In a news conference Wednesday, President Trump said he will be “strongly recommending” his administration look into sending troops to the city, which he called “a mess.” The comments come after Elon Musk and Mark Benioff said they'd like to see the National Guard in San Francisco. We discuss what may come next, but first we talk with the new host of “Reading Rainbow.” Almost 20 years since it went off air, the beloved kids' literacy show is back. The reboot is hosted by Mychal Threets who, until last year, was a librarian at the same Fairfield library he grew up frequenting. Guests: Mychal Threets, librarian and literacy advocate; new host of "Reading Rainbow" Marisa Lagos, politics correspondent, KQED; co-host, KQED's "Political Breakdown" Learn more about your ad choices. Author Bio: Heidi Herman was born and raised in Central Illinois, but her passion and a common theme in her writing is her Icelandic heritage. She spent more than thirty years in the telecommunications industry in a variety of roles that gave her a broad understanding of business, which she later applied to entrepreneurship, first in a small restaurant and later in a boutique publishing company. Her writing career started with the inspiration of her mother's example. In the winter of 2012, her mother, Íeda Jónasdóttir Herman, published a childhood memoir, which featured some of Iceland's folklore. Heidi was immersed in childhood memories of the Scandinavian legends, lore, and imaginative stories. The myth of Iceland's troll-like Christmas characters - Jólasveinar - sparked the imagination of many readers and led to Heidi writing her first book, "The Legend of the Icelandic Yule Lads." It was followed by two more books on Icelandic folklore: "The Guardians of Iceland and Other Icelandic Folk Tales" and "The Icelandic Yule Lads Mayhem at the North Pole." In 2017, she co-authored an Icelandic cookbook, "Homestyle Icelandic Cooking for American Kitchens" with her mother, Íeda Jónasdóttir Herman, which won a US category in The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards that year. Heidi published her debut novel, "Her Viking Heart", in 2018, and it was named the 2018 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Gold Winner - Romance Category. Her motivational work, "On with The Butter! Spread More Living onto Everyday Life" was inspired when Heidi worked to complete her mother's final work, "Never Too Late." Íeda Jónasdóttir Herman (1925-2019) was 94 years old and had completed a year of new experiences to prove a person is never too old to enjoy life. That message, along with her mother's example, led Heidi to write this new motivational book with ideas and encouragement on how anyone can find those activities and experiences. She had authored seven books in five genres, with a new cookbook slated to be released September 16, 2025. Today, she continues to write between time spent traveling, sharing Icelandic culture plus a number of hobbies and interests. When she's not on the go, she is usually found cooking something up in the kitchen.Cookbook lovers, this one's for you! Fall came in colder than an ex's heart, and Ryan and Joyhdae are officially over it. This week's episode starts with the great seasonal betrayal—one minute it's 80 degrees, the next you're waking up to 43 and questioning your life choices. From there, it's all downhill—or uphill, depending on how you feel about government shutdowns, Dolly Parton confusion, and Kamala Harris finally saying what we've all been thinking.Ryan and Joyhdae unpack a week that felt like America's group chat gone wrong. Kamala Harris dropped a perfectly timed “these motherfuckers are crazy,” and we've decided that's the energy we're carrying for the rest of the year. Meanwhile, the government still can't get its act together, Trump is threatening federal workers' paychecks, and somehow people are still trying to climb Mount Everest like it's a team-building exercise. If that's not enough chaos, Drake took another L—this time in court—proving Kendrick Lamar really ended the saga months ago. Dolly Parton's sister had everyone online planning candlelight vigils for no reason, Ayesha Curry reminded people that honesty about marriage is still too much for the internet, and Reading Rainbow is officially getting a reboot with Mychal the Librarian leading the way. Joyhdae also names her mother “El Chapo” and Ryan might have discovered family lies through an ancestry test, because of course he did. It's messy, it's real, it's deeply funny, and it's exactly what you need to get through another week in this ridiculous timeline. If you laughed, yelled, or side-eyed someone while listening, make sure to subscribe, hit like, and drop a comment telling us your favorite part of the episode. Your right to read is being infringed upon, and librarians have become the first responders in the fight for democracy and First Amendment rights. Texas has become ground zero as sweeping book bans are adopted at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians are being threatened with violence, harassed and accused of crimes. A new documentary, “The Librarians,” shows who is standing up for basic rights.
The Widening Divide In Politics, Love And Life From politics to dating to ideas of what success looks like, young men and women are increasingly on opposite sides. This week – We're joined by two experts who trace the divide back to social media, shifting power dynamics, and cultural change. Both also raise some key questions about how this generational split will reshape current norms. Why A Louisiana Librarian Became A National Target After middle school librarian Amanda Jones voiced her opposition to book banning at a local Louisiana school board meeting, she began receiving thousands of death threats. We cover both perspectives behind the book banning debate and talk to Jones about the challenges she's faced over the past few years and explore what drives her to keep advocating for her cause. Steve Roud is a Librarian, folklore scholar and creator of the Roud Folk Song Index, which contains upwards of 750,000 entries to around 45,000 English language folk songs, as found in books, recordings, manuscripts and other sources the world over. His index, and ‘Roud Numbers' (a numbering system employed to identify the same song across many different titles) are widely acclaimed for the scope, breadth, depth and impact. Steve worked as a local studies Librarian in the London Borough of Croydon, and also served as Honorary Librarian for the Folklore Society for eighteen years. He has published books on calendar custom, popular tradition, folk belief, London lore, children's games, and folk drama. In 2004, he was the winner of the Folklore Society's Katharine Briggs Folklore Award for The Penguin Guide to the Superstitions of Britain and Ireland. In 2009, he was one of five people to be awarded the Gold Badge of the English Folk Dance and Song Society. This award recognises "those who have made unique or outstanding contributions to the art or science of folk dance, music or song, and/or those who have given exceptional support in furthering the aims of the Society”. For four years now, Steve has been visiting the NFC, parsing through our manuscript and book, broadside and pamphlet collections for entries to add to his index. He is an incredibly gifted, meticulous and generous scholar, who is always glad to share his expertise with us, particularly in discussion around the inherent problems in the description, cataloguing and indexing of folklore materials. It was an honour, and a great pleasure to host Steve at the NFC recently, and during his visit (for our collective benefit) I subjected him to a 75 minute interview, in which we discussed his index, the problems inherent in describing folk song, approaches to the cataloguing of folklore, conducting research in folklore archives, and the problems inherent in the digitisation of folklore records and some scholarly critique of the NFC's online platform Dúchas.ie. As a health warning for this episode - listeners (or viewers!) hoping to listen to scores of lovely ballads will be sorely disappointed, as our discussion essentially consists of nerding out about folklore indexes for over an hour. Steve's Folk Song Index can be found here, at the website of the Vaughan William's Memorial Library: https://www.efdss.org/vwml-catalogues-and-indexes/vwml-help/roud-indexes-help For a wonderful talk of Steve's at the Library of Congress, see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVTMoN4Arvo My thanks especially to Veronica, Andrew and Dominic in UCD Communications, for their support of the podcast, and for filming this episode!

Director Kim A. Snyder discusses her new documentary called "The Librarians," which explores the role of libraries and the people who run them in today's politically fraught atmosphere. Focusing on librarians in Texas, responding to efforts to ban books about race and the LGBTQIA+ experience, the film illuminates a key angle in the conflict over access to information and art, and library patrons' so-called 'freedom to read.' Plus, New Jersey librarian Martha Hickson, who is featured in the film, shares her experiences and insights.

Streaming video is not new to the library environment, but recent years have seen an exponential growth in the number of platforms and titles available for streaming. For libraries, this has meant an increasingly complex acquisitions landscape, with more vendors occupying the marketplace and larger portions of the budget dedicated to streaming. Users increasingly expect video content to be available online and on demand, and streaming video is increasingly integrated into coursework. In Streaming Video Collection Development and Management (Bloomsbury, 2025), Michael Fernandez and Amauri Serrano outline the myriad challenges of managing streaming video content across all stages of the electronic resources lifecycle, from initial collection decisions to the user's experience of accessing the content. At every step, they provide practical advice on how to handle these challenges regardless of the size and budget of the institution. Librarians at community colleges, research institutions, specialized schools, and public libraries will find this a valuable and engaging guide. Michael Fernandez is the Head of Technical Services at Boston University, where he oversees a department tasked with managing electronic resources, cataloging, and processing physical collections. Previously he has held e-resource positions at Yale University and American University. He has published and presented on topics in e-resource management and currently serves as assistant editor for Library Resources & Technical Services in addition to being on the editorial board for The Serials Librarian. Amauri Serrano is the Head of Collection Strategy at Yale University Library, USA, where she leads and coordinates the library's holistic collection development and management strategy in all formats and is responsible for the collections budget. She was previously Central Collection Development Librarian at Yale and a humanities librarian at Florida State University and Appalachian State University. She has published book chapters and given presentations on collection development in the humanities, user outreach, and library instruction. This week on Cultivating Place, in honor of this first week of Autumn, and the idea of passing time, looking back, and the importance of memory and history, host Abra Lee welcomes someone whose work reminds us that gardens are not only grown in the soil but also in the stories we keep and share. Abra is in conversation with Rose Vincent, Resource Sharing Librarian at the New York Botanical Garden's renowned Mertz Library. Rose helps make one of the world's greatest collections of botanical knowledge accessible to people everywhere. Through her work, Rose ensures that plant lovers, researchers, and communities can connect, which links us through the living history of plants, gardens, and the people who tend them. She's also a curator and collaborator on creative exhibits, such as Dead Formats, which explore the various ways humans have recorded and shared their relationship with the plant world. Rose's work reminds us that libraries are not quiet, static spaces, but vibrant, growing gardens of knowledge — alive with connection, curiosity, and care. Rose is a librarian, a connector, a storyteller, and a keeper of botanical memory. Listen in! Cultivating Place now has a donate button! We thank you for listening over the years, and we hope you'll continue to support Cultivating Place. We can't thank you enough for making it possible for this young program to grow and engage in even more conversations like these. The show is available as a podcast on SoundCloud and iTunes.
