We are back, concluding our epic breakdown of ALL the characters rendered on Scott Koblish’s variant cover to New History of the DC Universe issue 1. Murd and Ian are the crew for this one, beginning with the middle left portion of the cover and making their way right to get through the rest of it all. Any of you DC history buffs, you’re in for some treats! Not only are there plenty of characters you’ve probably never heard of, but there’s also Annie and Tin Tin rip-offs, a few animals, a few talking animals, and versions of characters you’d barely recognize based on what they look like today. History at its finest here! And here is a link to DC’s high resolution version of this cover that we used for the YouTube version of this episode. We're now entering bonus territory in Puppets Go BOOM! Arun and Patricia discuss about the 2004 live action adaptation of the 1965 British sci-fi action series Thunderbirds created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. Alan Tracy is a 14 year old teen who wants to be a Thunderbird just like his father Jeff and his four older brothers Scott, Virgil, Gordon, and John. But he has to go to school before he could even think of joining. Meanwhile, a man known as The Hood wishes to steal the Thunderbirds vehicles so he can break into the banks around the world and steal all the money and wealth. With Jeff and his older sons trapped in Thunderbird 5 up in space and his scientist Brains captured by The Hood and his assistants, it's up to Alan, Brains' son Fermat, and a young teenage girl named TinTin to save the day. When the film premiered in theaters, it made $28 million dollars out of a $57 million dollar budget. It received negative reviews from critics calling it a terrible adaptation of the show with awful characters, terrible CGI, and a story geared towards kids. Even Gerry Anderson himself called the movie "the biggest load of crap I had ever seen in my life". What did Arun and Patricia think of the film?

We excavate how Zaharoff was a prototypical deep political figure foreshadowing more modern underworld ne'er-do-wells and sex-crazed arms traders like Jeffrey Epstein, Adnan Kashoggi, Viktor Bout, Sarkis Soghanalian, Efraim Diveroli, Robert Maxwell, etc. We also draw a number of Erik Jan Hanussen symmetries, convenient considering a likely candidate for a character partly patterned after him in Shadow Ticket. This is the first entry in the SCIF SESSIONS featuring past guests, friends, and Cork Board Cadre members. I initially planned to release a monster episode in call-in special style, but as I got a number of sessions under my belt, it became apparent that a 20 hour or so episode would be prohibitive. So instead, I will be dropping the conversations in discrete installments in between our regular programming. Lots of great material coming at you.File under: parallels with our Shadow Ticket exegesis by way of Zedzed's relationship with British intelligence and Viennese manse, which evoke MI3b agents Pips and Alf Quarrender; Zaharoff's ward Tereza Damala's amorous relations with Gabriele d'Annunzio also evoking ST; his remote cameo in Against the Day via purchasing agent Viktor Mulciber, who is pursuing the Q-Weapon at Zaharoff's behest (which harnesses time as means of violence), his latter attempts to sell it to the Japanese, and Clive Crouchmas' thwarted scheme to sex traffick the scarlet strumpet Dahlia Rideout to the Lord of War, a bribe seeking to tempt his fabled appetite for redheaded Babalonian women; Hergé, Tintin, and Basil Bazarov lampooning the int'l man of mystery; the varying accounts of Zaharoff's early life and heritage, whether Greek, Turkish, Russian Jew, etc. etc.; his criminal adolescence as a member of an arsonry gang cum fire department, a racket in Constantinople where they would burn down wealthy homes and extort payment and which is right on theme with our recent history of class violence, organized crime, racketeering, and transformismo; his time as a brothel tout; human trafficker in Galway, Ireland, sending girls to MasSUSchusetts textile mills; bigamist marrying a dame in Philly; confidence artist; etc.; there are myriad legends, some of which we'll unpack in Pt. II; all trails eventually merge with Zaharoff's employment as a Nordenfelt machine gun salesman; which leads to his relationship with machine gun manufacturer Hiram Maxim; the Rothschilds connection; PM David Lloyd George; negotiations to bribe the Young Turks and Enver Pasha into abandoning the Central Powers circa WWI; and much much more. I am doing my best to ward off burnt-outage, but I think that is sufficient for liner notes for this second. A second part, solo, and with some research revolving around a possible outcropping of the Zaharoff network amounting to a Nazi - Z i o n i s t gun running ring in Palestine in the late '30s and which I'm actually quite giddy over and which may well be relatively novel and which certainly expands upon past points of interest... will follow in the morning. In this episode of Puppets Go BOOM!, Arun and Patricia discuss about the 1968 sci-fi/action/adventure film Thunderbird 6 based on the 1965 series Thunderbirds. Brains creates a airship for the New World Aircraft Organization called the Skyship One. Its maiden voyage starts off on a rough note when a man hired by The Hood under the guise of The Black Phantom killed the original airship crew and replaced them as Captain Foster. Alan, Tintin, Lady Penelope, and Parker are onboard the Skyship One to test out Brains' airship, but are suspicious of Captain Foster with his mannerisms and hidden microphones in their rooms. Meanwhile Brains is trying to create a new Thunderbird vehicle with Jeff's disapproving every design he comes up with. When the film premiered in theaters, it was a box office bomb with negative reviews from critics. It was the last Thunderbirds movie until the 2004 live action film directed by Jonathan Frakes. Is it worse than the first Thunderbirds film or is it a misunderstood gem?

This week, Scott sat down with Lawfare Senior Editors Molly Reynolds and Quinta Jurecic, and Contributing Editor Chris Mirasola, to focus on the week's big domestic news, including:“Drama Majors, Meet Major Drama.” In the glittering city of Los Angeles, the Trump administration has taken the dramatic step of calling up the California National Guard and deploying them alongside active duty Marines to secure federal personnel and facilities, specifically against protestors demonstrating against the Trump administration's draconian immigration policies. Is this the beginning of a broader threat to the constitutional order, as some of Trump's critics say it is? And what should we make of President Trump's suggestion that he may yet invoke the controversial Insurrection Act?“Precision Rescission, What's Your Mission?” The Trump administration has asked Congress to formally rescind a slice of the federal spending it has been withholding since entering office, specifically relating to foreign assistance and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting—a request the House seems poised to move on this week. How likely is it that Congress will agree to the cut in funds? And what will the implications be for relevant legal challenges and Trump's broader agenda?“There and Back Again.” After an unexpected journey and epic delays on the part of the government, the Trump administration has finally repatriated Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the man who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador—only to charge him with human trafficking and other federal crimes in Tennessee. How serious are the charges against him? And is this likely to be a win or loss for the administration's broader immigration agenda? In object lessons, Molly shared a ranking of New York mayoral candidates by their bagel orders—and whose order is so bad, it's a schmear on their very New Yorker-ness. Quinta recommends Ava Kofman's profile of Curtis Yarvin in the New Yorker as a masterclass in the art of meticulous evisceration. Scott introduced his 4-year-old to his old Tintin books by Hergé—because it's never too early to get into the drawbacks of colonialism. And Chris fled real DC drama for fake DC drama with The Residence on Netflix. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare.
