In this episode we welcome acclaimed critic, author and professor Evelyn McDonnell and invite her to discuss her new Joan Didion book, along with the Motels, Britney Spears and California's pop history in general. Evelyn talks about her early L.A. memories and childhood move to Wisconsin before we hear how she progressed from her college paper in Providence, RI, to becoming the pop critic for the Miami Herald. We also note books such as her Runaways biography Queens of Noise, a suitable jumping-off point for a long conversation about her fellow Californian, Didion. Mark and Martin reminisce about the impact of Didion's extraordinary essay collections Slouching towards Bethlehem and The White Album, after which we follow her career through to the bestselling Year of Magical Thinking. The L.A. theme continues as we hear two clips from Steve Roeser's 2001 audio interview with Motels singer Martha Davis, putting that band into historical context with discussion of the pre-punk D.I.Y. "Radio Free Hollywood" shows in 1976. From there we fast-forward to the very different "L.A. Woman" that was and is Britney Spears, which in turn prompts our guest to give her very pertinent take on the [Jann] "Wennergate" debacle of the past month. At a significant remove from all this Hollywood Babylonia was avant-jazz giant Carla Bley, whose death we mark in a conversation about 1971's extraordinary Escalator Over The Hill. Finally, Mark mentions pieces he's recently added to the RBP library, including interviews with Laurie Anderson and the Byrds' Roger McGuinn, and Jasper rounds the episode off with remarks on pieces about Herbie Hancock and Steve Goodman's Hyperdub label. Many thanks to special guest Evelyn McDonnell. The World According to Joan Didion is published by HarperOne and available now. Pieces discussed: Hollywood Swinging: Joan Didion in '60s L.A., The Runaways, The Motels' Martha Davis audio, Britney Spears at Staples Centre, Britney Spears interviewed by Steven Daly, Carla Bley interviewed by Brian Case, Carla Bley at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Dwight Twilley Band, Dwight Twilley: Magical Mystery Man, Queen Latifah/DJ Mark the 45 King, The Byrds, Laurie Anderson, Steve Goodman & Hyperdub and Herbie Hancock.

The Outlaws are in the Staples Centre for the dawn of the Ruthless Aggression era! Brock Lesnar defends his newly won WWE Heavyweight Championship against The American Badass. RVD and Triple H go toe to toe for the big gold belt in a surprisingly impressive match. Elsewhere Edge and Eddie Guerrero continue to rise up the ranks as do Angle and Benoit. We're wildly unimpressed with the HLA/Bischoff/Steph angle going on throughout the PPV but love 3 Minute Warning's PPV debut! All of that, plus much, much more. Cryptocurrency & FinancialMarkets News & Stats22nd Nov 2021Today I talk about the following:1. Our Portfolios performances2. ConstitutionDAO had raised over $45 million for the auction, but was unable to compete against Griffin's final bid due to hidden expenses such as Sotheby's auction fee of 13.9% and the costs to preserve and transport the historic document. Now that the auction is over, ConstitutionDAO is fracturing. Some members are demanding refunds while others are urging the DAO to pursue a new project with all that capital. Since it began, ConstitutionDAO has maintained that if it lost the auction, all contributors would be refunded. What many donors new to the Ethereum ecosystem didn't realize, however, was that the network's high gas fees meant no one would see their full donation amount returned.3. Today we are joined by WNBA Champion, Sixth Woman of the Year, and WNBA All-Star Jantel Lavender, one of the newest members of the Indiana Fever. Entering her 10th year in the WNBA, we talk about the disparities between the NBA and WNBA and her role as a leader and a voice in inspiring other young girls to be their true selves. With more and more networks airing WNBA games, fans will have unprecedented access to watch the women play and our podcast today continues to raise the profile of the League and the elite athletes who have changed the way the game is played. With the start of the WNBA season, Jantel shares her thoughts on how the League has used its platform to raise the profile of social justice issues, in particular, the Black Lives Matter movement, how breaking her foot impacted her career in exceptional ways, and what she’s most looking forward to, playing for her new team. We talk about what it was like to play for the LA Sparks and Magic Johnson at the Staples Centre, winning it all in the 2016 championship series. Jantel tells us about the constant grind to stay at the top and in the game, the pressure around body image, and her message to other women who face similar challenges - celebrate yourself!

Today I speak to Nathan Kosky who is the Vice President of Global Partnerships at AEG - no not the appliance firm but the global firm Anschutz Entertainment Group that owns the likes of the O2, Staples Centre, the LA Galaxy and Coachella amongst other famous venues and iconic festivals. Nathan started in media sales before being recruited by AEG to help then develop the O2 Arena. He had a stint away to be the commercial director at Coventry City Football Club before returning to AEG to find a company that had substantially grown during his time away. Nathan discusses how deals get done at such a huge level and offers insight into the scale of the thinking behind these partnerships. Finally, Nathan has recently launched a cricket podcast called Middle Please Umpire with Mark Wood & Miles Jupp and although it's only a few episodes in, it's had some really promising early numbers and I think he has a hit on his hands. Nathan recommends the following books Fibber in the heat by Miles Jupp. Seavens Heaven by Ben Ryan An Astronauts Guide to Life on Earth - by Chris Hadfield. Nathan is challenging himself in 2021 to match his behaviours with his goals - he is reviewing every decision with his values in mind. Madison Square Garden in New York, Staples Centre in Los Angeles, het Vogelnest in Peking, Zuid-Korea, Japan...overal ter wereld."

HOLD ON A MINUTE NOW PLAYER! Two good episodes of RAW in a row? What is this bizarre-o world we've landed ourselves in? This week, Matt and Seb look at Monday Night RAW live from the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, California. A good show with some actual story momentum! Matt did forget to look at what shoes Shane was wearing this week, so sadly 'Matt's Weekly Shane's Shoes Segment' takes a hit this week. Any thoughts or questions? Chuck as an email! goinginpodcast@gmail.com or tweet us @goinginpodcast. Many thanks to http://www.bensound.com/ for the music!
Nat, Mike and Dan are back in an all-pro line-up after last week's terrible fail. To make up for it they've crammed 46% more references into this week's show, something as useless as it is unprovable... In other news: Dan pioneers movie reviews through noises; it's Lynch vs. Fincher and we all know who's going to come out on top there; Nat gets needlessly aggressive; Mike goes to film festivals; in the NFL, everybody loves Pat McAfee and not just for his virus-control properties; Kap can throw things occasionally; there's a tied game and the entire of America goes mental with anguish; Romo hasn't choked... Yet; the NHL season is underway and the LA Kings paraded the Stanley Cup around the Staples Centre then got whupped by the Sharks; the NBA has a new TV deal for the GDP of several small countries and already a lot of star players *cough, Lebron, cough* are acting like a-holes about money; loads of Bodeans Mailbag goodness, loads of references (or did we mention that already?) and much, much more...
Subscribe (iTunes)Subscribe (Stitcher) Built to Play explores new Nintendo games, the tricky world of Dota 2 and why we keep seeing the words "You Died" when we close our eyes. Daniel and Arman visited Nintendo of Canada to play upcoming titles like Mario Maker, Bayonetta 2 and Yoshi's Wooly World. But when it comes to Super Smash Bros. the two land on a bit of a competitive streak. Take a listen to hear more about the relative nudity of Pokemon, Toad's Batman voice, and genius robot design. If you want more in-depth coverage of these Nintendo games check out Daniel's write up from a few weeks back. You can hear us squabble over whether Bayonetta 2 is better than Smash Bros and if Goku is the greatest fighter of all time starting 1:06. Daniel finishes his masterpiece in Mario Maker, the Mario platformer level designer coming to the Wii U. Mobile online battle arena games like League of Legends are easily the most popular games on the planet, so we decided take a look into the fast-growing esport. Also known as MOBAs, games like League of Legends and Dota 2 are becoming a force in esports. The fourth annual Dota 2 championships back in July crowd-funded a $10.6 million prize pool, a bigger prize than the Super Bowl. Twenty million people watched the tournament, with as many as two million watching at the same time. League of Legends is still the most popular game in the genre, filling the Staples Centre in Los Angeles during its last tournament, but Dota 2 outranks it for the sheer amount of money on the table. So it should be of no surprise that people are trying to start businesses around the two games. In Toronto you could find viewing parties at bars or in movie theatres. Shane Perron ofeSport Gaming Events hosted a viewing party of the Dota 2 championships in one of the city's oldest theatres, the Regent. Entry was $15 for a full day of sports spectating. They host events like this for a lot of different games, including League, Dota and once upon a time Starcraft 2. According to Shane, viewing parties are a great alternative to building their own tournaments since they're expensive and take a lot of preparation. The International, Dota 2's world championships, viewing party held at the Regent. Courtesy eSports Gaming Events There's just two big problems. Many video game players don't like paying to watch an event they could watch on their laptops, and on top of that, MOBAs are complicated. They're daunting to approach, and the rules are arcane. It's hard to describe a given match of Dota to someone who's never played it. Our best attempt is a single character strategy game played with a team, like a chess team in a forest. That doesn't get into the grit of how the dozens of characters work, however, and their unique roles in these games. Shane says that hosting events like this can be sustainable, though it will take time. Hear him describe the viewing party they hosted at the Regent, why he's spent more than a 100 hours in Dota 2 and the challenges facing eSports Gaming Events starting 36:00. Meanwhile, a game's sounds can hang around long after we finish playing, according to a new study from Nottingham Trent University. Courtesy Cebula Means Onion Many players have made the mistake of playing games for too long. Say by accident you stayed up all night to beat a boss in Dark Souls, and wound up seeing the words "You Died" and hearing that evaporation sound over and over again. That's never happened to Daniel or Arman, considering they're absolute masters of that game, but for hypothetical sakes, let's all imagine. You turn off the game, head to bed, and right as you close your eyes, you hear the sound of your soul leaving your body. This strange phenomenon of lingering game sounds has been studied by the International Gaming Unit at Nottingham Trent University. Everything from the bloop of a portal opening to the ding when you collect a coins can hang around after gameplay, usually after a considerably long playtime. Sometimes it's music. Sometimes it's bullets. It's hard to say what triggers these sounds but they can seem like they're coming from outside of the body, reasonably freaking some people out. Even more bizarre is that it's not just audio. Visuals can stick around as well, not to mention behaviours based on game logic. It's all part of a group of effects known as game transfer phenomena or GTP. Angelica Ortiz de Gortari is a psychologist and doctoral researcher studying GTP, who explains the sheer variety of lingering noises, images and behaviours. You can hear her describe her own experience with GTP, why the effects are mostly harmless, and why regardless it's important to study starting 47:00. We used a ton of music this week from the Free Music Archive, so to everyone on this list, thanks for providing your music in creative commons. In our Nintendo segment, we used "Blanks," "Moondots and Polkabeams," and "Hundy Mil Tight" by Podington Bear. "Night Owl" by Broke for Free is our opening theme. "Hallon" by Christian Bjoerklund, "eeeoooww" by junior85, "Nana Veloz" by Crisopa, and "Sun Bum" by Monster Rally all play during our interviews. We used sound from various Nintendo games, the International 4 novice stream, the CBC, Super Mario Bros, Sonic the Hedgehog, Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil 5. Special thanks to Mark Asfar for filling in for the news on short notice. Daniel Rosen will be back next episode with a vengeance. This episode was written and edited by Arman Aghbali. Episode 31Michael Jackson's MemorialMJ INTRO CLIP SONGSThis episode, I'll mention the memorial to Michael Jackson that happened early this morning New Zealand time. I'll play plenty of emotional songs, interspersed with clips from the memorial service. The intro clips were, in order, I Want You Back, I'll Be There,Aint No Sunshine,Rockin Robin,Little Bitty Pretty One,Who's Lovin' You,My GirlThis is part of an unreleased song, For All Time, it was included on Thriller 25.Today there was a public memorial, it was held in the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, 17 and a half thousand tickets were given out to lucky Michael Jackson fans to attend. A private Jackson family service was held beforehand, and then Michaels closed casket was unexpectedly taken to the Memorial, it was just in front of the stage for the event. Many famous celebrities took to the stage and talked about how much Michael Jackson meant to them, some performed his songs. Notable people included Mariah Carey, Magic Johnson, Koby Bryant, Usher, Al Sharpton, Brooke Shields, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson and John Mayer. This is from today Memorial, Stevie Wonder talks about Michael, and mentions a song he wrote for him that was included in the Off The Wall album, I play a clip from the song.Heres an early demo clip of Michael with his brothers, working on a Jacksons song together, notice the fighting at the end, in lots of the demo clips, recorded at the Jackson Family studio, you can hear the siblings argue. See how long it takes you to recognise the song.Ok, so thats not really fighting, but on some of the demo tracks, you can hear the jacksons yell at each other, normally Michael will be saying to turn something up or down, and one of the brothers will say something like "do it yourself", and Janet will take Michaels side. Often when musicians die, fans go through their music and find odd back masked messages, or hints about the singers death. When I heard about Michael going into Cardiac Arrest, and that he had been injected with a drug shortly before, I thought of his song Morphine, from the album Blood On The Dancefloor. They lyrics are all about Michael and his drug addictions to painkillers, Elton John was thanked as helping him off the drugs. The lyrics to Morphine are kind of scary to listen to now, He got flat babyKick in the back babyA heart attack babyOh God he's taking demerolI'll play some of the song Its kind of odd, he named a drug he was addicted to, and mentions a heart attack a decade or so before he pretty much dies from exactly that. This is one of my favourite sad songs, Someone In The Dark, it was included in the E.T soundtrack and storybook Michael recorded. Michael Jackson said of all the awards he had gotten, he was most proud of the 1984 Best Recording for Children grammy for this song.Smokey Robinson, a famous Motown artist who wrote songs for other singers, had some fond memories of Michael, he appeared at the Memorial. This next song is a Michael Jackson Tribute song, called Better On The Other Side, with Puff Daddy, The Game, Chris Brown, Boys II Men and others. It came out the day Michael died. Al Sharpton had very nice things to say about Michael today at the memorial, he got lots of applause for his message to Michaels kids, its a great quote.A song that came up at the public service was We Are The World.Almost through this episode now, I'm trying to keep this episode relatively short. Michaels brother Marlon spoke at the service today, Marlon had a stillborn identical twin brother, Brandon Jackson, who gets mentioned by Marlon at the memorial to Michael. Very touching.I'd like to play my second last song, before a clip from one of Michaels children, its very rare for one of his three children to be seen in public, he hid them away from the paparazzi.Michaels daughter, Paris Jackson was onstage with the other celebrities near the end of the public service, with Janet Jackson and other family members beside her, when she spoke, it reminded me of Steve Irwins daughter talking at her fathers public service. It breaks my heart to hear Paris Jackson talk, for the first time in public. That was janet giving her advice at the start. So far, Michael hasnt been buried, theres talk the family would like to have him buried at Neverland Ranch, possibly near the train station he used everyday to go from his house to the small zoo he had near the back of his property. Its an interesting idea, having Neverland Zoo as a Graceland type tourist attraction, I'd certainly like to visit sometime. Whatever happens to Michaels body from now on, his public memorial was very successful. I'd like to thank you very much for joining me, with episode 31 of Jay Wont dart's podcast. My outro is one last sad song. If you want to contact me, even just to say you listened, send an email to jaywontdart@gmail.com, j a y w o n t d a r t @ gmail.com, I'd appreciate it.Even though Michael Jackson has died, I know his music will live on in me personally, and his millions of other fans worldwide. Im trying not to be sad, and instead be thankful that I was lucky enough to be alive at the same time he was, and to have his music to listen to for decades to come.Have a super happy day, bye.
