Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership with Ruth Haley Barton
We are exploring the body triad this week! Containing the enneagram 8s, 9s, and 1s, these folks have to work to manage their relationship with anger. Ruth and Erin discuss the different relationships each number has with anger and how the subtypes impact that. They also explore what safety looks like for 8s, 9s, and 1s, as well as the unique invitations towards transformation for each number. Over on Patreon, Erin is sharing a worksheet that helps us reclaim our own sense of safety and transformational journal questions for the body center numbers. She's also providing some guidance specific to the unique challenges of 8s, 9s, and 1's as they work through those questions. This season we are using the framework of the enneagram, and in particular the ways the 3 instinctual subtypes impact each enneagram number, to help people do the necessary inner work of knowing themselves and managing anxiety, triggers, and stuck patterns so that they can lead others well. This season, we are moving beyond the basics of describing each number type to look at our instincts and what motivates our behaviors. Special guest Erin Baute, a leadership behavior strategist with over 20 years of experience in behavior change and professional development, joins us all season long to help us do this important work. Erin Baute is a professional business coach and leadership behavior strategist with over 20 years of experience in behavior change and professional development, working with individuals and teams. In this episode, Ruth is joined by our guest this season, Erin Baute! Erin and Ruth discuss the three subtypes or instincts, how they show up in all of us developmentally, and why they are so important to our conversations about developing our own sense of internal safety. They also discuss what it truly means to feel safe and how people have weaponized it to detract from their own behaviors. Over on Patreon, Erin and Colleen sit down to have a conversation that delves deeper into instinct theory, how to determine your own instinct preferences, and what it means to be the “countertype” of your number. This season we are using the framework of the enneagram, and in particular the ways the 3 instinctual subtypes impact each enneagram number, to help people do the necessary inner work of knowing themselves and managing anxiety, triggers, and stuck patterns so that they can lead others well. Dean Doug Sweeney sits down for a conversation with this year's Go Global featured speaker, A.K. Lama, executive director of Transforming Leaders in Asia.
Being an influencer requires a combination of strong speaking skills and personal authenticity. Effective speaking isn't merely about having a variable voice tone but also about being able to project one's voice powerfully. Practicing regularly and overcoming initial struggles can significantly refine speaking skills, leading to increased influence and audience engagement. The resources mentioned in this episode are: Hire a book coach or ghostwriter to help structure your thoughts and turn your ideas into a book. Use Chat GPT or other tools to generate a short and captivating book title that will attract readers. Consider recording yourself speaking about your book topic if you don't enjoy writing, but make sure to do it in a structured way. Choose a specific and focused book topic that aligns with your expertise and passions to guide your writing process. Create an outline or structure for your book, breaking it down into smaller topics or chapters for easier writing. Utilize transition time, such as during exercise or commuting, to jot down notes or ideas for your book. Listen to audiobooks related to your book topic to enhance creativity and generate new ideas. Work on improving your voice projection and variety to become a more impactful and confident speaker. Embrace the discomfort of stepping out of your comfort zone as an introvert and practice speaking or recording videos to overcome fears and improve. Take advantage of collaborative programs like Speakers Are Leaders, where you can receive guidance and support in both book publishing and public speaking. Welcome back to Making Bank. On today's episode, we have Antonio Garrido who is the author of My Daily Leadership, a powerful Roadmap for Leadership Success, and founder and president of My Daily Leadership. He has over 25 years in senior leadership positions with world-class businesses and is an expert in leadership transformation, shaping high performance leaders out of highly stressed and overworked leaders. Don't miss this episode of Making Bank with Antonio Garrido. (3:21) Background Antonio didn't come from a business background. In fact, his own father never had an education. However, his father would advise him to start his own company because it is better to be the owner of something small than just a random somebody of something big and this kick started his career. He started, sold and retained about six or seven businesses. (6:53) Biggest Lessons Allow room for failure and learning. You will not succeed or learn much if you do not allow yourself to fail. However, you must learn from the failures and try harder and smarter the next time. Wisdom comes from evaluated experience and not just time served. So, if you don't evaluate the experience, you lose a valuable lesson. (14:07) Emotional Intelligence A lot of leaders rely on MBAs, CV, resume and experience as the barometer for success when somebody's recruiting or hiring. But emotional intelligence is also very important and some say it is even more significant than your IQ. Because it also includes social skills and impulse control which are very important in business. (18:33) Evaluated Experience Take time every day and if you don't journal, start doing it. Because unless you actively take time every day to try and improve and record these things in your journal to build self-awareness, to figure out how you could have responded better in the moment then you won't eliminate your blind spots. (22:02) Leadership Insight Start having two affirmations, two really solid beliefs, two commitments for the day which you won't compromise. three things that you are going to develop, one thing you're going to explore and one thing that you're going to fix for the day. So, you've got affirmations, beliefs, commitments, things you're gonna develop, explore and one thing that you're going to fix. (26:23) Mindset Have a mindset of abundance versus scarcity and always remember to be grateful. You're in a tremendously fortunate position, so try and build your gratitude bank because you can't have a positive life if it's filled with negative thoughts. (28:34) My Daily Leadership If you want to take a leadership health check or take a business health check, and if you are sufficiently concerned with what you read then take a leadership assessment and then fix what needs to be fixed. Martin Friedman and Berwick Mahdi “M” Davenport kick off the new year with a brand new podcast highlighting The Soul Focused Group's new perspectives. This year we introduced our new podcast format and new hosts. We made this change to bring new voices and perspectives that we thought we were missing. Martin and Mahdi agree that bringing two female hosts on this year challenged them to see things differently. Cindy and Martina brought new perspectives, opinions, and suggestions that both men didn't see before. By adding Cindy and Martina we got to explore various topics on motherhood and women in healthcare. We are very happy our Soul Focused Radio hosts were able to share their leadership, wisdom, and experiences with us this last year. The second portion of this podcast is about the new vision for The Soul Focused Group. M is very excited to start exploring how we take leadership to the next level. We see our current leaders struggling to be happy and find inspiration. We want to help leaders find their clarity in 2023. Mahdi shares how many of us are stuck in jobs that don't inspire us or spark passion. He explains that we don't need to change institutions, but we need to focus on changing the people within those institutions. Our world needs leaders not managers. We will see our way of life will change when our way of leading changes. We are happy with all the changes we made last year, and we are very excited to bring our new approach into the new year. Please visit our brand new website, and as always stay Soul Focused!

It's a challenge to create a safe workplace where each of us can thrive, and the pressure falls hard on our leaders. It takes courage and significant motivation to help leaders improve so they can better lead their people in this complex time. In this episode of Fifth Dimensional Leadership, I interview Edward Sullivan, CEO & Managing Partner at Velocity Coaching. Edward has coached and mentored start-up founders, Fortune 500 executives, and political leaders for over 20 years. Edward helps startup CEOs and their executive teams scale their leadership skills and build cultures of collaboration, high performance, and psychological safety. When working with more established companies, he focuses on helping CEOs transform their teams and culture to be more agile and responsive to compete in today's fast-paced environment. In our conversation, Edward talks about transforming leadership to build cultures of collaboration, connection, and psychological safety. Edward holds an MBA from the Wharton School, an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School, and trained as a coach at Co-Active Training Institute and New Ventures West. In addition, Edward has co-authored several books including Leading with Heart: Five Conversations That Unlock Creativity, Purpose, and Results; The Secret to Becoming a Better Manager; and How to Protect Your Team From a Toxic Work Culture. Things you will also learn in this episode: Executive coaching as a competitive advantage. How to proactively address toxicity. Why we are in a leadership crisis How to help manage your team's mental health as a leader. Why Edward wants to wage a war on “executive presence.” Quotes: “Coaching is now viewed as a proactive investment in performance as opposed to a remedial bandage that we put on poor performance.” - Edward Sullivan “Change has to come from [leaders] for the system to heal. Not all systems heal because one person is able to be brave.” - Edward Sullivan “When a company is printing billions of dollars per year, there's really no incentive to change. But it takes transformative leadership to stop and think if it's the company you want to build.” - Edward Sullivan “Have the courage to ask for what we need and the curiosity to ask other what they need” - Edward Sullivan “We can create change in the dysfunctional system by taking off our masks, putting down our shields, and being vulnerable again.” - Edward Sullivan “Often, the CEO or the Founder has the clearest lens of what good looks like, but if no one is meeting that expectation, it's a leadership problem, not performance.” - Edward Sullivan “If we endure for months that feeling of not being seen, not emotionally connected, and not appreciated by our team and leaders, that's when we start to feel emotionally exhausted and that is the true cause of burnout.” - Edward Sullivan “Often, our gifts come from something we had to learn to do to get by in this world.” - Edward Sullivan
Greetings, Leaders. The mind is the most potent creation known to man. How we think determines the leader we are, the one we need to become for leading in the 21st century. Our thinking will influence how we see ourselves, others, and the success we accomplish or miss in life. Please do not allow this world to mold you in its image. Instead, be transformed from the inside out by renewing your mind. Early in my career, my thinking about what I desired to accomplish and how I thought of myself was not aligned. Consequently, I struggled with self-doubt, feelings of inadequacy, and fears of failure. My performance seemed superb on the outside, but within, I was divided in my thinking, doubting I could accomplish much or compete with so many seemingly more talented people than me. In a sense, I was masquerading. I was not authentic. "This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man." Polonius in Hamlet, Act I, scene iii, lines 78–80. Not being true to who we are places extra burdens on us, and we are not as effective as leaders. Our best interest is in the renewing of our thinking. Changing and rewiring how we view ourselves, perceptions, and attitudes. Neuroscience shows us that our minds are programmed to think in specific ways from childhood based on our life experiences. The intentional development of new ways of thinking about ourselves aligns with the vision of who we are and what we envision becoming. Being transformed by renewing your mind became my new mission in life around my career's quarter-century mark. While becoming authentic, the first place was changing my thought patterns. I wrote on paper the person I envisioned becoming, the qualities I desired, and the impact I wanted my life to make. I was blessed to be associated with leaders who saw potential in me and nurtured my new leader's vision. The process is ongoing. These are the benefits I noticed. 1. Personal trust and responsibility in my client relationships became enriching. 2. My clients responded differently to my leadership and suggestions. 3. I began to experience the meaning of "trusted advisor." Someone once said, "People buy from people they like, admire, trust and respect." According to the Center for Creative Leadership, Trust = Ability + Loyalty + Integrity. Here are four outcomes. 1. We lead with purpose and meaning. 2. We are consistent in our responses to circumstances. 3. We give honest and caring feedback. 4. We lead with the integrity of the heart and skillful hands. We grow and rise as leaders when we elevate our thinking with more noble visions and take action! The result is the release from old thought patterns and the joy of experiencing the new you."Keep your eyes fixed straight ahead. Look into the future. Always look up." Tomas J. Watson, Sr. Victory!

View photos and read more here. The Companies that Care podcast highlights business leaders who are making a difference in the world. This week I interview Wendy Horng Brawer, co-founder and chief of learning and innovation for Intune Collective. Wendy is an executive coach, consultant, experience designer, somatic awareness coach, parent, and rock drummer. Wendy is putting into practice what she teaches. “How do we build a company that walks the talk every day? How can we lead from the inside out, becoming whole human leaders helping whole human companies?”Growing up in an Asian family, charting her own course was difficult at times. I asked Wendy about being an Asian-American woman in the workplace. She worked for Dun & Bradstreet in Tokyo, where she was excluded from social events that her American male peers attended. Intune Collective is "a company that sees working with clients as partnerships, and that's reciprocated because we're called partners by our clients…that feels really good because we're showing up in as holistic a way as we can, and we apply something that we call synergistic consulting. We help clients bring it all together…heart, mind, and community.” Wendy believes the most important step for executives to develop caring relationships is making a personal commitment. They need to be willing to model their own growth, to develop emotional intelligence, and to show vulnerability. The same practices apply to implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. This is the work of organizations who care.Wendy is board chair of Calculus Roundtable, which seeks creative, innovative, and highly engaging ways to help underrepresented Black and brown students access STEM learning, develop a passion for it, and continue on career pathways related to STEM.She launched a podcast called “The Business of Being Human” with her Intune Collective partner, Christine Hildebrand. They interview practitioners in HR and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, along with executive leaders. Wendy's advice for people who want to create companies that care is to start with your values. “How do your values show up when you're working with clients? When you're working with each other? If you have conflict and disagreement? You can create a manifesto that anchors you around your values.” Wendy is a somatic coach, and she runs Unbound, a program for women of color to explore what it means to be free, whole, and alive. To learn more, visit www.wendyhorngbrawer.com.On both of my podcasts I highlight voices from underrepresented populations, especially people of color, women, people who are LGBTQIA, non-Christian, and immigrants, people who don't always get a platform. Today’s guest, Shannon Graham, realized he was an entrepreneur since his early teens. When he was in school, he would take the one-cent CDs from the Columbia House catalog and upsell them to his friends and classmates to make a profit. This was his very first taste of being a business owner, and he knew it was for him.Graham began his coaching career in his early 20s while working a full-time job. It did not take long for him to start making more income from his coaching business than his full-time career. By that point, he quit his nine to five to work full time for himself and has never looked back. He now works with ultra-high net worth individuals who have gone through the ultimate failure (losing their purpose and not achieving their fulfillment) through his million-dollar program — Second Summit. His goal is to bring together the 98 percent and the 2 percent to create a better world and bring civilization to Tier One — a civilization that can utilize all the natural energy resources on a planet. But before that can happen, he helps individuals realize their full potential. Can money buy happiness? Contrary to the popular belief that money cannot buy happiness, Graham explains that it 100 percent can. “Happiness is not a core state of being.” Just like sadness, it comes and goes. People confuse happiness and fulfillment. They believe that to truly be content with their lives, they have to be happy. However, as human beings, you cannot be happy all day every day. How can you reach fulfillment? The one thing in life that everyone is trying to achieve (even if they do not know it) is fulfillment. Fulfillment is how we feel about ourselves. Many people think that money can make you feel fulfilled. However, you can be poor and still feel fulfilled, and you can be wealthy and never feel fulfilled. While making money is a science, fulfillment is an art. There is “no clear blueprint” on how you can get it and where you can find it. An issue that Graham comes across from these ultra net worth individuals is that while they were making a way to earn money, they sacrificed their fulfillment. This sacrifice then drags them down. But Graham is here to help turn things around. If you like what Shannon Graham is all about or what he teaches, then check out his website for more information. Or, you can always contact him personally through Facebook.

In my second book, An Unhurried Leader, I wrote a chapter based on Paul’s story of the thorn in his flesh that, no matter how many times he prayed, God did not remove or resolve. As leaders, there are things about us that we want to see changed. But sometimes, instead of changing what is unpleasant or difficult for us, God chooses instead to be graciously and lovingly present to us in the midst of what doesn’t change. Instead of resolution, God offers us transforming presence.Today, I’ve invited my friend, Steve Macchia, to talk about a book he wrote a while back titled Broken & Whole: A Leader’s Path to Transformation. I’ve been grateful for Steve’s work and our friendship for some time now. His life and his leadership are a beautiful example of the fruitful way of humility empowered by grace. Let me tell you more about Steve Macchia. In addition to being the author of at least ten books, Steve is founding president of Leadership Transformations and is the director of the Pierce Center for Disciple-Building at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Before that, he served for 14 years as president of Vision New England. Every now and then I am blessed to meet with and learn from a truly enlightened thought leader. In a world that is increasingly polarized and struggling both inwardly and outwardly, never has there been a time where we need to hear the words of an enlightened soul. In time, we learn that we all are simply one word: LOVE. We learn that we must journey inward and reconnect with that which brings us together, not that which tears us apart. We learn that we must reconnect with our common humanness. Is there truly any greater purpose? In this episode, we meet serial entrepreneur and CEO, Rajeev Daswani. He is the Founder of Mind Body and Soul, (MBS), a workplace wellbeing solutions coaching & consultancy that focuses on Wellbeing at work, as well as the Designer of Conscious Leadership & Organizational Development Programs that move us from DO-ing to BE-ing.My Favorite Quotes from Rajeev Daswani in this episode, (paraphrased):“In today’s world, you must decide if you want to COUNT (in terms of significance), or if you want to only COUNT (in terms of money). The choice is yours!”“It’s no longer a question of WHETHER wellbeing and happiness lead to business profitability…it’s now a question of WHY, more than ever, you need it NOW!”“We are love!
