Episode #581: Tin Tin Htar Myint, a medical epidemiologist based in France who has worked in vaccines for more than two decades, describes Myanmar's immunization collapse as a problem of governance as much as medicine. Before 2021, she argues, the national program had been expanding in concrete ways, adding vaccines that could reduce childhood pneumonia and diarrhea and protect girls from HPV. Then the coup shattered the human infrastructure that makes routine immunization possible. Health workers joined the Civil Disobedience Movement, hid, fled, or were arrested, and the country's vaccine system became a set of reported numbers that no longer match the conditions on the ground. Tin Tin points to official coverage figures that appear to rebound after 2021, but says they cannot be reconciled with the reality of airstrikes, displacement, and villages trapped behind checkpoints. In surveys she describes from Sagaing, the most isolated areas show catastrophic “zero dose” rates for children born after the coup—no BCG, no DTP, no MMR—while villages near large cities can still manage partial coverage because access exists and parents take risks to reach it. Some organize ad hoc “vaccination trips,” moving groups of children through military checkpoints to get a shot and return home. For her, the downstream damage is already visible. She describes signs of vaccine-preventable outbreaks appearing again through social media reports, and she that tuberculosis is resurging rapidly in places with limited detection and no reliable drug supply. The collapse does not stop at vaccines. Tin Tin argues that immunization normally arrives with basic care packages, health education, and family planning, and that when the program breaks, those services break too, driving rising pregnancies, miscarriages, and the reemergence of sexually transmitted infections. The most painful detail she offers is also the simplest proof of what is missing. “They still carry the vaccine booklet of their children.”

La discussion reprend le fil d'une conférence que Xavier a donnée à Nordic sur la place de la science-fiction dans la façon dont l'avenir se construit réellement, et sur les liens étroits entre cet imaginaire et sa propre carrière en cybersécurité. La red team du ministère des armées : quand la science-fiction éclaire la stratégie Xavier explique une initiative française singulière : la red team du ministère des armées, animée pendant plusieurs années par son ami Nicolas Mainvie. Contrairement à une red team de pentesting, cette équipe rassemble des militaires de carrière, des diplomates et des auteurs de science-fiction (scénaristes, romanciers) pour réfléchir collectivement aux futurs possibles de la conflictualité — sociale, écologique, militaire. Les récits produits, en partie publics, visent à anticiper des scénarios plausibles pour préparer la France à défendre ses valeurs démocratiques. Xavier souligne que si d'autres pays comme les États-Unis mènent des exercices de prospective similaires, ils le font surtout via des analyses techniques plutôt que par le récit romancé, alors que l'être humain reste fondamentalement un animal d'histoires. Les auteurs de science-fiction, spécialistes de l'avenir Un des points centraux de l'échange est l'idée que les autrices et auteurs de science-fiction sont, par leur pratique quotidienne, particulièrement entraînés à imaginer des futurs plausibles. Nicolas et Xavier remontent aux mythes grecs, à Jules Verne (dont les récits de voyage vers la Lune ont inspiré des générations), et même à Tintin, dont les fusées annoncent étonnamment bien les technologies actuelles — démontrant une forme de « contamination » des idées entre œuvres, y compris celles qui ne se revendiquent pas explicitement de la science-fiction. L'imaginaire d'enfance comme moteur de carrière Xavier raconte comment son ami Nicolas Mainvie lui a fait remarquer que ses deux passions apparemment séparées — la science-fiction et la cybersécurité — sont en réalité intimement liées : ses produits et entreprises répondent souvent, sans qu'il en ait eu pleinement conscience, à des questions posées par des œuvres de son enfance comme Wargames, Ghost in the Shell ou Star Trek. Il insiste sur l'importance de continuer à nourrir son imaginaire d'adulte, au risque sinon de se laisser gagner par des représentations plus sombres ou dépressives de l'avenir. Il cite Ghost in the Shell (2006, saison Standalone Complex) comme un exemple d'œuvre à la fois futuriste et étonnamment optimiste sur la continuité des dynamiques sociales humaines malgré la présence de cyborgs et d'IA. De l'imaginaire à l'innovation concrète La conversation explore ensuite comment la science-fiction fonctionne comme un espace de liberté permettant d'explorer l'humain sans les contraintes du réel, un peu comme les nombres imaginaires en mathématiques permettent de résoudre des équations autrement impossibles. Today we discuss one of the greatest film directors to ever live: Steven Spielberg! Our B-Sides are 1941, Hook, Amistad, and The Adventures of Tintin. Our guest is dear friend and incredible writer Bilge Ebiri! As of this writing, he just published his piece The Raider of a Lost Art, an oral history about Spielberg in conjunction with the release of his new film Disclosure Day. He's also discussed Spielberg with The Film Stage before! We chat about Spielberg's early start and the difficult production of 1941, his stratospheric ‘80s, the successful failure of Hook, and his underrated Amistad. There's a celebration of Spielberg's improbable millennium run of films, from Saving Private Ryan through Munich. The three of us dig into why Bilge loves Hook so much, he speaks on some additional, unpublished gems from his oral history piece, we appreciate the genius of John Milius, and the impossible camera that injects so much energy into The Adventures of Tintin.

Un traîneau de 115 kilos. Moins 50 degrés. Et la solitude la plus radicale qu'un être humain puisse choisir.Né à Rouen, formé chez les scouts et nourri aux aventures de Tintin, Matthieu fait ses études à King's College London et à Sciences Po Paris avant de transformer une thèse de fin d'études en tour du monde en 4L, à travers 90 pays, pour donner une voix aux invisibles de la microfinance. À 27 ans, il atteint le pôle Sud. Aujourd'hui, il consacre ses expéditions à la science : il vient de rentrer d'« Under Antarctica », 4 000 kilomètres en kite-ski en 80 jours avec la glaciologue Heïdi Sevestre, sous l'égide de l'UNESCO et de la Décennie d'Action pour les Sciences Cryosphériques.Sa conviction n'a jamais été d'accumuler des sommets. « Je ne suis pas un collectionneur de sommets », dit-il.
