but any new technology, and we chat about why you should never – and I mean never -- build your business around Facebook or WeChat. But you know, Akemi tells that story much better than I can, so let’s get right into the interview. [pro_ad_display_adzone id="1411" info_text="Sponsored by" font_color="grey" ] Interview

Listen & Subscribe on iTunes Putting yourself out there and showing the world your real self can be intimidating. As human beings, we crave acceptance from our peers and always want to be seen in the best light. And in a world of where superficiality and always 'looking cool' is the norm, it takes a brave person to share who they truly are with others. And for Mark, it's not just a good idea; it's fundamental to our happiness and peace in the long run. If you truly want to be appreciated and be at peace with yourself for who we truly are, and not for who others want or think us to be, you need to give others a chance at seeing the real you. And with a little practice, being the real you at all times can become the new status quo. In Episode 211, Mark records a solo episode where he presents a compelling case for why we should remove our masks and let others see more of who we truly are, when it’s a good time to be vulnerable, and why social media doesn’t always (if rarely) reflect what’s actually going on. He also shares an exciting new project we're working on with the Are You Being Real Facebook page! We hope you'll join us in highlighting the 'real' you come across. Enjoy!!
