As I mentioned when I covered how I built Wallstrip, I'm doing more origin stories over the next year. I'm covering my own projects as well as those of the ten or fifteen people from the companies I've loved and the products I've used in Web 2. There were mostly good exits, but there were also a few that we learned from.  In today's episode I'm back in the hot seat covering the lessons learned from building Stocktwits in a Web 2 world. Knut and Riley join me as we talk about what worked back then, and what it will take to succeed building a company moving forward.  This is a very different era. Back then money was the game in a zero interest rate world. Today I think it's more about the craft, and less about money. Do you know who your customer is? What are your margins? How are you going to make money, and how are you going to get your users? If founders and investors aren't asking those questions today, they could be looking at massive losses down the road. I hope this helps and maybe gives you a peak at what might be coming around the corner as AI seems to be eating the world right now. No, you haven't entered the Twilight Zone. Yes, I'm the host of Panic with Friends, but in today's special episode, I'm the guest. My producer Knut Jensen has turned the tables and put me in the hot seat. With so many questions about how and why I started Wallstrip, I felt it was time to lay it all out. And hopefully this answers a lot of those questions.  We cover the good, the bad, and the funny times building my first internet company – and how those lessons carried over when I started Stocktwits – lessons like finding the right mentor and having domain experience around an idea, and the three key ingredients: product, team and timing. It's a different spin on Panic with Friends where we're going back and telling these types of stories with our best founders, so you'll be seeing more episodes like this in the future. And of course, the big question on Wallstrip, would I do it again? In this episode, I'm back in the hot seat again while my producer Knut grills me on what I'm calling my ‘errors of omission'. It's part of my plan this year to cover various points in my career. Previously I've discussed details on Wallstrip and Stocktwits. Both of those episodes answered a lot of the questions I've been asked over the years.  But one of the questions I'm asked most often as an investor and entrepreneur is, “Howard, what's your biggest mistake, your biggest miss?” I've been in this game for a while now – so it's a splendid idea to finally share them in a format where everyone can learn from my mistakes.  I lay out my biggest errors, or what I would call errors of omission versus errors of commission, in the spirit of Bessemer Ventures “anti-portfolio” – that is some of the biggest ones they missed, like AirBnb, Coinbase, and eBay to name a few. I cover three of my biggest whiffs. It's part of the joy of investing, the irreverence, having the cojones to create a whole anti-portfolio and share it. You may have even heard of one or two of mine.  Guest - Howard Lindzon, General partner at Social Leverage and Host of Panic With Friends Podcast  Host - Knut Jensen  howardlindzon.com, socialleverage.com  Twitter: @howardlindzon, @PanicwFriends, @knutjensen  LinkedIn: howardlindzon, socialleverage, knutejensen #fintech #invest #investment #venturecapital #stockmarket #finance  Time Stamps:  Intro (00:33) Knut's biggest mistake (01:39) The anti-portfolio (02:10) Getting asked to dance (03:57) Setting the stage (05:01) First miss (06:26) Network Effects (10:20) Lesson on valuation (12:51) The next big miss (14:21) Making the same mistake (16;00) Another big miss (17:51) The lesson learned (24:58) Wrapping it up (26:38) Outro (28:18)

I'm excited to finally have my friend Joe McCann on the show. He's the founder of Asymmetric, a modern-day crypto fund. Joe's probably one of the smartest people I follow on Twitter and I usually get caught up reading his monthly letters. I wanted to have Joe on the show and get his thoughts on navigating the crypto space. Nowadays most people have disdain for crypto, but the data will not go away. There's still a lot of people with significant digital assets, including myself. And at Social Leverage, we've invested in Lumida (Fund IV) – a digital asset first wealth manager. Oana is the founder and CEO of Sequel.io, which allows organizations of all sizes to host live events and webinars right on their own website. It's a no-code solution that lets marketers turn live video into leads by embedding events on their own websites. Coming from a marketing background at HP, Oana launched Sequel.io shortly before the pandemic to solve her own marketing pain points. And she's building quite a juggernaut in the live-video space.  Part of the fun in being a seed investor is using many of the products in the portfolio early. In this episode I sit down with my producer Knut Jensen to take a look ahead as we turn the calendar to 2023. Knut's panicked about his portfolio, and we sift the current landscape to find some reasons to be optimistic, though I'm not even sure I want to look back at 2022 – everything made sense, and nothing made sense. The biggest story happened towards the end; that was crypto and fraud. But my job here at Panic with Friends is to keep talking to really smart people and stay an inch ahead, a week ahead, a month ahead of where the trends are. We have to get back to the fundamentals, pick ourselves up and push forward into the new year. So it's a good time to turn the page, clean things up, and start fresh.  Host - Howard Lindzon, Managing Partner at Social Leverage, and Host of Panic With Friends Podcast  Sidekick - Knut Jensen, Producer of Panic With Friends Podcast  howardlindzon.com, socialleverage.com  Twitter: @howardlindzon, @socialLeverage, @PanicwFriends, @knutjensen  linkedin.com/in/howardlindzon  linkedin.com/in/knutejensen  linkedin.com/company/socialleverage  #fintech #invest #investment #venturecapital #stockmarket #finance  Show Notes: Introduction (00:15) Weighing in on FTX (02:26) Need for regulation (03:38) What worked (05:58) Bears outnumber Bulls (06:25) Addressing fraud (08:22) What's the next bull market look like? The past three years have been unprecedented on many levels. For investors and venture capital in particular, rising interest rates, hyper competitiveness and the speed of innovation have changed the game. It's the end of an era, says Howard Lindzon, Founding Managing Partner of Social Leverage, an early stage seed investment fund, and co-founder of Stocktwits, a social network for investors and traders.“The world is smaller today. You are not going to see an Uber that goes into China in its second year. You are going to see valuation compression and a lot of money chasing fewer big ideas," he says.In today's episode, Howard tells Jamie and Ana why he started Stocktwits (“Twitter for stocks" as he describes it); what he looks for in a potential investment; why he focuses on seed stage companies; trends to watch in 2023; and why we need to mentor Gen Z and not criticize them. You can find show notes and other information at CarsonGroup.com/Framework

My subject for today is governance, a pet peeve of mine. The lack of governance this funding cycle hasn't been a good thing. We've got a lot of young people who've received capital and don't know how to structure governance, prepare a board deck, or interact with their advisors and investors. Most of us learned from doing, and this generation will learn too; but when you put a lot of money in people's hands you need to have governance, something we're seeing more of with the WeWork breakdown and the FTX fraud. To stem this, we have to create tools and software that makes the process of governance tenable. My guest is Surfboard (Social Leverage Fund IV) founder and CEO Chuhan Wang. Her mission is to help founders, boards, and advisors stay in the loop with a better system for communication, board deck access and retrieval, and compilation – the overall world of corporate governance. Chuhan's vision is to empower founders for success by responsibly harnessing the power of their boards and investors. With founders emerging from all corners of the world, and remote work being a trend, her modern board and investor experience will spark innovation in the next generation of founders.  Guest - Chuhan Wang, Founder and CEO at Surfboard  howardlindzon.com, surfboard.team  Twitter: @howardlindzon, @therealchuhan, @TeamSurfboard, @PanicwFriends, @knutjensen  linkedin.com/in/chuhan-wang #fintech #invest #investment #venturecapital #stockmarket #finance  Show Notes: Introduction (00:42) Welcome Chuhan (08:22) What is Surfboard? I'm excited to have Bobby Matson, founder and CEO of Payitoff.io, back on the podcast. The last time he was on the show was in April of 2020, less than a month into the global COVID panic. Since then, 45 million plus Americans with student debt have kicked the can down the road. Until now.  Bobby is a self-taught coder. He and his wife had student loan debt to deal with, so they built a product called Payitoff.io to help sort it out. Their API allows financial apps to empower borrowers with ways to assess and address their student debt while freeing up cash to invest or spend.  And while there's been a “pause” in repayment, student debt did not go away. The problem was just brushed aside for a couple of years. During those few years, Bobby and his team went and built other debt API products. But as repayments are starting up again, the “phones have been ringing off the hook” as everybody tries to catch up. Bobby and his team stayed in the game, didn't overspend their VC money, and kept things under control. In this week's episode, I brought on Vinny Lingham – an entrepreneur, founder, prolific crypto investor, and decentralization pied piper. Vinny is an old friend who I first met back at a fintech conference in Ireland. We quickly hit it off after a round of golf and idea pitching. He has been in the crypto space since the beginning and has even been called a crypto ‘oracle' due to his accurate bitcoin predictions. I figured he would be the perfect person to catch up with and get a point of view from following the recent epic crash in crypto. Vinny puts his crypto knowledge to use as co-founder and CEO of Civic, a blockchain-powered tech company that Social Leverage was also an early investor in. I truly believe in Vinny and the work he's doing. In addition to his work at Civic, Vinny is a general partner at Multicoin Capital (a name you may recognize from past Panic guest Kyle Samani) and co-founder of the South African VC Newtown Partners. In this episode, Vinny and I talk about decentralization, crypto, the long-term scalability of bitcoin, blockchain, virtual intelligence, data privacy, and more. If you want to learn about SPACs, look to Daniel Cohen. He has been with the SPAC phenomenon since the beginning and has been a major player in really innovating this space. He even inspired me to launch Social Leverage’s SPAC. In this episode, Daniel helps give some context into how the SPAC craze got to where it is today. Daniel is the Chairman of Cohen & Company and Managing Member of FinTech Masala, two SPAC powerhouses focused on Insurance and FinTech SPACs, president and CEO at FTAC Hera Acquisition Corp, chairman of Bancorp and former CEO of RAIT Financial Trust. Daniel’s a hustler, having launched 10 SPACs since his first deal in 2015 and currently working on his next. But as impressive as his resumé is, the most impressive aspect of Daniel’s career to me is that he works with his family. In fact, Daniel’s most notable and high-profile merger deal with eToro was with his mom Betsy Cohen. In this episode, Daniel and I chat about the SPAC craze’s opportunities and areas of concern, big data, money management, COVID’s impact on tech and business travel, working with his family and more.  Guest - Daniel G Cohen, President and CEO at FTAC Hera Acquisition Corp. This week’s Alpha Trader podcast features hosts Aaron Task and Stephen Alpher talking first with Mike Novogratz, founder and CEO of Galaxy Digital Holdings (BRPHF), and then with Howard Lindzon, co-founder of StockTwits and general partner at Social Leverage. “This GameStop (GME) squeeze is deeper than a squeeze,” tweeted Novogratz last week. “It is a revolution that started with people not trusting central authority; it is a call for transparency and fairness. It makes my more bullish crypto but more importantly more focused and committed to systems change.” De-centralization, represented mostly by Bitcoin (BTC-USD), but also by Ethereum (ETH-USD), and other blockchains may help hold the answer to some of these issues, says Novogratz, as crypto goes right after the “rent-takers.” Bitcoin, he says, is this generation’s “digital gold,” i.e. it’s going to be too clunky to be another currency, but will work perfectly as a store of value. Ethereum, he says, is the “fabric” upon which we can rebuild institutions. He’s bullish on the prices of both since both networks will continue to gain users, and more users means more value. This doesn’t mean there won’t ever be big moves to the downside - rest assured, there will be - but over time the chart direction will be upward and to the right. Next up is Howard Lindzon, an investor in Robinhood (RBNHD), who freely admits the company likely made some PR mistakes last week, but also had no choice - given the capital needs of any broker/dealer - to halt trading in a number of names. As to whether this is an existential blow to the Robinhood franchise, Lindzon notes the staggering number of Robinhood app downloads in the past few days suggests otherwise. He also reminds of major stumbles by a wide range of large-cap stalwarts over the years - they ended up being just that … stumbles. There’s plenty more, including the guests’ takes on whether the silver (XAGUSD:CUR) squeeze can work, why former global macro portfolio manager Novogratz is betting on an upside surprise in interest rates, and Lindzon’s reminder that open price discovery cures many ills. On this episode of the Superpowers podcast, Bill and Chris talk with Howard Lindzon, Founder and Partner at Social Leverage. Howard is a kind-hearted Canadian entrepreneur, author, and investor whose superpower is his social intelligence and self-understanding. A product of his Jewish upbringing in Toronto, Howard calls himself a “Larry David meets venture capital.” He had a lot of side hustles as a kid and tried his hand at stand-up comedy as a teen. Eventually he earned his MBA from ASU and started his career as a stockbroker in Dallas. One day Howard cold-called an entrepreneur to pitch stocks, but the conversation took a turn. He ended up partnering with the businessman on a stress ball startup called, “The Grip.” That experience taught Howard valuable lessons in running a business, which he applied when founding a hedge fund shortly after, only to discover quickly that he preferred the lifestyle of angel investing. “I had a pretty good eye for picking winners,” Howard told the Bill and Chris. After one of Howard’s investments flourished, he built a relationship with the founder and collaborated with him to build StockTwits, a platform for investors. As Howard described, “It’s basically Twitter for investors.” A year later, Howard founded Social Leverage to advise and invest in promising tech startups. He wanted to invest in the things he cared about that make a positive difference in people’s lives. Social Leverage’s core goals include elevating the conversation on investing and educating more people on how to navigate startups.

Ryan Reeves 0:13 Okay, so, today on investing, city podcasts were overjoyed to have Howard Lindzon. Howard is a legend in the investments world and we're just so excited to have him on. So, thank you, Howard. Howard Lindzon 0:25 No problem. No problem. Legend. I don't know. Ryan Reeves 0:29 Well, the listeners can decide. But I just want to start to start with a little bit of background cuz I follow you on your daily blog. It feels like I know you and kind of your personal life, but I just want to drill down on some other aspects. So you grew up in Toronto, you grew up in Toronto and went to school in Toronto undergrad, a name winter Arizona state for a master's program and then tell us a little bit about your background from there on. Howard Lindzon 1:03 I was back it was the Gulf War was ending the one I was in Phoenix didn't want to move back to Canada. I had to get a sponsored green card or visa H1 visa, I forget exactly what it was called at the time, probably the same thing and became a stockbroker. You know any job to stay in the country was the goal didn't matter. I had a business degree but no professional. degree and so I was cold calling right out of grad school and fell in love with the stock market which kind of led to everything you know. Had some good mentors early and here I am, today still investing and loving the stock market. So that was 91, 27 years ago. Ryan Reeves 2:06 In those days did somebody kind of show you the ropes? Are you figured out yourself or just tell us a little bit about that? Howard Lindzon 2:18 No, I mean you're supposed to make cold calls, what intrigued me was you know how to put together stories and research from the brokerage that I worked for which was principal group and you know just cold calling try and talk to people with money so wasn't so much a stock market intrigued me it was just a job I didn't love cold call and in love selling securities so in the end I they ended up you know in one of my cold calls I came upon a an entrepreneur ended up getting sidetracked you know working in the startup called pro innovative concepts which became kind of a company we together made a lot of money and circle back to the stock market because we were investing so kind of the stock market passion came later from the other side of the table actually being the one that had money to invest Ryan Reeves 3:37 And so, tell us a little bit about that call. So, you're cold calling. And how did you get this guy's number? And had you kind of hit it off? Howard Lindzon 3:44 Um, well, I mean, you know, you open up local back then there's no internet. So, you open up the Business Journal and you would see who they were writing about. And, and then, you know, call them assuming they were wealthy. When I called mark, the founder, he actually turned out to not have a nickel, but he had a great cool company. And we, you know, we all got involved in that company. So, it really wasn't, he...

In Episode 84, we welcome investor and entrepreneur, Howard Lindzon. Howard starts by giving us his background. He was a broker who felt the pain of the ’87 crash. In the aftermath, he got the angel investing and entrepreneurial bugs. He’s currently an investor in Robinhood, and he started StockTwits – which you might think of as Twitter-for-finance. He also runs a fund, Social Leverage. Given that Howard has spent plenty of time in the public markets, Meb starts by asking about his public market framework, and how he approaches markets today. Howard tells us that he likes to see which investments are doing well, then try to join in – in his words “classic trend following.” He uses the analogy of the great white shark and the pilot fish. Howard is a pilot fish, following the great white. He likes this approach as “there’s so many ways the markets are rigged that I think it’s best to just follow along the trends.” Howard believes this approach of following the great whites also works in the private markets. Meb asks about something Howard wrote in regards to learning to invest – it was something along the lines of “open an account, lose money, get a mentor.” Howard expounds on that, focusing on how everyone needs a mentor. Howard wants to help other investors through his own writing and advice. He references Millennials, and how he wants to use tools to help them. Meb asks Howard’s advice for people who want to learn to be better investors, and how to find a mentor. This leads to a conversation about Howard’s site, StockTwits. Whereas Wall Street felt that people wouldn’t share quality investment information (just keep it to yourself so only you can benefit), Howard felt that many people would want to share their good ideas. Many of these people do exactly that on StockTwits. So, Howard suggests finding someone there that matches your own investing style and temperament, who has a consistent, good track record, and just follow along. Meb asks which gurus Howard suggests following these days in order to get great information. Be sure to listen to this part to get the specific names. Next, Meb transitions the guys toward private investing. He asks for an overview on the blurring of the lines between private and public markets, and the development of the seed stage being open to individuals. Howard tells us things changed in 2007/2008 – it was “the cloud” that was the catalyst, bringing down the costs of starting a company. He says now we’re in a transition stage where many private companies are actually staying private for too long. He references Uber, saying how it feels a bit late for it to go public, but it’s too big to be private. Meb asks about the realities of private market investing for listeners, noting how some of our pasts guests have had different opinions. Howard has some helpful thoughts you’ll want to hear, but he notes that to be a great angel investor, you need to invest over multiple generations – 20 years or so. You need this time to see an overall crop of investments work out. This leads into a discussion of Howard’s fund, Social Leverage. Howard gives us the details as to what they’re looking for, as well as the fund goals. As always, there’s plenty more, including a discussion of when Bitcoin was less than $1, Howard’s publication, The Peloton, and, of course, his most memorable trade. Not investing in Twitter and Zynga when he had the chance comes to mind. Hear all the details in Episode 84.
