Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

FEEDBACK Starsight by Brandon Sanderson (rec’d by Elizabeth) QUESTIONS 1. Good Morning! I recently came across your podcast and I absolutely love it! You’re recommendations in the past couple episodes are amazing and the diversity of hosts with their unique tastes and conversations really makes this one of my favorite podcasts. I am about to start my PhD in August and really would like to make reading a bigger part of my life so I can have an escape from the stress of school over the next 5 years. Up until now I have mainly been reading nonfiction books in areas I am interested in but since I read a lot of scientific papers for class already I would like to break this up by getting more into fiction. My problem however is that I have a hard time getting into fiction works and a lot of times I end up either reading it like it’s homework that I have to read or I just don’t finish it. There are a few fictions books that I do really enjoy however such as, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, The Count of Monte Cristo, 11/23/63 and Ready Player One. I would really appreciate any recommendations and I look forward to listening to all your future podcasts. Thank you so much! -Chase 2. Hello! In late August (time-sensitive!) I am heading away to Europe for a few weeks travelling with my boyfriend between cities he will be working in, and as well as the 40 hour (!!) travel time there and back from where I live in New Zealand, we will be spending a lot of time on trains, and I’ll be exploring on my own while he is working. I’m hoping to fill a lot of this time with reading, and I’m keen to get some suggestions set in the areas we will be in – various cities in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany – or stories about trains. I’d love something with good female characters and some focus on the relationships between them, or maybe a little bit of mystery. I also love narrative non-fiction! At the moment I am a little burnt out on historical fiction, thrillers, and books with dark subject matter, so I’d rather steer clear of those, and nothing over 400 pages or so please, for the sake of my baggage allowance. Thanks so much! -Alex 3. I recently had to put down one of my dogs very suddenly. I want to read something, but my usual genre of adventure/ya doesn’t sound appealing. I was currently reading Throne of Glass (and loving it) but it just is too much right now. I want something light that’ll make me laugh but with no death in it. Especially of a pet. I recently read Tiffany hadish’s book, and I loved it, but I don’t typically reread non fiction. -Taylor 4. Sort of time sensitive. Would need by September. Hi! My book club has been going for about 2.5 years now and I have unofficially (but kind of officially) taken over October as my month with the intent of making the group read some super creepy shit. My last 2 picks were White Tears and The Changeling. Both have really stuck with people–whether they loved them, liked them, or kind of hated them–and we particularly had a lot of great conversation about White Tears. I feel like a bar has now been set (albeit just in my own head) and want to pick something in a similar vein, but am struggling to have that “ah-ha” moment. Please help me seriously creep out my friends! Preferably something no more than 300/350 pages and by a woman. We do have one rule: no white men! Some other things that I have recently read and really enjoyed (but would probably be too much, for varied reasons, for the whole group) are: The Beauty (btw, thanks Amanda!) and Fever Dream. Thank you -Heidi 5. I am looking for recommendations for my Dad, Myron. He retired a couple of years ago and has rediscovered – aka found more time for – his love of reading! His favourite genres are spy novels, mysteries, and historical fiction. We often chat about the books we are reading, and thanks to discussions we’ve had about MY personal reading habits and goals, he has started looking for more books authored by women and with lady protagonists. I am so excited that he is diversifying his reading list – and so is he! I would love to find him some more books by women (and non-binary) authors in the genres he loves! -Lisa 6. Hi! I love your podcast and have been listening forever, so I’m sure you’ve answered this at some point and I just don’t know where to look for it. My husband only does audiobooks, and when he finishes something, he often asks for my opinion on what to read next. He only reads fantasy and sci-fi, for the most part, and has listened to EVERYTHING Brandon Sanderson has ever written. I’ve recommended (and he’s liked): The Wheel of Time series Everything by N.K. Jemisin Becky Chambers’s Wayfarers pretty much everything by Marissa Meyer Bone Street Rumba and Shadowshaper series by Daniel Jose Older He’s also read a bunch of John Scalzi, Jim Butcher, Neil Gaiman–mostly white dudes, so I try to recommend non-white or lady (or both) authors to him. Some things he hasn’t cared for: Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Game of Thrones, American Gods, or Shards of Honor (I recommended based on a Star Trek comparison I heard in an earlier episode of either this podcast or SFF Yeah). Can you recommend a SFF series by a non-white or lady author that I can suggest to him? The longer, the better. Thank you!! -Jaimie 7. I’m looking for short, engrossing, quiet novels that I can curl up and read in my armchair in a sitting or two. It’s more about a cozy feeling than about a lot of action. Recent books I have loved that fit this description include: Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf, Whiskey and Ribbons by Leesa Cross-Smith, and I Married you for Happiness by Lily Tuck. None of these books sounded terribly exciting in their descriptions, but I couldn’t put them down and they made me feel all of the big feelings without a lot of action. Please help me chase those feelings again. -KJ BOOKS DISCUSSED Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch The Psychology of Time Travel by Kate Mascarenhas (tw: eating disorders, self-harm, suicidal ideation) The Madonna of the Sleeping Cars by Maurice Dekobra Everything Is Going to be Great by Rachel Shukert Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons Dealing with Dragons by Patricia Wrede Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrande The Merry Spinster by Daniel Mallory Ortberg Bitter Orange by Claire Fuller Bluebird, Bluebird by Attica Locke (lots of racism incl. violence and use of slurs) Queen of the Tearling series by Erika Johansen The Machineries of Empire by Yoon Ha Lee (Ninefox Gambit #1) (tws: coercion, gore, assault) The Cook by Maylis de Kerangal, transl Sam Taylor Dept. of Speculation by Jenny Offill

Amanda and Jenn discuss Civil War reads, diverse middle-grade books, reading slumps, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty and Weregirl & Chimera by C.D. Bell. Bookstore giveaway!   Questions 1. Dear Amanda and Jenn, I am a middle school English teacher and I have a student looking for a book recommendations. She has read To Kill a Mockingbird, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, The Giver, and Would You Reach Me and enjoyed them all. She seems to like books that tackle serious social issues as well as science fiction. Our school library is a little outdated and doesn't offer much in the way of books with diverse characters, so I'd like to direct her to something more current and with diverse characters. Thanks in advance. I love the podcast! --Rebecca   2. Hey Amanda and Jenn! I'm having baby #3 in December, and I'm looking for books to read on my e-reader during the middle-of-the-night feedings. I somehow missed this reading opportunity with my first baby, but with baby #2 a few years ago I read so much! Including at least one of Ruth Reichl's memoirs, Molly Wizenberg's Delancey and Homemade Life, but also a bit of romance, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, and some other novels. I'm open to fiction, non-fiction, genre, etc. The main guidelines are: *fairly easy reads - no complex character lists and maps, and nothing too literary or high-minded. *conducive to reading in short bursts - easy to dip in and out of. Nothing so page-turner-y that I'll stay up even longer. Short chapters or frequent text breaks are a bonus, but not required. *nothing scary, dark, bloody, gory, etc... i.e. nothing where the jacket says (or could say) "chilling" or "haunting" *cozy and charming, but not cheesy *definitely no sick or dying kids/babies/children/moms, or disasters/apocalypses/tragedies *available as ebook (Kindle) So, what books can you suggest for me to read in the middle of the night as I nurse my new baby? --Betsy   3. I am looking for books about the Civil War for my father's 60th birthday. My mother is taking him on a trip to Gettysburg and I want to give him some books that will go along with his trip. He prefers non-fiction and has already read and enjoyed Killer Angels. I was going to get him a copy of Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy - but was hoping that you might have some other great recommendations! Thank you! Love the podcast! --Erin   4. Hi, Next year I am starting a feminist book club called SFF Fems that will read Science Fiction and Fantasy books by female authors only, with an emphasis on marginalised and own voice authors. Do you have any recommendations that would fit this criteria and make for great discussion at a book club meeting? Thanks so much --Tori   5. I'm trying to find books for my eleven year old daughter Cathy to read, but I'm a bit stumped. She's a voracious reader, and well above a usual eleven year old's reading level (this, just to be clear, isn't me being some annoying mom who likes to talk about how special my daughter is. She just happens to be ahead in reading.). She's read and loved Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and the Percy Jackson novels. She just read my copy of the Mists of Avalon and now has an obsession with arthurian legend. She loves history, and knights, and all that fun stuff, but I'm having a bit of trouble finding books for her. She's been reading some adult books on her own, and I'm very lax about what she's allowed to read and watch (the evidence being that I gave her The Mists of Avalon), and am not concerned about things being "appropriate" for her. We have a very open relationship and she comes to me with questions, we discuss what she's read, and honestly we are a very liberal family. However I would like to find her some age appropriate books as well, because I think it's important for her to read about characters her age to relate to. Everything we've been looking for together either doesn't interest her, or she finds condescending. Any ideas? I think some historical fiction would be good, but I just don't know what to look for. Thanks! --Jenna   6. Hi guys! I love the podcast and I'm so glad you're doing the show weekly now, it's my Friday treat to listen to you on the bus. I am in such a reading slump at the moment and I'm really hoping you can help. I had such a good reading year last year but since January, nothing is clicking with me. Could you suggest some books for getting out of a slump? I'm open to any genre, except horror (because I'm a wimp). If it helps, some books that I loved in 2015 were Spinster by Kate Bolick, Being Mortal by Atul Gawande, A Fair Fight by Anna Freeman and The Queen of the Tearling. --Cat   7. Hello there! Not sure if you have already answered a question similar to this, but I figured I'd go ahead and ask anyway. I am a huge fan of The Gilmore Girls, and I was wondering if you guys know of any books that give the same overall feeling as the show. The fast-paced language, the quirky characters and small town feeling, intelligent women, etc. I am open to any and all genres! Mind Grapes: The Vancouver Public Library has been challenging its staff to read diverse books, and Sam is endeavoring to win the challenge! While she's won a few points with Ms. Marvel, she's hoping to get a few more with Erika Johansen's The Queen of the Tearling. To add to this, Alli recommends The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N. K. Jemisen, but doesn't want to spoil anything because it's too good. Instead, Alli offers a review of the second season of Daredevil, the second season of Broadchurch, and listening to the audiobook of Alan Cumming's memoir Not My Father's Son. NERD ALERT!: Sam got to go to Emerald City Comicon, but this year, wearing her librarian hat/flag. She along with friends of the show Erin Fields, Melanie Cassidy, and Anne Gaines gave a panel discussion titled "Research for Writers, World Builders, and Other Types of Nerds" that showed people the power of library-related research. It was a hit - full house, lots of great questions, and the chance to show the power of libraries in a new light.

Once in a while, we here at New Books in Historical Fiction like to branch out. This month’s interview is one example. Erika Johansen‘s bestselling Queen of the Tearling (HarperCollins, 2014) blends past and present, history and fantasy, to create a future world that by abandoning its advanced technology (including, by accident, medicine) has reverted to a society that more resembles the fourteenth century than the twenty-fourth. The world of the Tearling is not exactly the Middle Ages revived. The inhabitants know that life was once different, even though books have become scarce and computers nonexistent. They have learned the story of the Crossing, when a few thousand dreamers disgusted with the social stratification and environmental pollution around them decided to leave it all behind and start again on the other side of the Atlantic. And their idealistic young queen, Kelsea–raised in hiding to protect her from the savage politics of the center–yearns to restore her realm to the democratic and egalitarian principles of the founders. Assuming, of course, that she can survive on the throne long enough to establish her right to rule. But treachery threatens Kelsea from within and without, by means military and magical. The greatest danger comes from Mortmesne, the kingdom to the east, where the Red Queen has ruled for more than a century. Kelsea’s first action as queen puts her on a headlong collision course with the Red Queen, with consequences that play out in book 2, The Invasion of the Tearling, due for release in June. In The Queen of the Tearling, Erika Johansen has created a thought-provoking and entertaining coming-of-age saga that both historical fiction and science fiction fans can enjoy. Erika Johansen discusses her new book THE QUEEN OF THE TEARLING (HarperCollins, July 8, 2014) with Producer Erin Wicks from @HarperAudio_US. The episode also includes an excerpt from the audio edition featuring the voice of Katherine Kellgren. ABOUT THE BOOK An untested young princess must claim her throne, learn to become a queen, and combat a malevolent sorceress in an epic battle between light and darkness in this spectacular debut—the first novel in a trilogy. Young Kelsea Raleigh was raised in hiding after the death of her mother, Queen Elyssa, far from the intrigues of the royal Keep and in the care of two devoted servants who pledged their lives to protect her. Growing up in a cottage deep in the woods, Kelsea knows little of her kingdom's haunted past . . . or that its fate will soon rest in her hands. Long ago, Kelsea's forefathers sailed away from a decaying world to establish a new land free of modern technology. Three hundred years later, this feudal society has divided into three fearful nations who pay duties to a fourth: the powerful Mortmesne, ruled by the cunning Red Queen. Now, on Kelsea's nineteenth birthday, the tattered remnants of the Queen's Guard—loyal soldiers who protect the throne—have appeared to escort the princess on a perilous journey to the capital to ascend to her rightful place as the new Queen of the Tearling. Though born of royal blood and in possession of the Tear sapphire, a jewel of immense power and magic, Kelsea has never felt more uncertain of her ability to rule. But the shocking evil she discovers in the heart of her realm will precipitate an act of immense daring, throwing the entire kingdom into turmoil—and unleashing the Red Queen's vengeance. A cabal of enemies with an array of deadly weapons, from crimson-caped assassins to the darkest blood magic, plots to destroy her. But Kelsea is growing in strength and stealth, her steely resolve earning her loyal allies, including the Queen's Guard, led by the enigmatic Lazarus, and the intriguing outlaw known simply as "the Fetch." Kelsea's quest to save her kingdom and meet her destiny has only just begun. Riddled with mysteries, betrayals, and treacherous battles, Kelsea's journey is a trial by fire that will either forge a legend . . . or destroy her.
