Director Kim A. Snyder discusses her new documentary called "The Librarians," which explores the role of libraries and the people who run them in today's politically fraught atmosphere. Focusing on librarians in Texas, responding to efforts to ban books about race and the LGBTQIA+ experience, the film illuminates a key angle in the conflict over access to information and art, and library patrons' so-called 'freedom to read.' Plus, New Jersey librarian Martha Hickson, who is featured in the film, shares her experiences and insights.

It's time for another one-player one-shot! The Librarian's Apprentice is a solo game I've had near the top of my list to play for a LONG time, and it's a shame it's taken me so long to get this to the table. This is a game by friend of the channel Daniel Bronson-Lowe, a.k.a. Almost Bedtime Theater who you may remember from the Tabletop Tutorial episode of i'm sorry did you say street magic? where we built a city within this game's infinite library together on this podcast! This is a game about playing a Librarian-to-be in an infinite library and working your way through its halls to find documents and uncover truths that will prove you worthy of the title Librarian. It is full of mystery, amazing oracles, prompts, and is so easy to play thanks to its elegant design. Not only that, the presentation of this game is so beautiful, coming in a package that unfolds into trifold pamphlets with bookmark character sheets, a library card, and the recently published Song of the Scryptwyrm expansion mystery adds even more amazing art through little hidden details and messages in the text. I can't recommend this game enough. For this one-player one-shot, we follow apprentice librarian Corbyn on his first document retrieval assignment, slowly uncovering information about the strange inhabitants of the library known as the gnosiphages, a.k.a. booklickers. ----more---- Join the DMs After Dark Discord channel! This week on Cultivating Place, in honor of this first week of Autumn, and the idea of passing time, looking back, and the importance of memory and history, host Abra Lee welcomes someone whose work reminds us that gardens are not only grown in the soil but also in the stories we keep and share. Abra is in conversation with Rose Vincent, Resource Sharing Librarian at the New York Botanical Garden's renowned Mertz Library. Rose helps make one of the world's greatest collections of botanical knowledge accessible to people everywhere. Through her work, Rose ensures that plant lovers, researchers, and communities can connect, which links us through the living history of plants, gardens, and the people who tend them. She's also a curator and collaborator on creative exhibits, such as Dead Formats, which explore the various ways humans have recorded and shared their relationship with the plant world. Rose's work reminds us that libraries are not quiet, static spaces, but vibrant, growing gardens of knowledge — alive with connection, curiosity, and care. Rose is a librarian, a connector, a storyteller, and a keeper of botanical memory. Listen in! Cultivating Place now has a donate button! We thank you for listening over the years, and we hope you'll continue to support Cultivating Place. We can't thank you enough for making it possible for this young program to grow and engage in even more conversations like these. The show is available as a podcast on SoundCloud and iTunes. More than 100 Labour MPs are calling this morning for the Government to put up gambling taxes to pay for scrapping the two child cap on universal credit. Lifting the cap would cost an estimated £3 billion a year. Chancellor Rachel Reeves already has a £20 to £30 billion deficit to try and balance in the November budget. So, should she do it? She tells Woman's Hour about how she got here and her plans for the future. The Librarians is a new documentary examining the rise of campaign groups calling to ban books from school and public libraries in the USA. Anita talks to film maker Kym Snyder and librarian Amanda Jones.Oyinkan Braithwaite's debut novel My Sister the Serial Killer was nominated for the Women's and Booker prizes in 2019. On the 100th anniversary of the League of Nations' 1925 Resolution on the Collaboration of the Press in the Organisation of Peace, we talk with Professor Kaarle Nordenstreng to explore how media, moral disarmament, and broadcasting shaped interwar internationalism and later global media debates. Professor Nordenstreng shares his thoughts on his research on the 1925 Resolution and the developments that led up to the 1936 International Convention on the Use of Broadcasting in the Cause of Peace. He connects these landmarks to the first mass media declaration by UNESCO in 1978. He also recounts highlights from his career from his early involvement in radio to interviewing Carl Jung in 1961, and speaking at the UN in 1982, and reflects on the continuing challenges of journalistic ethics, disarmament, and multilateralism today. The episode connects past media diplomacy to today's challenges, urging renewed focus on media ethics, international cooperation, and the power of journalism to shape public opinion for peace. I, for one, think geese really do have souls.Topics in this episode include librarian Thomas Lyster and his Quaker faith, why Lyster always seems to be dancing in “Scylla and Charybdis,” the journal of Quaker founder George Fox, what James Joyce knew about the Quakerism, Christfox, leather trews, confusing Shakespeare and George Fox in the context of “Scylla and Charybdis,” whether or not women have souls, George Fox traveling about debating people about religion, Stephen's jealousy of spiritual leaders who attract women, Anne Hathaway at the end of her life, the real Thomas Lyster, how the real Lyster compares to the Ulysses version, what “baldpink lollard costard” means, and the extremely petty reason Joyce wrote Lyster the way he did.Support us on Patreon to access episodes early, bonus content, and a video version of our podcast. We're back to Sunday Showcase's Mutual Presents as we introduce another favourite from the Mutual Broadcasting System, our spiritual forefather to the Mutual Audio Network- Welcome to "The Crime Club"! The Crime Club aired on the Mutual Broadcasting System as a half-hour weekly radio series, beginning on December 2, 1946 and continuing until October 16, 1947, a run of 47 episodes. It aired on Mondays at 8 p.m. through December and then on Thursdays at 10 p.m. It was also heard on Wednesdays and Sundays on some stations. Each installment was introduced by the series host, The Librarian, portrayed by Barry Thomson and Raymond Edward Johnson (who was perhaps better known as the host of Inner Sanctum Mysteries). The series featured murder and mystery dramas, some of which had already been published by the Doubleday Crime Club. A new Crime Club book was made available to the public each week and distributed though local newsstands and bookstores. Each show in the series began the same way. The telephone rings and the Librarian answers "Hello, I hope I haven't kept you waiting. Yes, this is the Crime Club. I'm the Librarian. (name of the program)? Yes, we have that Crime Club story for you. Come right over. (The organist plays a creepy tune). The doorbell chimes. "Ah you're here. Good. Take the easy chair by the window. Comfortable? The book is on this shelf." (The organist plays a scary chord). Here it is - (name of the program, the author and a very brief summary). "Let's look at it under the reading lamp." The Librarian begins reading the prologue for the tale, and another Crime Club offering begins. This week we start things off with "Death Blew Out the Match" and "Mr. Smith's Hat"! Join Dave and Wayne for genre television show news, a glimpse into what the hosts are watching, listener feedback, and analysis of the TNT series The Librarians: The Next Chapter. This week on the SciFi TV Rewatch podcast we discuss the season one finale, and though it was a generally enjoyable episode, the number of ridiculous narrative devices, plot points, and dodgy dialogue threaten to ruin what could have been a solid offering. In our What We're Watching segment, Dave finishes the Starz historical drama trilogy culminating w/The White Princess, and Wayne works his way through the Netflix series The Four Seasons. In Listener Feedback, David Duprey returns w/feedback via email, and Fred from the Netherlands and Alan in England comment on the season finale. The term “culture wars” is most often associated with issues of sexuality, race, religion, and gender. But, as recent months have made plain, when Donald Trump refers to the culture wars, he also means the arts. He fired the board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which Republicans want to rename for him. His Administration fired the national archivist and the Librarian of Congress, and pressured the director of the National Portrait Gallery to resign; it is reviewing the entire Smithsonian Institution, looking for what the President calls “improper ideology.” Some view these moves as low-hanging fruit for Trump, and a distraction from bad press about Jeffrey Epstein, the Putin meeting, and tariffs. But Adam Gopnik believes that interpretation is a misreading. The loyalty purge at institutions such as the National Portrait Gallery is a key part of his agenda. “Pluralism is the key principle of a democratic culture,” Gopnik tells David Remnick. Could we be following the path of Stalinist Russia, where a head of state dictated reviews of concerts, Remnick asks? “I pray and believe that we are not. But that is certainly the direction in which one inevitably heads when the political boss takes over key cultural institutions, and dictates who's acceptable and who is not.” Gopnik recalls saying after the election that “Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert would be next.” “You would see them disappear,” he added. “Each time, we find a rationale for it or a rationale is offered. And it's much easier for us to swallow the rationale than to face the reality.” Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices
Does what it says on the tin. Gethard talks to a polyamorous witch librarian who once worked the front desk at a brothel, surprisingly perfect training for library life. They get into the realities of coven community, late-discovered neurodivergence, leaving a faith tradition, and why public libraries are such vital spaces, now more than ever. It's wide-ranging but never scattered. More like a life filed neatly into sections by someone who knows how to organize a catalog.
