Let's break down this story. I belong to those who believe small gods call out to lizards with wings. Who can remember 20 years ago? How do you know those you've forgotten still live? A man told me last night he had died in another lifetime because he jumped off a cliff to keep the Romans from killing him—some kind of religious thing, many, many centuries ago. I told him I'd never experienced a past life. I said all life is one, as far as I was concerned—a continuous roll across the void at home and nothing. He had his story; I had mine. And then Bill Fundaberg's story—Bill died in the East Village during the Aids crisis. Oh, Bill Funderburg, we loved him; he could have been Andy Warhol in another life; he had one of those long-stem cigarette holders that he put his camel in, or his Marlboro or whatever cigarette he smoked. And he walked around staring up the sky, peering into the trees, puffing his cigarette. After he died, that news didn't come back to me for many years. When I last heard the news, it was a long time ago, and somebody told me his teeth were on a shrine in Phuket, Thailand. All praise to the land of the Buddha—the butterflies came—gold wings, Hungry for beauty—nothing boring about butterflies and dreams. And then there are those who wait for buses across the street, from the bar to Marché in Paris, where people lean on walls in the uncertainty of casual time. Oh, hungry, complacency; why do the fairies lie so much? Can you tell me that? Why do the fairies lie so much? How come the first position blesses the robin's eggs before I can break open? She said she hated pink. Oh, my. Bill Funderburg loved pink. I love wizards. At The Bar du Marché, you can do nothing, absolutely nothing. It's okay. Surie waves at the people who go by—serves and drinks‚—waves at them again. I've been going there for years—maybe 40 years. Will I soon disappear? Will I soon find the bus, the bus I've been waiting for for a long, long time? Who will remember me when I'm gone?

German Nenov (Ukraine's Creative Director Eurovision 2023), SuRie (UK 2018), Izzy Uncut (Watch What Happens Live) On this episode, we explore the technology required to make a spectacle like Eurovision happen-- and we discuss how Eurovision's identity as a technological innovator is connected to its self-identity as an institution meant to stitch Europe back together. We talk with Ukraine's Creative Director for Eurovision 2023, German Nenov, about how the show comes together. Then we sit down with SuRie, the UK's 2018 Eurovision contestant. Her performance marked one of the times that the machinery of Eurovision stopped-- as a man rushed the stage nearly interrupting her performance. We talk with SuRie about how she kept the performance on track, and also what it's like for an artist to try and translate their work to the needs of the Eurovision stage. Finally, New York's premiere stunt queen, Izzy Uncut, drops by to evaluate spectacle at Eurovision. We talk about some of Eurovisions most iconic moments of athleticism and surprise in a game we're calling "Cooter Smash or Cooter Pass." In Platformization and Informality: Pathways of Change, Alteration, and Transformation (Palgrave MacMillan, 2023), scholars from Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jakarta, Cape Town, Sao Paulo and other cities of the global South explore the complex relationship between platformization and informality through a different lens. Drawing on extensive theoretical, quantitative and qualitative scholarship, they provide both a useful overview and insights into the lived realities of gig work for platforms covering a range of skills, working conditions, and forms of algorithmic management. Platform work has attracted considerable attention from scholars in the global North, who have tended to view it as a form of casualisation of work that was previously regulated. But what about the global South, where most employment, especially that of women and migrant workers was historically already informal? Beyond a focus on livelihoods, employment, and work, the authors show how labour platforms take on powers that bring about broader impacts, including those affecting identity and personal wellbeing. They also illustrate the impact of platformization on the governance of affected sectors by public agencies, thus affecting political power, and how public data infrastructures contribute to further platformization. The purpose of this pioneering work is to lay bare these interactions to then rebuild our understanding of platformization and its social, political, cultural and economic impacts. Its insights are attentive to gender and ethnic differences, as well as geographical ones. Learn more about your ad choices.

Teya & SaLena werden Österreich beim Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool mit dem Song "Who The Hell Is Edgar?" vertreten. "Who the Hell Is Edgar?
India has been seeking to expand its global influence and has set ambitious goals for itself in this regard. For example, last December, India assumed the presidency of the G20, a group of the world's largest economies that aims to promote international economic cooperation. This has been presented as a significant opportunity for India to showcase its leadership and advance its economic and foreign policy goals on the global stage. India's G20 presidency will also have implications for South Asia. The country's leadership role in the G20 could lead to an increased focus on the region and potentially lead to greater economic integration and cooperation among South Asian countries. Additionally, India's emphasis on the digital economy, climate change, and health could also have spillover effects for the region. But while India looks outward globally, China, in recent years, has been increasing its presence in South Asia through various means, such as infrastructure development and investment. This increasing Chinese presence in its traditional sphere of influence has been a concern for India, and it has been responding with its own set of initiatives of diplomacy, development, and investment initiatives. In this episode, PEI's Nirjan sits with Mandakini Surie to discuss these global ambitions of India, the position it holds in the various Indo-Pacific Strategies to counter the rise of China, and the impact this has on its South Asian Neighbors. Two of this year's Eurovision hopefuls, Cornelia Jakobs and MARO, meet three former contestants - SuRie, Dami Im and KEiiNO's Alexandra Rotan - to discuss how writing music in rooms with strangers is like speed dating, the expectation that fans have of their sound, why there's no formula to win the competition, and the strength in simplicity. Susanna Marie Cork, better known as SuRie, was the 2018 UK entry for the competition. Dance-pop singer-songwriter Alexandra Rotan is a member of the super group KEiiNO, who represented Norway in 2019. Stockholm-based singer-songwriter Cornelia Jakobs is representing Sweden in this year's Eurovision, taking place in Turin, Italy, while MARO is representing Portugal. Korean-Australian pop singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dami Im came second in the 2016 competition.
We caught up with the UK's Eurovision 2018 singer and London Eurovision Party 2022 host SuRie ahead of the live show. She told us about her upcoming album and her favourites from this year's contest. Interviewer: Edd - http://instagram.com/eddkeith

Thanks for taking a chance on this podcast with me. For the last episode, I wanted to do something really special. Today's guest is the amazing SuRie; she's a singer, songwriter, brilliant performer, wonderful human being, and she also happens to be my sister. I wanted to chat to someone I really trust about the themes of this EP, and the stories behind the lyrics. So this week, SuRie is interviewing me! We cracked open a bottle of wine, sat down on the floor of my bedroom and talked through each track on ‘Secrets I'll Never Tell' in detail. There's also a little surprise at the end of the episode which I hope you'll enjoy. I'm a bit nervous for you to hear this one, but I'm also excited for you to have the full picture of where these songs came from. So I really hope you enjoy this chat and thanks again for joining me for this little mini series of podcasts. It's been really fun to put together. Linda Ness and Suzie Thorpe meet Professor Christi Deaton, who started her career as a nurse, but who’s now Clinical Professor of Nursing in Cambridge and keen to encourage people into the nursing profession. And we speak to SuRie, famously interrupted by a stage invader while performing in the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest, and who […]
We meet Singer/songwriter SuRie. Her new EP “Rye” was released in May during lockdown and she says this enabled her some moments of distraction and focus but brought some very unusual challenges as well. SuRie represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2018 in Lisbon, with her song "Storm". See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Meldet euch bei Marco (marco@mercicherie.at) oder Alkis (alkis@mercicherie.at)

Pre-competition favourite Netta Barzilai won the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest for Israel on Saturday with her song Toy.Barzilai beat out competition from 42 other countries' performers to claim the music extravaganza's annual crown at the Grand Final in Lisbon, Portugal. There was a strong field of contestants at this year's event, and the Israeli entry topped close competition from Cyprus, Austria, Sweden and Germany.Barzilai racked up 529 points, compared with 436 for runner-up Cyprus and 342 for third-place Austria. The contest largely shed its traditional hallmarks of glitz and glitter in favour of a more restrained and tasteful tone in Lisbon, which was hosting the event because it won last year with Salvador Sobral's sober and subdued ballad Amar pelos Dois.Sobral last week criticized Toy as "horrible music." But Barzilai was unrepentant with her popular techno dance beat about women's empowerment. Her win — Israel's fourth and first since 1998 — means her country hosts next year's Eurovision Song Contest, which is watched by some 200 million people."Next time in Jerusalem!" Barzilai shouted to the audience as she picked up her award. "I'm happy people chose something different. It's refreshing," she said. The international contest began as a competition between European countries, but its huge popularity has led to the inclusion of Israel and Australia among the performers.Barzilai, known more usually as Netta, is a sassy woman with a witty on-stage personality. Before the Grand Final, her song had already racked up more than 20 million views on Eurovision's YouTube channel. In Toy, Netta makes funny noises, including a clucking sound like a chicken and barely decipherable words, and uses a looping machine and synthesizer. The lyrics say, "I'm not your toy, You stupid boy, I'll take you down."Despite hosting the event, Portugal came last, with 39 points. The event was not without its controversy.Shockwaves were felt around the world when a protester ran onto the stage and snatched away the microphone of the United Kingdom's contestant SuRie.The man got hold of the microphone but was quickly tackled by security and taken away while SuRie stood by.The British singer kept her composure and picked up her song where she left off, earning her praise from many viewers, including Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. The biggest shock came from the public votes, when Australia received the lowest score with just nine points. The announcement of the scores caused the stadium to erupt with boos. The event is organized by the European Broadcasting Union, an alliance of public service broadcasters.
