SHOW NOTES:• You don't ever want to give up. Because when people start their businesses, these things don't happen overnight, and most likely, it's not going to happen in your first month. You might, in some network marketing companies, in your first month or so, you can earn bonuses, I did. It actually changed the trajectory for me, I earned bonuses within my first couple of months, I earned a car bonus, which was definitely helpful in my situation. (03:10)• I don't care if it's a brick and mortar business, if it's an online business, if it's a boutique business, if it's a mobile business, if it's network marketing, you have to stay consistent in your actions. You have to be taking action every single day, because if you give up or your consistency breaks down, you don't get results. (05:35)• Whatever your product, your brand, your label, whatever it is that you want out there, you need to make sure that you get it out there enough to where people picture you when they hear that word. Many of you know my business, I'm a Thriver, I have my personal Thrive business. When people see Thrive, people that I'm connected to, they think of me because I've done that job of reaching out and putting my name on that. (08:08)• The CEO was talking to us, and this was in the very beginning. I was very new to it, and I was also very new to being a single mom, and I'll never forget how he said, If you want to get to the top, you're going to have to sacrifice time. You're going to have to sacrifice time with your family. You're going to have to sacrifice. Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast dives deep into BAAZIGAR (1993) starring Shahrukh Khan and Kajol for its 78th episode. Shilpa Shetty’s debut feature (and what a historic debut it was!), Baazigar is hands down one of the best Abbas Mustan movies ever made.  Combining a revenge drama with youthful shenanigans, this is the movie that firmly established SRK’s anti-hero credentials and cemented his storied chemistry with Kajol. With a soundtrack that continues to spell nostalgia for an entire generation, Baazigar is still frequently referenced when discussing Khan’s filmography. We are joined by Justin Rao of PTI as we evaluate whether this is the best Abbas Mustan thriller or, indeed, the best SRK anti-hero thriller. This week, I am joined by my good friend, curator, journalist and teacher Paolo Ferrarini (@paolostyleops). Paolo started his career in trend forecasting before becoming a design journalist and teacher at several of Europe's most prestigious schools. He writes for the Cool Hunting and Italian design title Interni as well. We met a few years back in Milan and were lucky to have the opportunity to spend more time together during a couple of press trips (which I organised), back in the days when we could, you know, travel!Paolo indulged me first by telling me about his career, which as it turns out I didn't know so much about, his passion for great craftsmanship and photography, including a course in self-portraiture, pre-selfies. He offers bold thoughts on the future of fashion and how companies should create content out of love, making authenticity a company strategy, rather than merely a philosophy. Paolo, a podcaster himself, tells me about interviewing one of his idols Debbie Millman (the podcast is out this week) for Edit Naples, and his new talk project, the Human Difference talks. We finish on my favorite questions: What is your favorite word? Quotes: “When you’re highly sensitive, that sensation is loud.” — April Snow “We start to doubt ourselves. We start to silence that inner wisdom, that intuition.” — April Snow “Anxiety is a big marker that you’re living a lifestyle that’s not quite in alignment with your temperament.” — April Snow “Because of our level of empathy, if someone else is hurting, we’re hurting.” — April Snow “A lot of time when HSPs are anxious, it’s just because they’re doing too much.” — April Snow “Saying ‘No’ some of the time is actually preserving the relationship.” — April Snow EPISODE 128   Show Notes: You pick up on things in your environment—things others don’t notice. The Episode in 60 Seconds Neal Conlon came to marketing wisdom through a tough route: Marine training. After his military service, he went to work behind the scenes in the financial industry and began to see cracks, systems, and opportunities. Within a matter of years, he was leading the marketing effort in B2B tech industry. This circuitous route to leadership gives him a crystal clear clarity. He also sees building strategy from a different vantage point. We delve into both concepts on this episode of Studio CMO. Our Guest Neal Conlon has had a long history leading marketing and sales for a number of SaaS organizations, including being the CMO at ACME Growth. He headed up marketing and business development for Flamingo and Plurilock, and among a number of other leadership roles, he was most recently the head of sales and marketing for AppGuard. In this episode, Parker shares with Susan and Todd how hardship sharpens resilience, compassion as courage, and losing oneself in the discovery of what you didn’t know you were looking for.Show NotesYou're on an Airplane: A Self-Mythologizing MemoirThe BooksellerPlayhouse 90,

This week we are joined by Jake Muise, CEO & Founder of Maui Nui Venison. Born and raised in Northern Canada, Jake followed his gut to Hawaiʻi for college as a D1 athlete. During his years at Mānoa, he was taken in by a Molokaʻi family which was where his relationship with Axis deer began—over holidays and summer breaks, alongside multi-generational subsistence hunters. Over the years, his fascination and respect for this animal grew and after founding a research-based non-profit, the Axis Deer Institute, he took on several projects managing Hawaiʻiʻs invasive ungulates. Maui Nui grew out of his passion to create a full-bodied solution that saw Hawaiʻiʻs deer as both a non-native species in need of active population management as well as an incredible food resource whose sustainability and viability needed to be ensured in the long term. For Jake, hunting and environmentalism in Hawaiʻi are inseparable parts of the same set of actions and concerns. In many ways Maui Nui is bridging the gap between how much of the world obtains meat...and the #WildGameBased lifestyle. A thoughtful, and scientific based approach to wild game management, food and protecting the delicate ecosystems of the beautiful Hawai'ian Islands. Andrew Cushen is the Engagement Director at InternetNZ and leads the Community, Events and Communications teams ~ I speak for myself when I say that I take the internet and everything it affords for granted. These days, at least in terms of access, it’s not often that I think twice about grabbing my smartphone, messaging a friend, scrolling through apps, purchasing something via online banking or downloading and listening to a podcast (hi!) - but as we’ll explore today, not everyone is included in this powerful internet space. And not being included can have massive repercussions, which will only increase as our lives and our world barrel towards an increasingly digital future. Our guest today is the very engaging Engagement Director of InternetNZ, Andrew Cushen, who has over 15 years experience in managing relationships, messages and issues across the Internet, telco and tech sectors. InternetNZ is a non-profit organization who are the guardians of the .nz domain names. They also have the social mission of creating an internet for New Zealanders that is safe, accessible and good, and a big part of their work advocates for digital inclusion. In this episode, Andrew and I discuss what digital inclusion means, what some of the different elements of digital inclusion are and the straightforward, challenging and sometimes complex hurdles that exist within each of those elements. This conversation with Andrew makes it hugely apparent that although many of us can leverage and do enjoy what the internet affords, in an increasingly digital world, we must ensure that we are not leaving anyone behind - but of equal importance is making sure that the internet is a safe and trustworthy place in which to be. Although InternetNZ is a New Zealand based organization, this episode may provide some inspiration for ideas to pursue in relation to digital inclusion wherever you are in the world. Shownotes: You can learn more about InternetNZ by checking out their website. For specific info about Digital Inclusion, click here. InternetNZ also support this show, which means that I am able to keep creating and you are able to keep listening to the different perspectives that are presented here at Selfie Reflective - so on behalf of us all, thanks a tonne, InternetNZ! AND… Tracers; Gathering information is important for lawyers, especially lawyers who do litigation. As you no doubt know, law doesn’t win cases, facts do, and often one or two key facts can make or break a case. Key facts are tied to witnesses who sometimes are elusive. Key facts can involve things about your client that they conveniently “forget” to tell you. And for sure key facts are incriminating things about the opposing party. Key facts can be in social media or any number of public databases. So how do you find the key facts quickly and easily? Well, you can find them but not usually quickly and easily. Even the publicly available information is strewn about in lots of different public records or online locations that you can’t find using one Google search. So stop trying to use Google and don’t waste time, energy, or money. Use Tracers; instead. That’s how you can get cost-effective access to asset records, social media posts, and detailed background information on anyone of interest to you or your client. The cost is based on a “pay per search” pricing with a $39 monthly minimum. The searches aren’t super expensive so you might only spend $39 per month and be able to do a few searches. But however much you use it you can expense the cost to your client matter because it’s an essential service. I recommend that every lawyer at least sign up , learn what it can do, and get used to having an amazing resource at your fingertips. If you use the promo code Ernie100 the first $100 of your search will be free. * EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment. Samantha has been a performer her whole life – “I sang for 50 cents at weddings and a dollar at funerals from when I was a little girl. I sang backup for MC Hammer and with Joan Sutherland at the Australia Opera. I’ve led shows and developed my own. I’ve always been happiest on a stage but I’ve also been stuck in “people pleaser and approval” mode and that’s taken its toll. It even lead me to dropping the dream of being a performer for the “sensible” career option of accounting on the behest of my family. Over the years Sam invested so much time and energy checking, testing, showing different pieces of herself to different groups to fit in and be seen in the way she felt she needed to be. It was exhausting. And when this is your focus, you begin to lose track of who you really are. But Sam has now interrupted this cycle. She chose to shift her gaze, to weave all the pieces of her into a whole. She began to approve of herself and appreciating where she’d come from, so she would never need to fit in anywhere again. She has proactively created a new stage for her life, one where confidence and charisma intersect. She truly belongs and it’s extraordinary. Show Notes You can break free of the conditioning of your past and chose a new path forward Firmly reject the “don’t be too big for your boots” judgments that might be levelled at you. Choose to shine. Confidence is not ego. It’s about how you feel within yourself. Mindfulness, deep breathing, visualisation and a clear focus on those you want to help be the best they can be. Imagine yourself pulling on your coat of charisma! Perfectionism can paralyse you – perfect is the enemy of good. Niki Bezzant is a multi-award-winning food writer, speaker and commentator ~ These days, where do you get your information about food and health? Do you go to the doctor? A nutritionist? Buy a magazine? A book? Do a Google search? Click through to your favourite influencer who looks amazing, cooks amazing and works out for 19 hours per week? And of those options, whose opinion, guidance or recommendations are you likely to trust the most? In this episode, we're joined by multi-award-winning writer, speaker, thinker and commentator, Niki Bezzant. In 2005, Niki was given the opportunity to be the founding editor of former print magazine, the Healthy Food Guide, and remained in that role up until 2016. Despite being New Zealand's most popular magazine in the food space, the Healthy Food Guide stopped being a physical publication in 2019. Although it's impossible to point the finger at social media as being the exclusive reason for this print magazine's demise, there's no doubt that it played a part.  Having been involved with food media for twenty years and nutrition for fifteen, Niki has seen huge shifts in the landscape over that time - and not necessarily for the better. Today, Niki muses on her time at Healthy Food Guide, and gives us insight about why she thinks social media can be a dangerous medium when it comes to highly personalised subjects like health. She speaks about why we must foster expert advice, and voices some refreshingly strong opinions about influencer culture. Niki also discusses why we need to look at the pictures of 'health' that we see on our feeds through a far more critical lens. It's a great listen that's packed with critical thoughts around the subjects of health, wellness, fitness and food on social media. Once you've had a listen, as always, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Topics include: the challenges that traditional media faces, why we need experts, influencer culture, privilege, diet fads and more. Shownotes: You can discover more about Niki on her website, and find her on Instagram. Niki also did a Ted Talk about social media in relation to food and health, which you can check out here. Correction:At the 28:00 mark; we are talking about Oxygen in beer.  Harrison mentions "500 Parts Per Million" of DO (Dissolved Oxygen).  The correct measurement is Parts Per Billion. (Reference) Huge Cheers to Greig M for bringing this to our attention! What We’re Drinking:Barrel-Aged Narwhal by Sierra Nevada BrewingABV: 11.9%IBU: 50Notes: Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.Jon's Cellar: Black Ops by Brooklyn Brewery (2017 Version)ABV: 10.7%IBU: 70Notes: Intense Russian imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels and 100% bottle refermented.Harrison's Cellar: Big Bad Baptist by Epic Brewing Co (Release #33)ABV: 11.8%IBU: N/ANotes: One Big Bad Imperial Stout with Cocoa nibs and Coffee beans. Each season's release uses a different dark roasted coffee.Jenn's Cellar: Barrel Aged Wee Heavy by AleSmith Brewing Company (2014 Version)ABV: 10%IBU: N/ANotes: A classic Scotch Ale. Scotch ales are typically sweet and malty, with a very subdued dose of hops– just enough to provide balance. AleSmith Wee Heavy is a wonderful interpretation of this traditional Scotch style. A year spent in bourbon barrels adds another layer of rich sweetness.Badge Notes:Any version of these base beers (Any Year) should still unlock the Drinking Socially Podcast badge.SponsorGregslist offers realtime updated information on Bars/Restaurants/Stores/More who are open during the Covid-19 Pandemic. To help out families stuck in their homes with small children, avoiding COVID-19, people have been creating videos of people reading picture books. And WHAT, I ask you, is a better readaloud than this storytime classic? Nothing, I tells ya! Nothing! Kate gets introduced to Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury for the very first time. Imagine showing someone, who has never seen this story performed for small children, encountering this book without that context. We spend a bit of our discussion considering the bear's motives here. Maybe the bear has come out of hibernation is starving. Maybe it's lonely. And maybe this is just a great book through and through. Maybe.
