"We work to live. We don't live to work." - Tom Grane When I first began my career in Hollywood the concept of life outside of work was completely foreign to me. I assumed the only way to reach my goals was to sacrifice my health and sanity for the sake of a great résumé, only to discover those early habits become lifelong habits if you’re not careful. Once this mentality sets in and you set this expectation with others it can be practically impossible to reverse. That is why I am actively trying to change the conversation around our “get it done at all costs” work culture and collaborate with employers and business owners who understand the importance of work-life balance. Early in my career I was fortunate enough to experience a work culture where well-being was a priority at what was then a small fledgling trailer & marketing agency. Fast-forward fifteen years and today Mob Scene is one of the top movie marketing companies in the business - largely because of the culture that co-founder and CEO Tom Grane created from the very start. This innovative company has been an integral part of the marketing campaigns for projects like Avatar, Stranger Things, Fast 9, Wonder Woman, Joker, Knives Out, and The Trial of the Chicago 7...and that’s just recently. Historically they have provided marketing and original content for more marketing campaigns than I could list if I had the entire episode to do so. Having a background as a studio executive for 20th Century Fox, Tom admits to having a strong work ethic, and he’s spent his fair share of hours working late and being away from his family. But his motivation when he founded Mob Scene was to create more flexibility with his time and be more available to his family, and he believed in fostering an environment that provides the same flexibility for his team. In our conversation we discuss a variety of topics that can help creatives better understand what it takes to get an opportunity at a company like Mob Scene, that can help producers and business owners better understand the importance of fostering work-life balance with your teams, and that can help all of us better understand how to navigate our constantly changing landscape of content whether we’re working from home, at the office, or adopting a hybrid work environment. In episode 308 of Moxielicious®, I speak with Tom Austin, the co-founder and CEO of Confidently. The Confidently app makes coaching fun, easy, and effective for both individuals and organizations who have the ability to access a variety of science-backed tools to cultivate mental fitness. Tom is also a former co-founder of AND1, a brand that grew famous for its trash-talk T-shirts and was a cultural movement in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. It was so popular that hundreds of athletes tattooed the logo on their bodies, and Netflix has a documentary about this movement coming out in 2021. While I invite most guests onto the podcast, when my partner, Stephen, showed me the pitch Tom’s PR company sent, it was an immediate yes for me. Not only was I super intrigued by the design of the Confidently app, but I could sense Tom would have an awesome story and wise recommendations on a variety of subjects at the intersections of developmental psychology, creativity, storytelling, and entrepreneurship. And as you’ll hear in this episode, my gut was spot on. While unapologetically celebrating his successes, Tom also pulls back the curtains to describe his multiple pivots. He acknowledges that women have a much harder time being multi-passionate and accounting for career interruptions. And throughout our interview, he provides whip-smart recommendations on a variety of subjects, such as: What the Confidently app is, who it’s designed for, and how it’s democratizing who has access to coaching Why Tom repeatedly decided to “begin again” rather than get 10% better at something he already knew or mastered Why “Is it soul satisfying?” and “Am I productive to society?” are great questions for gauging meaningful work and future opportunities How to know when it’s the right time to make a sharp right turn in your career or launch a new venture (Tom is super honest about not leaping until you have secured a net.) The mindset and strategies to activate your network to support you and your endeavors (I absolutely love Tom’s recommendations for how to conduct a strengths audit, sculpt a powerful narrative, and approach the people in your network – as well as the value of “weak ties”.) The Notre Dame Fighting Irish just finished a very successful 2021 recruiting cycle, and Joshua brought our friend Tom Loy onto the show from 247's Irish Illustrated to provide a little insight. In this episode: Some recruiting rankings were hurt by no camps and/or season because of COVID. Ryan Barnes is verified. Devin Aupiu will be missed on the west coast. Talking about a 4th WR that wasn't. Guys that Tom thought were some of the biggest misses (not including Will Shipley). Did the Irish do enough at safety in the 2021 cycle? In this episode of the Millionaire Mindcast, we have an impressive guest, Tom Wheelwright who shares his wisdom, knowledge, insights on why entrepreneurs and investors should be involved with their tax situation, understanding tax law, tax lien, bonus depreciation, tax rates, capital gain trades, PPP Loan forgiveness, and techniques on how to reduce taxes! Tom Wheelwright is an entrepreneur, investor, a CPA and was an accountant buddy of Robert Kiyosaki, an expert and published author on partnerships and corporation tax strategies, and a well-known platform speaker and wealth education innovator. His best-selling book, Tax-Free Wealth helps entrepreneurs and investors how to build massive amounts of wealth through practical and legal strategies for lowering taxes. Tom’s work has been featured in hundreds of media, including Forbes, The Huffington Post, Accounting Today, CFO Magazine, ABC News Radio, and AZTV Morning News, along with writing columns for Entrepreneur Magazine and Inman News. This man always loves law and numbers. According to him, tax is a nice combination of law and numbers. Thus, Tom always makes taxes look sexy. Accordingly, as taxes are on their way up, you need to have a plan to reduce it. Long term tax strategy is a much better solution. How to come up with the solution? Big vision attracts big talent. Hence, work with tax advisor. Having a tax advisor or an accountant is the most important person in your team. On the other hand, in terms of capitalizing, invest something you enjoy, something you care about, and something you spend the time to get good at. The asset category and actual type of investment doesn’t matter. Choose something that’s fun instead of chasing returns, that’s the journey and it’s not about the destination. Currently, Tom is very excited about technology as it applies to business and investing, as well as changes in education. Tom and his team are currently building a massive international network for CPA firms to be able to help more people around the world. Some Questions I Ask: How did you get into this? Has your partner betrayed your trust time and time again to the point where it is becoming an exhausting pattern of behavior? Do you struggle being able to walk away from the relationship due to the time and level of commitment you both have put in? Whether it’s time to end the relationship altogether or to take big steps towards fixing the underlying problems, something has to change for the pattern to be broken. On this episode of Relationship Theory, Tom and Lisa Bilyeu sit down to discuss such matters and more as they explore what to do when your partner has a pattern of betraying your trust and when to know it's time to fight for them versus when it’s time to walk away. They discuss what to look for when establishing trust, the commitments you need to see to begin trusting again, why you need to know your self worth, the importance of knowing why they have a pattern of betraying you, and actions you can take as a couple to work through the pain and begin moving towards positive results and a process of healing. SHOW NOTES: Recognizing Patterns | Lisa and Tom share when to know it’s time to walk away. [0:34] Committed | Lisa and Tom discuss the commitments needed to work past being betrayed. [3:15] Know Your Worth | Lisa and Tom share the importance of knowing what you deserve. [5:01] Why | Tom and Lisa discuss the importance of knowing why they betrayed your trust. [5:53] Action | Lisa and Tom share how to work through patterns of betrayal and begin healing. [7:02] Results | Tom and Lisa share the importance of putting in the work and seeing change. [9:29] QUOTES: “Don’t trust what somebody says, don’t even trust what they do, but always, always trust a pattern.” [1:51] “There is something driving this and actually figuring out what’s driving it and processing through is the only thing that would be of interest to me.” [6:54] “…no, you have a pattern of behavior and until you address the underlying cause, this pattern of behavior is going to continue regardless of what your deep desire to fix it is.” [8:52] FOLLOW TOM: Instagram: http://bit.ly/2s9lU90 YouTube: http://bit.ly/2KWanAC Podcast: https://spoti.fi/2xEloFL FOLLOW LISA: Instagram: https://bit.ly/2TIsoKh YouTube: https://bit.ly/2IAbTcH Podcast: https://spoti.fi/2IEajGW0

Tom Rath is a bestselling author and researcher who has spent the past two decades studying how work can improve human health and well-being. He has written several books, his newest one comes out in February and it is titled, Life’s Great Question: Discover How You Contribute to the World. Tom set out to write this book as a result of his personal reflections over the last several years. He says, “I've really been personally reflecting on, given my own health challenges and threats and my mortality, what are the most important things for people to get focused on? In particular, most of my writing and research is focused on that nexus of people and organizations, and how can we help people to lead better lives through the organizations that they're a part of? And one thing I've observed after 20 years of, kind of following this area is that we're often so quick to look inward and think about self-development and our own brand and how we can improve personally, and the more I have studied these topics, my big takeaway is that we can get more done and life is less stressful and more liberating when we find real concrete ways to focus almost all of our energies on the contribution we're making to other people” The book addresses topics such as how to separate our identity from our job title, why following our dreams is not always the best approach, and the things teams need to address in order to be effective. One thing Tom has observed over the years is that the relationship between organizations and employees is broken. Why? Mostly because the basic structure of organizations today is outdated and ineffective for the modern age. It no longer suffices to bribe employees to work with monetary rewards, people today want more than that. They want purpose and meaning in the work that they do. They want to feel that they are contributing something to the organization and the world. As Tom shares, “I think the question is how quickly can we get to a place where each of us as individuals and organizations start to say, "Are we producing people who are better off when they go home at night?" They're healthier and they're more financially secured, that does matter. They have better relationships with their family members because they chose to be a part of this organization.” But this isn’t just up to the organizations to fix, individuals have a role as well. “Each of us has the responsibility to make sure that we're not tolerating a job or a work that's making our lives worse at the end of the day than we were when we showed up in the morning. And we need to start to ask some of those critical questions, ask the people around us, ask your best friend or your spouse, "Do you think I'm a better person because I'm doing this job right now versus where I was a year ago?" And sometimes they can help hold up a mirror where we need it as well.” What you will learn: Why Tom first started writing, even though it is not what he originally planned on doing How he approaches his day to day work and life What’s wrong with the employee-organization relationship and how do we fix it? Advice for leaders who want to be role models How to discover what you contribute to the world Why following your passions and dreams is not the best approach

Ever notice how a growth mindset leads to opportunity and success and how a poverty mindset leaves you with nothing but want, and often spirals downwards into an ongoing funk? We have to use our physical state to change our mental state, and vice versa. There’s a feedback loop between our bodies and brains, which is why mindset and behavior are so powerful for creating the reality we desire. This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy I dig into how to do that, and so much more, with Tom Bilyeu. Tom a filmmaker and serial entrepreneur who chased money hard for nearly a decade and came up emotionally bankrupt. To that end, he and his partners sold their technology company and founded Quest Nutrition—a company predicated not on money, but rather on creating value for people with the mission to end metabolic disease, something impacting Tom’s own family. After exiting Quest and generating extraordinary personal wealth, Bilyeu turned his attention to the other pandemic facing society, the poverty of poor mindset. To solve the mindset problem at scale and help hundreds of millions of people adopt an empowering mindset he has co-founded the media studio, Impact Theory with his business partner and wife, Lisa Bilyeu. Their aim is to influence the cultural subconscious by creating content that empowers people. This episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy is brought to you by ButcherBox. Have you been frustrated by the speed of reimbursements? I recently took a survey of physicians. In that survey, one of the questions I asked was, what is your biggest financial concern? Time and time again, physician after physician answered one word…. reimbursements. So, I've been on a mission to help empower physicians with knowledge, resources, and tools to combat this problem. . I've often heard it said that physicians have a Porsche drawer. A drawer worth 70k or 80k or even 100k of bills yet to be paid by the insurance companies or the patients. Our next guest, Tom Furr, is the founder and CEO of a company trying to speed all of this up. He's been quoted at least a dozen publications I could find online- everything from Physicians Practice to Becker's Hospital CFO to H-I-S Talk. In this podcast, you will discover: - Why Tom founded PatientPay and how a late bill inspired him to establish this company - My story of how my wife and I are slowing down reimbursements and what you can do about it - How you can generate cash flow more quickly and speed up your reimbursements For all the show notes, transcription and more, check out the podcast website at http://doctorfreedompodcast.com/

I am so thrilled today to have Tom Bilyeu on the show! I recently had the amazing opportunity and experience of being interviewed on his podcast, Impact Theory and I couldn’t wait to continue the conversation and learn even more about the similarities in our lives and business – and this time, pick his brain. Similar to my journey, Tom grew up in a family who struggled with their weight, and broke the pattern by choosing to pave a healthier way for himself and as result change the trajectory of his life at the same time. That’s why today he’s so passionate about helping others who struggle with their weight. However, Tom is the first to acknowledge that it’s not always an easy path. In fact, when it comes to success in weight loss or a business or career, nothing is guaranteed – except the pain or struggle. And to get through any of that, you must take action and also accept that you may not be right about x-y-z right now. We have to be willing to make changes if we want to see change. Tune in to learn just what Tom does that helps him do just that. He shares so many tangible takeaways for all of us to start looking at what we’re doing right now and more into our next level of life. Please let me know what thoughts or actions you put into place because of them! -- Question Highlights: Can you tell us a little about your background and what got you started in studying film? What’s the difference between finding knowledge and finding what motivates you? What is it in your mind that makes you contemplate what is good and change your path? What do you do and what do you look for in order to make sure you’re putting yourself in those spaces? What does creativity mean to you and what would your life look like without it? Where does the creation of a comic book fit into things right now? What’s your grand vision for what you’re doing right now? Do you know what that one story is? How are you seeking out the people needed for your next level? In This Episode We Talk about: Tom’s family history of obesity Why Tom’s deeply passionate about helping people who struggle with weight Why the brain is malleable until we die Embracing inadequacies 80/20 motivation principle The difference between drive and ambition How Quest Nutrition was founded on passion Why Tom wasn’t a born entrepreneur The concept of renewal in nature and in life Cultivating a frame of reference Tom’s eagerness to reinvent himself Finding fulfillment Accepting that you’re wrong about things now Why being the smartest person in the room is a trap Being “anti-fragile” Harnessing adaptability Building relationships and making authentic connections And so much more… Quotes “I’m going to believe the things that empower me.” “The gap between where you are and what you want to accomplish is a gap of skillset. It is you not being good enough.” “If you want to get to extraordinary, you’re going to have to realize that we’re rewarded and punished.” “Drive is the willingness to act on a day-to-day basis in a way that moves you toward your goals. Ambition is having the goals.” “To develop my drive, I had to suffer.” “Things that are hard are gonna be the things that develop who you are.” “What would we do and love every day even if we were failing?” “The struggle is guaranteed – the success is not.” “The skillset you already have has already taken you as far as its going to unless you do something that introduces you to a new idea that you turn into a usable skill.” -- Tom Bilyeu is the co-founder of 2014 Inc. 500 company Quest Nutrition — a unicorn startup valued at over $1 billion — and the co-founder and host of Impact Theory. Tom’s mission is to break people out of the Matrix by sharing transformative content and fostering one-to-one communication within the Impact Theory community. Tom believes that human potential is nearly limitless, but the dual pandemics of mental and physical malnutrition are hindering a realization of this potential. Through in-depth interviews with the world’s top achievers, including Gary Vaynerchuk, Maria Sharapova, and Mel Robbins, Tom explores mindset-shifting tactics, questions accepted belief systems, and uncovers distinctive strategies for success. Tom regularly inspires audiences of entrepreneurs, change makers, and thought leaders at prestigious conferences and seminars around the world, including Success Live, Hustle Con, Thrive, Abundance 360, Mindvalley’s A-fest, and Freedom Fast Lane. Tom has been featured on numerous top-rated podcasts such the Tony Robbins Podcast, The School of Greatness with Lewis Howes, Bulletproof Radio with Dave Asprey, and the Dr. Drew Podcast, and has been featured in Forbes, Inc., Success, and The Huffington Post.
